this festival and helps to make it such
a success year after year.
You’ll find 120 Beers, more than 50
ciders, and a gin bar, amongst many
other exciting developements for this
year. Truly #SomethingForEveryone
Have a look through the
programme for our many items of
entertainment.
Look out for our Battle of the
43rd Newcastle Beer & Cider Festival
Dear Festival Visitor,
as branch chair I welcome you to the
43rd Newcastle Beer and Cider Festival.
At the same time I’d like to tell you a
bit more about CAMRA, and the branch
behind the festival.
The first thing to say is that as as the
Tyneside & Northumberland branch
we cover an area larger than just
Newcastle upon Tyne. We cover the
area of the Metropolitan Borough of
Gateshead, plus everything north of the
Tyne including Northumberland right
up to the border with Scotland.
We don’t tell anyone what to drink,
but we are passionate about real ale,
cider and perry. Many people have
asked, what is the point of CAMRA?
You have won. Well, yes and no.
Have you noticed that almost every
time a major brewery takes over a
smaller one well-established beers are
suddenly under threat. CAMRA wants
to ensure the largest possible selection
and availability of real ale both in our
area, and across Britain.
You might have seen that some pubs
always seem to be advertising for new
tenants even when they are open. Large
pub companies (Pubco’s) try to get
the highest rent possible out of a pub,
BRANCH NEWS
and are happy to have a landlord who
offers a lesser quality of ales but pays
a higher rent. We as the consumers are
the losers, and the landlord may find
the pub is no longer viable and he or
she moves on.
Other pubs are not even so lucky
and have been clsoed. However, due
to CAMRA’s campaigning efforts the
planning laws in England no longer
make changing a pub into flats etc.
permissable without the consent of the
local council.
As a campaign group we work hard
to save pubs. Recently we gave our
support to the campagin to save Ye
Olde Cross in Ryton Village which has
now been bought by the community for
the community.
If you are interested in becoming
more active, seek me out during the
festival, or email:
chairman@cannybevvy.co.uk
We are particularly looking for active
members throughout Northumberland.
IMPORTANT ALLERGEN INFORMATION
We’ve worked hard to find “something for everyone” in our wide
range of beer styles and tastes. This may mean a presence of
allergens in some beers. You will find vegan and Gluten free beers
have heart-shaped markers on the pump clips to help you make
an informed decision. For full allergen information please ask
your server who can provide a list of allergen information for all
the beers, ciders, and perrys at the festival.

Expect one to two surprises among their set involving
songs that “you never knew were country”.
Playing a unique mix of good-time covers including
the best of Americana, rock’n’roll, country-rock, blues
mandolin, harmonica, vocals) and Malcolm McArdle
(bass guitar, harmonica, vocals) got together with
Graham Bowman (guitars) to start working on some music
with an American flavour. They were joined by Daren
Pearse (vocals and guitar), and Robert Pearson (drums).
‘THE BEST PORTER IN THE UK’ WBA 2018

43rd Newcastle Beer & Cider Festival
ENTERTAINMENT
Star and Shadow Rapper
Award-winning traditional sword dancers
who won the national Dancing England Rapper
Tournament in 2013 and 2014, and the weekend
before the festival will be competing in the 2019
tournament in Newcastle.
The rapper dance is a fast traditional English
dance whose origins lie in the mining villages
of Durham and Northumberland. It involves five
people connected by short, two-handled, flexible swords (called rappers)
forming a chain. Without breaking this chain the dancers weave in and out of
one another, twisting the swords to form locks and breastplates, sometimes
jumping or even somersaulting over the swords.
43rd Newcastle Beer & Cider Festival
On behalf of the Beer Ordering Team,
“welcome to the festival!”
Over the next two pages we’d like
to give you a brief summary of how
we ended up with the 120 beers that
we have at the festival, and should
give you just an idea of what we have
available.
We have a great selectiiom of local
breweries in our Battle of the Beers
competition as well as some beers from
generous sponsors (see page 3) who
support the festival.
In previous years we have had
geographic themes, but this year we
decided to try something a bit different,
and make the theme of the beer
selection match the festival as a whole
“Something for Everyone”.
We have many styles from classic
Brittish styles , tradional European
styles, to modern American, and a few
that are hard to place into any category.
We have a few rare beers too with
Brew York sending us one of only 6
casks of Dark Central imperial stout.
Twisted Barells put award winning IPA
Naido into cask for the first time ever
for us, and Wilderness brewing have
sent us Brux - a Belgian-style pale ale
aged in a Rijoca cask. To be honest, I
have no idea how its going to come out
but I look forward to finding out.
