A welcome from the editor
Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to Woodhorn Lane for our final home
EBAC Northern League Division One game of 2018 against Sunderland RCA.
We would like to extend a very warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of
Sunderland RCA, and hope they have a safe journey home after the match.
2018 has had some highs and lows for the Colliers, and today we are once again looking for
our first win since our trip to Nelson FC in the FA Vase back on the 16th October.
With the resignations of Team Northumbria and Blyth AFC, after today, we have only 16
matches left between Christmas and the 13th April when the season draws to a close, but that
is still plenty of time to pick up some points to add to the 18 we already have, a few wins can
easily see us climb a number of places in the table.
At the other end of the table Dunston UTS or Consett will be going into Christmas with the
bragging rights, both on 44 points at the top, but with Dunston ahead on goal difference and
with two games in hand over their title rivals. At the end of the season, one club must be
promoted to Step 4 in the National League System, and at this time, it seems unlikely to be
anyone apart from these two.
Last Saturday saw just a handful of games across the two divisions of the Northern League,
with many games falling foul of Storm Deidre, causing another headache for the League
Secretary in needing to move fixtures around again for clubs, some of whom (including
ourselves) hadn’t been affected directly by the postponements - I don’t envy his job at times!
Back to today, and while Ashington have lost 3 and drawn 2 of their last 5 league games, the
performances by the team have been outstanding, and they have been unlucky not to pick up a
few more points. Our opponents, Sunderland RCA have not faired much better, and despite
being 7th in the table, have only picked up 1 win and 2 draws in the last 5 games too. It’s all to
play for today at the Lane.
Tonight, we also have our Christmas Party in the club, there is an open invite for everyone, and
it would be great to celebrate the year with you if you are able to make it.
Have a very Merry Christmas, and we’ll see you again in 2019, with our first home game being
on 5th January against North Shields
Enjoy the Game
Ashington AFC: History
Mention Ashington to any football follower and the chances are they will have
heard of the birthplace of World Cup winning brothers Bobby and Jackie
Charlton. Jackie Milburn, a legend at Newcastle United also played for the
town’s team, known unsurprisingly as the Colliers.
Ashington AFC was formed in 1883 making it one of the oldest Clubs in
Northumberland. Despite its minor status it entered the FA Cup as early as
1887. After joining the Northern Alliance in 1892, the club soon switched to
the East Northumberland League where it remained until 1902 when it
returned to the Northern Alliance. The Colliers played in this league until
1914, winning the League Title in 1913/14, as well as the Northumberland
Challenge Bowl in 1913. They switched to the North Eastern League in
1914/15, finishing the season in ninth place. The outbreak of World War One
brought an end to the League.
With the Great War over, Ashington returned to the North Eastern League.
After finishing seventh in 1921, the Colliers were elected to join the Football
League Third Division North with fellow North Eastern League sides
Darlington, Durham City and Hartlepools United. In 1921 Portland Park was
upgraded from a typical Non-League venue to a stadium designed for
20,000. It had a re-laid pitch, new pavilion, tearoom and large press box
added, as well as new signing Knowles from Manchester United. Thompson
was also signed from Leeds and Foster was brought in from Sunderland.
Ashington’s players were now ready for their professional debuts. An
opening day crowd of 10,000 saw Dickinson fire in the only goal of the game,
as Ashington defeated Grimsby Town 1-0 at home. By the end of the season
the Colliers finished in a respectable 10th place. After finishing second
bottom the season after,
Ashington were successfully re-elected and finished the 1923/24 season in a
superb eighth position, hosting Aston Villa at home in the FA Cup with a
crowd of 11,837 packed into Portland Park, to see the Colliers lose 5-1. The
Colliers remained amongst the Country’s elite until the 1928/29 season when
a disastrous campaign saw the Colliers finish bottom and become one of the
first clubs to miss out on re-election. A struggling team and the miner’s strike,
hit the Colliers hard as crowds dropped dramatically to under 1,000 for the
final few home games in the Football League.
After losing League status, the Colliers returned to the North Eastern League
and reached the FA Cup first round again, going down 3-0 to former Football
League opponents Rotherham. With the War ended, Ashington returned to
the North Eastern League and again reached the FA Cup First Round in
1950, with Rochdale making the trip to Portland Park. A club record
- 6 -
attendance of 13,199 saw Ashington narrowly lose 2-1. When the North
Eastern League folded Ashington joined the Midland League for the 1958/59
season. Ashington were runners-up to Peterborough United in their first
season and were third in their second season. Despite the success the
amount of travelling became a big problem and Ashington joined the North
Regional League. The club then joined the Northern Premier League for the
1968/69 season facing the likes of Macclesfield Town, Wigan Athletic,
Boston United, Altrincham and Northwich Victoria but financial problems
meant the Colliers couldn't afford to play at that level for more than the one
season and in 1970 Ashington FC joined the Northern League.
