The Model
Recognizing Culturally Responsive and Innovative Classroom Teachers
Name: Analese Cravens & Molly Hollister
School: Engelhard Elementary School
As Reading Recovery teachers,
we have a wealth of best
practice knowledge regarding
early literacy. We realized that by not
sharing our knowledge we were
doing a disservice to the kids we
served directly, the first grade kids
we didn’t get to work with, and their
teachers.
About a year ago, our school was
trying to figure out a way to help first
graders combat the summer reading
loss and help support first grade
teachers so they could not only catch
the students up but also teach their
core content. We knew we needed to
think “out of the box”.
The combination of the two led us to
create the First Grade Reading Lab.