The main thing we really wanted
to share was our combinded passion
for beer, and to let it show in the
beers we’ve selected. So we gave each
member of the beer (a.k.a. “wet”) team
a personal pick. One beer that sums
up why we all volunteer our time each
festival and indeed throughout the year
as CAMRA members. These are their
picks, and why the “wet” team chose
them.
THE BEER THEME
Fullers - ESB (Extra Special Bitter)
Selected by Colin Anderson
Named Champion Beer of Britain in
1978, 1981 and 1985, this beer has been
at nearly every Newcastle Beer and
Cider Festival. In the “good old days”
it used to come in a real barrel (36
gallons), and was a really difficult beer
to look after. It took ages to clear, and
often needed to be “back tilted”.
Despite these drawbacks it was still
the best beer at many of our festivals.
In a former life, and before it became
widely available, I used to drive down
to Fuller’s brewery in Chiswick and
pick up a van load of their beer, always
including ESB, and distribute it around
a handful of decent real ale pubs in the
area, many of which are now closed
(the Cooperage) or shadows of their
former selves.
Hobsons - Town Crier
Selected by Peter Marquis
At the age of 18 I moved to a quiet
backwater on the Worcestershire-
Shropshire border. Fed up with lager,
and keg bitter, my Dad introduced me
to Real Ale, and the local brewery -
Hobsons.
The flavour from this simple beer,
brewed with hops and barley from the
local area, was a revelation, and put me
on the path to CAMRA. Town Crier has
since won several awards, and is just
the right beverage for a warn summers
evening in the beer garden
Piddle - Slasher
selected by Elspeth Winthrope
This beer hails from Dorset, from a
brewery named after the river that runs
through the village. It’s a beer you may
not have heard of before, and holds the
sentimental value of being my first real
ale.
Swannay - Scapa Bere
Selected by Jan Anderson
I first visited Orkney over 25 years
ago, and have been back almost every
year since then. Orkney is a fascinating
place, rugged coastline, sandy beaches,
loads of historical sites including
Scapa Flow, often windy, and you can
often see all four seasons in one day!
I met Rob Hill, the owner of Swanny
Brewery when he was head brewer at
Orkney Brewery. Rob opened Swannay
Brewery around 2005, and has been
brewing fantastic beers ever since.
One of my favourites is Orkney
Blast, but this beer is not available for
this year’s festival as the brewery is
expanding and building work is taking
place which includes a new brewery,
visitors centre and café.
So I have chosen Scapa Bere, a beer
brewed with 100% Orkney grown Bere
Barley, an old grain brought to the
island by the Vikings. It is a light amber
beer that gets it flavour and colour
from the Bere malt which also adds a
minerally, almost salty flavour.
I hope you enjoy Scapa Bere as
much as I do and if you are feeling
adventurous take a trip north and visit
the brewery!
Coniston - Old Man Ale
selected by Murray Owen
Many of you who have climbed
the Old Man of Coniston have most
likely called in to the Black Bull Inn
afterwards. A 400-year old coaching
inn, built about the time of the Spanish
Armada, and situated in the centre of
Coniston Village. Many famous people
have crossed its threshold including
Turner (artist), Coleridge and, more
recently, Donald Campbell.
On the occasion of my visit I had a
pint of this remarkable ale scoring it
4.5 (out of 5) on CAMRA’s beer scoring
system. When looking for my personal
pick I looked at all my previous beer
scores and of the few at 4.5 this ale,
Coniston’s Old Man, stood out. I hope
you enjoy it as much as I did.
Stewart Brewing - Radical Road Reverse
selected by Paul Hillhouse
As I tend to work most days at the
festival, I’m limited to how much I can
try - especialy of my prefered higher
ABV beers. So each year I tend to go
to a beer festival in a different branch
area. One of the first was the Scottish
Real Ale Fesitval (SRAF) in Edingburgh.
Over the course of the week I got to
try Radical Road Reverse, a 6% ABV IPA
in cask, keg, and from a wooden cask. I
was amazed as this beer has an equally
massive hit of malts and hops, and
it was transformed in each dispense
method, but was always very enjoyable.
So when I heard the big IPA had a
new session-strength version aiming
to pack in all the flavour of one of
my favourite beers it was an obvious
choice. Bring all the flavour, but at a
strenght that means people can go on
sampling more beers for the rest of the
night.
Champion Beers of Britain
The Champion Beer of Britain (CBOB)
competition is the most prestigious
prize CAMRA offers to brewers, and
this year at the festival we have the top
3 beers from the 2018 Champion Beer
of Britain awards, plus the 2019 Winter
Beer of Britain too!
