Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse
Hermann Karl Hesse 2 July 1877 – 9 August 1962 was a German-born
poet, novelist, and painter. His best-known works
include Demian, Steppenwolf, Siddhartha, and The Glass Bead
Game, each of which explores an individual’s search for authenticity,
self-knowledge and spirituality. In 1946, he received the Nobel
Prize in Literature.
Siddhartha is a novel by Hermann Hesse that deals with the
spiritual journey of self-discovery of a man named Siddhartha
during the time of the Gautama Buddha. The book, Hesse’s ninth
novel, was written in German, in a simple, lyrical style. It was published
in the U.S. in 1951 and became influential during the 1960s.
In Hesse’s novel, experience, the totality of conscious events of a
human life, is shown as the best way to approach understanding
of reality and attain enlightenment—Hesse’s crafting of Siddhartha’s
journey shows that understanding is attained not through
intellectual methods, nor through immersing oneself in the carnal
pleasures of the world and the accompanying pain of samsara. It
is the completeness of these experiences that allows Siddhartha
to attain understanding.
The word Siddhartha is made up of two words in Sanskrit language,
siddha (achieved) + artha (what was searched for), which
together means “he who has found meaning (of existence)” or “he
who has attained his goals”. In fact, the Buddha’s own name, before
his renunciation, was Siddhartha Gautama, Prince of Kapilavastu.
In this book, the Buddha is referred to as “Gotama”.
Perquimans Chamber
by Colleen Brown
One thing about the Perquimans River (I don’t know
if you’ve noticed): it is always beautiful. Driving
through the county, or down Grubb Street in Hertford
where you can see the historic S-Bridge, any time of
day, any day of the year, in any weather, the river is just
so beautiful. No matter how dreary or gloomy the day
might be, a view of the river is a joyous thing.
I’ve seen it in the summer when the blue of the river is
intoxicating or delicious – almost edible -- and not jumping
in and being part of it seems impossible. All those
bridges and docks and boat ramps and piers throughout
the county seem like open invitations to join the ducks
and the fish and turtles. With a little effort, you can
probably find a cypress knuckle that’s unoccupied to
sun yourself on (or maybe the local turtle residents will
make room for one more).
I’ve seen it on one of the characteristic late autumn
days when the weather suddenly warms after a cold
spell and fog is strolling across the surface of the water.
The rest of the world seems grey and a little damp,
but you find yourself thinking, do I really have to go to
work today? Because putting a boat into the water and
drifting with that fog suddenly seems like the only way to
spend the morning. Maybe a thermos of coffee. Maybe
a fishing pole. Maybe a camera.
you’re not careful, a picture of the river reflection taken
in the evening will look the same no matter how you
turn it. I’ve seen it in the rain, wrinkled like washed linen
and when one of those pink-orange sunsets makes it
look like a Valentine card. And I’ve seen it on a day like
today with a bright sky but no visible sun. An ordinary,
slightly dull day that challenges the spirit to be bright,
no matter how festive the season. And, even today, the
river is beautiful.
Beat Winter Mold Growth this New Year By Harry Cannon, with Laura Bush Jenkins
Did you know while you are entertaining family,
raising your children, and working to get ahead
this New Year, mold may be growing inside your
home?
Yes, mold grows in winter months.
Increased humidity and moisture can create a
favorable environment for mold. It spreads through
spores that land on damp spots and begins growing
by digesting surfaces such as fabric, paper, and wood.
The EPA reports increased exposure in your home
can bring about sensitivity and health problems. Mold
can cause burning sensation to the skin, lungs, nose,
throat, or eyes. It is important to put an end to this as
soon as possible.
Instead of relying on outdated approaches, Dwelling
Management Solutions uses nationally recognized
testing and EPA registered treatments. Instead of
doing it yourself with constant spraying and chemicals
that may harm your health, we can do yearly or twice
yearly checks. We understand proper application to
keep you safe and avoid future growth.
This means better breathing and peace of mind for
you.
Stay proactive and protect your property this
new year. Ask about our $25 mold inspection for
WHAT’S IN YOUR DIET?
hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season.
Well, it’s January and my annual optimizing time.
This year rather than dreading the task of modifying my
diet and behavior, I’m looking forward to it. I’ve tailored
mine this time by eliminating dairy (except probiotic
yogurt) , and I’ve reduced refined carbohydrates to bare
minimums (that’s primarily bread with less than 4gms of
fiber). I’ve cut down dramatically on cured red meat and
poultry. I call my diet a “Modified Mediterranean Diet”.
There’s preliminary evidence that regular consumption
of olive oil, which is a major component of the diet, lowers
the risk of cancer, stroke and cardiac issues.
I’ve been gathering data on federally subsidized
animal products and how they relate to health and the
economy. Agriculture subsides total about 20 billion dollars
a year with a major share going to the dairy industry.
So let’s connect the dots:. 90% of the population of the
United States are lactose intolerant. That’s nine out of
ten Americans. Milk products have unlabeled growth
hormones, unlabeled antibiotics, and a plethora of
unlabeled medications. Earlier I wrote that circa 1996,
Monsanto petitioned the administration and was granted
permission to use rBGH hormones in dairy cows. The
hormone necessitates the use of antibiotics because
antibiotics mitigates the inflammation and fattens the
animals. Antibiotics have been linked to serious nerve
damage, and damage to the immune system. Cancer
survivors should avoid dairy products at all cost.
Congress has passed theturkey 867 billion dollar farm
bill. The bill removes the restriction on hemp farming
allowing it to be legally grown in the United States
and regulated by the States. The bill includes money
to promote and protect dairy industries. And, provides
True Grits
by: Coy Domecq
One of the failings of growing up eating a local staple is we
sometimes take for granted that everyone is familiar with
what is truly a regional dish and not well known beyond our
personal borders. This is the case for the southern specialty
grits. History reveals that at least in 1579, Native American
tribes used the dried pounded local maize to prepare a boiled
corn product. Around 1585, one member of Sir Walter Raleigh’s
Roanoke Island exploration party posted this original Yelp-like
review upon dining with local American natives, “very white,
faire, and well-tasted” boiled corn.
Grits do not have much to offer in the way of nutrition, they
are low in fat but low in almost everything thing else too. A
serving of grits has about 10% carbohydrate content and approximately
8% iron. One of the greatest benefits of a hot bowl
of grits on a cold morning is that it is warming and sticks to your
ribs for a while. Even though purists would never consider eating
neutral-tasting grits with anything more than salt and butter,
many variations include the addition of syrup, jelly, bacon and
eggs, gravy, and of course cheese.
Grits is or are (do not get me started) a product of our past but
also enjoy fancified modern recipes that are popular throughout
the country across many cuisines. Grits, known as polenta in
some circles, are associated with hominy, corn mush, and corn
meal depending upon the size to the particles, type of corn, and
the method of preparation. Proper cooking of grits is both an art
and a science littered with many disgruntled cooks who cannot
seem to get the hang of successful grit-ology.
Creamy Shrimp + Cheddar Grits
(inspiredhome.com)
SERVINGS 3-4
For the Grits:
• 1 tablespoons of olive oil
• 1 small diced yellow onion
• 2 cups of white grits
• 6 cups of chicken stock
• 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter
• 8 ounces of shredded white cheddar grits
• Kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper to taste
For the Shrimp:
• 1 teaspoon of olive oil
• 6 strips of bacon thinly sliced
• 5 minced cloves of garlic
• 1 pound of peeled and deveined shrimp
• ¾ cup of cream sherry
• 1 ½ cups of heavy whipping cream
• Kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS
1. Grits: Add the olive oil to a medium size pot
on medium heat and cook the onions for 6 to 8
minutes or until lightly browned.
2. Add in the grits and chicken stock, stir and
cover for 20 to 25 minutes or until the grits are
al dente.
3. Finish the grits with butter, shredded cheddar,
salt and pepper and keep warm.
4. Shrimp: In a large saute pan on high heat
with 1 teaspoon of olive oil, cook the bacon until it
is crispy.
5. Once cooked, remove the bacon and the
shrimp and garlic to the pan with the rendered
bacon fat and saute for 3 to 4 minutes or until the
shrimp is done.
6. Once the shrimp is cooked, remove them
from the pan and deglaze with cream sherry and
reduce until there is 2 tablespoons of liquid left.
7. Add the cream and cook over medium heat
until it becomes very thick, think Alfredo sauce.
8. Add the shrimp, bacon, salt and pepper to the
cream mixture and mix.
JIM KAIGHN INSURANCE AGENCY- HOME OF THE “INSURANCE DOCTOR”
VALUE OF EXTENDED WARRANTIES AND GROUP LIFE INSURANCE
HAPPY NEW YEAR FOLKS, you members of the the
“Greatest generation”, you “Baby Boomers”, like me,
you “Millennials” and “Generation X,Y, and Zers”. This new
year hopefully brings you all special happiness and riches
{money and common sense)worth..My first article here was
asked of me by a life long friend here in Elizabeth City, N.C.
He wanted to know about the values of buying EXTENDED
WARRANTIES on products.. As most of you know or will
know, no matter what group above you are in, whenever
you buy a product,( new car, used car, appliances, watch,
toaster, smart phone, anything) it comes with a warranty
from the manufacturer..depending on the value of the item
or how extravagant it is, the warranty will GUARANTEE that
item against many problems that might befall that item.. New
car --bumper to bumper coverage for 36 months or 36,000
miles..EXCEPT certain things that you are responsible
for--tires, oil change, fluids.. you know all this.. BUT HERE
comes the salesman
now or 6 months later calling you to buy and EXTENDED
WARRANTY that will cover you car for an additional amount
of time and mileage that overlaps the manufactures warranty
.. TOTAL WASTE OF YOUR MONEY.. Just like buying
any extended warranty for appliances or ANYTHING!!
You all see the ads on t.v. or get calls on the phone that
your warranty from the manufacture is running out and
now is the time to buy over EXTENDED warranty to protect
yourself against COSTLY REPAIRS that will fall on you..
