TALKING ED
On 29th October, 2018 the Chancellor of the
Exchequer, Philip Hammond presented his
Autumn Budget. The tax on beer, cider and spirits
will be frozen next year but duty on wine will rise
with inflation. The chancellor also announced
rate relief for businesses with a rateable value
less than £51,000, which will see rates cut by a
third for 90% of small businesses, including pubs.
While this change will see annual savings of up
to £8,000 for some pubs, CAMRA is disappointed
pub-specific rate relief has been scrapped, as
those with a rateable value more than £51,000
will lose out.
On 30th October, 2018 CAMRA launched its
three-point plan to save the great British pub on
its Mass Lobby Day. Hundreds of CAMRA members
(including me) descended on Westminster after
the Budget to send a message to MPs about the
threats facing pubs. The day was a great success.
Finally, Canny Bevvy, the branch and myself
wish you all a Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Beer.
Cheers
BREWERY VISIT
NORTHERN ALCHEMY BREWERY
Northern Alchemy brewery was created by
2 brothers-in-law, Andy Aitchison and Carl
Kennedy, in a 30-foot ship container at the
side of the Cumberland Arms in Byker (see
page 9).
This year the brewery relocated to the
other side of the Byker Bridge (still on the
Byker side) to a site exponentially bigger,
The Old Coal Yard.
Beers from Northern Alchemy aren’t fined
or filtered and only use natural ingredients.
Their beers are suitable for vegetarians
and vegans, as they don’t use any animal
products. So, often drinkers will find that
their beers have a natural haze. Beers are
packaged in cask, keg and bottle formats.
They consider themselves to be part of the
‘craft beer’ sector of the brewing world.
Their beers generally are on the stronger
‘side of the fence’ – some best only drank in
small volumes. However, their session pales
are full of flavour and great beers when a
thirst needs quenching.
The Cumberland Arms is the best place to
find the Northern Alchemy portfolio of beers,
in many ways, it is the brewery tap.
Northern Alchemy have great plans for the
future, brewing capacity is now much bigger
and they have space to move in. The Old
Coal Yard will have monthly open-days/
events, obviously there will be a bar selling
their beer, also on the bill will be bands/djs
and pop-up street food. The Coal Yard is a
great space in an urban/industrial setting,
it is anticipated that it will be used for a
number of uses and become a key part of
the vibrant creative sector in the Ouseburn.
PLATFORM 2, Station Terrace, Tynemouth
This new micropub opened the last weekend in August.
It was formerly a cafe/bar named ‘Porters Coffee House’.
The owner, Michael Bowman had owned the cafe
since 1994. It was originally the ladies waiting room on
Tynemouth Station. He had always wanted to open his
own micropub since visiting America 6 years ago. So
when the lease came up for renewal - after talking to his
family - he decided to convert the cafe into a micropub.
Mick removed the plaster off the walls to reveal the
original brickwork. The wooden counter was raised to
make the bar. The kitchen was turned into the cellar.
He kept the original wooden coffee shop tables.
He added raised tables, new chairs and stools. The
suspended lighting was also left over from the cafe.
The ‘wine rack’ - on the wall behind the bar - is made
from an old table which was used for storage. A large
picture of George Washington blowing bubble gum
was bought from a London artist. On another wall is
a reproduction ostrich head (don’t ask). There is also
a free vintage jukebox. The railway themed micropub
has railway memorabilia adorning the walls. A real fire
is in the bar. The original staff toilet was converted into
the men’s toilet and the one original toilet was changed
into the women’s toilet. A framed photograph of a very
young Bob Dylan hangs in the men’s toilet.
There are 4 handpulls serving rotating cask ales,
usually from local micro breweries. There are 6 craft
keg taps, 2 of which are for cider and lager. Three taps
are for rotating craft keg beers from local and national
micro breweries. Almasty’s ‘Session Ale’ is always
available. Pork pies and traditional bar snacks are also
available. Traditional pub games are provided. Every
other Wednesday Mick has started a live music night,
featuring 3 different artists.
This is a very dog friendly micropub (ask Ivy, Mick’s
Golden Retriever) which gives free ‘Doggy Snacks’
and water. Children are also welcome up until 7.00pm.
