Payout predicaments
Sometimes the knock-on effects of media
reports can be negative, a case in point
recently involved the security of homes
I
’ve never really understood the position of some of the
newspapers in the UK. While their allegiances to specific
political groups are well-known (or change to suit whoever
looks most likely to win an election allowing them to claim
success by association), the papers do seem in a bit of a muddle
when it comes to the messages they send out. CCTV is a classic
example - on one hand they bash the “Big Brother” environment
of having cameras in public places, then scream “Where is the
CCTV footage?” every time there is a crime to solve.
A case in point recently was the story in the Daily Mail which
was reported to be uncovering the “petty excuses” insurers use
to “wriggle out” of paying the public in the event of a claim. On
first thought, you may consider that this could be an informative
piece exposing the smallprint of some contracts that needs to be
updated to suit the modern, smart, real world busy lifestyles we
all lead, unfortunately not. In fact the way it was delivered
undermined the value of home security and insurance generating
a response questioning the need for security systems at all - so
missing the point entirely.
According to research by Lloyds Home Insurance, November is
the busiest time of the year for burglary insurance claims,
therefore the subject of the article is timely, but the message it
ultimately sends out is negative listing the top five ways in which
companies “dodge” payment with “You forgot to set the burglar
alarm” in second place. Of course you should set your burglar
alarm - especially if you tell your insurer you have one and
receive reduced premiums as a result. Insurers are not going to
pay out if you are in breach of the contract you signed up for.
By making the setting of the alarm the point of focus, the
article generated responses from “Don’t bother with alarms they
don’t stop burglary” to the bizarre “Don’t tell the insurers you
have an alarm because then you’ll have to set it every time you
go out”. One genius said that he’s taken his alarm out and
replaced it with an ISIS flag so that his house is now monitored
24/7 by the Police, MI5, Special Branch and the SAS.
We know that even the presence of a bell box on the front of a
property is enough to make casual criminals target elsewhere so
appearing to make the alarm system and the insurers out to be
the villains of the piece is unfortunate. If you forget to set it,
that’s not the fault of the alarm or the insurer, in fact it’s why appdriven
systems are so popular in offering remote status updates
and management.
The good news is that Insurers are annually receiving fewer
claims for burglary according to the Association of British
Insurers. It’s a shame the paper didn’t focus more on the track
record of security technology combined with suitable insurance
protection and homeowners’ responsibilites - rather than making
out that insurers are dodging legitimate payouts.
INDUSTRY NEWS
Paul Tennent and James Kelly
step down from senior roles
Two major industry names announced that they
were moving on this month. Both James Kelly
and Paul Tennant revealed that they were
leaving their current senior roles.
Executive Director of Tavcom Training, Paul
Tennent, stepped down from the company
established in 1994 by the late Mike Tennent,
Paul’s father.
Paul played a key role in the development
and success of Tavcom, bringing his energy and
passion to the organisation for 19 years.
David Gill, Managing Director of the Linx
Group, states: “Paul has been instrumental in
both building this successful business and in its
continued success. On behalf of the Linx
International Group I would like to thank Paul
for his long service, hard work and dedication.”
Paul Tennent comments: “I have thoroughly
enjoyed my time helping to take Tavcom from
small business beginnings, housed in my late
father’s garage. I am immensely proud of the
reputation we have built for Tavcom Training in
the security sector. I wish Tavcom Training and
the Linx International Group every success for
the future.”
Earlier in the month, the BSIA announced
that James Kelly would be stepping down as
Chief Executive of the Association.
In the interim, David Wilkinson, Director of
Technical Services, will oversee the
responsibilities of the role as a search for a new
leader begins in earnest.
Simon Banks, Chairman of the BSIA, said:
“On behalf of the BSIA I would like to thank
James for his nine years of service for the
Association, and his many successes in leading
and championing the security industry. We wish
him well in his future endeavours”.
Market for home smart systems
set to continue growing
According to a new study, the global smart
home market will grow by almost a third in
2018 compared to the previous year. This
means that the various manufacturers in the
sector will have sold over 640 million smart
devices. In four years, annual sales will have
reached as many as 1.3 billion devices. Voice
control in particular is enjoying growing
popularity among users.
The Smart Home Device Tracker produced
by market research company IDC shows that
the global smart home market is expected to
grow by 31 percent in 2018, with total sales of
643.9 million smart home devices. Based on
an average annual growth rate of over 20
percent, as many as 1.3 billion smart devices
are expected to make their way into
households in 2022. That would mean that on
average every sixth person, regardless of age,
would own a smart home device.
According to market researchers, smart
speakers such as the Amazon Echo or Google
Home are the fastest-growing category, with a
five-year growth rate of 39.1%. While the record
of 100 million devices was broken this year,
forecasts indicate that as many as 230 million
smart speakers will pass over (virtual) shop
counters in four years. Smart lighting,
thermostats, door intercoms and security
systems are also becoming increasingly popular.
Scholarship
Open Day
attracts over
140 students
Paxton recently
welcomed students
to the Paxton
Technology Centre
to showcase what’s
on offer from the
2019 Paxton
Scholarship
programme. Over
140 enthusiastic
students attended
the scholarship
open day, where they discussed the latest
products with technology experts in
engineering, research and product design. The
students enjoyed hands-on product
demonstrations and discovered their potential
career opportunities with the company.
Samson Mwita, student at University of
Sussex, said: “I think it’s great that Paxton is
offering students this opportunity and guidance
with their studying. It seems like a fun exciting
company to work for and hearing about the
company’s journey directly from the CEO was
really inspiring.”
Launched in 2017, the Paxton Scholarship
now offers students studying engineering and
product design related courses, the opportunity
to win one of four scholarship places each worth
£10,000, plus a 3-month paid work placement
from July 2019. As part of the scholarship,
students will participate in current technology
research projects that will form the final year
project of their degree course.
2018 Paxton scholar Laurence Budd, BSc
Computer Science student at University of
Brighton, said: “I am working on an idea for a
new internal app and I’ll be testing some CCTV
cameras too.”
Commenting on the open day, Adam Stroud,
Paxton’s Chief Executive, said: “I am delighted
that we have been able to attract so many
students to our open day. Our partnerships
with both University of Brighton and Sussex
are going from strength to strength. The
Paxton Scholarship is an initiative that we
intend to build on each year. This year, we have
four scholarship places to award and I can
already tell that it’s, once again, going to be a
difficult decision.”
IDIS smart factory wins national
productivity competition
IDIS has been honoured with a “National
Productivity Award” presidential citation in
South Korea’s 42nd National Productivity
Competition, sponsored by the country’s
Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
The National Productivity Award
competition, run by the Korea Productivity
Center at COEX, Seoul, provides government
recognition for corporations, organisations and
individuals who have shown leadership in
applying productivity to achieve successful,
documented business outcomes.The award
and citation recognised IDIS for its customdesigned
IDIS Smart Factory, purpose-built to
match business requirements and
characteristics seamlessly.
The IDIS Smart Factory, which assembles
the varied components of the IDIS Total
Solution, operates with a flexible production
system, utilising big data to modularise and
refine production processes to ideally meet the
company’s requirements. Each process in the
IDIS Smart Factory is computerised—from
material warehousing to management,
production, function tests and even
packaging—resulting in increased productivity.
In addition, real-time production planning,
cause-of-defect analysis, and tracking were
able to be achieved by breaking down process
histories.
With the computerisation of the automatic
processes in the IDIS Smart Factory, if a certain
product is missing materials or doesn’t pass a
functionality test, it does not proceed to the
next stage. This blocks any possible defects,
enhancing customer satisfaction by improving
quality and creating products that can be
massively customised. As a result, IDIS saw
increased productivity, with decreased
inefficiency, allowing it to remain focused on
innovation, and the continual enhancement of
customer experience.
The UK’s fastest growing

security distributor
Dallmeier signs up for vendor finance
programme with White Oak UK
White Oak UK and Dallmeier have announced a new
partnership aimed at offering finance solutions to Dallmeier
UK business customers.
White Oak UK’s vendor finance programme will allow
Dallmeier to provide solutions to those customers that do not
have access to up-front capital. The partnership is in direct
response to multiple customer requests for such a scheme.
James Walker, Managing Director at Dallmeier UK, said,
“We believe that our partnership with White Oak UK
demonstrates our commitment to providing affordable
solutions for our business customers. White Oak UK’s
professional service compliments our trading philosophies
and that, coupled with White Oak UK’s competitive solution,
made our decision to partner with them straightforward.”
White Oak UK’s solution provides Dallmeier customers with
a complete end-to-end project management solution. Through
the approved Integrator partner scheme, the customer is now
able to deal with Dallmeier directly – from system design, to
installation and maintenance.
James continued, “We believe the partnership may also
lead to an increase in sales opportunities, with customers that
may have previously shied away from purchasing a Dallmeier
solution based solely on price perception. We feel that a
revenue base finance option will shorten our sales cycles and
enable easier cost–benefit purchasing decisions to be made.”
Rob Hulse, Head of Channel Development at White Oak UK
said: “We are excited to work alongside Dallmeier and provide
them with a range of flexible finance solutions to help them
increase orders and improve their cash flow.”
Policing challenges represent opportunities
for security sector companies
The Small Business Network (SBN) of professional security
companies has highlighted an opportunity for the private
security industry to support public services. Abbey Petkar,
spokesperson for the SBN and MDof Magenta Security said
that companies can deliver for their clients whilst working in
partnership with local police forces: “The police are doing a
fantastic job with limited resources and we are perfectly
placed to support them. Whether it be a CCTV supplier, alarm
company or manned guards, the industry is already working to
prevent criminal activity. We are on the look-out for
vulnerabilities in the community that could affect clients as
well as opportunists looking to make the most of any
situation. A closer working relationship with the police can
only improve this. In fact, there is even an opportunity for
those companies who have been properly certified to
undertake work on behalf of the police, supplementing their
forces and needs as appropriate.”
THE BOTTOM LINE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL
The interview that gets
the facts from the top
This month Simon Banks
talks to Richard Solly, Head
of Monitoring Services at
Southern and Northern
Monitoring Services, a leading UK ARC,
providing dependable fire, intruder, water
and flood detection, asset tracking,
temperature monitoring and much more.
What are the biggest challenges facing ARCs today?
Supporting the demand and delivering the right technology are the biggest
challenges ARCs face. Southern Monitoring Services (SMS), receive over 12,000
alarms and deal with more than 10,000 calls every day. The sector sees demand
continue to grow through increased alarm activity as well as new products and
services reaching the market. ARCs need to focus on keeping pace with testing
and delivering the right technology and continuously developing and investing, to
provide a quality service. At SMS, we have upgraded our datacentre and network
infrastructure, expanded our training resource and increased our operational
staff, all within the last 12 months. This brings a future ready, high integrity
service between two fully staffed ARCs, in Waterlooville and Manchester.
How can ARCs challenge professional competence of emerging
technologies, such as Apps signalling alarms direct?
