TALKING ED
On 29th October, 2018 the Chancellor of the
Exchequer, Philip Hammond presented his
Autumn Budget. The tax on beer, cider and spirits
will be frozen next year but duty on wine will rise
with inflation. The chancellor also announced
rate relief for businesses with a rateable value
less than £51,000, which will see rates cut by a
third for 90% of small businesses, including pubs.
While this change will see annual savings of up
to £8,000 for some pubs, CAMRA is disappointed
pub-specific rate relief has been scrapped, as
those with a rateable value more than £51,000
will lose out.
On 30th October, 2018 CAMRA launched its
three-point plan to save the great British pub on
its Mass Lobby Day. Hundreds of CAMRA members
(including me) descended on Westminster after
the Budget to send a message to MPs about the
threats facing pubs. The day was a great success.
Finally, Canny Bevvy, the branch and myself
wish you all a Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Beer.
Cheers
Adrian Gray,
Editor
