INTERVIEW Real world technology This month we talk to Gordon Morrison of Johnson Controls about his first year in security and how to manage big brands ordon Morrison is GB Sales Director for Gthe Tyco access control and video brands. He is responsible for developing and driving the company’s sales strategy in order to maximise support for consultants, system designers, installers and system integrators who recommend the installation of CEM, Kantech, Software House access control and American Dynamics, Exacq and Illustra video surveillance solutions to their clients. Prior to joining the company, Gordon had performed a number of senior management roles at GE where he worked for over 16 years. PSI caught up with him a year on from him taking up the role at Tyco, the security products division of Johnson Controls. You've been with the company for twelve months, how has it been? For me it has been a learning year as I have not previously worked within the electronic security sector. I'm used to running global teams from a service or commercial perspective, but I'm an engineer at heart, even if I do hide it very well these days! It has been very interesting to look at existing and emerging technologies, how they can be used, and then determining how we can help grow the marketplace. The year has been good, although I guess everybody always looks to be better and to r generate more business. The good thing is that I am managing a team who really know the industry. So in respect of industry expertise, while I accept I didn't bring that with me, I have utilised my leadership skills to determine what we are doing and what we can optimise to achieve success. The way we are now structured means we are ready to go to the market and highlight the products and solutions we have, to help us grow even more in our next financial year. What has been the impact of the Johnson Controls acquisition? We have now got a big corporation behind us and so while we are out in the marketplace offering access and video, we can now claim to be able to deliver more of a 'total' solution, which resonates well with the development of intelligent buildings going forward. We have in fact deployed this approach at our offices in Cork, where colleagues and visitors holding access cards do not need to press a button in the elevator because it knows who they are and will take them to the relevant floor. If you have a corporation like Johnson Controls with its comprehensive range of products and solutions, it means you can talk to one company to get a complete solution. I think that this approach will make it even better going forward. How do you manage the many brands you have? Technology choice is always determined by what the end-user client wishes to achieve. Not everybody is looking for the same result and so we don’t try to shoehorn any of our products. For example, some end-users just want an access control system to simply restrict who has access to sensitive areas of a building, while others want to achieve much more. They may wish to know if a meeting room is available within the building and have the facility to book it.
