BREWERY VISIT NORTHERN ALCHEMY BREWERY Northern Alchemy brewery was created by 2 brothers-in-law, Andy Aitchison and Carl Kennedy, in a 30-foot ship container at the side of the Cumberland Arms in Byker (see page 9). This year the brewery relocated to the other side of the Byker Bridge (still on the Byker side) to a site exponentially bigger, The Old Coal Yard. Beers from Northern Alchemy aren’t fined or filtered and only use natural ingredients. Their beers are suitable for vegetarians and vegans, as they don’t use any animal products. So, often drinkers will find that their beers have a natural haze. Beers are packaged in cask, keg and bottle formats. They consider themselves to be part of the ‘craft beer’ sector of the brewing world. Their beers generally are on the stronger ‘side of the fence’ – some best only drank in small volumes. However, their session pales are full of flavour and great beers when a thirst needs quenching. The Cumberland Arms is the best place to find the Northern Alchemy portfolio of beers, in many ways, it is the brewery tap. Northern Alchemy have great plans for the future, brewing capacity is now much bigger and they have space to move in. The Old Coal Yard will have monthly open-days/ events, obviously there will be a bar selling their beer, also on the bill will be bands/djs and pop-up street food. The Coal Yard is a great space in an urban/industrial setting, it is anticipated that it will be used for a number of uses and become a key part of the vibrant creative sector in the Ouseburn.