THE INKSPOT, 57 Front Street, Newbiggin by the Sea
Simon Sleightholm and Angie Main opened at the end
of September, in what was formerly a tattoo parlour,
hence the micropub’s name. Both live in Newbiggin
and both have full time jobs. They both work in the
micropub, which is open on Friday, Saturday and
Sunday. It was a joint decision to open the micropub,
as they both love craft ales. Two ‘Lindr Soudek’ twin
tap dispensers from the Czech Republic stand behind
the bar. They plan to increase to 6 taps serving rotating
craft key-keg beers from local and national micro
breweries. There is also a selection of bottled beers
from local micro breweries. Traditional pub snacks
are sold.
The one room bar has a wooden bar counter. One
wall is covered in pages from paperback books.
Various framed prints and artwork hang on the walls.
This is due to Simon and Angie’s shared interest in
literature and art. There is a real wood burning fire.
The micropub’s logo is etched on both windows. A
selection of bottled beers are always on the bar for
free tasting. ‘FemAle’ - an all women tasting evening
- was held on 29th November. Anna from Cullercoats
Brewery was running the event. All the tickets had
sold out within an hour. Women only socials are
planned for the future.
This is another very dog friendly micropub. Simon
and Angie have two rescue dogs, George (a Jack
Russell) and Amos (a Staffordshire Bull Terrier). Any
customer can take a photograph of their dogs and pin
it up in the bar. A ‘Doggy Menu’ of locally made ‘Doggy
Treats’ is available to buy. Free ‘Doggy Treats’ and
water are also available. This micropub supports two
charities. A RNLI collection box is on the bar and they
sponsor YMCA Rooms, which provides a bed for the
night to homeless people.
STAR AND SHADOW CINEMA, Warwick Street, Heaton
This cinema, live music gigs, events and exhibition
venue opened in the former SCS Furniture Store in
May 2018, after moving from its former location
on Stepney Bank in Ouseburn. It is run by over 40
volunteers. The huge cinema room has leather sofas
as the front row seating as well as a vintage organ.
The bar serves craft keg beers from 4 tap dispensers
from local micro breweries. There is also a cafe which
serves vegan, vegetarian and locally sourced food.
JOHN BULL INN, 12 Howick Street, Alnwick
Owner/landlord Gus Odlin has decided to retire.
Hadrian Border Brewery have taken on the lease
of the freehold pub. Gus will continue to reside in
accommodation above the premises. This CAMRA
multi-award winning pub in 2014 won the Regional
Pub of the Year, Overall Northumberland Pub of the
Year and North Northumberland Cider Pub of the Year.
We wish Gus a long and happy retirement (see page 7).
HADRIAN BORDER BREWERY, have taken on the lease
have the Station East in Gateshead (see page 6).
MORDUE BREWERY, is to open its first pub on 7th
James Place Street, Byker
I have been checking the beer at the
Cumberland Arms for knocking on towards
40 years. When I first arrived in Newcastle at
the start of the 1980s, the Cumberland was
one of the few pubs without a blue star on its
exterior and Best Scotch and Exhibition on
the bar.
It is a traditional 2 roomed pub, that
is considered by many to be the centre
of traditional folk music in Tyneside and
Northumberland. When Sting presented a
documentary on folk music, the Cumberland
took centre stage. The Cumberland has
appeared many times on television due to its
profile for traditional music sessions. It has also
appeared many times in books on Great British
pubs, because it is a great pub.
The informal rules for the Cumberland are
that music takes place in the room on the right
as you enter, the room on the left is for drinking
and conversation. The only exception to the
rule is that the Kingsmen Rappers regularly
dance in the left hand room. Tourists and
visitors are thrilled by the Kingsmen, many
regulars would prefer them to adhere
to tradition and dance outside.
The upstairs venue has the old bar from the
Haymarket, a pub destroyed by Newcastle
University to make a car park. The venue is
used for all sorts of entertainment; bands,
comedy, dances and occasional talks.
Cider has always been a major part of the
drinks offer at the Cumberland, the pub always
has a range of ciders. On the beer front, there
are numerous hand pumps and craft keg fonts.