Ashington’s League form was hardly superb, but the Colliers did reach the
FA Amateur Cup Semi-Final in 1974, before losing to eventual winners
Bishops Stortford in a replay at Brentford. After finishing third in 1979,
Ashington were relegated to the Northern League Second Division in
1984/85. The worst period in the Club’s history followed as Ashington
struggled, the club hit rock bottom in 1994 when they were unable to raise a
team against Crook Town resulting in the whole committee resigning. A
public meeting saw a new committee formed and to celebrate, a group of
supporters launched the highly acclaimed fanzine ‘The Pit Pony Express’.
Success soon switched to the team as the Colliers won their first trophy in 19
years, defeating Evenwood Town 1-0 in the 1999 Craven Cup Final and
winning the Second Division Championship in 2000/2001. Relegation
followed, but Ashington fans were soon celebrating again after winning the
Craven Cup in 2003 with another victory over Evenwood under new manager
Tony Harrison. 2003/4 saw Ashington have one of its most successful
seasons in the past 25 years, an FA Cup run saw Ashington reach the Third
Qualifying Round, another Craven Cup final appearance, as well as winning
the Second Division Championship after a run of 18 straight wins in 2004.
After the shock resignation of Tony Harrison in December 2004, ex-Shildon
manager Ray Gowan was appointed manager taking Ashington away from
the relegation scrap and into a top half finish by the end of the season as
well as two cup semi-finals.
Unfortunately a difficult few seasons followed both on and off the pitch. A few
close scrapes with relegation saw the club frequently changing managers
and with increasing uncertainty surrounding the clubs Portland Park ground,
Ashington FC made the worst start to a season in the clubs history in 2007/8
which saw only one point gained from the first ten matches. In came
manager Andy Gowens, a former Ashington player, who worked wonders in
keeping the Colliers in the Northern League First Division. On Friday 15th
February 2008 Ashington played their final game at Portland Park against
Seaham Red Star. A bumper crowd of 1,954 - the biggest attendance at a
Northern League game in over 25 years - saw Seaham spoil the party with a
3-2 win.
- 7 -
In the summer of 2008 a new executive board took control of the club led by
National Union of Mineworkers President Ian Lavery. In early August 2008
the new ground Woodhorn Lane was opened and on Saturday 30th August
2008, Ashington played their first game at the new ground defeating UniBond
League side Ossett Albion 2-1 in the FA Cup with a crowd of 341. Striker
Gareth Bainbridge, scorer in the last match at Portland Park against
Seaham Red Star had the honour of being the first goalscorer at Woodhorn
Lane.
Over recent seasons, The Colliers, under Gary Middleton’s stewardship the
club made great strides forward on the pitch, to become a side challenging
for a top 6 place each year, and regularly making it to the later stages of the
FA Vase. In fact the 2011-12 saw one of Ashington’s most successful
seasons in recent years. Finishing 5th, our highest league placing for many
years was coupled with two successful runs in the National Competitions. In
the FA Cup the Colliers made it to the fourth qualifying round before losing
away to Grimsby. And in the FA Vase, Ashington had their longest run ever,
making it through to the last 16. The work paid off in May 2013 when the
Colliers won the Senior Cup at St James Park. The 3-0 victory brought home
the Senior Cup for the first time since 1980, and was Ashington’s first trophy
since they won the Craven Cup in 2003 and the Second Division
Championship in 2004.
Unfortunately, the club was unable to build on this success and Middler
resigned in January 2015. His replacement made headline news around the
world. Ashes winning cricketer, and former Colliers defender Stephen
Harmison stepped up to become the new Colliers manager, bringing former
manager Ian Skinner along with him as head coach, and appointing the
legendary former Collier captain Lee Anderson as his number 2.
2015-16 was a landmark year for the club. The award winning Akzonobel
Stand opened in November, with Newcastle United doing the honours on the
opening night. One of the finest in the league, the new facility makes
Woodhorn Lane one of the best Non-League grounds in the North-East and
provides facilities unrivalled in the league.
After a couple of disappointing seasons on the pitch, Harmison and his
management team left their posts in October 2017. Stepping up to fill the
void was Steve Bowey, along with his assistant Gareth McAlindon. Few
people have played more games in the Northern League than Bowey, who
will bring that wealth of experience to bear as he tasks himself with, in his
own words ‘reviving the sleeping giant’ and make the Colliers a force to be
reckoned with once again.
