When time is of the essence
Sometimes, print is
not perfect.
I’m not talking
about typos or judgment
calls, but rather the inner
workings of how long it
takes to prepare a product
for print — and ours
often is not as flexible as
I wish it could be. This
week, we have an article
on the rapidly approaching
deadline for fire victims to
register with the Federal
Emergency Management
Agency. You can read the
story on Page 3, but as you
are likely well aware, the
This can happen in an
instant. Get in and drive
SoCal is filled with
automotive gold. In every
direction. It’s free. It costs
nothing but your time. If
you’re stressed or have
doubts about something,
let it go. Take a chance,
get out there and then let
me know what you did so
Friday, Jan. 11 deadline
is just around the corner
by the time our readers
receive this edition in the
mail. Unfortunately, our
production deadlines prevented
that particular story
from reaching print sooner.
In times like these,
particularly in the wake
of the Woolsey Fire, we
rely on our website and
our social media channels
to reach as many people
as possible, as quickly
as possible. While much
of our website is subscription-based,
anything
related to the fire is not,
as we know how imperative
it is for those details
to get out to the general
public. That story as well
as dozens others related
to the fire and recovery
efforts can be found at
MalibuSurfsideNews.
you to check the page
frequently, as the churn of
information is constant.
Poet’s Corner
Malibu on Fire
Glen Gessford
Malibu resident
For us, this was the year
of the horrific windblown
Woolsey fire,
We left our house when
we could see flames and
warnings were dire.
We evacuated to June
and Jeff’s which is located
where else but Point Dume,
Where the next morning
the police tried to evacuate
us from our room.
We decided to stay and
did fire drill practices with
the hose,
In case the need for putting
out hot embers ever
arose.
We drove around the
neighborhoods, lots of
police but not a firetruck to
be seen,
In fact, they were down
at Pepperdine defending
the college scene.
fresh, homemade compost
and the best around, in
my opinion. Turn over the
compost and the rock dust,
and mix in with your soil.
This is a good time to check
your watering. Try to go to
subsurface irrigation if possible.
Buried will conserve
water and offer additional
protection against fires.
Then, I would apply
azalea/gardenia mix. Try
Trancas Nursery. Why is
this stuff so wonderful? It
is made from earthworm
castings and aged wood. It
has an acid pH. Our soil is
too alkaline (around 7.4 to
7.8). Plants and trees will
do better closer to neutral
(7) or a slightly acidic (6.8)
At night we sat up in
June’s upper yoga room
with a spectacular view,
And watched as flames
blew down the canyons
and destroyed Malibu.
Fortunately, some men
in our area stopped the fire
before it spread,
We were ready with our
hoses and masks on our
head.
A few days later we
came back to our home on
the hill,
It was safe, a firetruck
from Park City, Utah was
guarding it still.
These experiences in life
teach you to value family
and friend,
They are what is important
in the end.
pH. By the way, the “good
guys” live in the pH range
of 6.6-6.9. The farther away
from this range, the less
you will see this fantastic
microbial army. Other types
of microbial life are found
outside of this range.
I would also make sure to
amend the soil thoroughly
if replanting. Use half compost
and earthworm casting.
Foliar spray the soil
and trees with this same
living microbial life. Save
some of each and make a
compost tea, then spray the
ground, trunks and branches
of everything that might
be alive!