The pub is ‘related’ to Northern Alchemy who
brew Styrian Bobek Cascade & Lemongrass
Pale exclusively for the Cumberland. At 3.9%
with a lovely balanced bitterness, it is my beer
of choice in the Cumberland.
Regular beer festivals are held throughout
the year and during the summer there is a
programme of entertainment held outside
the pub.
The Cumberland Arms is a great example of
a traditional pub which has kept its roots intact
and has a contemporary appeal, whether that
be the drinks offer or entertainment.
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Five went down to Westminster
and four went to see their
MP, for the CAMRA Mass
Lobby of Parliament on 30th
October, 2018 to lobby their
MP on business rates and the
ineffectiveness of the Pubs Code
and its adjudicator. Members
managed to see Mary Glindon
(Labour, North Tyneside), Liz
Twist (Labour, Blaydon), Guy
Opperman (Conservative,
Hexham), Catherine McKinnell
(Labour, Newcastle North). Chi
Onwurah (Labour, Newcastle
Central) was asked by two
members for an appointment
but was unavailable on the
day, neither was her assistant.
However, all five MPs have in the
past to varying degrees supported
CAMRA’s causes and met us in
their constituencies. We were
unable to ask to see the other six
MPs in our branch area. However,
no other branch sent more
members to the national lobby
than us! Well done members!
At the end of the day I had a
brief conversation with CAMRA’s
national chairman Jackie Parker,
inviting her to Newcastle. She
also said I was not the first to
mention that we wanted more
communication from the centre.
For a little while now we have
published branch, committee
and festival planning meeting
minutes on the Canny Bevvy
website, so any CAMRA member
can see them via the usual
CAMRA members login. Cider
has become another focus of our
activities. In Elspeth Winthorpe
and Michael Foreman we now
have two cider branch officers.
Another area the committee
has discussed is the production
of (online) pub guides and pub
walks. Other CAMRA branches
have already done so. Please get
in touch if you want to help.
I can’t sign off without making
reference to the Friends of Ye Olde
Cross in Ryton www.yeoldecross.
co.uk who gave a presentation
at the branch meeting on the 5th
of November 2018, in the Bridge
Hotel. Enterprise Inns have been
unable to get a tenant who can
make a decent living from the
pub. The Friends of Ye Olde
Cross are planning to buy the
pub and run it for the benefit of
the community. You can help by
buying shares if you so wish (see
website for details).
Hope to see as many as possible
of you at a future branch event.
POTY (Pub Of The Year) and COTY (Club Of The Year) Competitions
The purpose of the competition is to highlight
the excellence of our pubs and clubs at branch,
regional, super-regional (consisting of four
regions each) and national level.
QUALITY OF REAL ALE/CIDER/PERRY
CAMRA nationally is looking for a pub that also
sells excellent cider and perry, not just real ale.
STYLE, DÉCOR, FURNISHING AND CLEANLINESS
This means looking for clean glasses, hygienic
toilets (with hot water!). Does the pub feel
comfortable, pleasant and safe?
SERVICE, WELCOME AND OFFERING
Service should be welcoming, friendly, polite
and also prompt whenever possible. If the
pub is busy, a friendly acknowledgement of
your presence is desirable. Whether you visit
for the first time or are a regular, it should not
make a difference to the welcome you get. A
pub that serves food should not make you feel
unwelcome if all you want is a drink. Wifi is
considered a plus.
COMMUNITY FOCUS AND ATMOSPHERE
Are there regulars? Friendly atmosphere?
Support for local activities? (Check
noticeboards). Is there a friendly atmosphere?
ALIGNMENT WITH CAMRA PRINCIPLES
Are prices and opening hours clearly displayed?
You should get a full measure or a top up
without asking. Does the pub use oversized
glasses? No inappropriate noisy electronic
amusement machines. It should be noted that
it is better for a pub to sell a small range to
maintain quality, if that is what suits their trade.
OVERALL IMPRESSION
Did you enjoy your visit to the pub? Did you feel that
you received reasonable value for money (this is NOT
about CAMRA discounts). Would you come again?
