“Choripan” and banana milk
Cooking eccentricity that captivates
all the senses
A few meters from the Benjamín Muñoz
Gamero main square, in the heart of Punta
Arenas, a group of cheerful women (the venue
is exclusively ran by women) receives the
orders of dozens of early risers who, before
starting their usual activities, almost as a
duty, go to the classic Kiosko Roca for a
traditional “choripán con leche con plátano”,
a true popular culinary symbol of the city that
is gaining more followers each day.
The fame of the recipe has its origin precisely
in the unusual combination of its ingredients:
spicy pork sausage paste housed between
two small loaves of fresh bread just out of the
oven. The result is simple and disconcerting

for the novice, constituting a quick bite of
low cost and not as heavy for the stomach
as one would expect from a grilled pork
sausage before breakfast!
It all started in 1932 with the opening of the
emblematic family kitchen. The menu consists
entirely of this classic sandwich, prepared at
the moment -with homemade mayonnaise,
or with cheese, if that is what the diner likes.
The recipe has been maintained over time,
as well as the unique personality of the place,
which openly exhibits family fanaticism for
the football club Universidad de Chile.
The formula has earned them the national
title of “Best Picada de Chile” in 2012, after
a national competition organized by the then
National Council of Culture and the Arts. A
plaque at the entrance of the kiosk reminds
visitors that they are about to enter a unique
place. The title was ratified in 2017 through
popular voting.
Its austere facade tends to deceive the
distracted passers-by who stroll along the
street Presidente Julio Roca. Its unorthodox
recipe might be deceiving as well, but one
bite is enough to understand its popularity.
The fame and prestige of Kiosko Roca and its
unique “choripán” have crossed the borders
of Patagonia. Nowadays, its flavor can be

enjoyed in cities such as Santiago (with
three locations), Valparaíso and Concepción.
There is no visitor, public figure or politician
who has not been carried away by living
the culinary experience of a freshly baked
choripán, accompanied by a glass of banana
milk. Almost like an obligation, almost like
knowing the Torres del Paine, almost like
kissing the foot of the Indian in the main
square’s monument!