Ashington AFC: Player Profiles
Management
Steve Bowey – Few players have the Northern League experience that Steve
Bowey has, having been one of the top midfielders in non-league football for
over 20 years. Steve joins us from Newcastle Benfield where he played
most of his football in recent years, having also played for the Colliers and Newcastle
Blue Star, among others. His knowledge and experience will be invaluable
as manager as we look to move the club forward, as will his nous and ability on
the park. Sponsored by Doonhamer Travel Club (Queen of the South)
Gareth McAlindon – Joined the Colliers as Steve Bowey’s assistant in October
2017. A familiar face around the Northern League, having played at this level for
a number of years at clubs including Bedlington Terriers and Whitley Bay, his
input will be invaluable to Steve Bowey.
Players
Conor Grant – Talented Goalkeeper who joined the club from Blyth Spartans in
September 2014. Conor has established himself as the Northern League’s best
his position, with pace to burn and maturity beyond his years.
attacking full-back who adds class to the Colliers defence as well as an attacking
threat from deep.
Lane following a spell at Sunderland RCA. Wayne played in his native Northern
captaining Blyth Spartans. Wayne has also played for our neighbours, Morpeth
Town. Sponsored by Ashington CFC Supporters & Social Club
Shaun Vipond – Shaun needs no introduction as he has been one of the premier
players in the Northern League in recent times. Strong in defence, and com-
- 12 -
posed on the ball, Shaun is equally adept at playing at the back or in midfield
Glen Caygill - Promising young defender who joined the Colliers in the summer
of 2018.
Lee McAndrew – Another player who returns to Ashington from Morpeth Town.
A skilful winger, Lee played in the final match at Portland Park before he left for
Dunston UTS where he played at Wembley in their 2012 FA Vase success
and made 175 appearances in total for them.
Kyle Downey – Classy and composed midfielder who is very comfortable on the
middle of the 2013-14 season, and has since become a fan favourite. Sponsored
by Jen Walker
David Edwards – Classy midfielder who joined the Colliers in the summer of
2017. David’s ability on the ball and vision make him a very effective midfielder
and a welcome addition to the club’s ranks. Sponsored by Ian Reid
Sponsored by Ashington CFC Under 17s
Ashington CFC Juniors - Chairman’s Reflection
As another year draws to a close, it’s good to reflect on 2018 as a whole.
I’m sure those involved with Ashington CFC Juniors will agree it’s been
quite a successful year both on and off the pitch, a real credit to the effort
of all our members, not just the managers, coaches and players.
As always in football it’s good to see success on the pitch, starting with
David Hancock and our now U15’s Eagles who won the 2017/18 Under
14 NEYDL Championship, winning 21 out of 24 games. The Eagles
scored an incredible 129 goals and conceded just 35, going unbeaten in
the league from October 14 th right the way through to the end of the season.
Gary Bell also enjoyed a successful
2017/18 season with his then under
16 Saturday and Sunday teams.
Firstly, his Saturday team who finished
the season with a phenomenal
100% record, winning 19 out of 19
games! The lads managed to score
129 goals, conceding just 15 goals in
the process, as they stormed the
Gateshead Apollo League. Gary’s Sunday team saw a replay of the previous
season’s NEYDL Cup final, this time the other side of a 2-1 score
line to be crowned champions – two fantastic acrobatic efforts winning
them the game.
One of the highlights in 2018 as a club must
be securing an evening with renowned
coach Pete Sturgess, bringing his Foundation
Phase DNA Roadshow to Woodhorn
Lane in October. To have hosted the event
ahead of other local clubs who expressed
interest was a proud moment for the club,
giving us the opportunity to show off what
fantastic facilities Ashington CFC has to offer.
The evening was a great success and attended by around 150
coaches. As a club we were really able to set the standard for future
events, hopefully brining more nights like these to Woodhorn Lane in future.
- 14 -
2018 has seen a lot of
progress off the pitch
too thanks to the hard
work of our volunteers –
most recently a fantastic
offering to the Wansbeck
Valley Foodbank to
support the new initiative
set up by Ashington
CFC.
I think the biggest step
forward is the direction
the club is now heading in, especially in the latter stages of the year. As
a junior club we now have an ambitious 5-year development plan which
will see some big changes to the club as the whole to further improve the
all-round experience our members receive, further establishing Ashington
CFC Juniors as one of THE places to play junior football in the North
East.
The every-growing ties between
our juniors set up
and the senior set up at
Ashington CFC is probably
the biggest positive to come
out of 2018. Having myself
and Lynne Bell join the senior
executive committee and
Ashington CFC Chairman
Brian Shotton join our junior
committee is a real step forward
for both clubs. A lot of hard work has and will continue to go on behind
the scenes to see our ‘One Club’ vision come into fruition.
