MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN Five went down to Westminster and four went to see their MP, for the CAMRA Mass Lobby of Parliament on 30th October, 2018 to lobby their MP on business rates and the ineffectiveness of the Pubs Code and its adjudicator. Members managed to see Mary Glindon (Labour, North Tyneside), Liz Twist (Labour, Blaydon), Guy Opperman (Conservative, Hexham), Catherine McKinnell (Labour, Newcastle North). Chi Onwurah (Labour, Newcastle Central) was asked by two members for an appointment but was unavailable on the day, neither was her assistant. However, all five MPs have in the past to varying degrees supported CAMRA’s causes and met us in their constituencies. We were unable to ask to see the other six MPs in our branch area. However, no other branch sent more members to the national lobby than us! Well done members! At the end of the day I had a brief conversation with CAMRA’s national chairman Jackie Parker, inviting her to Newcastle. She also said I was not the first to mention that we wanted more communication from the centre. For a little while now we have published branch, committee and festival planning meeting minutes on the Canny Bevvy <strong>web</strong>site, so any CAMRA member can see them via the usual CAMRA members login. Cider has become another focus of our activities. In Elspeth Winthorpe and Michael Foreman we now have two cider branch officers. Another area the committee has discussed is the production of (online) pub guides and pub walks. Other CAMRA branches have already done so. Please get in touch if you want to help. I can’t sign off without making reference to the Friends of Ye Olde Cross in Ryton www.yeoldecross. co.uk who gave a presentation at the branch meeting on the 5th of November 2018, in the Bridge Hotel. Enterprise Inns have been unable to get a tenant who can make a decent living from the pub. The Friends of Ye Olde Cross are planning to buy the pub and run it for the benefit of the community. You can help by buying shares if you so wish (see <strong>web</strong>site for details). Hope to see as many as possible of you at a future branch event.