Standards maintain a benchmark to the industry and accredited ARCs help drive
standards and service. Self-monitored and direct signalling Apps are a good
example of being outside that environment. NPCC evidence indicates these
provide a 19% Police response rate, versus accredited ARCs successfully
receiving a 99% Police response. Emerging technologies need to be proven
competent. It’s about challenging those that aren’t resilient and robust whilst
supporting and working with those that are. This year, SMS increased the inhouse
product testing team and built a secure sandbox environment to develop,
review and test revisions of existing technology. It gives us the ability to test new
technologies in a safe environment.
Amongst all these new technologies, what can ARCs do to ensure they
provide value?
Apps can be useful and have their place, but do not replace a competent,
accredited ARC and professional Installer proactively dealing with an alarm. The
current URN fee to enable Police Response is a very cost-effective route to
enhanced protection. ARCs will need to keep up with innovation in the future,
using technology and best practice to provide value to the customer at
appropriate pricing. Often, value doesn’t mean being the cheapest. SMS
surveyed customers last year to understand what was of real value in monitoring.
The results of this survey have led to enhanced product and services including
assisted living, temporary monitoring activated by apps, enhanced lone worker
services and a bespoke managed services team.
What is the Security Sector doing to support ARCs?
New technology that is effective and robust will help keep people and assets
safer. For example, artificial intelligence software is already helping SMS to
reduce false activations and assists operational staff to identify and focus on
important and urgent events quicker, lowering risk to property and people. ECHO
(Electronic Call Handling Operations) will enable signals to be passed from
accredited ARCs to the Police, faster and more effectively and will cut out nonaccredited
ARCs and self-monitored systems with high false activation rates.
IFSEC announces its
support for next
year’s SiX event in
Manchester for
security installers
“We know that it’s not
always possible to
come to IFSEC every
year so what SiX is
proposing is a great
way for the northern
security sector to stay
connected”
FSEC International knows that bringing the
Isecurity community together is vital and as
the UK’s leading security industry event, we
welcome new strategic partnerships –
particularly when delivered by longstanding
friends and colleagues with a deep
understanding of and reach into the security
sector.
Which is precisely why IFSEC is excited to
fully support the new SiX Event hosted by Pro-
Activ, publishers of PSi, Benchmark and Risk UK
magazines, taking place at Event City in
Manchester on 5-6 November 2019. Manchester
is an ideal location for an event of this type, as it
will provide security installers in the North with
an easily accessible opportunity to experience
the latest technologies currently on the market
and meet with the UK’s leading security experts.
IFSEC has always been a consistently proven
outlet for the security industry to meet with over
27,000 customers across an intensely focused
three-day period, where tangible business is
discussed and delivered. This year we saw over
43,461 leads generated and over 34% of visitors
had annual budgets of over £1million, making
IFSEC a core business strategy for
manufacturers and suppliers.
In addition, the hosted buyers programme
and meetings service deliver pre-arranged face
to face meetings with key customers, many of
whom are already placing orders with IFSEC
exhibitors.
“The industry requires a trade show in the
North of England so self-employed installers can
cut down on travel time and make their visit
cost-effective.” Andy Clutton, editor, PSi
PSi magazine has been an essential promoter
and supporter of IFSEC and is unrivalled in the
UK as the security installers’ magazine of
choice. So, the new SiX event is a unique
opportunity for their favourite journal to come
to life. The event will focus on helping installers
and integrators understand the very latest
technologies with a seminar programme
featuring presentations from subject experts as
opposed to associations or government bodies.
This will be complemented by a packed
product and services exhibition which will
provide manufacturers with direct access to
their northern customers – many of whom have
pressures on their time and availability. We fully
appreciate that sometimes getting to IFSEC is
not always possible so the next best thing is to
attend SiX- it’s like an IFSEC outpost for the
north!
Pro-Activ has over twenty-five years of
experience and relationships with the UK
installer community which makes the SiX Event
such a compelling development for the installer
community in the North. Readers of PSi and
Benchmark magazines have long-established
relationships with these leading journals so
providing them with a three-dimensional, real
time representation of the magazines will be a
tantalising proposition.
“While our magazines keep installers up to
date with innovations and developments in the
sector there is no event that specifically targets
their needs in terms of technology and running
a business,” said Andy Clutton, Editor of PSi.
“Furthermore, the industry requires a trade
show in the North of England so that the
installers, most of whom are self-employed, can
cut down on travel time and make their visit
cost-effective.”
Simon Parker, managing director of UBM
EMEA UK, organisers of IFSEC, said: “SiX is a
fantastic example of where two leading
organisations, with rich and extensive histories
of serving the UK security sector, combine
forces to provide northern based installers and
integrators with an event purely on their terms.
“We know that it’s not always possible to
come to IFSEC every year so what SiX is
proposing is a great way for the northern
security sector to stay connected. Security is
clearly now a major issue and fully focused
events, organised by industry experts with
formidable knowledge, should always be
welcome developments and Pro-Activ’s
experience and outreach means that they’re
perfectly placed to deliver the SiX event.’’
COMMENT
This month it was
announced that
London, Cardiff,
Edinburgh, Belfast,
Birmingham and
Manchester would be
getting mobile 5G
access in 2019. So
what could 5G mean
for the security
sector? Anna Sliwon
of IHS Markit makes
a prediction...
Devices equipped with
5G-capable chipsets
can offer superior
battery life and much
lower power
consumption in wired
systems
Is 5G the future of alarms?
he shutdown of the 2G network in the
TUnited States in 2017 had a ripple effect on
the market for intruder alarms, mostly
affecting the sales of control panels and
communicator modules. With many traditional
systems using 2G or public switched telephone
networks (PSTN) as alarm signal communication
paths ahead of the shutdown, the impending
mobile network re-farming required upgrades to
intruder alarm signalling modules. The
increased rates of equipment replacements in
the immediate run up to the shutdown date
resulted in a much smaller replacement market
in subsequent years. In fact, according to the
latest IHS Markit research on the global intruder
alarms market, shipments of control panels sold
to the United States market will experience a
compound annual decline of 4.9 percent from
2017 through 2022.
Advances in telecommunications
technologies are making intruder alarm systems
more versatile, by increasing the speed and
stability of communications between the
sensors, control panels and alarm receiving
centres. However, the rate of adoption of the
latest communication technologies in the
intruder alarm industry has been quite slow.
While 4G connectivity has been available
since 2009, 4G communicators were not used
frequently with intruder alarm systems until
recently. Pockets of data sent from traditional
intrusion systems are small, requiring little
bandwidth for transmission, but as more
devices – especially video cameras – are added
to intruder alarm systems, the demands on
alarm and signal transmission capacity will also
grow. With the promise of 5G offering much
higher speeds and connection stability, the
technology could open the opportunities for
more product and system innovation.
Traditional intruder alarm systems have
relied on PSTN and General Packet Radio
Services (GPRS) communication for signal
transmission. With the heightened demand for
signal transmission capacity, due to increasing
use of video cameras with security systems and
the growing number of sensors installed in an
average system, an alternative communication
path was required: internet-protocol (IP)
communication performed that role. While this
protocol has been implemented in a vast
number of systems around the world, IP
connectivity depends on the strength and
stability of the internet network supplied to the
home or the building. These can be
compromised in a number of ways, which is why
IP is often used as a back-up communication
channel to the primary GPRS channel.
In the world of internet of things (IoT) for
both residential and commercial applications,
devices equipped with 5G-capable chipsets can
offer superior battery life and much lower power
consumption in wired systems. This
functionality is crucial to reducing overall
system maintenance costs, increasing their
longevity and guaranteeing signal transmission
stability that is far superior to existing
technologies. In residential systems, the
benefits of longer battery life and improved
transmission capability could enable live video
verification of intruder alarms on a wider scale.
In commercial systems, 5G connectivity could
support deployment of smart buildings that aim
to improve the environmental footprint of
commercial buildings, while delivering the
benefits of automation.
5G could accompany cloud technologies in
enabling real interconnected environments and
to leverage big data. While the cloud has
enabled the processing of large data sets from a
variety of building and home systems, 5G could
greatly speed up the transmission between
systems, while improving connection stability.
These benefits are particularly important to
high-security applications where the costs of
unsent or delayed signals could be very high.
5G is still at a very early adoption and
deployment stage. The technology is only
beginning to roll out in certain countries, and its
full potential has yet to be realised. Any IoT
device or a security system equipped with 5Gcapable
chipsets will likely see a steep price
increase, before the technology can become
mainstream, like 3G and 4G.
Optex - BXS-AM Detector
What’s in the box?
PIR unit
Installation instructions
2 x 20mm self-tapping
screws
The appearance is
similar to some
lighting units so may
not be immediately
recognisable to
potential intruders as
an alarm device
Getting started
This is a wall or
pole mountable
IP55 outdoor
“curtain” PIR intrusion
detector that has dual
narrow passive infrared
detection zones either
side of the device.
Intended for example to
cover side walls of
buildings in order to
trigger an alarm when
people approach too
close to the property.
These side zones have a
range of up to 12
metres, giving a
coverage of up to 24
metres in total. The
appearance is similar to
some lighting units so
may not be immediately
recognisable to potential
intruders as an alarm
device.
The top cover is removed by a simple quarter turn
rotation of a slotted release mechanism. There is
no secure fixing. Power supply can be from 9.5 to
18 volts D.C. with a current demand of
approximately 34mA at 12v.
The Optex website includes some information
that is not included on the multi-language Quick
Reference installation instructions that are
included with the product. A QR code on the front
panel also gives access to this on-line information
for mobile phone access. Some of this information
is animated to help explain the features and
settings but it would perhaps be beneficial to
have a printable manual with more information
rather than just a pdf for download of the Quick
Reference sheet.
Hardware
Alarm cable entry is via a hole near the top of the
back cover with a knock-out section for an
additional cable. Alternatively, this aperture can
be enlarged. There is no space for this entry point
to be fitted with a cable compression gland and
although a small “wiring sponge” is fitted into
this aperture some sealant will likely be
necessary when used outdoors as the entry point
is just above the 9-way connector block that links
the power and alarm contacts. End-of-line
resistors can be added to the connectors or an
optional four pin resistor pack can be inserted
into a socket mounted just below the main
connectors. The resistor pack assumes common
rather than individual alarm outputs.
There are two drill-through holes for wall
mounting the unit plus another two for the
optional pole mounting plate. These would also
need to be carefully sealed to cope with typical
UK and European seasonal variations.
An optional back-box is available that allows
for conduit entry. A small spirit-level is set into the
casing (and back-box) to help verify the unit is
mounted level horizontally.
Set-up options
All switch settings ar e easily accessible and
clearly identified once the cover is removed. At
the top there are two slider switches for the
sensitivity setting of the Left and Right hand PIRs.
Between these is an eight-way DIL switch that
from 1 to 8 respectively has the following
functionality:
1 – LED On / Off.
2 – Alarm N.O. / N.C.
3 – Individual alarm output On / Off.
4 – Extra-High sensitivity Left PIR.
5 – Extra-High sensitivity Right PIR.
6 – N/A (future use).
7 – Anti-Masking On / Off.
8 – N/A (future use).