To conclude, 2018 has shown real glimpses of a good future for Ashington
CFC, both for the juniors and the senior sides, with new ambitious
plans in place and the hardworking members and volunteers who go
above and beyond for the club.
Thank you to everyone for their efforts this year and here’s to a fantastic
- 19 -
A couple of months have
passed since I was given the
honour of being appointed
Chairman of this great club, the
cornerstone of Ashington in
many respects over the last
century.
The last decade has proven a
challenge in many ways. During
this time there have been many
highs, but also significant
challenges; none more so than
the ones we face today.
Chairman’s Update
Those of you who attended the open meeting in November know
that I am committed to building an open, honest, transparent and
sustainable club focused on community integration.
Over the last 2 months we have taken significant formative steps
towards those goals. Ashington Juniors are an integral part of our
club moving forward, and I was delighted to welcome Lynne Bell
and Matthew Potts onto the Executive Board in my first week as
Chairman, and I was honoured to join the board of Ashington
Juniors shortly after. We have also made great strides in
streamlining our business including developing a comprehensive
football development plan and an ambitious and wide-ranging
business plan for the club as a whole. I hope to be able to share
these plans with you in the new year. We have also sought to give
something back to our community through various fundraising and
charitable initiatives, with further projects extending into 2019 and
beyond.
However, it is no secret that tough decisions have been taken, and
further will be required going forward in order to stabilise the club
off the field including overall club direction and finances to allow us
to overcome the challenges we face and grow to achieve our goals.
- 20 -
In particular, the budget for the playing staff took a significant
reduction in early November. In this regard I would like to place on
record my own personal gratitude to Steve Bowey and his players
for the commitment, loyalty and dedication they have shown.
Regardless of what happens with the future of our club, this squad
and management should and will be remembered for sticking by
the club during its most difficult period in a generation.
Across the board we are looking to stabilise and grow our
reputation in the local community. To this end we are now in
tentative discussions with our landlord Advance Northumberland
(formerly Arch) on a proposal to resolve a number of outstanding
issues. We would like to thank Advance Northumberland for this
opportunity, and hope these discussions secure a sustainable
future for the Club and working relationship moving forward.
Our club is still ultimately in transition and is far from the finished
article. The Directors and board are committed to building a real
community asset in the heart of Ashington which is here for many
decades to come and we are heading in that direction. The future
of our club is in all of our hands and it greatly depends on you; the
fans, the local community and the business community. I would
encourage the whole of Ashington to join us on this journey, and
continue to support Ashington Community Football Club with the
loyalty and passion the town is renowned for. There are challenges
to come in the new year, but we need to be equipped as best we
can and be committed to ensure that our club has a secure and
long term future, and you are all part of that.
To everyone involved with Ashington Community Football Club, the
fans, the sponsors and our community partners – have a great
Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Lets hope 2019 marks a
new beginning for Ashington Community Football Club, and we all
come together to make it a community asset we can all be proud
of.
Ashington went down to their fourth league defeat this season
when Sunderland RCA deservedly claimed the spoils despite
playing with ten men for 75 minutes. And afterwards, Colliers
manager Steve Bowey – who was once again forced to bring the
changes with players missing due to a variety of reasons – said
that the performance wasn’t good enough and added that
Saturday’s home clash against Whickham is a must-win game for
Sunderland RCA: History
Sunderland RCA FC started life as Ryhope Youth Club. Its first
season was in the Seaham and District League in 1963. The first
game was against Seaham UDC at the Seaham CW ground, now
home to Seaham Red Star, and it was a 3 - 3 draw. The first seeds
had been sown three years earlier, in 1960, when the Ryhope
Youth Club Centre opened in the Welfare Hall.
In 1965 the club moved to the Colliery Welfare ground and in 1971
changed its name to Ryhope Community Association. Competing in
the Seaham, then Houghton and District Leagues, the club enjoyed
success with eight cup wins and four league titles.
Rejected by the Wearside League because a Ryhope team already
played in it, the club folded after the 1975-76 season. Re-formed
three years later, the club joined the Northern Alliance in 1978 and
won the League Challenge Cup at St James Park in Newcastle, in
only their third season. Ryhope CA were also league runners up
that year, even though they were reduced to playing on a school
field.
After some persuasion, the ambitious club convinced the council to
lease then some derelict land - Meadow Park was underway.
Financial help was obtained from Sunderland and Tyne and Wear
Councils and the Sports Council to build a football ground. The club
members and community joined together to carry out the building
work, resulting in the enclosed ground where football games are
played and enjoyed today.