They never tell you that these new coverages are for off the
wall repairs and that you much take them back to them or to
certain places to be fixed..Most products made today have
a shelf life for a certain amount of years, then they break,
forcing you to repair the problem with these EXTENDED
plans, only to find out you must mail it back to the manufacture
at your expense.. Bottomline folks, you can save
your money and set funds aside to take care these items..
The companies that sell these warranties ( which is no more
than INSURANCE) make 100 % PROFIT from the cost for
their own pocket..This is big business for companies and
you would not believe the number of people who are duped
into these.. Yes sometimes these warranties do work, but
the number of times they don’t are much more...............
This is my, the authors’, humble opinion!!Caveat Emptor..
LET THE BUYER BEWARE!!------------------ The second
thing I want to warn folks about is the FALSE BELIEF about
having GROUP LIFE INSURANCE at work and this is all a
family needs to protect them..Boys and Girls, I have been in
my business now for 51 years, and by far, this is the biggest
problem I have run across!! Most workers do not even know
how much they have or how it suppose to work.. They do
not understand that it is not set up by any one entity who
tries to match the family’s needs, no it is mostly a replacement
of salary for 6 month, or one year.. they just know they
have some, probably because the employer pays for it, so
I don’t need any outside contract.. Folks, if you have these
thoughts or fall into these naive ideas, then the only people
who will be hurt for your lack of knowledge, is your family
who is left behind.. Your employer or human resources
should tell you these facts, but they don’t.. IT IS NOT YOUR
by Jim KAIGHN, CLU,CHFC,RHU,AABA, BSBA,LUTCF
FAULT you have
no knowledge of
this, but it will be
your fault once you
learn about these
money matters,
and do nothing
about it!!!.OOOOH
sorry, one more
thing from the first
part of this article..
when you do buy
a home, DO NOT
BUY MORTGAGE
LIFE INSURANCE to cover the mortgage from the lender.. It
has many pitfalls, so call me and I will explain this and any
other insurance or money matters you wish to know about..
Again, new year, new thoughts for you money.. I may be
contacted at 252 335 5983 or 252 202 5983, or my e-mail is
INSDR@ROADRUNNER.COM
INSURANCE TIP OF THE MONTH-- When you park your
car in an area that has two spots, one in front of the one
you just pulled into..DRIVE UP TO THAT ONE!! When you
back out of a stop, you are 20 times more likely to back into
someone or another car behind you .. It is very hard to whip
your head around three or four times to see if you are clear..
It is MUCH EASIER TO PULL OUT OF A SPOT AND AVOID
AN ACCIDENT, and car insurance hassles.. and ou might
save a child’s life!!
Dear Dr. Crime: We have a friend at school who was
sexually assaulted! When she told us, a bunch of her
girlfriends, we did not know what to say. The fellow
involved is a real SOB and we hate him. But we want
to know what to tell her and other girls, what practical
things to do. Please help us. Angry 11th grade girls.
Dear Miss. I am sorry that happened, and will pray
for her. While the #MeToo movement is welcome, the
problem is not new. The History TV channel reports that
reports of sexual assault began when people started recording
history. They cite records from ancient Greece,
the Bible and other sources, so it is reasonable to count
such violence as long standing. Tell your friend that she
is not to blame, it can happen to anyone. She or other
girls should get away from the creep asap and call 911
and a family member she trusts. Do not clean anything,
but go to the hospital for an examination. For greater
details about responding, see albemarlehopeline.org
and the Office on Women’s Health of the US Dept. of
Health and Human services.
Dear Dr. Crime: I think you have your ideas wrong
when you tell us not to use pot. If it was bad for us, the
government of many states would not be legalizing it.
Back off and let us follow our political leaders’ ideas.
Green Leaf Lad
Dear Lad: Follow our political leaders? Well in that
regard I suggest you watch TV news more. As for pot,
I have in past columns given you clear evidence of the
pot effects. The January, 2019 issue of Monitor on
Psychology has a new report on that. It seems that research
following 3,826 kids for years found that marijuana
caused harm to the adolescent brain. That involved
memory, reasoning and self-control. In fact, it was
worse that alcohol in causing such harm. I stick by my
position: Kids, stay away from pot unless your physician
prescribes it for medical use.
Dear Dr. Crime: Are we having changes in the fundamental
nature of humanity? Is there “social change” and
what are the effects on people? I know church membership
has dropped. Concerned Pastor
Dear Pastor: A quick answer is yes and the effects are
too many and complex to adequately document in my
column. But I can attempt a limited response, simply
because the issues you raise must be addressed and
resolved or we risk frightening future events. An eloquent
and descriptive discussion of the social problems
may be found in the profound essays of Holly Audette,
as for example her Daily Advance column of 8/1/2018.
Her work is highly recommended. Another illustration of
our social problems is the rise in suicide rates. The rise
in suicide rates among females in America from 2000 to
2016 was 50%. Wow! In the same period male suicide
rates went up 21%.
Dear Dr. Crime: This is a strong objection to your portrayal
of males as the cause of bad behavior and social
problems, while sweet little girls contribute nothing! The
reason men excel beyond women is that they earn it!
Back off! Local Guy
Dear Sir: Please put the gender problems in perspective.
Do you know that for years psychological and
medical research was based on studies of men only with
generalizations to all humans? It was assumed to apply
to women. While that has changed now so categories
of sex and race are included in research, men still hold
most of the top leadership positions across public and
private operations. Men commit 90% of the homicides
and are 77% of murder victims. The current issue of
Monitor on Psychology reviews gender role stereotypes
and finds the research shows what we attribute to men,
stoicism, competitiveness, dominance and aggression
has been shown to be harmful. The research showed
that the positive traits expected of men actually are more
often expected of women. Your concerns focus on a
major sociological issue we must address. Keep up the
conversation on gender issues and problems, we can
improve the future.
Chowanoke History
by Duvonya Chavis
glimpse into several Native American civilizations
A centuries prior to European colonization will reveal an
American Indian culture that overall was not primitive, considering
the period of time. In fact, one could view American
Indian culture as being far more advanced when compared
to many other cultures during the same time frame, including
those of the European sector. Such American Indian
communities indeed existed within the United States where
one example can be seen by examining the culture of the
Chacoan people, who in 800 AD once lived in an area known
today as New Mexico. Much has been written that details the
advanced techniques that allowed the Chacoan people to
construct a community in the 800’s that was larger than England.
Their community contained the largest buildings in the
United States that were not surpassed in size until the 19th
century. In fact, the Chacoans used unique techniques for
constructing massive stone buildings that spanned several
stories high and contained hundreds of rooms that were held
up by massively thick walls purposely designed to hold the
weight.
The Chacoan community was comprised of several of
these massive homes which were all connected by roads.
One can imagine the complexity of social organization
required in order to construct these massive structures and
build community infrastructure. Not only were the buildings
massive, but they were oriented to solar and lunar cycles
and lined in such a manner to allow communication between
the buildings. To put this in modern perspective, the Chacoan
people are ancestors of the Pueblo and Hopi Indians
who live in Arizona and New Mexico today. Without going
into detail, the Chacoan community also exhibited many aspects
of Mayan culture particularly during its rituals, trading
of exotic artifacts and in the construction of its massive buildings,
irrigation systems, and roads. Keep in mind that this
occurred in the 800’s, 700 years before colonial contact. Also
prior to the construction of this massive community, these
Indians had been accustomed to constructing and living in
smaller stone houses for centuries prior.
While the Chacoan community may have had more
complex infrastructure due to its community size and to the
arid climate of the Southwest, social organization was also
required on the east coast to maintain its American Indian
communities. Some similarities have been noted in historical
documents that reveal stories of interesting and complex
interactions that the North Carolina coastal plains Indians
had with the Europeans. There are documents noting that in
1609, explorers of the Lost Colony were living in a Tuscarora
village called Pakerikinick to reports in 1614 that Jamestown
explorers went to a Tuscarora village called Ocamahawan
where the Indians had built two-story “stone” houses and
used brass utensils, and to another report noting that in
1654, a wealthy Spaniard, possessing slaves, had been
living among the Tuscarora for several years. In 1670, it was
noted that the Spanish had set up a trading post in a Tuscarora
village called Kateras, which was described as a place
of “great Indian trade and commerce.” The Chowanoke
Indians were also reported as building two story houses in
the 1600s, although these houses were not particularly noted
as being made from stone. As historical documents are
pieced together along with archaeological findings, theories
and perpetuation of a primitive mode of Native existence will
hopefully be quenched. The communities mentioned in this
article are just a small number of communities that existed
across the United States prior to colonial invasion.
2019: The Year of the Space-Age Home
(BPT) - In 2019, the “space-age” home will become a reality
with modern innovations that are poised to change the way
we think about luxury, elegance and comfort. Incorporating
advanced technology into your home is essential when elevating
its overall style, design and functionality.
What better way to create a futuristic environment than by
living like an astronaut in your own home. You can do exactly
that with the new Flotation Tub with ZERO DIMENSION
from TOTO. Made from proprietary Galaline man-made
marble, the stylish tub combines a luxury spa aesthetic with
space-age technology that simulates zero gravity by offering
bathers a weightless experience. After more than a decade’s
research, TOTO discovered that a unique posture - with the
reclining body stabilized and the hips, knees and ankles
flexed - reduced the joints’ mechanical energy/load to nearly
zero. Astronauts sleep in this position; it enables the most
relaxing rest possible. Cerebral blood flow studies show
activity in the left ventrolateral prefrontal cortex - the part of
the brain responsible for language - is dramatically reduced,
enabling a meditative state.
With the TOTO Flotation Tub as a bathroom focal point
that showcases luxurious design, add sleek accessories to
enhance your space, such as a smart mirror that doubles as
a TV monitor. Imagine checking the weather as you put on
your makeup or watching the news as you shave, creating
a dual functionality and must-have futuristic design component.