At the bottom of the unit are two sliders, one at
each side of the unit that switch the detection
range between 2.5, 3.5, 6.0, 8.5 and 12 metres.
This is actioned by physically raising and lowering
the individual lower PIR detector positions.
In addition to these switches, the rear
mounting panel can be raised or lowered in its
housing by approximately 7mm, identified as “To
Wall” and “Away Wall” and this has the effect of
extending the detection zones slightly away from
the wall by an angle of 3°.
Detectable speed is given as 0.3 to 2.0m/s.
The Extreme High Sensitivity setting increases the
Normal figure of 2.0°C at 0.6m/s to 1.0°C at
0.6m/s.
TEST
(continued from p14)
For an alarm event to trigger, both zones on a side of the device must
detect movement. This prevents small animals from nuisance
triggering the unit
Performance
At power-up the unit goes through a “warm-up”
process where the LEDs blink for up to
approximately 1 minute. In practice this was found
to be generally around 15 seconds. This is
followed by a learning mode for the anti-masking
setting to establish.
Regardless of the LED switch setting, the unit
will go into a Walk-Test mode for approximately 3
minutes once the cover is closed, this allows
confirmation of detection and range.
Each side of the detector has two zones with
the upper zone facing straight out towards the
horizon and the lower zone pointing downwards
towards the ground. The angle of this lower zone
sets the distance of coverage from 2.5 to 12
metres as stated above.
For an alarm event to trigger, both zones on a
side of the device must detect movement. This
prevents small animals from nuisance triggering
the unit. During setup, switch changes activate
immediately while the tamper switch is released
so there is no need to power-cycle the device to
make changes. The independent outputs allow
camera selections to be made if the alarm panel
or video recorder support such actions.
The tamper switch requires very little
movement of the top cover to trigger so as long as
this is correctly connected it should mitigate the
lack of a secure casing lock.
Mounting height is stated as 0.8 to 1.2 metres
and this is essential to get the range values
appropriately set, so this does potentially leave
them vulnerable as they can be directly
approached without triggering an alarm. In
testing the unit was found to readily achieve the
stated distances which are effectively changed by
changing the angle of the lower PIR detection
zone. The zone distance cannot be precisely set
for such devices of course as it is dependent on
variables such as mounting height, subject size
and sensitivity settings within the unit but the
walk test LEDs make it very easy to establish the
operational range for a given subject.
In To-Wall mode the device was able to provide
detection of subjects along the wall line on which
the unit was installed; the Away-Wall mode
extends the zones away from the wall by
approximately 3 degrees, a more detailed
explanation of the zone angles and spread would
have been helpful in assessing detection
capability.
On this model that has an anti-masking feature
the unit will provide a “Trouble” output if either
side of the device is covered or has its detection
surface obscured. This is stated to trigger after 20
seconds when in its initial 10-minute test mode
and then after 3 minutes when in standard
operating mode. In practice the unit triggered
after 13 seconds during test mode and just under
2.5 minutes in normal operation.
All alarm contacts are rated to 28v DC at
100mA, with alarm duration as 2 seconds ±1.
Conclusion
A very straightforward alarm device with clear
operation and simple set-up. Apart from the
reservations regarding cable entry and security of
access the unit performs well and should prove
easy to install.
D-Link - Wire-Free Camera Kit
What’s in the box?
Network hub
Two cameras
Magnetic mounts
Arm bracket
USB power charger
DC power adapter for hub
Ethernet cable
Quick install card
The simplicity of
installation is
essentially down to
the use of batteries
in the units rather
than any power/PoE
cabling
The security industry is technology-led and
therefore often follows the trends set out by
consumer products. For example, as we all
became aware of HD through TVs, the CCTV
industry soon followed with high def cameras. As
we all got smartphones the R&D departments all
came up with apps for viewing footage on our
devices. Then along came 4K televisions so
camera resolutions went up again. And then of
course we had the improvements in wireless to
make fitting alarms and peripherals easier plus
cloud storage for video data.
So looking at the way in which consumer
trends develop gives us an insight into what may
well be the next driver for the professional
security sector. Using this line of thought, we felt
it might be a good idea to take a look at one the
latest home user systems to hit the market to see
what features it boasts in case it gives us an idea
into what might be the way forward for new
launches in our market over the next year or so.
When it comes to home fitted systems there
are two categories; the basic systems and the
good ones. You can usually spot the good
systems by the price although with some, the
price is not the main attraction; it’s how much
work the user needs to do to install it that often
deems it a success or not. Good old Maplin used
to shift a bucketload of CCTV systems, but as we
know they weren’t exactly top notch and
expecting the home owner to be fitting network
cable for four or more cameras probably means
there are quite a few of these systems still sat in
their boxes - or just running one camera.
So we wanted to find a kit that was new and
feature-rich but also easy to fit. As a result, the
one we chose is probably in the higher price
bracket for a two-camera system (at time of
writing RRP is £441.99).
Getting started
On first reflection, the Wire-Free Camera Kit (DCS-
2802KT-EU) from D-Link, appears to have taken
on board a few ideas from the professional
systems out there, such as easy installation, IR,
cloud storage and two-way audio as well as
adding in new ideas such as total wire-free
operation from rechargeable batteries making the
system appealing to those who don’t fancy laying
cable but still want a high end image.
The kit contains two 1080p cameras with 140°
viewing angle, the network hub and all of the
necessary cables, chargers and fittings.
The instructions for setting up the kit must
surely be the most basic in the market consisting
only of a graphic requesting you find the ‘mydlink’
app on the Google or Apple store and a QR code -
and nothing more. Once the app was loaded onto
the phone the user is guided through set up,
creating an account and then scanning the QR
code to register the hub to the account.
Pressing the “sync” buttons on the camera ties
it to the hub and the software installation
procedure is finished. Pressing ‘sync’ on just one
camera synchronised both units.
To install the cameras in place there is a choice
of either a magnetic mount or an arm bracket for a
more permanent fixture.
Options
With no instructions of how to use the functions
of the system included in the box, it is down to
the person installing the kit to work though the
various options in the app.
Viewing the footage can be done by split
screen or individual camera and via this it is
possible to see battery life, signal strength, use
the two-way voice system (in live view), record
specific events or take a snapshot.
Each camera can be given a name which is
worth setting up first as both units are initially
listed simply as DCS-2800LH. Motion sensor
sensitivity, anti-flicker (50/60Hz), privacy mode
and ceiling mode plus the option of camera LED
on/off can be personalised via the app.
Using the Account screen the user can opt to
receive notifications when motion is detected
and to also receive notices from D-Link.
Event allows the viewing of cloud stored
video with sound and this can be downloaded or
shared to another service or the phone if
required.
One-Tap is a clever function that allows the
user to determine specific options for setting the
TEST
system for various scenarios such as being away,
at home, in bed etc.
Being a ‘smart’ compatible system the kit can
work with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and
IFTTT and also other D-Link products such as
sensors and plugs. Each kit comes complete with
twelve months of 14-day cloud storage (valued at
49.99) for free which is just one of the various
methods of storing recordings along with microSD
card, phone memory or USB hard drive in the back
of the hub.
Daytime in sunshine
Hardware
The cameras are the main attraction of the system
being easy to set up and configure. The simplicity
of installation is essentially down to the use of
batteries in the units rather than any power/PoE
cabling. With battery power comes the flexibility
of being able to move the cameras around when
required and IP65 rating means they are capable
of indoor or outdoor use. It is this feature that
complements the use of magnetic mounts for the
cameras - this also allows for easy removal of the
unit for charging the internal battery.
Daytime in bad weather
Performance
The system is certainly ‘smart’ having all of the
typical functionality that you would expect of a
modern Wi-Fi enabled, cloud storing CCTV
system, but this time bolstered by the added
portability benefits brought by battery powered
cameras.
The 1080p Full HD cameras worked well in
sunny conditions, surprisingly competently at
night and coped admirably on dark rainy days
with a shaded visitor (see images). As with any
camera, positioning is a key consideration but
aided here by the mobility available from being
wire-free, it is not a problem with this kit.
The packaging claims that the built-in IR will
enable night viewing up to 25ft which is probably
at the top end of what can be seen on the screen
but the motion detection does appear to work
that far out. Identification is up to around 8-10ft.
Battery life is affected by the amount of ‘live’
viewing carried out and the frequency that motion
triggers the unit into life. We found that dropping
the sensitivity of the cameras down to 5% took
out unwanted events from moving bushes etc, but
whether the reported ‘up to six months’ battery
life is attainable will depend on unit activity.
Conclusion
The kit contains very capable cameras with all of
the functionality you would expect from a modern
app-driven cloud CCTV system from a company
with a history in the networked technology arena.
www.psimagazine.co.uk
IR night mode
The use of rechargeable batteries for the
cameras is probably the game changer here and
this is the first time that we have seen battery
units allowing ‘live’ viewing, but obviously at the
cost of battery life.
We suspect that the lack of instructions included
within the kit means that the company is aiming the
kit at the app-using generation but it would be
useful to have some potted instructions on how to
set-up the basics. For example, the use of batteries
in the cameras is going to be the takeaway for the
industry on this product and it’s extremely likely we
will see similar launches from other manufacturers,
yet for battery systems to perform efficiently
without needing regular charging, correct motion
detection configuration is going to be a major factor,
something that could have been outlined in some
instructions/advice notes.
So would the installer use this kit? Well, the
freedom of battery power will appeal in providing
a swift install, but for the RRP of almost £450 with
additional cameras priced at £243.76 each
(Tekshop247.com) there are probably other
systems you would specify. For external areas
where cabling is an issue however, this kit would
offer a good quality solution for anyone happy to
run their CCTV through an app.
The kit contains very
capable cameras with
all of the functionality
you would expect
from an app-driven
cloud CCTV system
Long-range LiDAR software
enhancements announced
Optex has developed new versions of its product
firmware and configuration software for its laser
sensor, Redscan RLS-3060 series.
Version 8.0 of the RLS-3060 series firmware and
Redscan Manager feature upgrades for the longrange,
190 degrees 2D LiDAR series. Both models,
the RLS-3060L and RLS 3060SH will offer more
flexibility in managing dry contacts with the option
to switch from normally open (N.O) to normally
closed (N.C).
The new version brings features to the 30m
radius RLS-3060L with four detection areas that can
now be independently adjusted on an analogue
connection; and up to eight areas can be adjusted
on an IP connection. The shape of the detection
area can also be customised. An Area Allocation or
Masking function will enable users to precisely
define a number of independent detection zones.
Another feature now available for the standard
laser scanner model with these upgrades is the
Indoor/Outdoor Loitering Detection Mode. This
function detects any suspicious behaviour by
monitoring if a person or object is staying longer
than the preset duration of time in the selected
detection area.
For the RLS-3060-SH model the upgrades
enable a Detection Range Expansion mode
extending the detection area to 50m radius. Used in
horizontal mode this setting allows the creation of a
pre-warning zone from 30m (100ft) to 50m (165ft)
radius in which larger objects such as vehicles can
be detected. www.optex-europe.com
Rugged camera housing has
a PoE-driven wiper option
Redvision has added a PoEdriven,
wiper option to its VEGA
2010, rugged camera, housing
range. The Tru-park, silicon wiper
removes dirt and water from the
housing’s optically-correct, camera window.