In 1982 the club was a founder member of the Northern League
Second Division, achieving promotion as runner up in the 1983-84
season. Despite a league placing of tenth the next season, survival
proved difficult and the club was relegated in 1988.
In 1999 a new era commenced with the amalgamation with Kennek
Roker of the Wearside League to form Kennek Ryhope Community
Association. The seasons from 2003 onwards were tough, but for
the season 2006-07, the club joined forces with Springboard
Sunderland and a new era as Sunderland RCA FC began.
- 28 -
Progress continues to be made both on and off the pitch and after
finishing fourth in the previous two seasons Sunderland RCA FC
were promoted as runners-up to Stokesley FC in season 2009-10 -
a great achievement. Our first season back in Division 1 started
badly, but we picked ourselves up, had a purple patch and finished
the season in 13th place.
Progress continued in the following season when we achieved our
highest finish in the league (4th) under the management of Neil
Hixon. The following season saw us almost relegated and we only
retained first division status after a vote at the AGM went in our
favour. The introduction of Martin Swales as manager brought a
renewed belief to the club and the 2015 - 16 season saw a great
FA Vase run where we reached the 5th round proper before being
beaten by Bristol Manor Farm. This was followed by a similar run in
the 2016-17 season, exiting in the 5th round against Newport
Pagnell. In the 2017-18 season the club equalled its highest
Northern League placing, finishing fourth after a sensational late
season surge, when the side played highly entertaining and incisive
attacking football.
Acknowledgement
Sunderland RCA are very grateful to Joe Dixon for providing
information about the early years of Sunderland RCA. Joe played
for what was then Ryhope Youth Club and subsequently Ryhope
Community Association from its first match in 1963 through to the
1978-79 season. Joe has turned from goal scorer to historian and a
wealth of detail can be found on his web site – http://
Match Report - Consett 2 Ashington 0
Attendance 361
Referee
Date / Time
Derric Wade
Saturday 8th December 2018 - 3:00 PM
By Brian Bennett
Two second half goals inside five minutes
from Consett’s Matthew Slocombe and Michael
Sweet sent Ashington spiralling to
their eighth league defeat of the season at a
bitterly cold Belle View Stadium on Saturday.
The win kept the Steelmen joint top of the Ebac
Northern League first division table alongside
Dunston UTS whilst for the Colliers it was the
same old story. Steve Bowey’s side have faced four of the top six
over the past few weeks and won many accolades for their general
play – but sadly this latest setback was their 11th competitive game
without a victory. Striker Zak Atkinson, who had hit the woodwork in
the previous encounter against Dunston, again went close, striking
the post and crossbar in separate incidents in either half as Ashington
- brimful with determination - desperately tried to unlock the
door. But then with 20 minutes remaining, Bowey’s side switched off
at a free kick 22 yards out. Danny Craggs’s effort thudded against
the underside of the bar and as the Colliers stood still, Slocombe
headed the ball into an empty net. Substitute Sweet fired wide of
the far post before he sewed up the result in the 77th minute. Glenn
Caygill’s challenge on sub Richard Juul saw referee Derric Wade
point to the spot and Sweet send Conor Grant the wrong way with a
firmly struck penalty. Game over – only in the final minute of the 90,
home stopper and former Ashington ‘keeper Kyle Hayes, was
forced to dive full stretch to his left to deny Jack Butler following a
cross from sub Jake Cunningham. From the start it had been a low
key affair with the first opportunity arriving in the tenth minute as
- 30 -
Gez Richardson, Atkinson and Butler combined with the latter firing
well wide. Hayes pocketed a 25 yards drive from Chris Youldon before
Consett threatened for the first time with Darren Cornish’s effort
taken at the second attempt by Grant. Shortly afterwards, Darren
Holden found Cornish whose shot was tipped around by the ‘keeper
then Luke Carr narrowly missed the target from distance. Full back
Aidan Hutchinson - looking solid on his Ashington debut following
his transfer from Seaham Red Star – sent Butler away down the left
but the move ended with Butler dragging his effort across the face
of goal. Home skipper Craggs saw his shot whistle just wide then
seconds before half time, the hard working Atkinson harassed
Hayes and when the striker won possession, looked on as his right
footer thudded against the base of the post. Early in the second
half, a free kick by Carr went just over – but Ashington’s riposte was
to lay siege on the home goal with Hayes diving to push around
from Atkinson; Butler inches wide with a sizzling effort; a shot by
Atkinson deflected for a corner and from McAndrew’s resultant flag
kick on the left, a close range shot from Atkinson crash against the
bar. Grant made a terrific block to deny Carr then following a well
constructed move, Youldon struck a left footer wide. Slocombe
broke the deadlock and when Sweet added a quick fire second,
Ashington’s afternoon of high hopes quickly evaporated.
