JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2019 OHBELOVEDONE.COM WHITEWASHED TOMBS
Let your adorning be the imperishable beauty of a
gentle and quiet spirit.
leaders of the law. They knew the
Old Testament inside and out. But
despite that, they were hypocrites
and didn’t practice what they
preached. They were constantly
reviling Jesus and despising Him.
Jesus compared them to whitewashed
tombs, which looked
beautiful and white on the outside,
but inside, their hearts were
‘filled with dead people’s bones
and all uncleanness’: black with
sin and hypocrisy.”
“I think I see what you’re getting
at,” Addie said.
Ellen smiled. “If we’re Christians,
Christ will have taken our
sins upon Himself when He died
on the cross. But we still have to
grow, and throughout our whole
Christian life, sometimes it’s very
easy to get caught up in things of
the world, such as appearance.
But God says to us ladies in 1
Peter 3, ‘Do not let your adorning
be external—the braiding of
hair and the putting on of gold
jewelry, or the clothing you
wear— but let your adorning be
the hidden person of the heart
with the imperishable beauty of a
gentle and quiet spirit, which in
God’s sight is very precious.’
appearance, but inside our heart
is a mess, we become like those
whitewashed tombs the Pharisees
were compared to. God wants us
to be beautiful in character.”
“How on earth do I do that?”
“Well, you can’t do it on your
own, that’s for sure. Pray for
God to work in your heart. I
encourage you to look at Galatians
5:23, which lists all of the
fruits of the Spirit. Find one you
struggle with, such as patience.
Then focus on that one to work
on, keeping in the Word of God to
encourage, strengthen, and help
you.”
“Will you pray for me? I have
a feeling this is not going to be
easy.”
Ellen gave Addie a hug. “Of
course. Although that’s not to say
I don’t still struggle with it. Why
don’t we work on it together?”
You see, Addie, what is most
precious and beautiful in God’s
sight is the beauty of your heart,
which comes from Christ. If we
focus too much on the outside