When not in use, the wiper is concealed behind
the front bezel of the unit.
Wiper power comes from the PoE-driven,
CHAT interface board. This also provides
camera, washer and built-in heater power to
the VEGA, along with audio comms.
The unit is made from die-cast aluminum,
which is both IP67 weather-proof and IK10
impact rated. It has an integrated junction box
and all cabling is managed through its wall or
pedestal mounting brackets.
Simple key management
solution reduces risks
Traka 21 is a
plug-and-play
key
management
solution for
small and
medium-sized
businesses.
Designed as
a simple,
efficient system
to help users
manage their keys, Traka 21
ensures organisations can trace
business assets at all times. The
system individually locks every
single key or keyset stored in the
system in place, to help ensure business
operations are never jeopardised.
The key management system allows users
to trace and manage up to 21 keys or keysets,
with access to keys granted via a secure PIN.
By controlling and recording whenever a key is
used, security risks are minimised and a
business can trace who has accessed a key at
any given moment. This record can then be
viewed on the cabinet’s display, or can be
exported via a USB pen drive.
EDITOR’S CHOICE
The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss
new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day
activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our
attention so here we take a look at some of the products we
think you won’t want to miss this month.
New H.265 quad camera
features 4x4K sensors
The i-PRO Extreme H.265 quad
multi sensor camera from Panasonic
is equipped with four repositionable
lenses each with 4K (or FullHD) image
sensors, reportedly capable of offering clear
images of fast moving objects like vehicles.
This camera delivers 4K (3840×2160) at 15fps
or Full HD at 30fps pictures and is equipped with iA
(intelligent Auto) and ClearSight Coating, making it
suitable for capturing evidential grade images even
under the most challenging of conditions, such as
use in city surveillance and traffic applications.
According to data from Panasonic, despite of
the high resolution of 4 × 4K, the bit rate
achieved is lower than the one for one single 4K
camera of H.264. By dynamically controlling the
frame rate in addition to the refresh interval
(depending on the presence or absence of
motion), the bit rate at the time of scene shooting
without motion is further reduced.
The FIPS 140-2 Level 1 compliant unit also
features secure communication by pre-installed
Symantec certificate enabling tamper detection.
Fast-fit technology for rapid multi-site deployment
The IDIS Compact Solution series is designed for rapid, single and multi-site roll out and allows users to mix and match
analogue and IP technologies, reportedly making upgrades and system extensions simpler than ever.
The range includes a choice of “price competitive” network and HD-TVI cameras and recorders, all of which are
easy to install through one-click network
configuration. The line-up features 4-channel
compact recorders that can be conveniently desktop or wall
mounted.
The DC-D4212R dome and DC-E4212WR bullet PoE cameras
are designed for confined spaces yet deliver full-HD in live view
and playback (including on remote devices such as
smartphones) and come with motion detection, tamper alarms,
zoned privacy masking, day and night ICR and IR LED up to 20m.
A choice of four- and eight-channel IP or HD-TVI recorders
allows fast and trouble-free installation and lets installers take
advantage of existing coax cabling. The IP recorders also
benefit from H.264 live view which eliminates the need to
upgrade hardware peripherals. www.idisglobal.com
INTERVIEW
Real world technology
This month we talk to Gordon Morrison of Johnson Controls about his first
year in security and how to manage big brands
ordon Morrison is GB Sales Director for
Gthe Tyco access control and video brands.
He is responsible for developing and
driving the company’s sales strategy in order to
maximise support for consultants, system
designers, installers and system integrators
who recommend the installation of CEM,
Kantech, Software House access control and
American Dynamics, Exacq and Illustra video
surveillance solutions to their clients.
Prior to joining the company, Gordon had
performed a number of senior management
roles at GE where he worked for over 16 years.
PSI caught up with him a year on from him
taking up the role at Tyco, the security products
division of Johnson Controls.
You've been with the company for twelve
months, how has it been?
For me it has been a learning year as I have not
previously worked within the electronic security
sector. I'm used to running global teams from a
service or commercial perspective, but I'm an
engineer at heart, even if I do hide it very well
these days! It has been very interesting to look
at existing and emerging technologies, how they
can be used, and then determining how we can
help grow the marketplace.
The year has been good, although I guess
everybody always looks to be better and to r
generate more business. The good thing is that
I am managing a team who really know the
industry. So in respect of industry expertise,
while I accept I didn't bring that with me, I have
utilised my leadership skills to determine what
we are doing and what we can optimise to
achieve success. The way we are now
structured means we are ready to go to the
market and highlight the products and
solutions we have, to help us grow even more in
our next financial year.
What has been the impact of the Johnson
Controls acquisition?
We have now got a big corporation behind us
and so while we are out in the marketplace
offering access and video, we can now claim to
be able to deliver more of a 'total' solution,
which resonates well with the development of
intelligent buildings going forward. We have in
fact deployed this approach at our offices in
Cork, where colleagues and visitors holding
access cards do not need to press a button in
the elevator because it knows who they are and
will take them to the relevant floor. If you have a
corporation like Johnson Controls with its
comprehensive range of products and solutions,
it means you can talk to one company to get a
complete solution. I think that this approach will
make it even better going forward.
How do you manage the many brands you
have?
Technology choice is always determined by
what the end-user client wishes to achieve. Not
everybody is looking for the same result and so
we don’t try to shoehorn any of our products.
For example, some end-users just want an
access control system to simply restrict who has
access to sensitive areas of a building, while
others want to achieve much more. They may
wish to know if a meeting room is available
within the building and have the facility to book
it. Others will wish to take advantage of the
system’s capabilities to ensure compliance with
INTERVIEW
“A truly integrated
system will have
access and video on
the same front end
and as such, provide
more benefits than
linked systems or
disparate
technologies”
(continued from previous page)
health & safety procedures, such as verifying
that an employee or contractor has up to date
training certification.
We have pre-sales specialists for each of our
access brands, Kantech, CEM Systems and
C•Cure and they work with our systems
integrator partners to ensure the best fit
solution is selected for the customer. It is a
winning situation for all concerned as it means
we can also include victor, our Video
Management System (VMS), which seamlessly
synchronises video with data from access
control, fire, intrusion and other systems, to
deliver a unified system.
Are you keeping the Tyco name or going
over to JCI?
Almost all Tyco products now have Johnson
Controls branding. The security division of
Johnson Controls is the exception in that it will
continue to be known as Tyco. This decision to
retain the Tyco name takes into account that we
are an established and highly respected brand
within the electronic security sector. Therefore
we work for Johnson Controls, but sell Tyco.
How do you take the product portfolio to
market?
Our route to market is via our certified systems
integrator partners. We also have a team that
talks to consultants, end users and industry
bodies to ensure they understand the capability
of our products. As Tyco, we do not go out and
actually install anything. We
support our partners by
making sure they
are trained
and know how to best deploy our solutions as
part of our Partner Program. In this respect, we
are able to provide end-users with a list of
expert system integrators who can supply and
install our solutions.
Are there any systems that are not quite
so popular anymore?
I would say that is a hard question to answer
because of the depth of the product range we
have available to us. What I would say is that in
general people no longer just want an access
system to open a door. They want an intelligent
access system which helps with compliance,
scheduling and other business issues. As
systems are becoming more intelligent they are
capable of taking on more roles in building and
business management, rather than just being
security devices.
Is it the same story for CCTV?
Traditionally, when everything was analogue,
you had to have a bank of screens with
somebody watching them all. Today's integrated
cameras pick up incidents very quickly and they
can quickly be used to create a case of
sequences leading up to, and after an event.
This saves a lot of time for operators and
enables easy sharing of relevant data. I think
the use of the term 'integrated' is a bit
ambiguous these days because some people
will tell you a system is integrated because
there is a cable running between two units. But
a truly integrated system will have access and
video on the same front end and as such,
provide more benefits than linked systems or
disparate technologies.
Are you still selling analogue cameras?
We don't sell many analogue cameras any more.
We have controllers which enable a mix of
analogue and IP camera inputs. This is because
26
www.psimagazine.co.uk

SMOKE DETECTION
some end-users are still using analogue
cameras, but want to add high definition IP
cameras to their system. So rather than having
to rip those analogue cameras out, which may
have been deployed some time ago but are still
in good working order, customers can use an
Exacq controller so that they have a video
surveillance system which has a mix of analogue
and IP cameras.
Do you believe that AI cameras will
replace many technologies in the future?
I think that's a very long-term question. A
camera is basically a sensor. It therefore
depends how good algorithms are to define an
action you want to take using the input from
that sensor to make the correct decision. Yes, I
can see this in the future, but how long away
until this becomes standard will be down to
factors like end-user buy-in and reliability of the
algorithms.
There is currently more of a requirement for
facial recognition and vehicle number plate
analytics type solutions, rather than AI. If you
have a camera and an access control system,
you essentially have two sensors providing
information you can utilise and combine as
required, which is of more use to the industry at
this stage. I honestly think it is more important
to use technology to solve real world problems,
than trying to push a technology just because it
has been developed.
How does the partner programme work?
We currently have C•Cure and Exacq partner
programs and we will be rolling more out. There
is now someone in charge of these and any
interested parties should get in touch. We want
to make sure that when we deliver a solution
that it is installed properly and securely, (and we
are putting a lot of emphasis on cyber training
as part of the programs) by a certified partner.
As you would expect, we want to make sure that
anything with the Tyco name on, does what the
customer wants.
Has anything surprised you about the
security industry?
I have really been taken aback by the capability
of IP cameras. I now see that similar functions I
dealt with when I worked with machine vision
are being addressed in the real world by
surveillance cameras. I did not realise how
powerful the technology was in this sector and
how easily software can be used to integrate
systems to develop further benefits for the
customer in the same way that we used SCADA
software in engineering, to get the right
information in front of the right person at the
right time. It’s the same with security
management systems.
What do you think is going to happen in
the future?
What we need to keep in mind is that the
security market is still very wide, from the
person that just wants one analogue camera, up
to the higher level where intelligent unified
systems are required. I still think that people
will want to have control within their facility, but
will also want to back-up data in the cloud.
Cameras will feature more intelligence and
more advanced tools whilst sensors will only
improve. No matter what developments come to
market they must solve the problems that the
customer has, or it will not have a future.
We are working on a lot of forward thinking
features and ensuring that they
remain relevant for the
real world, such as
making the systems
even easier to deploy,
in order to help those
who install them.
