Three things to know
about the LWE-LWC
The Lincoln-Way
Armbrecht followed
2. The team showed
promise this
season
The Griffins
defeated Chicago
Christian
and Bradley-
Bourbonnais prior
to the meet.
3. All of the players
contributed
Junior Anthony Bria
brought a 357 (176,
Frankfort Falcons win Super Bowl championships
The Frankfort Falcons
varsity and junior varsity
teams capped successful
2018 seasons by clinching
River Valley Super Bowl
championships Nov. 11 at
the ATI Field at Joliet Memorial
Stadium.
The No. 2-seeded varsity
team defeated the No. 1
Morris Warriors 20-6 in the
championship game, while
the No. 1-ranked junior
varsity team secured a 25-6
title victory over the No. 3
Frankfort Square Wildcats.
Falcons varsity head coach
Matthew Straight attributed
the team’s success this season
to his players’ sense of
brotherhood and their ability
to focus on “the momentum
of the season itself.”
“What was great was that
we had some returning varsity
players, as well as a JV
team that was in the Super
Bowl last year that was able
to contribute,” he said.
After finishing out the
regular season with a 7-1 record,
the varsity team entered
the first round of the playoffs
with a bye and went on
to shut out the Tinley Park
Bulldogs 28-0 on Oct. 28. In
the Nov. 4 semifinal game the
team clinched a second postseason
shutout, defeating the
Homer Stallions 31-0.
10 members of the Falcons
varsity team — eighth-graders
Bradley Abbott, John
Hackett, Ethan Jedlowski,
Matt Kingsbury, James
Kwiecinski, Charlie Nevinger,
Peter Olaleye, Jake
Scianna, Zach Welker and
Ari Zaeske — were named
to the All-River Valley youth
football team, which recognizes
outstanding varsity
players in the youth league.
The junior varsity team’s
Super Bowl championship
was a fitting finish to the
team’s 11-0 season. Under
the coaching of Tom Poynton,
the team shut out the
Manhattan Patriots 26-0
in the Oct. 27 quarterfinal
game before defeating the
New Lenox Jr. Knights 13-0
in the semifinal.
Greg Ristich, the Falcons’
lightweight coach, said the
junior varsity team’s season
also included a Wednesday
Night League championship.
Straight and the rest of the
varsity coaches — Dave Stolarek,
Mike Wesley, Randy
Scianna, Jim Curtin and Tom
Wills — are hanging up their
boots, but the junior varsity
team’s coaching staff will
take over the varsity team
next year, Straight said.
He added he anticipated
the majority of the players
would continue their football
careers at Lincoln-Way East
High School, which has recently
seen two stellar backto-back
seasons: an IHSA
Class 8A championship in
2017 and a 2018 postseason
run culminating in a 24-16
loss to Loyola in the Nov. 17
state semifinal game.
“We expect great things
from them at the freshman
level next year,” Straight said.
“[Lincoln-Way East football
Coach Rob Zvonar] has been
a big part of the organization
and his kids are coming up
through the Falcons as well.”
“There are a lot of good teams in this area, and we’re trying
to build up our program so that we can be in that conversation
too.”