Space-age aesthetic is all about blending minimalistic
features with high-tech devices, allowing for a seamless
transition between design and innovation. But why stop with
just the bathroom? Consumers will continue to see a vast
range of technological innovations throughout 2019, inspiring
home transformations that are out of this world!
To reach new worlds, innovation is key, especially when it
comes to energy efficiency. For state-of-the-art elements
both inside and outside your home, consider installing the
highly anticipated solar windows that will collect solar energy
while remaining transparent. The windows utilize photovoltaic
technology, similar to what’s being incorporated into solar
blinds and solar roofs. These kinds of energy-conscious
building materials will add a space-age look and functionality
to your home, bringing you into the next century.
Make everyday life more efficient with a home automation
system, a rapidly growing innovative technology that allows
users to manage various household settings with one single
command. Users have control of their entire house at their
fingertips including their security, lighting, climate and entertainment
systems, even their household appliances.
By incorporating an innovative and design-forward centerpiece
like TOTO’s Flotation Tub, along with additional subtle,
sleek tech accessories and gadgets into your living space,
the space-age, futuristic home can become your reality.
Albemarle Loop
Back in 2014 when Jack Atwell and Steve Harris were
thinking of ways to increase the number of visitors
to Albemarle Plantation’s marina, they hit upon the idea
of creating a promotional vehicle they called the Albemarle
Loop. Aimed primarily at the 2,500 boaters who
migrate along the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (ACW)
from Norfolk to Florida every spring and fall, “The Loop”
would invite boaters to pause on their journey and visit
the marinas and towns along the Albemarle Sound. Jack
and Steve got the Dismal Swamp Canal Visitor Center
and marinas in Edenton, Manteo, Columbia, Hertford,
Elizabeth City, and Plymouth to join Albemarle Plantation
as members, and began promoting the idea of exploring
the Albemarle Sound to the boating public with a colorful
brochure and a website http://www.albemarleloop.com.
by Claude Milot
Albemarle Plantation is a good example of the results
of Albemarle Loop promotions. In 2014 only 2 transient
boaters had stopped at Albemarle Plantation’s marina.
In 2015 that number jumped to 43 and then to 44 the following
year, in spite of the closure of the Dismal Swamp
Canal to repair damage from Hurricane Matthew. In 2017
transient visitors numbered 59 and increased their number
to 76 in 2018. As a result of a number of promotional
programs initiated in 2017 and 2018, member marinas
have also enjoyed significant increases in visitors.
In the past year the “The Loop” initiated a Facebook
presence www.facebook.com/pg/AlbemarleLoop; became
a registered North Carolina corporation with by-laws
and a Board of Directors; and added volunteer assistant
directors for the website and Facebook, marketing and
announcements about an exciting new promotional idea,
“Life on the Loop, Spring Celebration,” a festival of events
taking place in sites and towns along Albemarle Sound,
highlighting the best in the region’s culinary and visual
arts, history, music and sports entertainment, boating,
and local festivals. It’s going to be a great year for those
transient ACW boaters to find out why the Albemarle
Sound is such a great place to enjoy all the best that life
has to offer.
SWAMPROOTS ~ A Timeless Gift
By Jimmy Fleming mrflemz@embarqmail.com
wamproots” is a local magazine compiled by
“S high school students from 1974 through 1984.
The project started in 1974 by a group of junior year
Columbia high school English students taught by
Mrs. Madge Vanhorne. As topics were discussed
for a class project … writing a journal about local
folklore and history took precedent. The project was
approved by the powers that be and the first staff was
organized. The original staff was composed of Bobby
Albanese, April Clough, Grady Fenner, Janice Pledger,
and Terri Spencer. Bobby was the artist in the
group and designed the cover art which was used for
every issue just changing the cover color each time.
The 1983 Volume 10 edition of “Swamproots” won the
Hodges Award given by the North Carolina Society
Of County & Local Historians for the best publication
of local history by high school students in North
Carolina. Another tribute was paid to “Swamproots”
in 1993 when local author Fiona Finch included a
group of her favorite stories from “Swamproots” in her
book “A Heart’s Delight” which celebrated Columbia’s
bicentennial. The series of 12 issues have been read
and enjoyed by thousands over the years and are still
popular today. The students who participated in this
project over the 10 years it was published learned a
great deal about local history and left a great legacy
of Tyrrell folklore for many future generations to enjoy.
Orthodox Christianity
The Crown of the Year
by Fr Jonathan Tobias, MDiv, MSEd
On New Year’s Day, the Orthodox Church offers a special
prayer that is all about “beginnings”:
“Bless the crown of the year with Your loving-kindness.”
This beautiful line comes after a number of other requests:
“Have mercy on the people according to the uncountable
number of Your mercies. Fill their cupboards with every
good thing. Preserve their marriages in peace and harmony.
Raise the infants in tenderness. Guide the young in wisdom.
Support the aged. Encourage the faint-hearted. Reunite the
separated. Sail with those who sail upon the seas, journey
with those who journey by land and air. Defend the widows,
protect the orphans, free the captives and heal the sick.”
Then the prayer turns to even deeper concerns: “Remember,
O God, those who are being judged against, those who
are in prison, in exile, at hard and desperate labor, and those
in any kind of affliction, iron necessity or distress. Lead back
those who are wandering in confusion and join them to Your
holy, catholic and apostolic church.”
There is a bright confidence in these requests. We would
never ask such things from a powerful figure who had no
compassion, and was only about power. These prayers can
only be offered out of a conviction that God is Father, and
that He is Love.
All beginnings, even this New Year, are rooted in divine
goodness. In every beginning, God calls His creation to a
destiny of beauty and peace. And between the beginning and
the destiny, God is never absent. He is closer than any other
friend. Indeed, He is closer to you than you are to yourself.
The prayer continues: “You Yourself remember everyone, O
God, since You know the name and age of each, even from
their mother’s womb. You O Lord, are the Help of the helpless,
the Hope of the hopeless, the Savior of the bestormed,
the Haven of the voyager, the Physician of the sick. Be all
things to all mankind …”
This prayer is from the Liturgy of St Basil the Great, a
fourth-century bishop in the center of present-day Turkey.
New Year’s Day happens to be the day of his commemoration.
So we celebrate the liturgy that was written by him.
It is a wonderful coincidence that on his day we pray such
a beautiful prayer for the New Year. The best resolution that
we can make is to ask the God of all beginnings to bless the
“crown of the year” with His loving-kindness.”
The grocery store scoop: Debunking common myths
(BPT) - When you enter a grocery store, you’re suddenly
faced with thousands of options. You want to get
the staples you need and you want the best nutrition for
your family, but it’s easy to get overwhelmed. How do
you know what’s your best choice?
“Options like brown versus vitamin-enriched white
bread, or, grade A versus AA eggs can cause confusion
for even savvy shoppers,” says Registered Dietitian and
Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner, winner of the ABC
television show “My Diet Is Better Than Yours.” “With so
many choices it’s difficult to know what’s what.”
When fresh fruits aren’t available, she reminds people to
look for frozen alternatives, noting many frozen options
are picked at the peak of freshness and flash frozen to
capture high nutrient content. The best frozen varieties
are those without added sauces or seasonings.
“When you know the truth, you are empowered to make
smart decisions while you shop so you can get superior
products with superior nutrition,” says Blatner. “Then
you can have fun making tasty recipes your family will
devour.”
DWI / DUI Groups
Blatner reveals the truth about some of the most common
myths and misconceptions of grocery store staples
to streamline trips and ensure you’re bringing home the
most nutritious options.
Bread
Many people believe the darker the bread, the healthier
it is, causing them to skip labels and grab a brown
loaf on the go. The problem is, just because bread is
brown doesn’t mean it’s whole grain. That color could be
achieved through caramel coloring.
“What you see doesn’t tell the whole story, so it’s important
to look at labels to get the facts,” says Blatner.
“Whole grain and sprouted grain are always good bread
choices for better nutrition. It’s also important to pay
attention to sugar content. There are many great options
available with 0 grams of sugar.”
Eggs
Egg-grading systems were created by the USDA to
mark interior and exterior quality of eggs. Many people
ignore this system and simply choose eggs based on
appearance or price. To get the best nutrition, buy from
a producer that has its own quality standards that go
above and beyond USDA requirements.
Blatner provides an example: “Grade A specifications
for Eggland’s Best eggs are actually more strict than
standard grade AA specifications for regular eggs. That
means, no matter what grade you choose, they provide
the highest quality egg that’s fresher and tastier. And
with six times more vitamin D, 25 percent less saturated
fat, more than double the Omega-3s, 10 times more vitamin
E, and more than double the vitamin B12 compared
to ordinary eggs, they’re also the most nutritious choice.”
Produce
The produce section is one of the healthiest places in
the grocery store, but the notion that the misters are
there to make items look good and add water weight so
they cost more at checkout is a myth. That water helps
ensure fruits and vegetables stay fresh, especially items
that could wilt, like lettuce.
“Give items a good shake to get rid of water weight,”
suggests Blatner. “And remember to always rinse fresh
produce well once you’re home to clean the surface of
any dirt and bacteria. The mist at the store isn’t meant to
clean, only to help maintain freshness.”
Blatner offers one such recipe for inspiration:
Zesty Egg Fried Rice Lettuce Wraps
Ingredients:
4 Eggland’s Best eggs (large)
2 tablespoons Sriracha sauce
6 strips lean smoked bacon, chopped
2 cups cooked jasmine rice
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce
1/3 cup sliced scallion greens
12 leaves Boston/Bibb lettuce
Directions:
In a medium bowl, whisk eggs and Sriracha together
until well combined.
In large non-stick skillet, over medium-high heat, cook
bacon until crisp. Transfer bacon to plate, leaving drippings
in the skillet. When cooled, chop bacon into small
pieces.
