patch comfortably. I’m not pulling any punches because we were the
better team and it was unfortunate we couldn’t put the ball into the back
of the net. Football is all about scoring and we didn’t do that today.”
Bowey handed a debut to young Aidan Hutchinson whom he had signed
from Seaham Red Star: “Aidan was solid and defended well,” he said,
“He’s a centre half by trade but he’s a left footer and played at left back
for us today. He’s a great addition and another 19 year old lad who has
got loads of potential. This is what we have got to do – bring the young
lads in and give them an opportunity, a chance. Aidan took the chance
today and enjoyed it although he like all of us was disappointed that we
conceded and that was the only blip because I couldn’t see Consett
scoring – I really couldn’t.”
Meanwhile Bowey has given his squad a week off as Ashington are
without a fixture this Saturday: “We have our players Christmas party
coming up and we are going to have a good jolly-up and then go again
against Sunderland RCA on December 22,” he said, “For that match,
we’ll have two key players - Karl Ross and Shaun Vipond - back in the
squad. We are playing Tony Stephenson – a striker – as a centre half
and are filling in gaps but these players are doing well. I cannot fault their
attitude, effort and commitment to the club – it’s been fantastic.”
BUCHANAN HOPES WISHES WILL COME TRUE
Ashington’s FC’s Wayne Buchanan
has indirectly enlisted the help of a
special person in a bid to make his
Christmas and birthday wishes both
come true. Buchanan’s wife Laura took
their daughter Faith – who will
celebrate her sixth birthday on Friday -
and four month old son Jackson to see
Santa last week – and at the same time
asked Mr Claus if he could assist with
Wayne’s comeback!
The defensive lynchpin – who has been
sidelined since breaking his leg in a freak
incident against Hebburn Town in the
Colliers second game of the season – is
nearing a return and if he were to be
thrust into competitive action over the festive period, Buchanan – 37 in