Ashington: Grant, McAndrew, Hutchinson, Henderson, Caygill,
Sunderland RCA: Player profiles
James Armstrong - Full back, Midfielder - James starts his fifth season at the club,
having previously played for Spennymoor Town FC after being released by Sunderland
AFC and Hull City. James is a versatile player who can operate in both midfield and
defence. He has good vision and awareness and his defence splitting passes and free
kicks are a joy to watch.
Stephen Callen - Winger - Stephen starts his fifth season with RCA. Stephen is a pacy
and dynamic player who is equally at home on either wing or played up front as a striker.
Strong and powerful, he has great touch and control on the ball and possesses a terrific
shot which will see him produce his fair share of goal scoring opportunities.
Michael Charlton - Midfielder, Winger - Michael is another player who is starting
his fifth season at the club. He is well liked by the fans because he makes things happen
on the pitch. He is a fast, tricky winger who likes to run at defenders. Very direct in his
play, he also possesses the ability to cross the ball at pace into the danger area. 100%
energy and commitment enables him to help out in defence as well.
Mark Davison - Forward - Mark Davison needs no introduction for Northern League
football fans. A strong and direct centre forward who can be relied upon to score with
head and feet as well as setting up opportunities for others, Sparky is returning for his
quality to play at this level and above. A likeable lad off the pitch, he is not to be trifled
with on it.
Andy Kokoska - Goalkeeper - Andy, a tall and powerfully built goalkeeper, is on a
addition to the squad and adds depth in a number of positions.
Ross McNab - Full back - Ross starts his third season with the club after returning
from Billingham Synthonia. A left sided player, Ross has developed into a very good full
back who is equally at home playing in the centre of defence. Defensively he is very
passing. Injury free he is a great asset to the squad and a pleasure to have around the
club.
at Wolverhampton Wanderers has a strong footballing upbringing. He played for SAFC 7-
9s, the Sunderland Sunday League for Nissan and from 13 to 14 was at Hartlepool, fitting
in a trial at Manchester United. Dom can play striker, midfield and full back. His key
strengths are his hard work and commitment to the team. Long term RCA fans will
remember Dom attending RCA matches as a youngster, when his father Glenn played for
us.
Nathan O'Neill - Forward - This is Nathan's third season at RCA, having signed from
principally a centre half, but can play across the park.
Greg Swansbury - Central defender - Greg starts his third season with RCA since
signing from Washington and now captains the side. At 6'4", Greg is a powerful, imposing,
no nonsense, old school central defender. As expected, he is good in the air, but he is
also deceptively good on the ground with great awareness of situations as they develop.
Greg was joint winner of the Management Player of the Season and winner of
the Players' Player of the Season awards in the 2017-18 season, a testimony to his
leadership on the pitch.
Dimitrios Tsapalos - Goalkeeper - 25 year old Dimitrios joined us from Morpeth Town,
Northern League experience both as a player and as a manager. He managed the very
successful Ryhope Colliery Welfare team who in Season 2010-11 won all four
competitions in the Wearside League. Repeating the feat the following year and also
clinching promotion for RCW to the Northern League Division 2. He has also managed
Bishop Auckland for a short time. He is passionate about his football, especially in the
local area, and instills a sense of belief in his players.
Gary Errington - Assistant Manager - Now in his fourth season with RCA “Gee"
returned to the club that he played at for a number of seasons. He was also a member of
the very successful Easington CW FC team which reached the first round proper of the
FA Cup. Gee has been assistant to Swaz for a number of years now and complements
the manager's style with his own flair. Rarely see him without a smile on his face.
Mark Cowan - Assistant Manager - Mark has been a big supporter of RCA off the field
and has now jumped over the fence to join the football management. After a bad knee
injury put pay to his footballing career as a youngster, Mark, from Birtley, ran teams in the
Gateshead and District Sunday League. Mark brings commitment, energy, enthusiasm
and management experience to the organisation of the team.
Colin Larkin - Coach, Forward - Now into his fiftth season with RCA, Colin is the
epitome of a professional, and his influence is seen throughout the team. Colin's previous
clubs include West Auckland, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Kidderminster Harriers (loan),
Alfreton Town, Chesterfield, Northampton, Hartlepool, Lincoln City, Harrogate Town and
Gateshead. He leads by example on and off the pitch and his enthusiasm for the game is
infectious and the younger players in the squad will continue to learn from Colin.