Drizzle the egg mixture into the skillet, stirring as you
drizzle. Add bacon, black pepper, rice and soy sauce to
skillet and stir-fry 3-4 minutes, or until eggs are set. Stir
in scallion tops.
Remove from heat. Divide the mixture among the lettuce
leaves and serve immediately.
Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity receives calls frequently
from people in urgent need of housing. While
we wish that we could help people with immediate housing
needs, Habitat builds and rehabs houses for qualified
homebuyers. We don’t have houses available for immediate
occupancy.
The process to become a Habitat homeowner is lengthy
because our loans are zero interest. Contrary to the
common misconception, Habitat houses are not free but
their cost due to the zero interest is much lower than most
rentals.
Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity is chartered to build and
rehab houses in Pasquotank County and applicants must
live in the county.
Since applicants are applying to purchase a house, they
must meet financial requirements and be approved by a
mortgage officer. All homeowners must provide documentation
of household income and show the ability to pay a
mortgage and must provide their credit score. Per Habitat
requirements, applicants must not pay more than 30% of
their gross income for their mortgage payment. Since the
average payment is approximately $500 (which includes
taxes and insurance), that means a monthly gross income of
at least $1500.
Unlike a conventional mortgage, applicants must also have
a specific need. Some examples are poor quality housing,
rent of more than 30% of the gross income, crowded conditions,
bad neighborhood or high utility bills. The need must
be verified when we conduct a home visit.
Habitat builds houses WITH, not FOR, partner families.
Applicants must be willing to complete 500 hours of sweat
equity on their house as well as other Habitat projects. Applicants
must complete a First Time Homebuyer class at River
City Community Development Corporation which includes
budgeting and credit counseling. The hours for these classes
count toward the sweat equity requirement. The sooner
applicants begin completing these hours, the better because
this shows a willingness to partner with Habitat. At least 50
hours must be completed before we order any materials for
a house. Family members and friends can also work and
have their hours credited to the family.
Habitat chooses a floor plan to meet the family’s needs on
lots that we own within the city limits. We work with families
on the design but we make final decisions.
Our two main forms of income are our mortgage payments
and our store revenue. Homeowner payments help us to
build the next house, so homeowners are really “paying it
forward.” Store expenses are kept to a minimum so that the
profits can be used for home construction.
Applications are available at Taylor Mueller Realty, 440 S.
Hughes Blvd., or our store, 306 Mill St. which is open Tuesday,
2-6; Thursday, 1-5; and Saturday, 8-4. In addition to the
application, applicants must submit a copy of their latest tax
return, income statement and credit score. For additional
information, contact Jane Elfring, 252-384-0115.
control is who has been handling your food and whether
they are practicing adequate food safety. Each year,
foodborne illnesses sicken close to 50 million Americans
and lead to more than 130,000 hospitalizations and 3,000
deaths. A lot of these illnesses are caused by simple things
like restaurant employees’ failure to properly wash hands,
cooking surfaces and fruits and vegetables.
Foodborne illnesses present a greater challenge to certain
groups of people with reduced immunity, such as children
younger than age 4 and people older than age 50. Food can
also become compromised much earlier in the production
process, and for this reason food producers are using a
variety of means to keep our food safe.
One approach uses the concept of hurdle technology in
which a variety of mild steps (hurdles) are used to limit
microbial growth at each stage of production. These include
combinations of weak acid treatments with gentle heating
and reduced humidity, or alternating low heat and chilling
treatment. The fresh-bagged salads you see at the grocery
store are a good example of this. Vacuum-packed products,
prepared under rigorous hygienic conditions and heated at
lower temperatures, are another.
Other technologies include the addition of antimicrobial
agents such as enzymes and other natural compounds that
inhibit the growth of bacteria or prevent oxidation. Salt too is
a very effective anti-bacterial in food. In fact, it is the oldest
known food preserver. Salt is widely used in the production
of all cheeses, cured meats and many fish dishes.
Salt preservation works by influencing the amount of water
that all microorganisms require to survive and grow. The
use of salt in controlling water means that the levels of other
preservatives or processes can be reduced. This means that
microbiological safety can be achieved with reduced heat,
acidity and other preservatives. This results in a product of
vastly improved taste and nutritional quality because of the
improved retention of other nutrients.
However, as the federal government pushes companies
toward lower salt content there are some concerns that it
could affect food safety and increase the amount of preservatives
that must be used. Many prefer salt as the more
natural choice.
Fortunately, food safety is a leading concern of the Food
and Drug Administration and its Commissioner, Scott Gottlieb,
and the newly appointed Deputy Commissioner, Frank
Yiannas, who was previously Vice President of Food Safety
at Walmart, and Director of Safety and Health at Walt Disney
World.
Food safety is an ongoing challenge for an enormous and
complex food system, and although challenges continually
arise, exercising caution and attention in food purchasing,
storage and preparation will minimize the risks. Remember
to not only eat healthy but to also eat safely.
Winter is here and with the exception of
some Rockfish biting here and there, not
much fishing is going on from the piers, surf
or boats. However, January is a great time
to prepare for the upcoming fishing season.
Let’s start with your rod and reels. Now is a
great time to strip off that old line and take or
mail your reels in for servicing. Some of us are
lucky because we have someone local who
performs this service. For others, they have to
be mailed to shops that specialize in repairs
of specific brands or to the factories that offer
service on their brands. If you mail them off,
make sure you get tracking and insurance for
the replacement value of your reel. I prefer
sending mine with UPS or FedEx because
they have a better insurance guarantee should
the reels be lost or stolen. I always call or
email and communicate with someone before I
send my reel to make sure how long it is going
to take, what service they will be doing, and
how much it will cost. Email is great but there
is nothing better than speaking to the person
who will be working on my reel.
After you get your reel serviced, take it to a
local tackle shop and get it respooled by them.
This is also the time to have your rods repaired
if you have some issues with them like
cracked rod tips, burred guides or any other
issues you may have experienced during the
season. Some rods have been used so much
and have had so much exposure to the sun
they may need to be totally refurbished. Now
that you have done these three jobs, your
equipment is ready to go for next season.
Now is the time to do some research also.
During the next couple of months there are numerous
trade shows that are centered on fishing.
Here is a list of some that you can attend
to help you become a better angler. Make it a
People often ask – Do I need a will? No, you don’t
need a will, but you may not like the plan North Carolina
has made for you.
A person who dies without a will is said to have died
“intestate.” Some assets which you may own have
special legal significance and will automatically pass to
designated persons at your death regardless of whether
you have a will. These assets include joint tenancy with
rights of survivorship, tenancy by the entirety property,
retirement plan and IRA proceeds, life insurance proceeds,
payable on death accounts and property held in
trust. To change the person who will inherit these types
of assets at your death, you need to change the way
you hold title to these assets or the beneficiary you have
designated.
All other assets, will comprise your “intestate estate” and
be distributed according to the State’s statutory will provisions.
Most of the time, the terms of the statutory will
are NOT the results that my clients would have selected.
Your spouse will inherit all your intestate estate only if
you do not have any surviving descendants and both of
your parents predecease you. If you have any surviving
descendants at your death, your spouse will inherit
only about one-half to one-third of your intestate estate
(depending on how many descendants survive you). Or,
if you do not have any surviving descendants, but either
of your parents are living, your spouse will inherit only
about one-half of your intestate estate.
If you have any children or other descendants living at
your death, they will share an inheritance of one-third
to one-half (depending on the number of descendants
living) of your intestate estate if your spouse is still living
at your death.
Your parents will not inherit any of your intestate estate if
you have any descendants living at your death. If you do
not have any descendants living at your death, and your
spouse survives you, your parents will take approximately
one-half of your intestate estate. Your parents will
inherit your entire estate if you have neither a surviving
spouse nor surviving descendants.
So, take a married couple (no children) and the husband
has living parents. The couple builds a home on land
given to him by his family. He dies and now his wife
owns a one-half (½) interest in the real property. The
other one-half (½) is owned by his parents.
If you have been living with your significant other for
many years without the benefit of marriage, and you die
- he or she does not inherit from you, if you don’t have a
will.
**North Carolina does not recognize common law marriages.
**
If the statutory will does not produce the results that you
would like, you should prepare your own will – where
you select the persons that will inherit from you and the
proportions that they will receive. If you don’t have a will,
the State of North Carolina will distribute your property at
your death pursuant to the current law.
NATIVE AMERICAN MUSIC
by: Joyce Bornfriend
As we end a holiday season filled with music, have you
ever wondered about the earliest musical instruments?
Some historians maintain that rocks shaped to create
differing sounds and used as drums were the first musical
devices while others consider the flute the oldest melodious
instrument constructed by humans. Native American flutes
made of bone can be traced back thousands of years with
evidence that instruments made from reed and both hard
and soft woods soon followed.
“People sometimes assume that a flute is a flute is a
flute—that once you have heard one, you have more or less
heard what they all sound like,” explained Carl Bornfriend,
Executive Director for the Frisco Native American Museum.
“The flute actually has a wide range of sound with a haunting
beauty that has often been called a portal to take the listener
to the most beautiful places in their heart and mind.”
Even the simplest flute crafted by a native artist has beauty
from the form and design. Other instruments are truly works
of art, designed and created with such elegance that they
are sought after for their decorative value even by those who
have no interest in actually playing them.
Staff at the Frisco Native American Museum & Natural
History Center put out a call for native flute makers and players
to take part in the music and dance festival scheduled for
April 27 & 28, 2019 at the museum. The festival will include
drumming and dancing as well as demonstrations and workshops
on a variety of musical instruments.
Located on Hatteras Island, the museum is open 10:30
AM—5:00 PM Saturdays and Sundays for the winter. The
regular six days a week schedule will resume on April 16,
Celebrate The Versatile Sweet Potato
By Rosie Hawthorne
This month, I’m celebrating the sweet potato – our
official state vegetable. With North Carolina being the
Number 1 sweet potato producing state in the country, this
versatile root vegetable is a fundamental southern food,
finding itself on many a menu throughout the state and
walking the diverse flavor profile line between sweet and
savory.
