Edinburgh holds the title for being the first
designated UNESCO City of Literature in the
world. It’s also the birthplace and home to
some of the world’s most loved writers. JK
Rowling wrote all the Harry Potter books here,
Kate Atkinson calls Edinburgh home, Rebus
and Ian Rankin are synonymous with the city
and it’s where The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie was
brought to life. Literary events, unique book
shops and cafes, and the largest International
The medieval streets of Norwich, UNESCO City
of Literature, have plenty of tales to tell and
some of the biggest crime writers and their fans
will be in the city for a four day celebration
of the genre in September. Readings, Q&As,
workshops and book signings will take place in
the Norwich Crime Writing Festival which is one
of the UK’s fastest growing literary festivals.
To further cement the literary heritage
of Norwich, award-winning author Philip
An instant hit when it was published over 90
years ago, the much-loved story of Tarka the
Otter by Henry Williamson has never been out
of print. When you visit North Devon you can’t
fail to notice the influence the slippery mammal
has had on the county! There’s Tarka Pottery,
the Tarka Inn and of course, the Tarka Trail.
The impressive 163 mile, figure of eight
trail brings the book to life by following the
route of the otter. From Sticklepath to
Barnstaple, Bideford and Ilfracombe through
parts of the South West Coast Path, Dartmoor
Way and the Two Moors Way, you may just spot
an otter on the way!
HAPPY
HOGMANAY!
Celebrating the New Year in Scotland has
always been a big affair. For hundreds of years,
Christmas was banned and it wasn’t until 1958
that the day was a made a public holiday, with
Boxing Day getting the same status in 1974.
While most of the world celebrated Christmas,
in Scotland it was just another working day with
everyone looking forward to getting together
with family and friends for the New Year, or
Hogmanay celebrations.
Starting on New Year’s Eve, Hogmanay goes
on till 2 January and if you want to join in the
party, Edinburgh is one of the places to be!
Thousands of revellers party in the streets with
a torch lit parade and fireworks over the famous
castle. Bands, DJs and street performers keep
the party atmosphere alive, which culminates
in a massive group rendition of Auld Lang Syne.
Dating back to the 1700s, the poem was written
by Scotland’s National Bard, Robert Burns, and
is now a global New Year’s Eve anthem.
16
Happy Hogmanay!
Other Hogmanay traditions include Redding
the House. Like a spring clean, the house is
cleaned for the New Year and evil spirits and
disease chased away! First Footing happens
after midnight when neighbours visit with
shortbread or black bun in return for a wee
dram! The first person to enter the house, the
first foot, could bring good luck for the year
ahead, especially if it’s a tall, dark, handsome
stranger as opposed to a fair headed person
who may have Viking roots!
You cannot be in Scotland on New Year’s Eve
and not attend a ceilidh! Gaelic music and
traditional dancing kick-start the celebrations
a few hours before midnight with the party
continuing long into the next morning!
Taking place on New Year’s Day, Loony Dook
was started in 1987 as a possible hangover cure!
With bagpipes playing from the river bank,
thousands of people hurtle into the icy waters
of the Firth of Forth at Queensferry for a dip!
17
If you decide the street party atmosphere of
Edinburgh is for you, the Village Hotel Edinburgh
is a great base for joining in all the celebrations.
Situated close to the Royal Botanic Garden and not
far from Edinburgh Zoo and Murrayfield Stadium,
the modern hotel offers great accommodation
and superb leisure facilities with a pub and
restaurant, gym and spa available to guests.
With an indoor swimming pool too, a post-party
hangover cure doesn’t have to include the
waters of the Firth of Forth either!
18
Happy Hogmanay!
If you fancy escaping for a few days after the hurly
burly of a city in celebration, head to the Orkney
Islands where there is much to discover. Ancient
monuments dating back to the Stone Age, Viking
graffiti, museums and traditional crafts plus flora,
fauna and wildlife beckon.
Getting to Orkney is a 45 minute ferry trip or flight
and once there, it’s hard to not fall for the charm of
this unique landscape and the stunning skyscapes,
where you may also witness the Northern Lights.
Overlooking the Loch of Stenness, the Standing
Stones Hotel is a superb start to an Orkney stay,
where winter horizons and summer sunsets paint
the perfect picture postcard scene.
Well-appointed en-suite accommodation with all
the facilities today’s traveller needs, plus a choice
of dining options are available. Enjoy breakfast with
views leading to the World Heritage sites, Standing
Stones and the Ring of Brodgar. For evening dining,
a menu of locally sourced produce from the land and
sea is served. The hotel also has a take-away menu
so guests can arrange a pack-up picnic to take on a
day out.
Dolphin spotting and challenging links golf could
be part of a New Year break at the Golf View Hotel
and Spa in Nairn, near Inverness. Located on the
banks of the Moray Firth, the historic building is
surrounded by idyllic gardens which lead down to
the shore. Nairn Golf Course is close-by and will test
the talented golfer as well as the amateur. Several
championships have taken place here, including the
2012 Curtis Cup and 1999 Walker Cup, and the course
scores close to the top ten in the 100 best Scottish
golf courses.
While at the Golf View Hotel make some time for
the spa and a seaweed treatment. Made from local
ingredients including seaweed from the Hebrides,
the vitamin and mineral rich treatment will leave
you nourished and hydrated.
20
Happy Hogmanay!
When only two golf courses will do, Murrayshall
Country House Hotel and Golf Club near Perth
will conveniently divide your time with their
18-hole courses. Set in 350 acres of stunning
park and woodland, you’re likely to see deer,
hare and wild birds as well as spectacular
views of the Perthshire mountains.
Clay pigeon shooting and fishing can be
arranged but if you just want some quality
time around a roaring fire place, you’re in the
right place! Award-winning dining will whet your
appetite and Stutts Bar, named after the golf course
designer, is the perfect place for a post-dinner tipple.
21
Charles Rennie Macintosh has long been recognised
as one of Scotland’s most creative figures.
To appreciate the iconic architect’s work a visit to
The Hill House in Helensburgh is recommended.
Considered to be one of his masterpieces, the house
showcases the geometric lines and simple elegance
synonymous with the designer and his wife, Margaret
Macdonald.
Between Helensburgh and the village of Rhu, on
the banks of the Gareloch, is the Ardencaple Hotel.
The former 19th century coaching inn is perfectly
located for visiting The Hill House as well as Three
Lochs Way. Incorporating Loch Lomond, Gareloch
and Loch Long, the scenic 34 mile walk can be
completed in three to four days. The trail takes
visitors through the many communities dotted
along the Clyde Sea lochs, past sites of Special
Scientific Interest and clan battle fields. The area is
home to red squirrels and the West Highland railway
line is never too far away if you decide walking is too
much! You should also visit the peaceful village
of Rhu and its pretty marina.
Located in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty, the family-run Cumberland Inn
overlooks the River South Tyne in the market town
of Alston. It’s ideally placed for discovering the
Pennine Way and the Lake District. It’s also a good
stop-off point for the Coast to Coast cycle route.
Cumberland Inn is a traditional pub with five
en-suite guest rooms which include a TV, hospitality
tray, toiletries and free WiFi. Guests can enjoy
traditional ciders and cask ales from award-winning
local breweries, along with home cooked bar meals
and the choice of a cooked or cold breakfast.
Pack-up lunches can also be organised. In the
summer enjoy al fresco dining and great views
from the patio.
“I’d recommend that if you think of passing through
Alston, change your mind and stay a day or two,
especially at this inn.”
