Port not doing enough to monitor dolphins – marine biologist • By Louis Day A MARINE biologist has criticised the Lyttelton Port Company’s use of a single observer to monitor Hector’s dolphins in the harbour. LPC is currently piling for its new cruise ship berth. It has promised to cease all pile driving activity when Hector’s dolphins come within 450m of the berth. However, Otago University marine biology professor Liz Slooten said the majority of dolphins are likely to be undetected by a single observer. “With one person looking, you are only going to see a small fraction of the dolphins that are out there.” Prof Slooten said this could cause a lot of dolphins to be vulnerable to hearing loss. “They use sound for everything – that’s why people often say a deaf dolphin is a dead dolphin.” Prof Slooten said the size of the safety zone also makes it difficult to detect the dolphins. “The probability of detecting Hector’s dolphins drops quite significantly with distance,” she said. “At about 100m you only see about 60 per cent (of Liz Slooten the dolphins), and about 200m you only see a third, and at 400m you would only see about 14 per cent of the dolphins.” LPC strategic engagement manager Phil De Joux said he is confident its current plan will mitigate the impacts of piling on the dolphins. “We have worked at putting together this plan with a group of experts with years of experience from multiple disciplines.” Mr De Joux said 287 dolphins have been spotted since it started piling at the end of last year. Boy racer barrier at marina • By Louis Day BARRIER ARMS have been installed at the entrance to the Te Ana Marina car park (right) to prevent boy racers disturbing residents at night. Residents have complained about boy racers revving engines late at night and early in the morning, prompting the Lyttelton Port Company, which owns the marina, to install the barrier arms. They will remain open during the day so vehicles can access the car park and the Woolstore area, but will be closed from 9.30pm to 5.30am. Marina berth-holders will be able to access the car park 24 hours a day using their swipe key, and the exit arm is automated so vehicles can exit at any time.