Today, I have two sweet potato recipes for you – one savory
and one sweet. Please enjoy.
Savory Hasselback Sweet Potatoes
2 sweet potatoes
About ½ stick unsalted butter, softened
Kosher salt
8 oz. ground sausage (Preferably Jimmy Dean’s hot sausage.)
1 Granny Smith apple, cored, peeled, and minced
½ cup grated apple-smoked Gruyère cheese
Prepare the potatoes, Hasselback-style. Hasselback-style
is a Swedish method of preparation in which the potato is
very thinly sliced, accordion-like, without cutting all the way
through the potato. Liberally apply butter to the potato,
on the outside and in between the slices. Sprinkle with
kosher salt.
Bake potatoes in a 350° oven for 50 or so minutes, until
potato is tender. Throughout baking, spoon the melted
butter over the potatoes, gently separating the slices.
While potatoes are baking, cook sausage in a medium
skillet, breaking the pieces into crumbles. Drain on paper
towels. Add minced apple to the sausage.
When potatoes are cooked, add sausage mixture in between
the slices. Top with grated Gruyère cheese and run
under the broiler until cheese is melted and slightly golden
brown.
Sweet Potato In Orange Cups
1 large sweet potato
3 oranges (I prefer Cara Cara oranges which are now
available.)
1 TB unsalted butter
1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 egg, beaten
a few tablespoons cream
2 TB brown sugar
2 TB unsalted butter
½ cup chopped pecans
mini marshmallows
Peel and chop the sweet potato. Cook potato in boiling
salted water until tender. Drain.
Transfer sweet potato pieces to a medium bowl and add in
a tablespoon of unsalted butter.
Mash until butter is melted. With electric mixer, beat in
vanilla, egg, and
a tablespoon of cream at a time until creamy smooth.
Season to taste with kosher salt.
Halve oranges and scoop out the segments. I hold the
orange over the sweet potato mixture to collect any juices
that drip out. Eat the segments.
Scoop the sweet potato mixture into the orange cups.
In a small bowl, mix together 2 TB softened unsalted butter,
2 TB brown sugar,
and ½ cup coarsely chopped pecans. Spoon mixture over
filled orange cups and top with mini marshmallows.
Bake at 325° about 20 minutes until heated through and
marshmallows are melted and lightly browned.
Happy New Year, everybody!
Mix it up- A New Type of Taproom
by James H. Brown
Historically, taprooms differ from breweries in the fact that they
don’t brew their beer. Taprooms carry and sell the beers of
other breweries. Not brewing their beers allows them to have the
capacity to give more beer options. “Mix it up” on shore drive has
taken this idea to another level, offering over 50 beers on tap or in
a bottle. Another revolutionary idea that Mix it up is doing is offering
a full bar! I have had book signings at a lot of tap houses and Mix it
up was the first one to provide the services of a full bar.
Starting as a small venue for people to only pick up mixers that
were not sold at the nearby ABC store, Mix it Up quickly grew into
the full bar that it is today. The taproom has become a mainstay in
the shore drive area and is the talk of the town. Owned by Coleman
and Amberly Ferguson, a pair of local young adults with a heart for
giving back and a love of good beer. It doesn’t get much better than
Chesapeake News
pubcomm@cityofchesapeake.net - (757) 382-6241
Chesapeake’s history dates back much further than 1963
when Norfolk County and the City of South Norfolk
merged to create Chesapeake. The first English settlement
began around 1620 along the banks of the Elizabeth
River. In December 1775, the historic Battle of Great Bridge
played a critical role in the Revolutionary War, just a few
hundred yards from where the Chesapeake Municipal Center
stands today. Shortly after the war, work began on the
Dismal Swamp Canal, an idea first envisioned by George
Washington when he visited in 1763. In the 1800s, the area
recovered quickly from the Civil War thanks to its miles
of riverfront and deep water harbors and the fertile, level
farmland.
In the mid-1900s, the City of South Norfolk and the more
rural Norfolk County found themselves struggling to plan
for the future on their own. City and county officials got
together to approve a merger agreement. In 1962, citizens
of both communities turned out in near-record numbers for
a special election, approved the merger, and selected the
name “Chesapeake” for the new city. On January 2, 1963,
the Chesapeake City Council met for the first time.
During the 1960s and 1970s, the young city began to
Mum Bett fights slavery in Massachusetts
In 1829, Elizabeth Freeman passes away. The woman
better known as “Mum Bett” was the first woman to
be declared free from slavery under the Massachusetts
Constitution of 1780. That document joined the Declaration
of Independence in declaring: “All men are born free
and equal.”
In 1781, with mere months left in the American Revolution,
Mum Bett decided to put those words to the test—in
court. It couldn’t have been easy. Her owner, Colonel
John Ashley, was a powerful judge in Sheffield, Massachusetts.
Interestingly, though, one of Ashley’s own projects may
have prompted Mum Bett into action. Ashley was among
those who worked on a 1773 document known as the
Sheffield Declaration. Did Mum Bett overhear some of
these conversations? Some historians think so.
“Mankind in a state of nature are equal, free, and independent
of each other,” the Sheffield Declaration affirmed,
“and have a right to the undisturbed enjoyment of their
lives, their liberty and property.”
by Tara Ross
Mum Bett was quick on her feet. She intervened,
preventing the blow from hitting its intended target. Mrs.
Ashley struck and injured Mum Bett’s arm instead.
It was the last straw. Mum Bett couldn’t take it anymore.
“Anytime,” Mum Bett later recollected, “anytime while I
was a slave, if one minute’s freedom had been offered
to me, and I had been told I must die at the end of that
minute, I would have taken it—just to stand one minute
on God’s earth a free woman—I would.”
Mum Bett ran away. She sought help from Theodore
Sedgwick, a local attorney whom she may have known
because of his work on the Sheffield Declaration. Sedgwick
agreed to represent both Mum Bett and another
slave by the name of Brom.
The surviving court records are not entirely clear, but
it appears that Mum Bett’s main argument was that
she wasn’t a “legal” servant of Ashley and that any law
enabling him to make such a claim was “annulled by the
new Constitution.”
A jury agreed. Mum Bett was free! She renamed herself Elizabeth
Freeman.
The Ashleys tried to get Mum Bett back as a paid domestic
worker, but Mum Bett refused. Instead, she went to work for
the Sedgwicks. She came to be a much loved member of that
household. In fact, when she passed away in 1829, the family
had her buried in the Sedgwick family plot.
Perhaps the tombstone that they created for her says it best:
“She was born a slave and remained a slave for nearly thirty
years. She could neither read nor write; yet in her own sphere
she had no superior nor equal. She neither wasted time nor
property. She never violated a truth, nor failed to perform a duty.
In every situation of domestic trial she was the most efficient
helper and the tenderest friend. Good mother, farewell!”
On the other hand, maybe an incident involving Mrs.
Ashley pushed Mum Bett over the edge. Reportedly, Mrs.
Ashley flew into a rage and tried to hit a slave named
Lizzie with a hot kitchen shovel. The record is unclear,
but it appears that Lizzie was either Mum Bett’s sister or
daughter.
Tara Ross is a mother, wife, writer, and retired lawyer. She is
the author of The Indispensable Electoral College: How the
Founders’ Plan Saves Our Country from Mob Rule,Enlightened
Democracy: The Case for the Electoral College, co-author of
Under God: George Washington and the Question of Church
and State (with Joseph C. Smith, Jr.), & We Elect A President:
The Story of our Electoral College. She is a constitutionalist,
but with a definite libertarian streak! Stay tuned here for updates
on pretty much anything to do with the Electoral College,
George Washington, & our wonderfully rich American heritage.
In other words, she was claiming that the institution of
slavery was illegal under the new Massachusetts Constitution.
Thus, Mum Bett could not be a “legal” servant of
Ashley, nor could he demand her return.
As Independent Bookstores Make A Comeback, E-Book Sales Take A Dive by: Chloe Anagnos
T
echnology is a wonderful thing: It gives entrepreneurs
and visionaries the tools to transform our lives for the
better. But sometimes, innovations designed to replace
ancient technology don’t quite catch on—at least, not as
expected.
While consumers are increasingly choosing to stream their
entertainments, they seem to be going back to an old-fashioned
artifact—the book—for their reading needs, boosting
the publishing industry. In the meantime, however, declining
e-book sales are beginning to concern the industry.
The Market Speaks
The non-profit trade organization American Booksellers
Association (ABA), which represents independent bookstores,
reports that its membership numbers have been increasing
for the past nine years, meaning more bookstores
are opening across the country. In addition, ABA claims that
sales at these bookstores are also up, rising 5 percent since
2017 alone.
With bookstores in more than 2,400 locations across the
country, hardback and paperback book sales have grown
6.2 and 2.2 percent, respectively. That, along with the fact
ABA’s membership is growing, shows us there’s a real
demand for physical books over their digital version. That’s
particularly true if you observe that e-book sales fell by 3.9
percent this year alone.
Overall, the sales of both paperback and hardback books
generated nearly $4 billion to the publishing and independent
bookstore industry during the first nine months of 2018,
while e-book sales brought in only $770.9 million.
As it is with anything else, the market is clearly speaking,
and it’s shown it favors the tried-and-true print over digital
format, proving that competition is important even when it
comes to demonstrating that not all that is new will automatically
take over. After all, if we hadn’t seen the industry shift
toward e-books, consumers may have not rediscovered their
love for old-fashioned books.
Print vs. Digital: A Return to Decentralized Learning
Despite the obvious growth in the small, independent bookstore
industry, large, corporate, and chain bookstores like
Barnes & Noble are not doing so well. As a matter of fact,
the firm is closing several locations and might even be put
up for sale if things don’t pick up.
While these super bookstores entered the picture to offer
readers a full immersion experience, giving them space to
read and catch up with their friends over coffee all in one
place, it seems the model became too expensive and, over
time, unsustainable.