There is a separate competition for the
Cider Pub of the Year (Cider POTY). While this
magazine publishes a long list of pubs in the
branch area that sell cider it may sometimes be
difficult for member and non-members to know
about the availability of good real cider and
perry. Our branch cider officers will suggest a
shortlist of cider pubs to explore and judge.
As in previous years there will be separate
winners for Tyneside and Northumberland, both
going forward to the regional selection in the
WE ALL DRINK (REAL ALE) TOGETHER
It is a wonderful thing to greet you as the
new Young Members Contact after Hattie
Rowling became the branch secretary.
It’s very promising that our branch now
has quite a few young members on the
committee – Peter Marquis, Membership
Secretary and Elspeth Winthorpe, Cider/
Perry Officer - certainly hope that we can
bring new ideas and make the campaign
more engaging to younger people.
I am happy I discovered real ale in
my 20’s as there is such a variety of styles
and flavours which I hadn’t experienced
before dabbling with it. It started off with
one of my friends introducing me to it
then I learnt about the campaign at a
conference I attended which showed how
we campaign to keep pubs open and how
they along with breweries can grow and
thrive, this inspired me to join CAMRA.
I certainly didn’t expect to find a beer
that tasted like the leftover milk from a
bowl of coco pops, but there it was at
Sunderland Beer Festival a few months
back (Coco Pop by Hambleton Ales).
Sometimes people don’t go for the
real ale because they don’t know if they
will like it, you never know unless you give
it ago. It’s certainly not a drink exclusive to
those adorned with a beard and sandals.
Lots of places sell it through the area.
In Wetherspoon some are as little as
£1.90 a pint.
Speaking of Wetherspoon, if you are
a young person under 26 or a member of
a university real ale society, you can join
CAMRA for £19 (£17 by Direct Debit) or
if you have just snuck past the age of 26
(like myself) its £27 (£25 by Direct Debit)
and you get £20 worth of Wetherspoon
discount coupons off Real Ale & Cider.
For those of you who attend one of our
two great universities both of them have
real ale societies, so you may consider
joining them and I’m sure they have some
exciting trips and events planned.
Newcastle University has the Newcastle
University Real Ale and Cider Appreciation
Society as well as Europe’s first student
run microbrewery StuBrew, which
recently celebrated its fourth birthday as
well as collaborating with our CAMRA
branch to deliver ‘Core Curriculum’, their
latest cider. Northumbria University has
the Northumbria University Real Ale and
Cider Society.
Anyway, I hope I will see you soon.
Come along to one of our bus trips or
wanders, it’s basically a pub crawl around
real ale establishments getting a idea of
what pubs we should consider for Pub
of the Year (POTY), Club of the year
(COTY) and the Good Beer Guide.
(Check out the branch diary on page
4 for more information).
If you are already a member, great!
Look out for an email coming out about
our younger members December Wander.
If you are a member of another branch -
but at studying or working up here - drop
me an email and I’ll be sure to invite you!
Campaigning for real ale, pubs &
drinkers’ rights since 1971
MASS LOBBY DAY
On 30th October CAMRA
members from all around the
country went to parliament
to fight for a better future for
pubs, brewers and beer.
CAMRA has a three-point plan
to save the Great British Pub. We
are asking MPs to support the
following three campaigns:
1. Carry out an immediate
review of the Pubs Code, so
that the Market Rent Only
(MRO) Option becomes a
genuine choice for tenants in
England and Wales.
2. Support introducing a
preferential rate of duty for
draught beer.
3. Commit to reshaping the
business rates system to address
the unfair burden on pubs.
One of the main items
on the agenda was the Pubs
Code, CAMRA is calling on
the Government to undertake
an urgent review of the code.
This is because two years
into its operation, PubCos are
continuing to exploit gaps in the
legislation and operation of the
Pubs Code and are not abiding
by the spirit of the code. The
urgent review must be carried
out as soon as is practicably
possible and include a full
public consultation to allow
for the collection of evidence
of the workings of the code so
far from tied tenants and other
key stakeholders (including
groups representing tied tenants
and other industry experts).