“I did not realise how
powerful the
technology was in this
sector and how easily
software can be used
to integrate systems
to develop further
benefits for the
customer”
GETTING THE PERSPECTIVE RIGHT
Clearly detecting the near and far,
the big and the small
Range of indoor/outdoor LiDARs:
RLS-3060 & RLS-2020
– Up to 100m detection range
OPTEX’s laser technology provides reliable and versatile detection,
whatever the lighting conditions. The REDSCAN range includes
the RLS-2020 series that detects moving objects up to 20x20m
vertically or horizontally, and the long-range RLS-3060 series that
now provides up to 50m radius detection horizontally; or a 100m
virtual wall. The LiDARs can detect different size targets from big to
small, and the built-in analytics calculates the distance between the
ACCESS CONTROL
Access to the future
Here, PSI and Amer Hafiz, Technical
Director at Nortech Control Systems,
review the evolution of identity
credentials in access control
Access control is one of the holy trinity of
disciplines of the electronic security (not
fire) industry – access, intruder and CCTV.
These are the most common forms of security
system you will install, either on their own or
combined in any manner from linked to fully
integrated. All three have developed over the
years however it is access control that probably
has the most variations; there is more than one
way to open a door.
And opening the door is only one aspect of the
system. As with any other modern technology it is
also about gathering data. Deciding to open the
door or not is now coupled with factors such as
“who is opening the door?”, “when?” and “where
are they going?” being included in the
requirements of the tech bringing about an audit
trail for compliance.
Access control itself is defined as “the
selective restriction of access to a place or other
resource”. For an automatic access control system
to function, it requires a means of identifying
individuals to determine their access rights. The
form of identification can be anything from a
memorised password or PIN (personal
identification number) to biometrics
(measurement of a human characteristic).
Since the early days when access was granted
when an authorised PIN was entered into a
keypad, access control systems have evolved to
support many forms of ‘physical’ credentials.
Generally referred to as “pass cards”, these
credentials have taken many forms:
Barcodes – where an identity number is
printed on the card in the form of a machinereadable
series of variable width bars. Although
more secure than a memorised number, a barcode
can be easily copied or reproduced.
Magnetic Stripe – where a magnetic stripe on
the card stores an identity number within a
designated track. A special magnetic card reader
is used to read the number from the track.
Proximity Card – where an electronic chip on
the card holds the identity number and a built-in
antenna enables a compatible proximity card
reader to read the identity number using radio
frequency technology. The card simply needs to
be held within a few centimetres of the reader.
Smart Card – using a similar radio technology
to that of proximity cards, smart cards can hold a
variety of data within the chip. The data can be
read and/or written to the card using compatible
readers/writers depending upon the application.
For access control applications, an identity
number can be stored on the card and read by a
compatible access control card reader.
In each of these technologies, it is necessary
to issue a uniquely numbered card (or key fob) to
each authorised person. The unique number on
the card serves as their identity on the access
control system. Without the card, they would not
be able to gain access to the restricted areas. This
makes it necessary for them to keep their identity
cards with them whenever they need to move
around the building or installation.
Recent technological advances have
For an automatic
access control system
to function, it requires
a means of identifying
individuals to
determine their
access rights
ACCESS CONTROL
The ever-increasing
levels of security
being required will
most likely lead to a
wider use of facial
recognition as the
main biometric
credential
(from previous page)
made the need to carry identity cards
unnecessary. Two completely different
approaches have been used.
Biometric readers – The first was the
development of Biometric readers, where the
recognition of unique human characteristics such
as fingerprints or retina patterns are used for
identification, precluding the need for identity
cards. To support these systems, authorised users
must ‘enrol’ on the system, where their biometric
data is read and stored in a database. Whenever
the user needs to access a restricted area, they
must present themselves to a biometric reader at
the access point (e.g. places their finger on a
fingerprint reader). The data obtained is then
compared to the database to find a match to
determine their identity and check their access
rights before granting entry. Although this
provides a high level of security and avoids the
need to issue credentials, the readers are very
expensive and the process of looking up complex
data with a large database can be slow and
limiting.
Virtual credentials – The second alternative is
to use Smartphone-based ‘virtual credentials’ to
replace physical cards and fobs. A virtual
credential is a unique identity code that can be
securely sent from a cloud-based server to an App
on the user’s smartphone. Several virtual
credentials can be stored on the smartphone for
different access applications. A smartphone with
its virtual credential can be used to gain access to
restricted areas, making it unnecessary for the
user to carry cards or fobs. As most people now
carry their smartphones everywhere they go, they
are far less likely to lose their credentials or
forget to keep them handy.
The app can present the credentials to readers
using one of the smartphones built-in
communication technologies such as low power
blue tooth, NFC or QR Code. The technology used
would depend on the capabilities of the reader
and the type of smartphone being used.
If Bluetooth is used, it can offer a further
benefit as it can be used at distances of up to 15
metres from the reader, effectively replacing longrange,
hands-free reader technologies.
Where might credentials go
next?
In the short to medium term, identity cards will
continue to be used, with contactless smartcard
gradually replacing older technology proximity
cards. Virtual credentials on mobile devices will
become far more widespread. The ever-increasing
levels of security being required will most likely
lead to a wider use of facial recognition as the
main biometric credential. With advances in
Bluetooth technology providing increased
bandwidth, more information can be quickly
retrieved from smart devices, making the
combination of high-security biometrics and
smartphone apps a real possibility for controlling
access.
Going even further forward, AI capable
cameras are predicted by some to be the future of
not just access control but the entire security
industry when it comes to middle to larger size
applications. Whether this ever pans out will
depend heavily on the development of sensors
and algorithms that can manage such complex
data management tasks. Until then the door will
always be openable for dedicated access control
systems whatever physical or analytics based
identifier is used.
together raising standards
Meet the installer
Do you use a distributor or buy direct?
We use both distributors and buy direct from the
manufacturers. Like many companies we stick to
the same products for ease of servicing and
logistics as well as training. We use
Castle/Pyronix throughout our intruder alarm
discipline from the smallest residential property
to a large 200 zone commercial property. Our
intruder alarm equipment is usually purchased
through distributors. CCTV is usually Hikvision
and as we are one of the few companies with the
BS 8418 (detector activated CCTV) scope we also
use Dedicated Micros and the Optex Redwall
detectors. For access control it’s Net 2 and Videx
for smaller door entry type systems, for fire we
use a combination of Fike which we purchase
direct and Apollo/Advanced. We also supply and
maintain fire extinguishers and we are
SmokeCloak installers both of which are
purchased direct.
Is third party accreditation beneficial to
your company?
Without doubt third party accreditation has been
beneficial to us. Recognised by insurers, police
and fire authorities alike and for keeping
standards high NSI has been beneficial to us. We
applied for accreditation back in 1991 when it was
then NSCIA and we got caught up in the transfer
to NSI during our application stage.
In the early days of quality management (BS
5750 which became ISO today) I couldn’t see the
point of all the paperwork, checks and balances
etc, however as Justice has expanded over the
years and I become less hands-on with more staff
employed the quality management system is
beneficial. I believe though it is very difficult for a
smaller business with ISO to cope with the
workload that is often unnecessary when the
owner/manager is day-to-day hands-on.
What would be a typical project for you?
We have in excess of 10,000 installations to date
and every one of them differs slightly, so I can’t
say what is typical however a perfect installation
to us would be a multi-discipline consisting of
intruder and fire alarm systems, CCTV, access
control, fire extinguishers and some emergency
lighting.
A nice addressable fire alarm system of around
£40-50k is always comfortable to us as is an
equivalent CCTV system. However, we do carry out
many installations with an average order of
around £3-£5k.
We have concentrated on the SME and private
markets over the years which is what gives us our
strength. I prefer to have many customers owing
us a little bit of money rather than a few larger
customers owing us lots of money and the risks
involved with that.
85% of our customers would recommend us
and return to us year after year so we must be
doing something right.
Are there any common requests from
customers that give you problems?
Two that I can think of. Firstly, when they have a
fault with their system when arriving in the
morning but don’t think to contact us all day and
at 5pm, when they are going home, suddenly
realise they can’t set the system and phone us
frantically expecting an engineer there in ten
minutes to sort the problem out (remote servicing
has helped with this problem). Secondly, a quote
that they received many months ago and have sat
on despite us chasing, then decide they want the
work doing, but want it yesterday!
(continued from previous page)
Is there is a security skills shortage?
Without doubt there has been a skills shortage for
many years. I was on the original steering
committee in the 90s with Skills For Security
when there was no recognised apprenticeship and
we needed to bring new blood through.
I’m glad to say most of my engineers have been
put through the apprentice programme and
gained recognised qualifications. Most have
stayed with Justice Fire and Security but some
have gone off to other companies - either way it
has helped to get more youngsters into the
industry. Hats off to Simon Banks and Apprentices
For Security who have worked hard to encourage
youngsters into the industry.
What will be the impact of smart/home
automation on the security sector?
Smart home automation is coming thick and fast
and our industry needs to move fast if it wants to
keep up. This means manufacturers need to start
looking at the alarm panel end station as a home
hub for automation of power and lighting not just
a burglar alarm system. They need to get on board
with apps such as IFTTT which groups different
manufacturers’ apps together to make them work
seamlessly, for example, when the last person
leaves the house (triggered by a smart phone’s
geographical location) set the central heating to
economy mode, set the intruder alarm and turn
off/on the lights.
If we don’t move as an industry, we will lose
the residential market to the likes of Google,
Apple and Amazon who have the technology and
the devices in our homes already.
What is the industry’s biggest myth?
I think with domestic customers the myth that if
you have an intruder alarm or CCTV “you must
have something worth stealing” - everyone has
something worth stealing! The car keys are the
favourite these days and whilst it can be a bit of a
grudge purchase one thing we have found is that
when someone has been broken into without an
alarm system the first thing they do if they move
home is have that system fitted as a priority - a
case of once bitten...!
How will AI affect the future of technology
in the market?
As mentioned in the previous answer, AI will
advance very quickly over the next decade and
not only in the residential market. I think the
camera and the correct AI software will replace
the intruder and fire alarm as well as the access
control system. A camera with sufficient analytics
can recognise fire, a face, a number plate etc, so
will replace all these systems eventually. Coupled
with advanced CCTV networks and AI anybody
who commits a crime will get caught.
Are you concerned about Brexit?
I don’t think Brexit will affect us directly and our
incoming revenue. Our customers are all based in
the UK and I don’t see a change in need when it
comes to electronic security. I am concerned
about the cost of goods increasing substantially,
which may be the case if the Pound gets effected
substantially or we have difficulty importing
products.
What would make your job easier?
Less changes in health and safety, standards and
regulations would help, but on a day-to-day basis
it would be the integration of software so we can
see what’s happening in the business easier. We
use one of the industry’s leading security installer
software systems which is very good, but it would
be nice for it to integrate better with our CCTV
systems, ARCs, purchasing and suppliers
software etc.
Will England ever win the football World
Cup again?
I think so, but only if the young players are
brought back properly making sure we have
English players in the premiership giving them the
route up to the English squad.
PROMOTION
SETTING A NEW STANDARD FOR PTZ CAMERAS
Although there is certainly no shortage of PTZ
cameras on the market, two recently
launched Illustra Flex IR PTZs from Tyco, the
security products division of Johnson Controls, are
likely to attract the attention of consultants,
specifiers, system designers and installers
involved in expansive area projects such as
airports, car parks, city centres and solar farms.