Small bookstores, on the other hand, have a small overhead,
meaning they don’t have to sell an exorbitant number
of books to cover their fixed costs. It’s clear that, as they
thrive in a market that is devouring the large, corporate-run
bookstores, the industry is experiencing a new moment, one
marked by a return to a more decentralized approach to
shopping.
With the internet making everything so accessible, we
have seen a revolution in how people learn. From online
college education to free university courses and widespread
access to PDF book copies, people have turned their back
to large, real-world conglomerates, favoring a more customized
experience.
Perhaps the return to
the neighborhood bookstore
is an extension of
this movement, making
the book shopping experience
less about having
all options laid out right
before your eyes to
make it more intimate
and, yes, even simpler.
It’s All about Human Action
The Observer pointed out that the fact digital book technology
made reading so convenient is precisely why small
bookstores have gained so much traction. With everything
in our lives going digital, the simple joy of reading a physical
book has become a novelty once again.
“Book lovers are reading these big scary headlines about
the death of the book industry,” Katie Presley, an indie Upshur
Street Books shopper, told MarketWatch, “and they’re
motivated to put their dollars into an industry and an art form
that they love and want to keep around.”
It’s almost as if the competition provided by the invention
of the e-book made consumers look at real books a little
differently, adding more value to the traditional format.
While it’s difficult to argue against the convenience of
e-books, it’s also easy to see why shopping for physical
books makes so many of us happy. Perhaps that is the
lesson behind the triumphant comeback of independent
bookstores: economics is all about human action, and trying
to pin it down or dictate it by law will always backfire.
A new year, a new you
(BPT) - Jan. 1 marks the official start of the new year and
is our annual reminder to set resolutions, such as eating
healthier, practicing mindfulness, getting organized or finally
joining a gym. It’s the perfect excuse to hit the reset button
to lead a healthier lifestyle.
Whether that’s waking up to a glass of celery juice - the
go-to drink of 2018 - or taking a spin class, the challenge in
getting healthier involves finding a solution that aligns with
your everyday lifestyle and personal goals. Every individual’s
journey is different. Resolving to lose weight on Jan. 1 is
the easy part. Sticking with it requires more effort.
What if you could start a weight loss journey that was sustainable?
One that helps you build the habits that will carry
you through Dec. 31, 2019, and beyond?
Let’s get personal
Effective weight loss programs must be highly personalized.
Personalization plays a critical role in weight management,
serving as the connective tissue between a program and
the individual. Inputting height, weight, age and gender into
an app or database cannot sustain a successful weight loss
experience. Tracking your progress, consistent feedback,
personalized coaching and motivational communications
are key. These are made possible thanks to advancements
in technology; which when combined with personalization
can positively impact weight loss behaviors and yield real
results.
Finding the right program for you
Losing weight is not one-size-fits-all, hence the importance
of finding a program that is right for your body, mind and
schedule. Experts advise seeking programs rooted in sustainability,
personalization and ease of use. Developed in
collaboration with Louisiana State University’s Pennington
Biomedical Research Center, a worldwide leader in weight
loss science, Amway’s BodyKey(TM) SmartLoss(TM) program
makes it easier to embrace smarter, healthier lifestyle
choices.
Accessibility is also important. The BodyKey SmartLoss
program includes a free mobile app that functions as your
digital coach to help you achieve and share your success
with family, friends and colleagues along your weight loss
journey. The app is available for anyone to download on the
iTunes Store and Google Play.
Marrying the use of technology and biological processes,
the program features three key elements:
* Personalized eating plan: an easy-to-follow eating plan to
educate on appropriate portion size
* Personalized SmartLoss Graph: to map and track healthy
weight loss
* SmartTips and SmartLoss Feedback: continual and
tailored recommendations to keep users motivated to lose
weight
“Personalization is invaluable for any successful weight loss
program,” said Kerry Grann, Principal Research Scientist,
Amway Research & Development. “Each person is unique
and requires different specificities to lose weight. What may
be beneficial to one person, may not work for another. Finding
a solution based on your individual needs will help you
lose weight more efficiently.”
Breaking barriers
With no tracking or calorie counting required, Amway’s BodyKey
SmartLoss program effectively drives weight loss by
including scientifically proven strategies to help shift away
from unhealthy habits that prevent you from losing weight. It
is also personalized to help identify potential barriers such
as mindset, sleep, stress and eating habits, and teaches
new skills to overcome those barriers.
“Creating healthy habits such as weighing yourself daily
and replacing one meal a day with a nutrient-packed shake
or bar can lead to long-term success in managing weight,”
Grann continued. “These habits ensure daily allowances are
properly met and that you receive the nutrients your body
needs to lose weight.”
In addition to meal replacement shakes and bars, Amway’s
BodyKey SmartLoss program also offers tools, snacks and
teas to help make portion control easier.
As we approach a new year, now is the time to evaluate
your physical, mental and spiritual health. Managing your
weight doesn’t have to be a lifelong struggle. Proper weight
management can be safely achieved through programs
such as BodyKey SmartLoss. This program, combined with
a proper education on the tools and nutrients your body benefits
from, can enable you to reap rewards in no time.
If Microsoft had never existed...
The industry would probably be
very fragmented.
Northeast North Carolina Family History – these are a few of my favorite (and new) things...
By: Irene Hampton - nencfamilyhistory@gmail.com
As the new year was hovering in the future I couldn’t
help but think about some of the past year’s new experiences.
Our move to Currituck provided a number of them.
Some were very recent. When our kids came home in
mid-December to celebrate Christmas early, we were able
to attend the 115th anniversary of the Wright Brothers first
flight. We had never attended as a family and it was great
to see all the information about the brothers’ family that
has been added. Our oldest son said this was his favorite
experience.
Our daughter-in-law’s favorite for this trip was seeing the
Christmas lights at the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo.
That was a first experience for all of us. The lights in the
trees that made it seem like thousands of multi-colored fireflies
were dancing around, were admittedly pretty impressive.
There was just enough chill in the air in the evening
to make it feel very seasonal! You can still see them on
Fridays or Saturdays through January 19th, from 6 to 9 pm.
Check out their website https://www.elizabethangardens.
org/winterlights-obx
If the weather held out, I wanted to climb Jockey’s Ridge
to see the sunset, something none of us had ever done.
We were able to take a number of family pictures, get our
daily cardio in and watch the more energetic members race
each other over the dunes. It was pretty brisk so I was
surprised when our brave daughter-in-law had our son take
a video of her rolling down a very chilly dune. There were
a few other brave souls out there but everyone pretty much
had their own dune!
Two summers ago, when Shelly Island was briefly in
existence, we went there to pick up shells and I found out I
Simple health tips for busy moms
LOVE that activity. Last year our kids visited in early January
and we spent a couple of happy hours picking up shells
there on the one day it hit the 50’s. For Christmas this year
my husband bought me a bag for collecting shells - never
knew such a thing existed. With no Shelly Island, we tried
a few spots before finding quite a nice cache of shells at the
National Seashore. Back in the fall we got up early to be in
Carova at sunrise so we could be among the first looking for
shells and not a one was in sight. It seems that whenever
there is a storm that would bring lots of shells on shore we
are working and can’t get there so I was glad to find a large
collection again.
I’ve really enjoyed learning new things at work, from
learning the Ghost Tour for the summers to Christmas
traditions from the 1920’s and how they came to be for
the Candlelight Christmas tours at Whalehead. And I am
always learning new things about the area, some for fun
and some for necessity. I think our favorite food discovery
has been the pizza at Barefoot Bernie’s. I can honestly say
I have never had pizza that was as good reheated as when
it first comes out of the oven, until eating theirs. That was a
family consensus not just mine.
My top favorite thing for the year is not new - spending
time with family and friends. I listened to a Christmas special
with Hugh Bonneville, the father on Downton Abbey and
the Paddington Bear movies. A comment he made has hit
home and is something I want to remember to do. He said
that at Christmas when his family and friends get together
they “raise a glass” in memory of those who are no longer
with them and share memories about them to include them
in their holiday gathering. I’m sorry I haven’t made a habit
of this in the past, but I will do it in the future. Our kids had
already left but in phone conversations I made a point to
share some memories of my mom that they had not heard.
Our son shared that his wife’s mother had fled Nazi
Germany as a young child with her mother and siblings
after their father abandoned them. She had written her
memories and given a copy to all her grandchildren. So my
challenge to you and myself is to do better sharing memories
good and bad. Let’s keep family members alive in
more than just our hearts by sharing their stories in the new
year.
(BPT) - Mothers are the CEO of the home. Organizing
schedules, paying the bills, doing food shopping, managing
pick-ups and drop-offs, and making sure everyone is healthy
is just part of the job. Unfortunately, because they are so
busy taking care of others, many moms often put off taking
care of themselves or scheduling their own health appointments.
Making your health a priority can help you stay healthy and
keep illnesses at bay. Here are a few tips to help:
Sleep consistency
You harp on the kids about the importance of a good night’s
sleep, but when it comes to your own sleep, it’s often the
first thing that’s sacrificed. Sleep deprivation is common
among moms for a variety of reasons. Make it a priority
to get 7 or 8 hours of quality rest each night. Keeping the
bedroom quiet, cool, dark and free from the distractions of
devices such as cell phones and tablets can help you relax
and sleep.
Annual physicals
Just like with your kids, proactively seeing a doctor every
year can help you tackle health issues head on rather than
putting them off until they become a bigger problem. During
wellness visits, your doctor will use health indicators like
weight, blood pressure and heart rate to screen for common
conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Doctors can
then recommend treatments to help you stay healthy and
feel your best.
Fill prescriptions
Your doctor’s treatment plan may include a prescription
medication. Doctors advise that it’s important to fill and use
the medication as prescribed. If you are not insured, or if
your health insurance plan doesn’t cover the medication you
were prescribed, you can check a free prescription savings
program called Inside Rx which can help save an average
of 40 percent off brand-name and 80 percent off retail on
generic medications. Eligibility requirements and a complete
list of the medications offered through the program can be
found at InsideRx.com.