We won’t take up any more of your
valuable drinking time. Thanks for
reading. We hope you like the beers,
and enjoy the festival,
By the time you read this the 2019
Battle of the Beers will have taken place.
Every brewery within our branch region
of Tyneside and Northumberland was
invited to brew a new beer in one of
two categories. This year the choice fell
between a dark pale ale, or a flavoured
porter or stout. The ABV could be
anywhere between 4% and 6%.
We had a fantastic response from the
majority of brewers, some of which now
see this competition as a great platform to
launch new beers. A number of previous
winners, and runners-up, can still be found
on tap having become core or seasonal
beers.
We’re delighted to have one of them -
Firebrick’s Belgian Wit (4.2%) - on back on
the bar this year for you.
The beers are judged by an independent
panel in the afternoon before the festival
opens. The winners are announced shortly
thereafter.
Keep an eye out for the pump clip
toppers with the BoB crossed swords,
and posters in the venue announcing the
winners.
Good luck to all the entrants!
The People’s Choice Awards
Pick your favourite festival drinks
We want to hear from you! What are your favourite
festival drinks? Last year saw Julia Austin’s Tyne Bank
team steal the show with “Stalin’s Cow” (10%), and
we’re delighted to say that Tyne Bank have brewed
this special beer for us again for this year’s festival. It
won’t be in the Battle of the Beers, but you will be able
to drink it at the bar.
The festival favourite for cider was Blood Orange (4%) by Sea Cider. We don’t have
the Blood Orange back this year, but we do have more than 50 ciders and perrys, plus
one pyder, for you to choose from.
This year we’re delighted to have Nickynoo’s Gin Bar at the festival, and so we’re
introducing a new category - your favourite gin. Visit Nickynoo’s gin bar, and vote for
your favourite.
So grab a voting card from the admissions bar, and vote for your favourites. We’d
love it if you also provided us with some feedback on the back of your People’s Choice
voting card.

43rd Newcastle Beer & Cider Festival
CIDER / PERRY CHOICES
real cider
& perry
Welcome to this
year’s festival from
the cider team.
We’re also introducing a 7-point
dryness/sweetness scoring system
to try and make your cider and perry
selection easier.
The cider team has scored all the
ciders and perrys, and aligned them
with the scale below:
There are quite a few changes
at this year’s festival, from the bar
lay-out and the cooling of stock, to a
dryness scoring system.
This year, in keeping with the
festival theme, we also have a much
wider variety of types - around 50
ciders and perrys, so we should have
“something for everyone”.
If you are unsure which ciders or
perrys you might like, please, just ask
the bar staff. We’ll be happy to help
you to find one that suits you.
Alongside traditional cider and
perry we also have a pyder which is an
apple and pear blend.
If there are any Ciders or Perrys you
would like to see at next years festival
please let us know.
As the venue tends to get a tad
warm we’ve introduced some new
technology this year. All the cider and
perry is going to be cooled. Not chilled,
just cooled to keep it in premium
condition, and perfect for drinking.
1 - Very Dry
2 - Dry
3 - Medium Dry
4 - Medium
5 - Medium Sweet
6 - Sweet
7 - Very Sweet
If you’d like to learn more about
ciders and perrys, we’re offering an
“introduction to cider” workshop right
here at the festival. It will take place
at 5pm on Thursday 11th April 2019,
and will take you through the different
types and styles of ciders and perrys.
Thank you to all who have helped
and supported the cider bar and the
festival this year.
43rd Newcastle Beer & Cider Festival
As I’m sure most of you are aware by
now, this festival is the work of many
like-minded people. The Festival Team
would like to thank you all for your
hard work.
We’d also like to thank all of the
visitors who took the time to come
and visit the festival. We hope you’ve
enjoyed sampling the 120 beers and 50
or so ciders and perrys. (Or at least as
many as you managed to get through.)
There are some who would say that
CAMRA has become a victim of it’s
own success - no longer do you have
to walk miles, or catch a bus, to get a
decent pint of real ale, or cider. Which
only goes to show - be careful what you
wish for!
Those of us who spend many hours
over many months putting this festival
together still belive that this festival is
something special. Indeed a number of
us joined CAMRA specifically because
of this festival.
If you’ve enjoyed the festival, and
aren’t yet a CAMRA member, then
perhaps you might like to consider
joining? Who knows - next year
you could be selecting the beers or
ciders, or pulling (half) pints at the
2020 festival (no previous experience
requited, as they say).
The 2020 dates aren’t 100% fixed just
yet, but it will definitely be in April
again, most likely 1st to 4th April.
In the meantime -
Cheers, Wassail, & Auf Wiedershen, Pet!