The two new 2MP IR PTZ cameras are packed
with functionality which enable them to collectively
provide an affordable solution for virtually any
video surveillance application where the cameras
are required to cover wide areas in varying
environmental and light conditions.
“The price/performance ratio of these two new
Illustra models is truly impressive, but they are
also equipped with a long list of features which
deliver real-world practical benefits to users,” said
Stuart Bettle, Video Product Marketing Manager
EMEA for Tyco, the security products division of
Johnson Controls. “For example, the combination
of 30x optical and 12x digital magnification means
operators are able to use either model to zoom in
to see close up detail of any activity. The ability to
do so is significantly enhanced by adaptive IR
illumination which adjusts the intensity of the IR in
line with the operator controlled zoom setting of
the camera.”
Adaptive IR Illumination -The IFSO2P6INWIT
Illustra Flex IR PTZ camera, which is designed for
indoor use, has built-in adaptive IR illumination
which enables it to capture high quality images in
night time conditions at a distance of up to 25
metres, whilst the outdoor IFS02P60NWIT’s
adaptive IR illumination has a range of 150 metres.
Optical Image Quality - The IFS02P60NWIT
Illustra Flex IR PTZ camera, which is equipped with
True Wide Dynamic Range, is designed for
challenging outdoor applications and is able to
operate effectively when temperatures are as low
as -40°C. It is packaged in a bubble-free, IP66
environmentally sealed and IK10 vandal-resistant
case, instead of a transparent dome cover usually
fitted to PTZ cameras. This negates the potential
problem of IR diffused reflection and maximises
image quality, regardless of the camera tilt angle.
It also offers Power over Ethernet (PoE) support
via a separately sold IEEE 802.2bt injector. This
greatly reduces installation time as there is no
need to provide separate power cables and plug
points for each camera.
Smart Bandwidth Management - The two new
Illustra Flex IR PTZ cameras are supported by
Illustra® IntelliZip which provides powerful
bandwidth management beyond H.264 and H.265
compression, reducing network bandwidth and
video storage requirements. This embedded
technology continuously monitors and optimises
system streaming parameters to match the level of
activity within a camera’s field of view. When the
camera detects motion, Illustra® IntelliZip
automatically adjusts the video quality to ensure
every detail within the region of interest is
captured clearly. When the scene becomes static,
Illustra® IntelliZip continues to optimise bitrate.
Failover Redundancy - The VideoEdge®
TrickleStor feature built into Illustra Flex cameras
allows video recording to continue at the edge if
there is disruption to the network. This means that
if communications between an exacq or
VideoEdge® NVR and cameras are interrupted, the
camera automatically detects the anomaly and
begins recording video onto an SD card. As soon as
connection with the network is restored, the video
recorded on the SD card is transferred to the NVR’s
hard drive for seamless viewing when required.
Cyber Protection - Some of the features of these
new PTZ cameras include multi-level password
protection, IP address filtering, user access logs
and certificate management. This is because both
have been designed and built subject to the
rigorous procedure of the Tyco Security Products
Cyber Protection Program which was one of the
industry’s first to offer a holistic approach to cyber
security for physical security products. It has been
developed with the benefit of experience of
providing high security and mission critical
solutions to Government and multi-national
customers over several decades.
The program takes on-board feedback from IT,
security professional and cyber security experts, in
order to combine best practice during the product
development, testing and evaluation process, as
well as configuration guidelines for compliance, in
order to protect our physical security products
from attack, damage, disruption, unauthorised
access or misuse.
The six part program is designed to give
installers, system integrators and end-users, the
confidence that Tyco has minimised the possibility
of introducing vulnerabilities into its electronic
security solutions.
Illustra Flex IR PTZ
PANEL
The security industry in 2019
It’s that time again for the PSI
Panel to polish the crystal ball and
predict what will happen in the
industry in the next year. Will 2019
be the year of integration, AI, IoT
and smart systems or will Brexit
dominate our thoughts?
Gareth Williams –
Oprema
I see 2019 offering further
consolidation and shake out
within the security and fire
industry. There’s been a
significant increase in merger
acquisition over the past 12
months and I see that trend continuing. Many
companies have struggled with cash flow and
profitability offering opportunities for larger
cash rich organisations to acquire these. The
rise in fuel costs, weakness of the pound and
general uncertainty over Brexit will no doubt
cause some price fluctuation within the fire and
security market in Q1 2019.
We often follow other markets and home
automation within the US sector has been
growing at 40% per annum over the past 5
years. The evolution of Amazon Alexa, Google
Assistant, Hive and Nest has given the average
home owner accessibility to this type of
technology. Personally, I think there will be one
common interface, be it intruder or another
discipline that will pull these technologies
together for intuitive user experience. Other
trends to consider will be cloud based solutions
across the full security spectrum. End users
looking to reduce hardware and onsite costs
whilst utilising centralised outsourced services
such as AWS (Amazon web services) and
Microsoft Azure.
For all companies importing products,
especially those buying in dollars from China
(Dahua/Hik distributors in particular) in large
volumes the uncertainty over the pound versus
dollar rate poses significant uncertainty for the
market. Many companies hedge and forward
buy on the dollar however we are in the security
market and not currency traders so some
certainty over Brexit would be most welcome.
www.psimagazine.co.uk
Tim Northwood –
Inner Range
Brexit will undoubtedly be on
people’s minds for 2019.
Personally, I think whatever
happens with the official Brexit
deal, or no deal, Europe will still
want to trade with us. But the possibility of
trade tariffs is already a big consideration and is
causing uncertainty.
Preparation will be vital for the fire and
security industry – as with all industries.
Companies can help protect themselves by
having sales operations and warehouses within
Customs Union countries, or finding ways to
ship products in directly and not from the UK.
Aside from Brexit, I think we’ll see
continuing technical improvements, such as
with analytic possibilities. That could be via
video content, or via the kind of software in our
products that allows you to map and analyse
what an organisation’s people are doing and
when. It can provide highly useful information
for business improvements quite outside of the
security market.
I think we’ll also see the mainstreaming of
using mobile phones as access credentials.
Right now, only a few companies do this. But I
think this will increase, and the credentials
will be become more secure than they are
currently.
(continued over)
“I think whatever
happens with the
official Brexit deal, or
no deal, Europe will
still want to trade with
us. But the possibility
of trade tariffs is
already a big
consideration and is
causing uncertainty”
PANEL
(from previous page)
We’re seeing more robotic solutions starting
to be talked about, from drones, machine vision,
robotic systems and all integrated into a
common platform, hopefully we will see some of
this come to the forefront this year.
Is 2019 the year we see the point where video
becomes a by-product of the metadata gathered
to support this? Let’s see.
2019 is also the year Brexit would or would
not have an impact on trade and services , being
as I am not a politician and don’t know how my
time machine works, I’m going to leave it to the
very intelligent amongst us to make such
predictions. if I had to make a comment, then in
the short term maybe product would take longer
to get In through border and port controls, but
let’s see what the future holds.
“The fire and security sector will continue to embrace the
opportunities of smart technology into 2019, in both
commercial and residential settings, with more and more
solutions installed becoming integrated through IoT”
38
Otherwise, the big issue for the sector will be
about protecting data. I don’t mean GDPR.
Rather, preventing unwanted access to IT
systems. Access control has embraced the
‘internet of things’ with many benefits. But now
lots of people have remote access with tools
and apps, which also create opportunities for
hackers. One of the on-going challenges for
manufacturers, installers and end-users is how
to tighten up security around who can access
your system and how.
David Davies – DVS
2019! Wow we are here
already. Well what a year this
looks to be for the security
industry, the rate at which
products are developing,
being released and deployed
is incredible.
2019 looks set to be the year of AI growth in
many forms, with facial recognition, analytical
alarms, access control, fire detection, retail
analytics, all benefiting from AI and “deep
learning” processors and algorithms.
Some of the products we have seen
information on, solution documents and videos
really are exciting me and others hopefully.
Jamie Allam – Amthal
Fire & Security
The fire and security sector
will continue to embrace the
opportunities of smart
technology into 2019, in both
commercial and residential
settings, with more and more solutions installed
becoming integrated through the Internet of
Things.
In commercial settings, intelligent buildings
and corresponding management systems, will
evolve to create smart workspaces for
employees that truly integrate with mobile
technology.
The aim on the surface is to continue to drive
efficiency and building automation, alongside
space utilization. But there is a greater trend
occurring, one that effects the culture of
business, with employee satisfaction and a
focus on mental well-being increasingly
significant.
This drive to connect people with the
buildings they occupy and provide peace of
mind, welcomes employees to have their say and
create their own personal working environments.
It’s becoming a significant human resources
topic as more companies are focused on
attracting and retaining the best talent.
Understanding the new workplace
environment and staff expectations is
something the security industry has had to learn
quickly. It’s meant having to adapt and welcome
new skills into its workforce, increasingly
balancing experts in traditional security
installations with new generation ‘mobile-first’
mindsets. This coming on top of a widely
www.psimagazine.co.uk

acknowledged shortage issue has meant we
have had to think differently to attract and
retain the strongest talent.
In the residential sector, we have moved
forward once again as increasing numbers of
homeowners look for ways to integrate home
security into their mobile-connected lifestyle.
And this is no longer simply considering alarm
installation, but also CCTV, video doorbells and
visual verification.
The rise in opportunities in smart home
technology are clear, especially with
homeowners faced with the constant news
references to budget cuts in Police Forces and
consequential lack of priority to burglaries.
But we will need to continue into the new
year to work on the advantages of choosing
professional installation over DIY solutions,
considering all aspects from price point to
design and integration capability.
Bringing these elements together will
undoubtedly change the shape of the industry.
2019 may well bring further acquisition activity
in the sector as some of the well-founded new
entities continue to gain market share by
purchasing SMEs.
And this is all with the backdrop of the
uncertainties surrounding Brexit. At time of
writing, our Prime Minister is holding an
emergency cabinet meeting to ask senior
members to sign off on a Brexit deal. Whatever
the outcome, the transition period will last until
the end of 2020, undoubtedly leading 2019 to
continue as a period of uncertainty.
In summary, 2019 offers an exciting
opportunity to embrace the advances in smart
technology, for commercial and residential
premises.
Despite the ongoing Brexit negations,
repercussions of which will be felt for years to
come, the positive opportunities for the fire and
security installer will continue. This is
especially to those prepared to evolve with the
discerning consumer, who increasingly operates
on a personal perspective, looking to create
their own smart workplace design and home
security operation.
James Min –
IDIS Europe
For us the outlook for 2019 is
positive and the year will start
following a huge growth surge
in 2018. We have a healthy
pipeline of small to medium
installations together with some large
deployments in both the private and public
sector. In general, the UK surveillance market
remains buoyant.
We can expect to see AI/deep learning
continuing to be a big trend as new solutions
are bought to market that are more accurate,
affordable and easier to use. The potential for AI
is still untapped with a huge opportunity for AI
outside of just surveillance applications.
Manufacturers are now working diligently to
develop end-to-end video solutions that
encompass AI for market sectors in the same
way traditional analytics have been packaged
up in retail, for example.