Mohsen Hussein - Coach - Mohsen is a local business man who has run local football
teams in the Sunderland area and has been recruited by Sunderland RCA for his ideas on
young local footballers to come through the junior systems. Mo is currently doing UEFA B
whenever he can. Mo will be a great asset to RCA with his local and training knowledge.
Carl Morris - Coach, Goalkeeper - After a couple of seasons playing in goal for us,
Carl returned to RCA as goalkeeping coach for the 2017-18 season. With a heart as big
the club who is always ready with an encouraging word.
James - Lenny - French - Coach - Lenny, who has joined RCA as a goalkeeping
coach, played Northern League football for most his career and worked with Martin
Ryton, he's a great addition to our team.
From the desk of Brian Bennett (@scoopbb)
“OVERALL WE SHOULD HAVE WON”
It was another encouraging
performance which attracted loads of
compliments - but sadly Ashington
stretched their winless run to 11 games
on Saturday when second half goals
from Matthew Slocombe and substitute
Michael Sweet saw Consett run out 2-0
victors and remain joint top of the Ebac
Northern League with Dunston UTS.
For Colliers manager Steve Bowey and his
squad, it was another bitter pill to swallow
- and Bowey reflected ruefully on the result
outlining that his outfit should have taken
the three points on offer: “I thought we
were excellent first half – the shape we
kept was brilliant and Consett didn’t have any chances,” he said
afterwards, “We looked dangerous on the break and used the ball well
and I’ve just said to the lads, the last eight or nine games we have been
unlucky – but I’m sick of saying that. Throughout we’ve had five or six
golden opportunities to score and overall we should have won the game.
We also started the second period very well and were quick out of the
blocks and should have been two or three up and put the game to bed -
but it wasn’t to be. On the positive side we created opportunities. Then
they get a free kick after our lad has clearly won the ball and I can’t
understand what the referee has seen - and they have scored from it.
When Danny Craggs knocked the ball in, no-one went with the runner
and then the quick fire second goal followed but we still could have
scored two in the last five minutes.”
He continued: “On another day, the chances we have created go in.
Consett like to play at the back but we pressed high and we pinched the
ball a couple of times in the first half and we could have been ahead at
the break. They (Consett) played right into our hands and we are all
disappointed because people will look at the result and not see the bigger
picture. We created enough chances to win the game and I’m gutted but
when you are at the top things go for you and when you are struggling
you don’t get the rub of the green – even at the end they cleared one off
the line. I say it every week that we have got to turn the corner and get a
result – but that corner is getting bigger and bigger. It’s so frustrating.
- 35 -
They scored two set plays – not by open play which is disappointing from
a manager’s perspective – and usually they beat teams on their own
patch comfortably. I’m not pulling any punches because we were the
better team and it was unfortunate we couldn’t put the ball into the back
of the net. Football is all about scoring and we didn’t do that today.”
Bowey handed a debut to young Aidan Hutchinson whom he had signed
from Seaham Red Star: “Aidan was solid and defended well,” he said,
“He’s a centre half by trade but he’s a left footer and played at left back
for us today. He’s a great addition and another 19 year old lad who has
got loads of potential. This is what we have got to do – bring the young
lads in and give them an opportunity, a chance. Aidan took the chance
today and enjoyed it although he like all of us was disappointed that we
conceded and that was the only blip because I couldn’t see Consett
scoring – I really couldn’t.”
Meanwhile Bowey has given his squad a week off as Ashington are
without a fixture this Saturday: “We have our players Christmas party
coming up and we are going to have a good jolly-up and then go again
against Sunderland RCA on December 22,” he said, “For that match,
we’ll have two key players - Karl Ross and Shaun Vipond - back in the
squad. We are playing Tony Stephenson – a striker – as a centre half
and are filling in gaps but these players are doing well. I cannot fault their
attitude, effort and commitment to the club – it’s been fantastic.”
BUCHANAN HOPES WISHES WILL COME TRUE
Ashington’s FC’s Wayne Buchanan
has indirectly enlisted the help of a
special person in a bid to make his
Christmas and birthday wishes both
come true. Buchanan’s wife Laura took
their daughter Faith – who will
celebrate her sixth birthday on Friday -
and four month old son Jackson to see
Santa last week – and at the same time
asked Mr Claus if he could assist with
Wayne’s comeback!
The defensive lynchpin – who has been
sidelined since breaking his leg in a freak
incident against Hebburn Town in the
Colliers second game of the season – is
nearing a return and if he were to be
thrust into competitive action over the festive period, Buchanan – 37 in
- 36 -
January - would certainly describe it as being the perfect double. In early
August, he landed awkwardly near the touchline and suffered two breaks
to his fibula.
