LAKES & WATERWAYS They have been named, counted and mapped. There’s Trout Lake, Lynx Lake, Lone Tree Lake, and more than 1,300 other Northwoods lakes spilling across the wild landscape of Vilas County, along with scores of small lakes and ponds that have yet to be named. You can see details on our largest lakes on pages 11-14, including GPS coordinates, what you’ll find there, public access information, and the size and depth of each lake. There are some things that can’t be charted or graphed, like what it’s like to view the Milky Way from the end of a dock or what it’s like to sit with someone special on the shore and watch the sun dip below the trees. Find your own moment—and your new favorite lake in Vilas County. WONDERFUL WATERS Vilas County lakes have been luring people to the Northwoods for more than a century. These waterways are still as beautiful and unspoiled as they were during the days of the steam trains. If you’re looking for a paddling adventure, you’ve found the perfect place. Launch your canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard on one of our established routes or chart your own course. You’ll find hidden ponds and quiet waters as well as routes that can take days to explore. Outfitters on the Wisconsin River help visitors enjoy a day tubing along wild shores—tubers frequently spot bald eagles. On warm summer days, there’s nothing more refreshing than a swim in a Northwoods lake. Dive into the cool, clear waters of a Vilas County lake or soak up the sun in the soft sand of a secluded, postcard-perfect beach. There are plenty of public beaches, and many of our resorts and lodging properties have beaches for their guests. 8 LAKES & WATERWAYS Throughout the year, Vilas County’s rich fishing waters attract anglers. Here, you’ll find everything from crappie, yellow perch and bluegill to hard-fighting walleye, pike and musky. Vilas County lakes also hold some of the biggest, most beautiful smallmouth bass in the state. When temperatures drop, grab your auger to experience some of the best ice fishing in the Northwoods. Boaters will find endless waters to explore, including expansive lakes ideal for a day cruise and lakes that are ideal for waterskiing and tubing. LAKE CHAINS With more than 1,300 lakes, Vilas County offers endless places to launch a boat. We have lakes of all sizes, from picturesque ponds to lakes big enough for an extended cruise. And here’s the best news: you don’t have to choose. Thanks to our lake chains, you can explore a few lakes— or more than a dozen—in a single outing. Watery Wonders EAGLE RIVER CHAIN One of the most well-known chains in the Northwoods is the 1 Eagle River Chain of Lakes. In fact, it’s the largest freshwater chain of lakes in the world. It connects with the Three Lakes Chain to the south, so boaters have a total of 28 lakes and 174 miles of shoreline to explore. The Eagle River portion of the chain includes ten lakes covering 3,600 acres, including small waters like 31-acre Lynx Lake and expansive lakes like the nearly 1,000-acre Catfish Lake. CISCO CHAIN In far northern Vilas County, the Cisco Chain takes boaters into Michigan waters. With 15 lakes and 270 miles of shoreline, it’s a chain of substantial size. Big Lake, West Bay and Mamie Lake extend into Vilas County and connect with lakes like Cisco and Thousand Island Lakes to the north. LAC DU FLAMBEAU CHAIN This spring-fed 10-lake chain is known for its abundant fish and clear water. It’s anchored by Fence Lake, a clear, 3,483- acre lake containing musky, panfish, smallmouth bass, northern pike and walleye. There are many places to get on the water, and one of the chain’s lakes, Long Interlaken, borders downtown Lac du Flambeau. Grab a seat next to the lake and prepare to be thrilled! Vilas County communities hold free water ski shows throughout the summer. You’ll find shows in Sayner-Star Lake, Conover, Manitowish Waters and the Minocqua area. For more information, visit vilas.org/events. MANITOWISH WATERS CHAIN In Manitowish Waters, you’ll find a 6 10-lake chain with some great fishing and an interesting history. The chain includes Rest Lake, Stone Lake, Fawn Lake, Clear Lake, Little Star Lake, Island Lake, Alder Lake, Spider Lake, Wild Rice Lake and Manitowish Lake. The lake that helped the chain gain fame is Little Star Lake, home to Little Bohemia Lodge, site of a 1934 shootout between John Dillinger and the FBI.
