IMPACT
by sarah cnossen
Modesty can be a rather
touchy subject among
young ladies these days.
The world teaches you to
accept yourself for who
you are and what you look
like, and to then dress to
impress—to feel good. But
what does Scripture teach?
And why should we have
standards in regards to
the biblical
standard
modesty? There are two
valuable reasons as to why.
As a follower of Christ, we
are held to a Biblical standard
in that our appearance
should not draw attention to
ourselves, but should reflect
the Light of our Lord and
Savior. Imagine this: you are
an emissary of a great and
beloved king. If you are sent
by him to a distant kingdom
to represent your king
and country, would you be
dressed in rags and dirt? Or
in skimpy, revealing clothes
and cake-y make-up?
No!
You would dress in respectable
clothing befitting a
faithful servant of the great
king you serve. 1 Timothy
2:9-10 addresses not only a
woman’s outward appearance,
but also that of her
character.
However, in this particular
passage, Paul is NOT banning
the use of make-up,
jewelry, clothing, or hairstyle.
He is merely pointing
out that these things are not
meant to be the obsession
of your time and heart. A
woman’s appearance is only
a piece of who she is—not
the whole puzzle! With
that said, how does your
reflection speak as to Who
you serve? The Proverbs say
it plainly, “As in water face
reflects face, so the heart of
man reflects man.” (27:19)
Who you are on the inside
will reflect who you are on
“Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves
with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly,
not with braided hair and gold or pearls or
costly garments, but rather by means of good
works, as is proper for women making a claim
to godliness.”
