The nation’s largest and most influential association of military officers, MOAA helps members stay informed of relevant issues and network inside and outside of the military to develop their careers. “Everyone takes the uniform off at some time,” mentions chapter co-founder Commander Matt Walker. “The key is to have a plan for the end on day one. Begin with the end in mind.” What differentiates MOAA from other military organizations is its emphasis on networking and education for a successful transition after the military. In addition, the chapter is family-oriented. One of its objectives is to engage with spouses who may be seeking career, business, and reciprocal licensing opportunities while regularly on the move. In addition, outreach projects are planned to connect with the Elizabeth City community and ROTC programs at local colleges. The group is open to all branches and formulated so time-deprived service members (whether single or married) and it can invest in their future. Lee-Jackson Day - Jan. 18, 2018 By Dr. Dave Sons of Confederate Veterans We meet at Vickie’s Villa in Elizabeth City the 4th Tuesday every month at 7pm Lee-Jackson Day is a day set aside since January 19, 1904 to commemorate two of the south’s greatest leaders, Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson on January 12, 2018 and the whole 4-day weekend. The celebration began to honor the birthday of Robert E. Lee on January 19, 1889 and Stonewall Jackson’s remembrance was added to the holiday in 1904. Robert E. Lee was from Stafford West Moreland County in Virginia. His father, Henry Hall Lee was Light Horse Henry Lee who was a cavalry leader during the Revolution War. Robert was born in 1807 and passed in 1870. Known as the Marble Man, Robert E. Lee was the leading confederate General during the war of Northern Aggression. Offered the position of total Commanding General of all Yankee troops he refused it to stay with his native state of Virginia. Lee out witted and out fought every Yankee general put up against him but eventually had to give in to the Yankee atrocities of the actions of attrition and the overwhelming numbers. After the war he was named President of Washington College. Robert E. Lee passed on as one of the greatest soldier and General of his time had a stroke that took his life in 1870. Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson was born January 21, 1824 in Clarksburg, Virginia (which later became West Virginia). He graduated from West Point in 1846 where he first met Robert E. Lee during the Mexican-American War where Jackson was a second Lieutenant and later promoted to Major. In 1851 Jackson resigned his military commission and accepted a teaching position at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA. As professor of natural and experimental philosophy (Theology) and instructor of artillery. At the outbreak of the War of Northern Aggression Jackson accepted orders as a Colonel of Virginia Militia and then was promoted to Brigadier General and led troops to the epic battle of “Stonewall”. This was in 1861 and his charge saved the day and sent the Yankees to running with their tails between their legs all the way back to Washington D.C. This brought on another promotion for Jackson to Major General. He was dispatched to the Shenandoah Valley and then to Chancellorsville, VA where he out flanked the Yankee army and again got them fleeing like rats. That same night of May 2, 1863 Jackson was shot and passed away on May 10th. So fly your flags and banners high on January 18-21, 2018 in honor of these great men.
