The crackle of hot oil can be heard on Tuesday evenings during the summer at Waaswaaganing Indian Bowl pow wows<br />
in Lac du Flambeau. Every week, lifelong Lac du Flambeau resident Mary Mitchell cooks 200 servings of traditional<br />
fry bread, an inexpensive snack devoured by the audience and the dancers alike. Mitchell learned the recipe from her<br />
aunt four decades ago, and she shapes and cooks the bread the traditional way—by hand. It’s best eaten hot, with<br />
a smear of honey butter.<br />