The increased use of analytics and AI will
also make downtime even less appealing and so
we’re likely to see greater demand for failover
“We can expect to
see AI/deep learning
continuing to be a big
trend as new solutions
are bought to market
that are more accurate,
affordable and easier
to use”
(continued over)
PANEL
(from previous page)
“As an industry we’ve
already made good
progress in video
features and benefits
deliver real value for
the end user, they
remain little more
40
and fault tolerance technologies. Network
security concerns, aging systems, the desire to
transition to higher resolution cameras and IoT
integration will also continue to be drivers for
upgrades.
At the same time, Brexit is a concern for most
organisations and like any business operating
in the EU we have strategies ready to execute
whatever the outcome.
What we do know right now is that since the
referendum, UK growth has fallen behind that of
other G7 nations, productivity is poor, and many
businesses are delaying investment due to
economic uncertainty.
The knock-on effect is unlikely to have been
realised as it can take a couple of years before
security system packages come out to tender
for major new builds and fit outs. So, while
many of us have an optimistic outlook for next
year, we also need to be mindful that the recent
lack of investment is still likely to be felt further
down the line, particularly for project-focussed
manufacturers and their installation partners.
Laurence Kenny –
Pyronix
Throughout 2018 we’ve seen a
continued shift in the value
proposition that a security
system offers. Accelerated by
technological change,
products and solutions
offering periphery features and benefits
compared with traditional security offerings are
becoming more commonplace; repealing the
grudge purchase reputation of security. This is a
trend that will not only continue throughout
2019, but one we must keep pace with to
maintain professional security’s
competitiveness in an increasingly crowded
marketplace.
Observing the latest trends emerging in the
tech world, we see voice increasingly utilised as
the next phase of UI, while facial recognition is
becoming more commonplace than fingerprint
in smart devices. These trends, alongside the
proliferation of tech companies into different
markets will be key drivers of innovation going
forwards universally across all industries,
including security. Where the security industry
needs to respond is in the application of these
technological trends in professional systems,
while maintaining security integrity and
standards.
However, we need to recognise that this will
naturally have a slower uptake with EN
certifications and insurance regulations that
need to be adhered to. It will be vital in 2019
that we can continue to evolve and develop our
offerings; maintaining security standards, while
recognising the apparent trade-off between
system security and operability. This is because
it is the level of security we deliver that gives
our systems the competitive advantage in a
marketplace which is becoming crowded with
IoT players. We must be able to communicate
that value to the consumer.
We can also expect Brexit to undoubtedly
have an impact on businesses, especially with
the degree of uncertainty in any final deal or
future relationship with the European Union. To
be able to quantify that impact is difficult, but
businesses being resilient to change – be that
technologically, or otherwise – will ensure
competitiveness in disruptive environments.
Chris Stott –
Hadrian Technology
It’s estimated that by the end
of 2019, more than 3.3 trillion
hours of CCTV footage will be
captured daily. As an industry
we’ve already made good
progress in video analytics,
but unless features and benefits deliver real
value for the end user, they remain little more
than a distraction.
Increasingly our customers are looking to
unlock genuine business intelligence from
their CCTV footage, and we as an industry
need to focus on delivering features and
analytics that provide real return on
investment.
With increased content will also come an
increased demand for sustainable and costeffective
storage – in the last eighteen months,
we’ve already seen the launch of a Video
Surveillance as a Service (VSaaS) system, and
I think in 2019 we will see this drive to harness
the power of cloud storage and artificial
intelligence to deliver innovative yet costeffective
solutions come to the fore.
Breaking down both sides of the RMR
business model
The concept of recurring monthly revenue (RMR) in the
security industry has begun to shift over the last few years, as
it once only referred to integrators monitoring and managing monthly contracts
with end users. Now, with the proliferation of cloud-based technology, its
definition has changed to incorporate more than just a legal binding: companies
are no longer just selling systems, they’re providing a service.
Most integrators and dealers are in favor of an RMR setup, which provides them with the opportunity to serve customers
while simultaneously building consistent revenue for their businesses. They can present customers with added flexibility when it
comes to their security solutions, allowing them to overcome challenges they may not be able to take on themselves.
RMR also enables integrators to develop a stronger connection with the customer, conveying that they understand their
specific needs and will always be available to provide the necessary service. This can also
lead to a potential increase in business down the line, as the integrator becomes a trusted
partner in the end user’s eyes. For more visit: vanderbiltindustries.com
Open Door is an online service from PSI that provides in-depth information from a selection of
market leading companies. Here are some of the highlights from the pages of Open Door.....
Inner Range and Zwipe partner with
technology for card access systems
Inner Range access cards include MIFARE DESFire EV2 chips.
These offer excellent security, privacy and multi-application
support. Our Sifer readers deploy 128bit AES encryption from the card through to
the door module, providing a far superior level of security than traditional Wiegand
based card readers.
We now partner with biometric technology company, Zwipe, which means our
customers can add fingerprint data to credentials and, crucially, continue to use
their existing card readers.
Zwipe’s biometric credentials eliminate unauthorized credential use, prevent loaning or borrowing of a credential, render lost
or stolen credentials useless and allow you to replace PINs and passwords with your
fingerprint.
Customers don’t need to buy costly new readers. The system can use our encrypted Sifer
readers and only stores the biometric data on the card rather than in a central database.
The smart way for a more
efficient video security project
The time consuming and costly task of planning,
configuration, installation and reporting of a video
security project has just been made simple by a very clever app from
Bosch, Project Assistant.
Designed and developed by Bosch Security Systems to assist system
integrators, the Project Assistant app is available to download for free
from various App stores for installation on desktop, tablet and
smartphone devices, and works on Apple, Windows and Google platforms.
We wanted it to be accessible to everyone, because everyone should be benefiting from the control, transparency and efficiency
made possible by the Project Assistant app at every phase of a video security project.
Now, project set-up and pre-configuration can start in the office without the physical camera.
Only the project plans, IP addresses and a password from the client are required for the system
integrator to create a new project via the app (or an Excel-compatible file format), with the option
to set up per camera, or multiple cameras at once.
Texecom Cloud Services: putting
installers in control
As more users switch to the Texecom Connect platform,
so the new cloud service gives installers enhanced
control over their estate of alarm systems. It allows full management,
similar to connections via the Wintex software package, but with simpler
control and more access to Connect functionality.
With additional functionality for Texecom Connect also in the pipeline,
the new cloud platform will make it much easier for installers to better
deliver a high level of support to customers. Changes to system
configurations can be made ‘on-the-fly’, meaning site visits can be
minimised if the customer wishes to adjust certain system parameters.
The platform also simplifies the task of scheduling remote service visits as scheduled health checks allow the system to be
interrogated remotely, delivering an accurate and comprehensive report in just a few minutes. These can be used for faultfinding,
as well as identifying potential issues before they become a problem for the customer.
Biometric access control for
Zurich’s tallest building
At a height of 126 meters, the 36-story Prime
Tower is Zurich’s tallest building and number two
in Switzerland. Its 40,000 square meters of floor
space can accommodate more than 2,000
workplaces. The tower’s details include a 10-
metre-high entrance hall and the Clouds bar and
restaurant on the top floor boasting a view far out
across the surrounding landscape.
To meet the Prime Tower’s requirements,
Bosch recently implemented a modernisation
project featuring a combination of electronic and
biometric access control.
“Our owner, the firm of Swiss Prime Site
Immobilien AG, attaches great importance to
monitoring exactly who is inside the building at
all times,” explained Annika Hammes, who heads
the trustee department at Wincasa, a building
services outfit that was contracted to design and
execute the solution.
Error-free biometric identification is
accomplished by contactlessly reading the vein
patterns on the backs of people’s hands. A total of
120 hand vein readers have been installed in the
building and connected to the controllers of the
eight elevators. Once employees and guests have
been biometrically registered, they board lifts
that automatically take them to the right floors.
Encrypted ID cards are used to access the rental
units, thus making sure that persons can only
enter zones for which they have been authorised.
All relevant security information is collected in a
management system so that the responsible
Dome cameras help keep rail
improvements on track
Network Rail is keeping a close eye on work being
carried out at its Ambergate rail site with the help of
new video surveillance dome cameras.
Network Rail required several site monitoring
systems to provide them with live video streams of
the Ambergate rail site in order to minimise
walkouts and ensure compliance with its health and
safety regulations. Inside Out Group were awarded
the contract to provide four separate monitoring
systems for the site.
“This was an interesting, as well as a challenging
project to work on in that the monitoring systems
needed to be sufficiently robust to be able to work
in tough track side conditions,” said Jay Dale, Head
of Time Lapse for Inside Out Group. “With the rail
improvement work being carried out in remote
locations, the camera systems also required
standalone power sources without any reliance on
generators.
“We met with staff from Network Rail to establish
their exact site monitoring needs. This helped us
give detailed advice and recommend specific CCTV
products that fit Network Rail’s needs.”
Inside Out Group specified the 2 megapixel
Wisenet XNP-6040H PTZ domes for all the required
camera locations.
Working with Network Rail’s S&C North
employees always have everything in view and
can respond quickly when there is a need.
Bosch handled everything for this project:
advising the client, and then planning and
implementing the system. The modifications were
made without interrupting use of the building,
which was a major challenge not only for the
project team, which therefore had to work very
swiftly, but also for the tenants themselves.
“This [project] called for very close
cooperation between the Bosch team and the
mixed-use site management (MUSM) team of
Wincasa AG, which met the requirements for
continued building use while the work was
ongoing,” explained Hammes.
Alliance Doncaster team and with the help of
distributors Norbain, Inside Out Group were able
to have all the cameras delivered to site and
working within 48 hours of the commencement of
the project. Each of the four systems are battery
powered, negating the need for any costly cabling
and the cameras have been attached to existing
site structures which helped minimise installation
time. H.265 compressed live video streams
captured by the Wisenet XNP-6040H domes are
being transmitted over 4G mobile network to the
control room, with secure logins also enabling
authorised personnel to remotely access the video
via their smartphones, tablets and laptops.
Panel and suppression system
protect new recycling plant
Kentec’s Syncro AS fire alarm panel and Sigma XT
Fire suppression system have been chosen by
East Coast Fire & Security and Fire Shield Systems
for a collaborative project to install a fire
protection system at Grundon Waste
Management’s new Bulk Recycling Centre in
Banbury.
East Coast Fire & Security was employed to
design, supply, install and commission an
addressable fire alarm system that integrates with
the new fire suppression system.
Two Syncro AS single-loop fire panels were
specified and installed 165 metres apart. They
were linked together using a network card and
two 2 –core 1.5mm fire resistant FP cables,
providing complete control from either panel on
all devices, even on opposite sides of the plant.
East Coast Fire & Security linked the fire alarm
system to an alarm receiving centre, for 24/7
monitoring of the entire site. It also provided and
installed the status unit cables, containment,
along with addressable sounder / beacons, IPrated
manual call points in the main recycling unit,
detection and manual call points in both plant
rooms and devices in the weighbridge including
the installation of the status units.
