PLAYOFF RIVALS CONTINUE TO SEE ROSTER CHANGES
KINGSTON AND BARRIE HAVE BOTH MADE MOVES SINCE LAST MEETING
T
he first time the Barrie Colts stopped in Kingston
this season both teams looked significantly different
than when they met in the playoffs last season.
For their final visit of the season, both teams look significantly
different than they did in their first visit. Both
teams have been active in the trade market moving
high profile players to acquire future draft picks.
On December 9, Barrie moved Justin Murray to
Saginaw for Ryan Stepien and a fifth round pick in
2020. That same day they traded Stepien to Kitchener
for Jack York. Their big move came just days
ago when they traded Joey Keane to London for Dalton
Duhart, a second round pick in 2020 and 2024,
and a third round pick in 2023. The Colts still have
some players that may be moved before the deadline
including Lucas Chiodo, Ben Hawerchuk and Jason
Willms. They could also elect to hang on to these veterans
to help develop their younger players for the
remainder of the season.
The Frontenacs haven’t made as many moves
as the Colts, but the one move they did make made
waves. Jason Robertson and Jacob Paquette were
sent to the Niagara IceDogs in exchange for Billy Constantinou,
Ian Martin and 11 draft picks. It allowed
Kingston to recover some picks they traded away last
season when they made a run to the Eastern Conference
Final. It also added two young roster players that
can play in the league now.
The Colts took the previous match up at Leon’s
Centre earlier this season by a score of 4-2. Kingston
has yet to visit Barrie in the 2018-19 season. After
scoring six goals on December 28 against Peterborough,
the Frontenacs went into a bit of a scoring
drought heading into this weekend. They scored just
3 goals in their next three games. They will look to
reverse that trend today. KF

Kingston fans probably weren’t familiar with
Dawson Baker when he was traded here from
the Sudbury Wolves, but Baker was certainly
familiar with the area. It didn’t take long for our fans
to become a fan of the Cobourg, ON native. His hard
working, hard hitting gameplay always earns him
fans very quickly.
Baker played minor hockey for the Quinte Red
Devils during the 2015-16 season. He put up 37
the Kingston Frontenacs acquired Dawson Baker
from the Wolves in exchange for a fifth round
pick and a conditional sixth round pick. Baker
immediately made an impression as a hard working
player that can contribute on the scoresheet and
make the opposition nervous with his physical
game. He also made it clear that when a teammate
needed support, he would be the first one there.
He currently has four goals and four assists in 32
points in 33 games while also being a physical force
on the ice. He racked up 72 PIM over the course
of that season. His solid season set him up to be
selected in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection.
The Sudbury Wolves were the team that called
his name on draft day. They selected him with the
64th overall pick of the 2016 draft. He played 10
games in his first season with Sudbury, but spent
most of the year with the Trenton Golden Hawks
playing against the Frontenacs affiliate, the Kingston
Voyageurs. Baker and the Golden Hawks had a
very impressive run that season making it as far as
Canada’s National Championship, the RBC Cup.
Baker joined the Sudbury Wolves full time for the
following season. In 61 games he recorded 6 goals
and 7 assists for 13 points. His physical play earned
him 54 penalty minutes. The Wolves struggled and
finished in last place in the OHL. Baker was likely
expecting to put in a hard working offseason and
return to Sudbury the following year, but that isn’t
the way it worked out.
During training camp for the 2018-19 season,

With a player like Ryan Cranford moving on at
the end of the season, Dawson Baker will likely take
his spot as a spark plug for the Frontenacs moving
forward. At 18 years old, he is eligible to play in the
OHL for another two seasons following this one. KF

After a 15 year pro career, including 10 in the NHL, Kurtis Foster started his coaching career with the Peterborough Petes.
After a season as an Assistant Coach with the Petes, he made the move to Kingston to be an Assistant Coach to Jay
Varady. Kurtis was promoted to Head Coach for the 2018-19 season after Varady was hired by the Tucson Roadrunners
of the AHL.
Luca Caputi played 8 years of pro hockey and immediately joined the coaching ranks following his playing career, as an Assistant
Coach with the Guelph Storm for the 2015-16 season. After three season in Guelph, he made the move to Kingston and was
named Associate Coach of the Frontenacs this past July.
Phil Mangan played in the OHL for the Ottawa 67’s and Kingston Frontenacs before moving to the QMJHL in 2006 to join the
Moncton Wildcats. He finished his junior career with the St John’s Fog Devils. After a number of seasons in the ECHL, Mangan
joined the Kingston Frontenacs as an Assistant Coach for the 2016-17 season.