Boost nutrition
You meticulously pack your kids’ lunches, but when it comes
to your own, sometimes you eat whatever you can grab.
Eating well helps fuel the body and mind, so skip the junk
and instead eat wholesome meals three times a day with
healthy snacks in between. Stock the fridge and pantry with
healthy foods that are easy to eat on the go and always
have nutrient-packed snacks, such as dried fruit or nuts.
Meal planning can help everyone enjoy healthy homemade
foods throughout the week.
These simple tips will help you prioritize health as you take
care of your family, so you can feel your best today and in
the future!
Roth vs. Traditional 401(k): Which Is Right
For You?
For many years, employees of companies that offered 401(k) plans only
faced a couple of key decisions – how much to contribute and how to
allocate their dollars among the various investment options in their plan.
But in recent years, a third choice has emerged: the traditional versus Roth
401(k). Which is right for you?
To begin with, you need to understand the key difference between the
two types of 401(k) plans. When you invest in a traditional 401(k), you
put in pre-tax dollars, so the more you contribute, the lower your taxable
income. Your contributions and earnings grow tax-deferred until you begin
taking withdrawals, which will be taxed at your ordinary tax rate. With a
Roth 401(k), the situation is essentially reversed. You contribute after-tax
dollars, so you won’t lower your taxable income, but withdrawals of contributions
and earnings are tax-free at age 59½, as long as you’ve held the
account at least five years.
So, now that you’ve got the basics of the two types of 401(k) plans,
which should you choose? There’s no one right answer for everyone. You
essentially need to ask yourself these questions: When do you want to pay
taxes? And what will your tax rate be in the future?
If you’re just starting out in your career, and you’re in a relatively low
income tax bracket, but you think you might be in a higher one when you
retire, you might want to consider the Roth 401(k). You’ll be paying taxes
now on the money you earn and contribute to your Roth account, but you’ll
avoid being taxed at the higher rate when you start taking withdrawals.
Conversely, if you think your tax rate will be lower when you retire, you
might be more inclined to go with the traditional 401(k), which allows you to
avoid paying taxes on your contributions now, when your tax rate is high.
Of course, you can see the obvious problem with these choices – specifically,
how can you know with any certainty if your tax bracket will be lower
or higher when you retire? Many people automatically assume that once
they stop working, their tax liabilities will drop, but that’s not always the
case. Given their sources of retirement income from investment accounts
and Social Security, many people see no drop in their tax bracket once
they retire.
Since you can’t see into the future, your best move might be to split the
difference, so to speak. Although not all businesses offer the Roth 401(k)
option, many of those that do will allow employees to divide their contributions
between the Roth and traditional accounts. If you chose this route,
you could enjoy the benefits of both, but you still can’t exceed the total
annual 401(k) contribution limit, which for 2019 is $19,000, or $25,000 if
you’re 50 or older.
You may want to consult with your tax advisor before making any decisions
about a Roth or traditional 401(k) – or Roth and traditional 401(k)
– but in the final analysis, these are positive choices to make, because a
401(k), in whatever form, is a great way to save for retirement.
Try to take full advantage of it.
New Life of Currituck
have often said at the end of a year and the beginning of a
I new one that I don’t really think to much of new year’s resolutions.
Any time of the year is a good time to take the time to
reflect and adjust things in your life for your health and wellbeing.
Yet the end of this year has brought its challenges as two
dear friends of ours passed away. It is difficult to see friends and
loved ones pass at a time that is to be filled with joy and peace.
My mind has flashed back 32 years ago at the passing of my
grandfather whose birthday was December 25th. My grandfather
seemed to see things in me that maybe I did not even see, or my
parents did not see. Always the encourager even through failure
he would find a way and words to make things better. In 1986
Grandpa found out he had lung cancer he chose a quality of life
over treatment at the time. Within a year he started to weaken
and could no longer care for himself. My parents moved him into
their house for care and that became overwhelming at times. So,
we as grandchildren would come in and help at night to give Dad
and Mom some rest. The thought was scary to me whether it was
the reality of facing death or being uncomfortable with the responsibility
of care I don’t know but you just did it anyway despite the
fear. Being with Grandpa was not unusual I had worked beside
him on the farm my whole life and for the last nine years of my
marriage he often would walk to my house on Sunday afternoon
to talk either interrupting me working on my cars or watching a
football game.
One night as I was sitting with him, he could not sleep so we
began to talk. He asked me what my dreams were for my life,
I quickly answered with some things I wanted to do. Grandpa
listened carefully and quietly as always, it was dark, so I could not
see his facial expressions. I stopped for a moment trying to think
of something else to say and without hesitate he replied. Daniel
the most important thing in life is a relationship with Jesus Christ
....
by Pastor Dan Bergey
and your family. Yea I know Grandpa and with that we both dozed
off to sleep. Two nights later I received a call saying Grandpa
had passed away. Two weeks after the funeral one night I could
not sleep with the last words of Grandpa ringing in my head, that
night in the darkness of my room I made a choice to believe in
those last words he had spoken to me. God has granted me the
power through His Holy Spirit to restore the strained relationship
with my parents, to see my children and grandchildren love Jesus
like I do, and to serve the Church here in the States and other
parts of the world. All because of a loving Grandpa who saw more
in me then I saw in myself. This year I saw my children taking
care of and loving on those families who lost dear ones and I
could not help but be thankful for the legacy that was passed on
to me. Now is the time to start a legacy of your own, I pray that
you will. “But Jesus said, “The things that are impossible with
people are possible with God.” Luke 18:27
What differentiates MOAA from other military organizations
is its emphasis on networking and education for
a successful transition after the military. In addition, the
chapter is family-oriented.
One of its objectives is to engage with spouses who
may be seeking career, business, and reciprocal licensing
Lee-Jackson Day - Jan. 18, 2018
By Dr. Dave
Sons of Confederate Veterans
We meet at Vickie’s Villa in
Elizabeth City the 4th Tuesday
every month at 7pm
Lee-Jackson Day is a day set aside since January 19, 1904 to
commemorate two of the south’s greatest leaders, Robert E.
Lee and Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson on January 12, 2018
and the whole 4-day weekend. The celebration began to honor
the birthday of Robert E. Lee on January 19, 1889 and Stonewall
Jackson’s remembrance was added to the holiday in 1904.
Robert E. Lee was from Stafford West Moreland County in Virginia.
His father, Henry Hall Lee was Light Horse Henry Lee who
was a cavalry leader during the Revolution War. Robert was born
in 1807 and passed in 1870. Known as the Marble Man, Robert
E. Lee was the leading confederate General during the war of
Northern Aggression. Offered the position of total Commanding
General of all Yankee troops he refused it to stay with his native
state of Virginia. Lee out witted and out fought every Yankee
general put up against him but eventually had to give in to the
Yankee atrocities of the actions of attrition and the overwhelming
numbers. After the war he was named President of Washington
College. Robert E. Lee passed on as one of the greatest soldier
and General of his time had a stroke that took his life in 1870.
Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson was born January 21,
1824 in Clarksburg, Virginia (which later became West Virginia).
He graduated from West Point in 1846 where he first met Robert
E. Lee during the Mexican-American War where Jackson was a
second Lieutenant and later promoted to Major. In 1851 Jackson
resigned his military commission and accepted a teaching
position at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA. As professor
of natural and experimental philosophy (Theology) and instructor
of artillery.
At the outbreak of the War of Northern Aggression Jackson
accepted orders as a Colonel of Virginia Militia and then was
promoted to Brigadier General and led troops to the epic battle
of “Stonewall”. This was in 1861 and his charge saved the day
and sent the Yankees to running with their tails between their
legs all the way back to Washington D.C. This brought on another
promotion for Jackson to Major General. He was dispatched to
the Shenandoah Valley and then to Chancellorsville, VA where he
out flanked the Yankee army and again got them fleeing like rats.
That same night of May 2, 1863 Jackson was shot and passed
away on May 10th.
So fly your flags and banners high on January 18-21, 2018 in
honor of these great men.
5 tips for avoiding the cold & flu this year
(BPT) - Last year we experienced an unprecedented cold
and flu season. The CDC reported an early flu season and
much higher than expected rates of hospitalizations for the
flu. It is never too early to start preparing your home and
workplace to prevent the spread of this viral and infectious,
but also life-threatening, illness. These tips can help prevent
you and your family from catching the virus.
Disinfect
Flu-related viruses can live outside the body for a long period
of time, which is why it’s important to disinfect surfaces in
your home and workplace. Germs are everywhere and disinfecting
works by using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces or
objects. This will decrease the spread of germs and subsequently
reduce the risk of infection. The CDC suggests daily
sanitizing surfaces and objects that are touched often, such
as desks, countertops, doorknobs, computer keyboards,
hands-on learning items, faucet handles, phones and toys.
Wash your hands
The flu is a very contagious disease so it’s important to stop
the spread of the related viruses. Washing your hands can
help limit the spread by killing some of the viruses and thus
decreasing your risk for infection. Wash them with warm
water and soap for 60 seconds or longer as your best way to
avoid germs. Make it a habit to wash your hands regularly at
work and at home.
Eat healthy foods
Keeping nutritious food at your home and workplace and
eating balanced meals can strengthen your immune system.
With a healthier immune system, you will be better equipped
to fight off infections and actually decrease the risk of getting
sick. Eating balanced meals and a diet rich in fruits and vegetables
can strengthen your immune system and help you
avoid the risk of catching the flu.
Get vaccinated
Getting vaccinated will overwhelmingly decrease the risk of
getting the flu this cold and flu season, thus keeping your
home and workplace safer environments in general. It’s the
best defense against the flu, and getting it early can help
decrease the chance of you getting sick. According to the
CDC, it’s best to get vaccinated before flu begins spreading
in your community. The flu vaccine takes at least two weeks
to become fully effective, so getting the shot early is highly
recommended.