Store uses facial recognition to
prevent retail theft
Ontario’s 56,000 sq ft Cosmo Music store is using
face recognition analytic to help prevent
shoplifting.
Needing to replace a 20-year-old analogue
video system, Vice President and COO Rudi
Brouwers, started researching modern video
management software. Initially he intended to
purchase IP cameras and a basic VMS with the
ability to record and playback but he turned his
focus to finding one that went beyond basic video
management to offer business intelligence. In
particular, he was interested in face recognition,
which would enable the identification of
suspicious customers.
Working with integrator Northern Alarm
Protection (NAP), Brouwers looked at a number of
Syncro AS is a multiprotocol
panel,
providing choice in
system design. It can be
used to network up to
64 panels, meaning a
system can be
expanded as and when
required. The Sigma XT
suppression system
comes with three
detection zones
meaning extinguishant
release can be
configured to activate
from any combination of
detection zone inputs.
Kevin Swann, Managing Director at Kentec,
says the project is an excellent example of
collaborative working: “East Coast Fire & Security
and Fire Shield Systems have designed a system
that provides the utmost in fire protection –
particularly impressive was the installation of a
total of ten cables that enable all systems to work
blueprint for how installers and manufacturers
can work together for the benefit of our clients’
fire safety.”
different systems, and ultimately decided on Axis
cameras and Senstar’s Symphony VMS with face
recognition analytics.
“I was sold on Symphony when I got to
actually use it,” said Brouwers.
Before implementing the face recognition
video analytics, when a suspicious customer
was identified through video surveillance,
Brouwers would screen capture an image, email
it to staff, and ask them to keep an eye out for
that person. With Senstar’s Face Recognition
video analytic, Brouwers can flag suspicious
customers in Symphony. When that person
enters the store again, Brouwers is
automatically notified. Brouwers tested the
analytic saying: “One of our staff had a full
beard one day and it was shaved off the next day
and the system still picked him up.”
Video entry system installed at
waterside apartments
A waterfront development in London has been
fitted with a new video entry system from Urmet,
featuring stainless Elekta Steel panels and handsfree
Miro colour monitors.
The installation, by Firemain UK, was at Victory
Place in Limehouse, East London. The complex
was built in 1996 and was one of the earliest
developments in the Limehouse Basin. The
various buildings are made up of one-, two-, and
three-bedroom apartments.
Twelve Elekta Steel panels were fitted to the
entrances of each block and to the main gated
entrance. The entry panel has a one-piece
Upgrading video image quality
at Kew Gardens
When the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in
London needed to expand and upgrade its
outdated analogue CCTV surveillance system,
they turned to The ITS Group, who provided a HD
video system from Hikvision.
Kew’s CCTV control room operations team
works to monitor the safety and security of the
park, but a need was identified to upgrade the
existing legacy analogue CCTV system to one
capable of transmitting and recording in true
High Definition.
ITS Group Director Tim Dyer said the Kew
project required upgrading equipment in the
Gardens’ security control room, and providing
site-wide cameras which view all entrances for
both public and trade, as well as various
strategic locations throughout the Gardens.
The massive 330 acre site is a huge area to
monitor in itself, and Tim Dyer says the very
public nature of the Gardens and its operations
meant the actual video system installation
posed some security continuity challenges.
“Because the control room needed to be in
operation 24/7, close co-ordination was required
between ITS and the security team on-site,” he
says. “We needed to maintain the CCTV in line
with changing site requirements. This, coupled
with access issues and working in a public
environment, was very challenging.”
stainless steel body with flush elements and LEDilluminated
buttons. Featuring IK09 impact
resistance and IP45 protection against dust and
liquid ingress, the panel houses a 3.5-inch colour
display, wide-angled camera and has a
programmable block name feature, which means
there is no need for the name of each building to
be engraved.
149 hands-free versions of Urmet’s colour Miro
monitors were also installed in the apartments at
Victory Place.
Urmet’s 2Voice range comprises two nonpolarised
wires throughout the system for quick
installation and maintenance, while existing
wiring can be used in refurbishment projects.
Commenting on the installation, Lee Kjelstrup,
Project Engineer at Urmet UK, revealed Firemain
UK is a certified Urmet Pro Installer and each
engineer is trained and (re)certified on an annual
basis and provided with a complimentary Android
tablet with the 2Voice app loaded onto it. “The
2Voice app makes it easy to make changes to the
door entry system, simplifies installation and uses
Bluetooth to transfer data,” he said. “These
features helped to ensure the smooth installation
of this particular project.”
Colin Wilson, Director, at Firemain UK, added
“The installation on this contract of eleven blocks
was extremely straightforward with only 2 wires
connecting the entry panels and the apartment
monitors, allowing us to reuse the existing cabling
and save time on this part of the project.”
A Hikvision IP High Definition video
surveillance system including new 43-inch and
22-inch HD monitors for the control room, along
with new touchscreen network keyboards and
joysticks was implemented.
Control room operators monitor images from
a number of different cameras. These include an
initial 48 DarkfighterX network speed domes,
which provide colour HD images in light levels as
low as 0.001 Lux and offer 25x zoom capabilities
and Deep Learning-powered target classification
for automatic tracking and perimeter protection.
These are complemented by 29 Darkfighter 2
megapixel motorised varifocal lens cameras, 21
ultra-low light smart bullet cameras, and six low
light smart cameras.
Images are recorded to Hikvision 16-channel
Turbo HD digital video recorders which support
analogue, HD-TVI, and IP cameras, H.264,
H.264+ and dual-stream compression, and can
output at up to 4K resolution.
“The Gardens now have a full HD system
which can be expanded with additional cameras
in the future,” Tim Dyer says. “It allows them to
take advantage of technology advances and
newly developed functionality on any cameras or
devices they add to the system in future.”
The new system has revolutionised Kew’s
video picture quality and functionality,
enhancing security across the 330-acre site.
Large hospital has site-wide
fire system installed
Static Systems has successfully completed a sitewide
fire alarm upgrade and new system
installation at Wexham Park Hospital.
Wexham Park Hospital is a large NHS hospital
situated near Slough in Berkshire. The 588-bed
hospital is one of three managed by Frimley
Health NHS Foundation Trust. As well as the main
hospital building, the site has a large Post
Graduate building, ambulance station, staff
accommodation and a new 9,300sq metre, fourstorey
Emergency Assessment Centre (EAC). The
EAC, which is currently under construction and
scheduled for completion by the end of 2018, will
bring the hospital’s emergency department,
ambulatory care and assessment units together
under one roof.
In February 2018, Static Systems Group was
awarded the contract to undertake a phased
upgrade of the Hospital’s existing site-wide fire
alarm in order to bring the system up to a category
L1 open protocol system.
In addition to the upgrade, Static Systems was
also tasked with installing fire alarm systems in
No false alarms for Northern
Ireland Housing Association
The Grove Community Housing Association in
Northern Ireland has replaced its existing smoke
alarms with Aico’s Multi-Sensors and Ei164e
Heat Alarms in more than 80% of its properties.
Established in 1977, Grove Community
Housing Association manages 218 properties in
North Belfast, which are a
mixture of new builds and
renovated existing dwellings.
With the smoke alarms in
these properties coming to
the end of their ten year life,
Grove looked in to the
market for mains powered
alarms that could reduce
false alarms.
Denis Bleakley, Grove
Community Housing
Association General
the new EAC and Radiology & X-ray Department.
All upgrade work had to be undertaken in a live,
fully occupied hospital environment and, at the
time of installing the new systems, the Emergency
Department and Radiology & X-ray Department
were construction zones.
Before the upgrade project commenced, Static
Systems was invited to take part in the early
design and development discussions to explore
options and identify how best to meet the Trust’s
requirements. The company surveyed the whole
site before producing the design in conjunction
with the Capital Projects team and the Trust’s Fire
Safety Officer.
Static Systems provided a site-based project
management team and managed the entire design,
supply, installation, testing and commissioning of
its Evo2 fire alarm panels and Apollo fire detection.
In total, 15 wards were upgraded, with 14 fire alarm
panels and 14 fire alarm repeater panels installed.
Greg Forsythe, Project Manager at Static
Systems, comments: “This project required us to
work across a host of different live settings, from
Intensive Care, Sterile Services and Radiology, to
the mortuary and canteen. Our primary focus was
delivering a seamless installation with minimal
disruption to the everyday workings of the clinical
teams. As such, we introduced a robust process for
communicating information about the works to all
relevant parties through the Capital Projects team,
providing five working days’ notice of our intent to
work in each area of the hospital.
“As Principal Contractor, it’s essential for us to
have an on-site project management team which,
on this project consisted of a Project Manager, a
Commissioning Engineer and an Installing
Supervisor, as well as additional office based
project support.”
Work is still underway with further extensions
to the system planned for later this year. By the
end of the eight month phased project Static
Systems will have completed a full fire alarm
system replacement.
Manager, explains: “We wanted 10-year life
rechargeable batteries so neither tenants nor the
Association would be troubled by battery
replacement. Being rechargeable also means
that if for some reason the electricity supply is
off for an extended period, the batteries still do
not need to be replaced and the alarms function
safely. We liked the Multi-Sensor technology to
reduce false alarms for us and our tenants,
which we found was backed up by BRE [Building
Research Establishment] research.”
The Multi-Sensor fire alarms contain two
sensor types, optical and heat, to constantly
monitor smoke and heat levels, sending and
receiving information via its intelligent detection
software, for fast response and reduced false
alarms; the latter is enhanced through a dust
compensation feature.
Since the new Aico alarms have been
installed, Denis states that he has not had any
false alarms reported.
Protecting a West London
cultural landmark
In 2015 Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery Trust
launched a restoration project to peel back years
of modifications to the Grade I listed, Pitzhanger
Manor and Gallery. The main aim was to reveal
and reinstate some of the original key features,
which had been destroyed over the years.
IDS were commissioned to supply, install and
commission the CCTV systems for the Manor
House, Gallery and Garden Room. They were
tasked with securing the perimeter of the
buildings, as well as the internal communal and
circulation areas. CCTV cameras were deployed
throughout alongside internal and guest Wi-Fi
infrastructure and data infrastructure points.
Tas Kyriacou, IDS Head of Business
Development, says: “We inherited this project
from another contractor, who had started to install
a few products. These were different from the
brands we usually work with, but we found a way
to rework their scheme, staying spec compliant,
installing the required equipment and integrating
some trusted brands alongside the other brands.”
Robert Weston, Senior Project Manager,
Working Environments, explains, “Pitzhanger
Manor and Gallery was a job I inherited, we picked
up part way through and it is never easy picking
up work from someone else. Electrically, we were
on the back foot in this project due to poor build
work and we were constantly playing catch up, so
everything had to be turned around very quickly.
IDS jumped straight in, identifying what had been
installed, rectifying errors- of which there were a
few and worked out which direction we had to
take next.
“Due to the architectural structure of
Pitzhanger Manor, this was not a straightforward
security install. The team at IDS had to deliver a
scheme which would provide the full coverage
needed while being unobtrusive and with minimal
structural alterations.”
