Building an Antarctic Culture
Just what is the social benefit of the scientific
work being done in Antarctica? Why should
Chile increase its efforts for greater scientific
productivity on that continent? How do citizens
benefit from this? Questions such as these
are an obligatory part of the analysis that
we should undertake each year, in order to
create strategies that let us bring Antarctica
closer to the people of this country.
As those responsible for the generation of
scientific knowledge that is useful for the
nation of Chile, we have assumed that
some of the anticipated results will also bring
about a greater appreciation of Antarctic
scientific activity by our society in general.
We try to encourage real and concrete citizen
participation in the benefits that these activities
bring to the country, and above all, for the
Magallanes region.
To accomplish our aforementioned aims we
have developed various strategies, as seen
in several activities and projects. Perhaps
the best known is the educational “Antarctic
School Fair” program now in its fifteenth year.
This program is intended to open the hearts
and minds of hundreds of young people
throughout the country to help them learn,
understand, and appreciate the knowledge
being developed about Antarctica. During
these 15 years we have learned from our
errors, and from our successes. The Antarctic
School Fair is now more mature and provokes
greater interest, as well as representing greater
challenges for its organizers. In re¬cent
years we have had to expand our focus for
these young people, to include the social
sciences. Likewise we have created strong
incentives for participation and collaborative
work among students from several regions
of the country, using the internet and social
networks. By utilizing these tools we expect
that these young people will understand that
in the case of Antarctica, cooperation is more
important than competition.
Now that this activity has become
institutionalized, we have added teaching
days for pre-school educators along with
week-long seminars specially designed for
primary education instructors, called “Polar
Scientist for a Day” as we recall that our young
people are important allies in our attempts to
“Antarctisize” Chile.
But we are still trying to go further, by
incorporating the community, with its diverse
interests and talents. During the year 2017 we
have activated three initiatives that contribute
to this objective.
The first of these is called “Antarcticans”
to distinguish a “tribe” of citizens who have
demonstrated a genuine interest in Antarctica,
for its protection, and for means to strengthen
Antarctic values. A fundamental feature
of any tribe is those who use art to reflect
the cultural traditions of the tribe. We are
now working together with a group of local
artisans to combine their talents with scientific
knowledge about Antarctica, to bring about
results that reveal a great deal of beauty and
significance.
The second initiative attempts to showcase
paleontological findings from the Magallanes
region, particularly for those who work in the
tourism industry, in hopes that such knowledge
will result in new offerings for tourists.
Finally, we wanted to recognize those
citizens who, for numerous reasons, deserve
the thanks of the general public for their
contributions to Antarctic matters. And so
we organized the first Antarctic Gala event,
with all the glamour and dignity befitting such
a ceremony. We hope that, just as with the
Antarctic School Fairs, this Antarctic Gala will
become both a regional and national tradition,
and thus an opportunity to recognize Chile
as a “polar country.”
It’s also the right time for music, dancing,