Urgent changes are needed
to the Pubs Code Regulations
to allow delivery of the aims
of the code, including action
on confidentiality relating to
arbitration decisions, to allow
decisions to be published
so that tied tenants can see
principles being established
in decisions. Changes to time
limits contained in the code, to
allow tied tenants more time
to navigate the MRO process.
Changes to force PubCos to
negotiate MRO offers properly,
rather than providing an inflated
offer and refusing to negotiate
with the tied tenant on price.
Changes to prevent a PubCo
evicting a tied tenant in order
to prevent them securing a
MRO agreement.
Another item on the agenda
was Beer Duty and Business
Rates for pubs following the
29th October budget. Business
rates account for around 15p
per 4.5% ABV pint of beer and
Beer Duty (tax) accounts for
49p in every pint of 4.5% ABV
beer. Pubs currently pay 2.8%
of the Business Rates Bill but
only account for 0.5% of total
business turnover, which is
an overpayment of around £500
million by the sector each year.
A £1,000 Temporary
Business Rate Relief for pubs
was announced in the 2017
Spring Budget. In the 2017
Autumn Budget the Chancellor
announced that this would
be extended for another year.
The relief only applies to pubs
with a rateable value of below
£100,000, meaning that some of
the pubs that have experienced
the largest increases in business
rates can’t benefit. This situation
is unfair and wholesale reform is
needed to address the pub sector
overpayment to stem the rising
tide of pub closures. A YouGov
poll found that 69% of those who
expressed an opinion believe
that pubs should receive tax relief
as they provide safe, managed
places for people to get together
and drink responsibly. Beer duty
in the UK is disproportionately
high in comparison to other
leading brewing nations in the
European Union. We pay nearly 40%
of all beer duty in the EU, but only
consume around 12% of the beer.
Time will tell if the Mass
Lobby Day made a difference
long term but more Members
of Parliament are aware of
these facts and engaging in
the conversation the better the
chances for a fairer deal for pubs
has to be.
SAVE OUR PUBS
As well as lobbying in
parliament the fight to save
pubs continues at branch level,
with numerous pubs involved
across the region.
The Friends of Ye Olde Cross
group from Ryton came to
talk at our November branch
meeting, to discuss a share offer
to raise, buy and save the pub.
Following this things seem to
be going well, by publication
the share offer will have closed
(successfully we hope).
You can find out more at
www.yeoldecross.co.uk.
A group are looking at saving
the Cooperage on Newcastle’s
quayside after it was added to
historic England’s Heritage at risk
register due to years of inactivity
on the site. A petition to the
owners has been signed by over
16,000 people. Branch members
have been involved with the group
and should more come from this
the branch are happy to lend full
support wherever possible.
The Railway Inn in Fourstones,
near Hexham has been closed
for 3 years. It was the only pub
in the village. Since its closure
like-minded people who want it
to re-open as a pub formed the
Fourstones Community Ventures.
Ideally they would prefer someone
to buy it and revive the pub.
The branch are looking at
possible ways to support and
promote rural pubs and whilst
plans are very much in the
infancy we are hopeful we
can put something together by
summer and should have more
to share with you in future issues.
Saving pubs takes a lot of
time, dedication, effort and
money, either as an individual
or as a group. However, they
can also be the beating heart
of a community and reward
those that can offer themselves
to this worthy endeavour. As
always if you are aware of any
pubs in danger in our branch
area, please let us know at
publicaffairs@cannybevvy.co.uk.
And finally I have a meeting
in the new year with the MP for
Wansbeck, Ian Lavery alongside
publican Julie Long who almost
found herself thrown out by
Trust Inns before taking on the
pub company and stopping the
Bank Top Hotel in Bedlington
being demolished and now runs
the pub freehold. We intend to
discuss the points on page 18,
in particular the Pubs Code and
hopefully seek a commitment
from another local MP to fix the
Pubs Code and give tied tenants
a fair deal.
BOOK REVIEWS BY MARTIN ELLIS
THE PUB MANIFESTO:
A Comedian Stands Up For Pubs
James Dowdeswell
Paperback £12.99
I must admit that I had never heard of
comedian James Dowdeswell, before
his book was brought to my attention.
