Ban the wipe
Quick and convenient they may be, but good for your skin
and the environment they definitely are not. “Face wipes
are not an effective way of cleansing the skin,” says beauty
expert Alison Young (alisonyoungbeauty.com). “Wipes
don’t absorb much and leave dirt and grime sat on the
surface of your skin. To properly cleanse with a wipe, you
have to use quite a bit of pressure, which can scratch and
pull at your skin exacerbating fine lines and wrinkles and
risking sensitivity.”
A cleanser that dissolves make-up
such as Garnier’s Micellar Cleansing
Water (£4.99/400ml) is a much
better choice.
Safeguard your skin
Most of us are pretty good at
protecting our skin from the
sun in the summer, but to fight
off wrinkles and pigmentation
we should be protecting it all
year round. “We’re at risk from
damage from UVA and UVB rays
whenever there is daylight, not
just sunlight,” explains Alison.
“Pigmentation often appears
in March as daylight begins
to increase in January and
February, but if you’re using a
SPF daily you can avoid extra
pigmentation showing up
in spring.”
Try Clinique’s City
Block Sheer SPF
25, (£19/40ml),
which provides
broad-spectrum
UVA and UVB
sun protection
in a lightweight,
oil-absorbing
formula. Apply
after your
skincare before
make-up.
Clean up your act
“Cleaning your make-up brushes regularly is important,
not only because bacteria can build up, but also for
the sake of your make-up,” says Alison. “If you’re not
regularly cleaning your brushes, they will be saturated
with product and will leave your make-up looking
heavy and patchy.” Don’t bother with special brush
cleansers, though – your usual face wash or a
cheap baby shampoo will do the job just fine.”
