WE ALL DRINK (REAL ALE) TOGETHER It is a wonderful thing to greet you as the new Young Members Contact after Hattie Rowling became the branch secretary. It’s very promising that our branch now has quite a few young members on the committee – Peter Marquis, Membership Secretary and Elspeth Winthorpe, Cider/ Perry Officer - certainly hope that we can bring new ideas and make the campaign more engaging to younger people. I am happy I discovered real ale in my 20’s as there is such a variety of styles and flavours which I hadn’t experienced before dabbling with it. It started off with one of my friends introducing me to it then I learnt about the campaign at a conference I attended which showed how we campaign to keep pubs open and how they along with breweries can grow and thrive, this inspired me to join CAMRA. I certainly didn’t expect to find a beer that tasted like the leftover milk from a bowl of coco pops, but there it was at Sunderland Beer Festival a few months back (Coco Pop by Hambleton Ales). Sometimes people don’t go for the real ale because they don’t know if they will like it, you never know unless you give it ago. It’s certainly not a drink exclusive to those adorned with a beard and sandals. Lots of places sell it through the area. In Wetherspoon some are as little as £1.90 a pint. Speaking of Wetherspoon, if you are a young person under 26 or a member of a university real ale society, you can join CAMRA for £19 (£17 by Direct Debit) or if you have just snuck past the age of 26 (like myself) its £27 (£25 by Direct Debit) and you get £20 worth of Wetherspoon discount coupons off Real Ale & Cider. For those of you who attend one of our two great universities both of them have real ale societies, so you may consider joining them and I’m sure they have some exciting trips and events planned. Newcastle University has the Newcastle University Real Ale and Cider Appreciation Society as well as Europe’s first student run microbrewery StuBrew, which recently celebrated its fourth birthday as well as collaborating with our CAMRA branch to deliver ‘Core Curriculum’, their latest cider. Northumbria University has the Northumbria University Real Ale and Cider Society. Anyway, I hope I will see you soon. Come along to one of our bus trips or wanders, it’s basically a pub crawl around real ale establishments getting a idea of what pubs we should consider for Pub of the Year (POTY), Club of the year (COTY) and the Good Beer Guide. (Check out the branch diary on page 4 for more information). If you are already a member, great! Look out for an email coming out about our younger members December Wander.
