The Dish
Taverna Tony carries on under new ownership
Classic Greek fare,
Taverna Tony, an iconic
Malibu venue that has
played a role in many Malibuites’
special occasions,
continues to serve its popular
menu under the tutelage
of its new owner, Zane
Koss, a well-respected restaurateur
in Southern California.
To whet the appetite,
one might try one of the
many mezes on offer at
the Greek establishment.
The taramosalata dip
($7.95) is a flavorful, satiating
starter made with
red caviar, lemon juice
and onions. Another satisfying
appetizer is the
melitzanosalata ($7.95),
an eggplant dip infused
with garlic and lemon and
seasoned with sesame oil.
No matter what meze one
selects, the flavors entice
and invite one to settle
in for a hearty, delightful
dining experience.
The soups also are terrific
at Taverna Tony. The
lentil soup ($7.95) features
flavorful lentils, fresh tomatoes,
carrots, celery,
garlic, onions, herbs and
spices in a hearty broth.
This selection can serve as
a satiating light lunch or as
the beginning to an epicurean
adventure.
Simply stated, Taverna
Tony is a foodie institution
in this town.
“This restaurant has been
my home and my job location
over a decade and my
customers have become my
lifelong friends and family,”
said Leila Vilton, a
well-known waitress at the
venue. “We’re open 365
days a year, and customers
enjoy our live band each
night and our belly dancing
on the weekends.”
As one sits in the rustic
atmosphere, complete with
art depicting Greek landscapes
and structures, and
smells herb-infused aromas
from the kitchen, it’s difficult
to decide which flavorful
entrée to select. The rotisserie
routinely generates
classic, robust lamb dishes
and oftentimes, one can
enjoy exciting game dish
specials.
After much deliberation,
Malibu Surfside News
opted for a traditional
Greek classic: moussaka
($21.95). This deep-dish
delight features large,
moist, flavorful layers of
eggplant, with zucchini,
ground beef, tomatoes and
béchamel sauce, all smothered
with grated cheese.
This filling entrée includes
fresh vegetables of the day
that are perfectly grilled
and seasoned, Greek-style
roasted potatoes, and rice
pilaf.
One can pair the dish
with a glass or bottle of
Moussaka ($21.95) is among the traditional Greek
entrees served at Malibu’s Taverna Tony, which is now
under new ownership.
one of the hearty Cabernet
Sauvignon selections from
the restaurant’s ample wine
list.
It would be easy to finish
a wonderful dining experience
after a hearty entrée.
Dessert and coffee, however,
are integral to enjoying
Greek fare. Consider
trying one of the classic
desserts such as the bougatsa
($6), a superb choice
made with delicate semolina
custard nestled in a crisp
phyllo pastry, served warm
with honey and dusted with
cinnamon and powdered
sugar. Combine dessert
with a cup of the venue’s
sensational Greek-Turkish
