The CBC Cadets football team achieved
a first for the program this season.
The Cadets won their second consecutive
Class 6 state championship with a
45-21 win over the Rockhurst Hawklets at
Faurot Field in Columbia. It was the first
time CBC has won football titles in backto-back
years and its third state title in the
last five seasons. The first came in 2014.
“It’s very special to win back-to-back
championships,” CBC coach Scott Pingel
said. “We had a chance one other time and
didn’t get it done. Getting to the finals is
always a big accomplishment. It’s not
something I take for granted.”
CBC finished 12-1.
“Every day that goes by, it’s a great feeling,”
Pingel said. “Any time you get to
work with a great group of kids that have
played together so long and get to keep
practicing and spend more time with them,
it’s just a lot of fun.”
The team featured 31 seniors, most of
whom started in their sophomore season.
“This was probably the first time we had
so many guys start as sophomores and just
keep playing for us,” Pingel said. “It’s been
a cool ride to be with them.”
CBC had defeated Rockhurst 45-7
during the regular season in October.
The two teams have history. CBC
defeated the Hawklets 31-24 in the 2014
title game. Because of the big win, many
considered CBC a heavy favorite to win
the title and Pingel said, “They had a mission
to win [state] again.”
He didn’t have to remind them of much
before the game. The veteran group knew
what needed to be done.
“I just talked about seniors leaving a
legacy. Leave your mark,” Pingel said.
“Nobody at CBC had ever done this – winning
two in a row.”
The Cadets went out and took care of
business. Senior running back Bryan Bradford
scored on a 69-yard run in the second
play of the game.
“That was an inside zone play,” Pingel
said. “The lead blocker went through his
guy and opened a big hole. Bryan outran
everybody. It was pretty sweet.”
Bradford ended the game with 230 yards
and two touchdowns on 22 carries. He also
scored from 1 yard out early in the fourth
quarter. He finished his season tied for the
area lead in touchdowns with 39 and ended
up third in rushing yards with 2,090.
Scoring so quickly helped CBC set the
tone of the game.
The Cadets put up 21 points in the first
quarter. Rockhurst had a long scoring

drive. A pick-six late in the second quarter
gave the Hawklets a touchdown that made
it 21-14 at halftime. Cooper Krezek intercepted
a pass and ran 65 yards for a score
with 33 seconds left in the half.
CBC scored early in the third quarter.
Rockhurst controlled the ball and scored
in the fourth quarter to make it 28-21. The
Cadets did not blink. CBC scored 17 unanswered
points to take control and go on to
win the game.
“We did what we had been doing all
year,” Pingel said. “We scored and forced
a turnover and scored. All three phases
clicked at a high pace for us there in the
fourth quarter.”
Senior quarterback Brett Gabbert threw
for 311 yards and four touchdowns in the
victory. “I think his numbers speak for
themselves,” Pingel said. “He did a great
job leading us. He orchestrated our offense
perfectly.
“[Michael] Anderson had a heck of a
game for us. He had six tackles for a loss
and two sacks. Our whole defensive line
was playing lights out.”
The best part for Pingel was seeing how
his squad reacted to the win. “It was a great
celebration. They were there with their
classmates who were at the game. It was
an experience you can’t forget,” he said.