However, I have heard of his comedy pals
Russell Howard and Jon Richardson who
endorse Dowdeswell’s book.
Dowdeswell grew-up in a Bristol pub
and has spent his life observing both sides
of the bar. His dad’s observations from a
lifetime in the pub trade are also shared
with the reader. The book covers real
ale and craft beer, pub toilets, pub dogs,
music and televisions in pubs and many
other issues.
The book is derived from material that
Dowdeswell has developed as a standup
comedian, at comedy clubs around
the world. One of the key aspects of his
routine relates to asking audiences what
makes the perfect pub. It is encouraging
to read that 21 out of 21 audiences placed
beer at the top of the list.
It is written in a light, amusing style and
is a quick read. More informative than I
expected, well researched and enjoyable.
THE CIDER INSIDER: The Essential
Guide 100 Craft Ciders to Drink Now
Susanna Forbes
Hardback £12.99
Cider is enjoying a resurgence! It is a bold
claim made by the publisher of The Cider
Insider in their press release sent with the
book. I think it is a fair claim, new cider makers
are blending heritage with modern methods,
new orchards are being planted. A few years
ago orchards were being scrubbed-up. The
image of cider has also changed, at one-time
discussion relating to cider centred around its
alcoholic strength, now discussion is centred
around flavour, aroma and other qualities.
The book is a world guide to cider,
highlighting 100 ciders from 35 regions. The
approach is similar to a traditional wine guide,
each region has a short introduction. The first
region, in pride of place, is England, Wales and
Ireland – Scotland doesn’t get a mention.
The book is a wealth of information written
by someone who is not only knowledgeable
but also passionate. It’s a great book for the
cider fanatic, however, as many of ciders
would be difficult to source, it’s not a ‘musthave’
for people who enjoy draught cider in a
local pub.
THE BEER KITCHEN: The Art &
Science of Cooking, & Pairing,
with Beer
Melissa Cole
Hardback £20.00
Over the years there have been a
number of beer cookery books, many
are recipe books using specific beers.
Cole’s approach is different, she starts by
exploring how beer is made and assessing
the taste aspects of beer. One of the best
parts of the book is Cole’s list of do’s and
don’ts and a couple of pages which is
categorised as ‘random advice’.
The book has over 70 recipes, some
are quick and easy, others are more
challenging. There are many vegetarian
and vegan options. Beautifully illustrated
throughout, with full-page photographs
of each recipe, or enthusiastic cooks, the
book has the ‘wow’ factor to whet the
appetite. With each recipe, there is a list
of possible beers to use and beers to drink
with the dish.
This is possibly the best beer cookery
book that I have seen. Cooks experienced
in using beer in recipes will love it, cooks
new to cooking with beer will also love it.
Practical and inspiring.
THE BEER BUCKET LIST: Over 150 Beer
Experiences from Around the World
Mark Dredge
Hardback £16.99
Mark Dredge has previously won the Beer and
Travel Writer of the Year by the British Guild of Beer
Writers. As the title clearly states, the book covers
150 beer experiences around the world, most of
those experiences are in the English speaking
world, but also includes places not normally on
the beer tourists bucket list, for example, North
Korea. I don’t think I am going to be checking
flight costs to North Korea, but I enjoyed reading
Dredge’s entertainment insight into North Korea’s
beer scene. The middle east is briefly covered, with
more respect, misses out the United Arab Emirates
– a destination probably best avoided.
The ‘United Kingdom and Ireland’ section could
be considered to be disproportionally large by some,
my view is that as a British reader it makes the book
more relevant. However, I do think London and the
south-east has been given too much dominance.
I was surprised to see in the list of ‘Notable British
Pub Bucket List Ticks’ of the 10 pubs highlighted,
The Marsden Grotto at South Shields is included. I
wonder when Dredge visited, perhaps on a beautiful
summers day, or perhaps not at all.
Whilst clearly Dredge has spent many hours in
drinking establishments, festivals and other events, he
has also spent a lot of time researching this book sat
at a desk. However, this doesn’t mean that I didn’t
find the book interesting, I did. Would I be happy if I
was given the book as Christmas present, I would.