“The leg is strong now so I’m back in training and making contact,” said
Buchanan, who was born in Banbridge, County Down “I work as a
personal coach at a school and have been doing exercises in PE trying to
build the leg back up. All I want now is fitness – and getting minutes on
the field. I was named as a substitute at Consett recently but obviously
they (the management) didn’t want to risk me on the artificial surface and
it may have been a tad early too. We’ll see how things go over next
couple of weeks but it’s nice to be involved again – especially as January
had been originally been pencilled in as a possible comeback date.”
Buchanan – who scooped both the Player’s Player of the Year and
supporters Player of the Year awards at the end of the last campaign -
added: “Because of the injury and the time frame of it, I knew I couldn’t
possibly be playing now and was able to accept things more and just
focus on getting myself right – but I’ve got to admit that I have been
kicking every ball. I’ve helped out behind the scenes in the dressing room
and yes it has been frustrating especially over the last few weeks where
we haven’t been taking chances and opposing teams have been making
unbelievable blocks. However the team have been playing very well and
we cannot allow ourselves to become deflated.”
Team Valley based Buchanan added: “On one hand I’m itching to get
back – but on the other I’m cautious as well. I want to be a benefit to the
team rather than being a hindrance. At the moment I feel I could go on
and have an effect but you never know until you play games.”
Woodhorn Lane boss Steve Bowey said: “The news that Wayne is
approaching his comeback is a massive boost for everybody throughout
the club. He suffered a terrible injury and is keen to get back but we have
got to have his best interests at heart. He has trained over the last three
to four weeks and he’ll be looking to be involved in our home game
against Sunderland RCA on Saturday. We want Wayne back - but we
have to be cautious. He has been sidelined for a considerable amount of
time and it must be a case of easing him back gradually and not rushing
things.”
He continued: “Wayne has been fantastic during his prolonged absence.
He’s rarely missed a training session or game and been part of what we
want to achieve. It’s difficult when you are injured but he has been a
massive influence both on and off the pitch and is well respected. I’m
more than happy he’s back in the frame but we won’t be risking him - and
the final decision will be left to him.”
From the horses mouth - A Northern League roundup
The weather played havoc with the fixture list last
weekend as the majority of games ended up postponed.
7 games did get the go-ahead and probably the most
entertaining game, despite the atrocious conditions,
was the Ryhope derby.
Sunderland RCA welcomed neighbours Ryhope CW
and the sides didn’t let the conditions hinder the entertainment
for 72 in attendance that braved the elements.
RCA found themselves 2-1 by the 8th minute after a frantic start. Nathan
O’Neill found the net in the first minute for RCA but that lead only lasted until
the 7th minute when Ryhope CW’s Jack Devlin equalised. But straight from
the kick off Kyle Davis had put RCA back in front. Devlin and Davis again
traded goals within a minute of each other in the 35th and 36th minutes to se
RCA lead 3-2 at half time. Ryhope CW equalised for the 3rd time in the 51st
minute through Michael Rae but RCA had the final say when O’Neill grabbed
his 2nd in the 57th minute to give RCA the win with a 4-3 score line.
In another local derby North Shields made the short trip to Whitley Bay and
enjoyed their afternoon coming away with a 3-0 win in front of a brilliant
crowd of 417. North Shields goals coming through Sean McRoberts 51st minute
opener and two late strikes from Gary Day in the 85th and 90th minutes.
The only other division one game to be played last Saturday was a 0-0 stalemate
As Guisborough Town will have been happier with that score than
hosts Hebburn Town.
In division two four games survived. Billingham Town beat Washington 5-3
on Teesside as Ashley Lavan found the net four times for the home side.
Northallerton Town also had their own hat trick hero as Aaron Ramsbottom
score all 3 goals for then home side in a 3-2 win over Bedlington Terriers.
Bradley Higgins and Adam Harvey getting the Terriers goals.
Glen Hargrave scored two to put the visiting Jarrow 2-0 ahead at Thornaby.
Kurtis Howes scored what would prove to only be a consolation goal for the
home side in the 60th minute.
In the league cup the previous midweek Newcastle Benfield progressed to
the next round as they defeated division two’s West Allotment Celtic 3-1 at
Druid Park.
A Ross McNab own goal was enough to see Stockton Town through as they
won at Sunderland RCA while Consett beat Bishop Auckland 4-2 Ross Wilkinson
scoring two for the home side with Bishops Michael Hoganson also
getting a brace.
Newton Aycliffe won 1-0 at home to Guisborough Town with Shaun Hudson’s
50th minute goal separating the side. Each side had a player sent off after
that to see them both finish the game with 10 men.