Avoid the waiting room
Crowded waiting rooms can expose you to other people’s
germs along with spreading yours. To avoid these spaces
and get the treatment you or your dependents need, consider
using a telemedicine service to avoid the waiting room
altogether this flu season.
One virtual care provider is Doctor On Demand, which has
board-certified physicians available around the clock. The
average wait time to see a Doctor On Demand physician is
typically less than five minutes, compared to the three-week
national average wait time to see a primary care physician.
Through video technology, physicians can diagnose and,
if needed, prescribe medicine through the convenience of
your mobile device, tablet or desktop computer. To access,
download the free app (iTunes or Google Play) or create
an account on the website. The service is covered by many
insurance plans and employers. Enter your insurance information
to find out your co-pay.
Mexican Cheese is Hot Right Now: A Queso Primer
(BPT) - Queso, anyone? With tortillas outselling hamburger
and hot dog buns while salsa dethrones ketchup, Mexican
food is more popular than ever in the United States - and
cheeses are a key component of America’s favorite Mexican
dishes. But are all cheeses created equally? Queso is not
just that ubiquitous, neon cheese sauce you might sometimes
see in the grocery store. In Spanish, the word simply
means cheese, and Hispanic cheeses rival anything else
you might see in the supermarket aisles, with a wide range
of flavor profiles to tempt any palate.
Cacique, the number one brand of Hispanic cheeses, chorizos
and cremas, wants to give quesos like Queso Fresco,
Panela, Oaxaca and Cotija their day in the sun. Just like
Mexican cuisine, Hispanic cheeses have great crossover appeal.
James Beard-winning restaurateur, MasterChef judge
and proud Mexican-American Chef Aarón Sánchez agrees.
“American cooks may not be as familiar with Hispanic
cheeses as they are with others at the grocery store,”
Sánchez says. “The names might come across as intimidating,
and they may not be sure of how to incorporate
these cheeses into their cooking routine. But there’s really
no mystery. Hispanic cheeses can be used for a wide range
of dishes in your everyday routine, and not just Mexican
classics.”
Here’s a primer in Queso 101.
Queso Fresco, one of the most widely used cheeses in
Mexican cooking, is a soft, fresh cheese similar in flavor and
texture to ricotta, but with more savory, milky notes. Mexican
cooks use it to top or stuff dishes like tacos, empanadas and
enchiladas. But you don’t need to limit it to Mexican cuisine.
Crumble it on hot dogs, sprinkle it on soups and chowders,
or make a Mexi-grilled cheese with queso fresco and green
chiles.
Panela has a mild and creamy flavor, and is a crumbly, curdstyle
basket cheese - similar to a cross between paneer
and halloumi, but less salty. This cheese is great for baking,
grilling or frying. Fry a slice of panela cheese in a pan to
achieve a perfectly seared snack with a gooey, delicious
inside. Or, make a baked dip! Cover the cheese with roasted
salsa, then bake it in a 375-degree oven for 20 minutes.
Enjoy with chips or bread.
Cotija, named after the town where it originated, is like Parmesan
and dry feta but creamier, with a savory flavor and
crumbly texture. Use it just like you’d use Parmesan. Crumble
it on salads, top pasta dishes with it, or even substitute
Cotija for Parm in Fettuccine Alfredo, adding a dash of chili
powder or chipotle for a little Mexican-inspired zing.
Oaxaca has a mellow, earthy flavor and buttery texture,
similar to mozzarella, with a superior melt. Use it just like
you’d use its Italian cousin, including pizza, lasagna, melting
on sandwiches or snacking.
Manchego has a nutty, earthy flavor and creamy texture.
Similar to Colby in tanginess and cheddar in aroma, Manchego
will be the star of your cheese board. Or bake it into
a frittata, shred it for mac and cheese, or use it anywhere
you’d use cheddar.
Eager to try some of these cheeses? Cacique’s website
has a store locator. Type in your zip code and you’ll find a
store near you that carries them. And then you’ll be on your
way to adding the flavors of Mexico to tonight’s dinner. And
if you’re looking for a place to start, check out this delicious
Cotija Crusted Quesadilla recipe.
that aid these survivors,” said President of The Mary Kay
Foundation Board of Directors Michael Lunceford. “At
the heart of The Foundation’s work is the shelter grant
program which is actively supported by our independent
sales force. We’re proud that our commitment makes
such a powerful impact in local communities and in the
lives of domestic violence survivors across the country.”
According to the National Network to End Domestic Violence,
more than 72,000 adult and child victims receive
domestic violence services across the United States in
just one day. Unfortunately, in the same period of time,
more than 11,000 requests for services are unmet due to
a lack of resources.
The purpose of Hyde County Hotline, Inc. is to work
to eliminate domestic abuse and sexual victimization
and provide safe shelter in Hyde County, North Carolina
through the collaborative efforts of a compassionate
community. We promote dignity, respect and safety at
home resulting in safer communities. In addition to safe
shelter Hyde County Hotline provides crisis intervention,
advocacy, safety planning, court advocacy, financial
planning, assistance in obtaining further education &
referrals to counseling for survivors of domestic violence
and sexual assault.
The need for shelter services in Hyde County is
tremendous! Between January 1, 2018 and November
30, 2018 Hyde County Hotline served 126 victims of
domestic violence in person and received 584 domestic
violence related crisis calls and served 84 victims of sexual
assault in person and received 601 sexual assault
related crisis calls. (Total number of crisis calls received
may reflect multiple calls from one victim.)
Hyde County Hotline is very blessed to have received
this generous grant of $20,000.00 from the Mary Kay
Foundation and we are very grateful. Our agency continues
to provide compassionate services to all victims
of domestic violence and sexual assault in Hyde County.
The challenges we face are unique to the geographical
isolation and distressed economy of our area and grants
such as the one we have received from the Mary Kay
Foundation are critically important to our ability to assist
victims. – Kathryn Ballance, Executive Director of Hyde
County Hotline
The truth behind food labels
Behind the label: Decoding certifications in the shopping aisle
(BPT) - When we visit the grocery store, we’ve become
accustomed to a dizzying array of options. There are
labels touting everything from food safety to environmental
and ethical standards. Making the best decision
for your family, your health and the good of the planet is
important, but how can you possibly keep track of what
all these labels really mean?
Voting with your wallet
Today’s wired world allows us to be more conscious of
the impacts of our choices than ever before. Shopping
isn’t just about putting food on the table. It’s a daily opportunity
to support the kind of world we want to live in.
Our actions and what we choose to buy can impact not
only the planet’s future, but our social economy as well.
A 2017 study by Cone Communications reported that
60 percent of Americans believe businesses can be key
drivers for social and environmental change. Whether
it’s phasing out plastic bags and straws or carrying more
ethically traded products, businesses are showing consumers
that they are listening.
Businesses aren’t doing this just because you asked;
they’re doing it because it’s the right thing. Many of them
are putting their values on full display in the form of labels
that make it easier for you to navigate the shopping
aisle.
“As shoppers we are often in a hurry, so much so that
we might not even be aware of how quickly we make
a decision. That’s where clear labeling can help,” said
Rebecca Walker Reczek, professor of marketing at Ohio
State University. “Without it you’d need to research each
product and the time can add up.”
The truth behind the labels
So what gives? Are organic and natural the same thing?
Does a green label mean it’s better for the environment?
What does “fair trade” really mean? These are just some
of the questions many consumers are asking when they
make their way down the grocery aisle.
Most of us are aware of those little labels on our food,
but we often don’t understand what they mean. Like any
choice, the key is education. To shop in accordance with
our values, we must understand what the label stands for
and how it’s been verified. And yes - verification matters.
Marketing savvy and great design can create convincing
packaging and badges that represent a company’s promise,
but often they aren’t based on rigorous standards.
On the other hand, certification labels mean that an
independent organization has audited and checked that a
company is following a standard set of rules - whether it’s
fair trade, responsible fishing, GMO avoidance or better
treatment of workers.
For example, the USDA organic label means that an
independent organization has audited the farmer to make
sure they abide by national organic standards. On the
other hand, the term ‘natural’ has no set definition or
standards. Neither the FDA nor the USDA has set rules
for this term. Pure, natural, green, direct trade - all these
terms conjure an image, but are not audited and don’t
refer to any established standard. Essentially, they are
just words.
A guide to the goods
Everyone has a right to know what is in their food and
where it comes from. Look to these certifications to guide
your next shopping trip:
* Fairtrade - The Fairtrade certification ensures safe and
fair working conditions, prohibits child labor and provides
farmers and workers with a fairer price or better wages.
Fairtrade products originate in developing and least developed
countries where farmers and workers are often
marginalized.
Where found: Coffee, chocolate, bananas, sugar, avocados,
tea and more
* MSC Certified - By choosing seafood with the MSC
blue fish label you are supporting independently certified
sustainable fisheries. Their good management practices
help ensure fish stocks and habitats are healthy and
fishing community livelihoods are secure.
Where found: Wild caught fish and seafood, fish oil supplements,
pet food
* Responsibly Grown, Farmworker Assured - The
EFI-certified label indicates that the workers who harvested
your food are treated with respect, compensated fairly
and engaged to identify problems that impact the safety
of your food.
Where found: Fresh fruits and vegetables
* Non-GMO Project Verified - The Non-GMO Project
Standard is North America’s most rigorous and reliable
standard for GMO avoidance, set apart by its transparency,
trustworthiness, ongoing testing and third-party
status. The best way to avoid consuming GMOs is to
look for the butterfly.
Where found: Dairy and meat products, fruit and vegetables,
snack foods, vitamins and supplements, oils and
more
Food is a basic necessity, but it is also a conscious
choice shaped by our values and our lifestyle. Shop your
values on your next shopping trip. To learn more about
these certifications and continue the conversation, visit
