But I can only assume Kim Akbarian (Simple Message To Ryde Councillors, 12/12/18) has her head in the clouds, like the reality TV Kim of the same ancestry, because her comments only highlight a willingness to believe anything she reads. Journalists - like all of us - can make mistakes, be incompetent or fail in their duty to scrutinise more often than you think. That’s why they’re often used to do the dirty work of politicians keen to politicise processes. More recently, mainstream reports about the ongoing persecution - in the courts - of former Ryde Mayor Ivan Petch were so off the mark, you needed to read The Weekly Times’ coverage to understand there’s much more to the story and be reminded he was cleared of two other allegations last year, made out to be sinister and serious, but in reality baseless. But let’s get back to Ms Akbarian’s comments and specifically: “winner of the most code of conduct breaches award”. The single code of conduct you’re referring happened years ago and brought my code of conduct tally to a total of one! That’s where it’s remained, putting me on an even keel with several other councillors. On the other hand, I am the proud winner of the award for speaking up for my constituents and calling out abuse of ratepayer funds, including any staffer not meeting expectations while council rewards them with a more than generous salary. My record in working with the community to ensure council delivers in the areas that matter, speaks for itself. The real story about the altercation with our former “female general manager” has never been told, especially when my 11-page submission was completely ignored. She also signed off on that councillor receiving legal funding through council’s insurance policy, against council’s expenses policy and NSW Government guidelines. I didn’t read that in the paper. And when she suddenly made an unusual, abrupt 2pm departure to another council job, did anyone ask why and how? Everyone’s job was on the line at the time, so she was for some reason being rewarded. I wonder why? To add insult to injury, she’s now poaching some of our staff to shore up her reputation at Georges River Council. What is cause for concern is the code of conduct sideshow to which you refer, involved one common play-er, the current Mayor. He was happy to facilitate the former GM’s political games with a code of conduct complaint which he also found politically convenient. That cost ratepayers more than $10,000. And it’s no surprise he’s also behind another code of conduct complaint against Clr Lane, to defend himself against criticism and suppress freedom of speech. Add another $50k to the tab for that. Councillor ROY MAGGIO Ryde Howard’s Aged Care legacy Dear Sir, John Howard’s change to the Aged Care Act in 1997 is his legacy that now needs a Royal Commission. Submissions are requested until June. As a nurse who worked for thirty years in nursing homes I wish to inspire anyone who was negatively affected since that time to join me by submitting their experiences to this long awaited “commission” into aged care. Providers were given selfregulation in 1997 that gave us excessive workloads due to cuts in staffing levels which have resulted in compromised care to the elderly. A $500 million cut was his initial step towards aged care neglect. Through cuts like this the Liberal Party is always economically proud. The industry now screams out for transparency and accountability. It must be noted that this Royal Commission announcement the day before the ABC’s Four Corners investigation into aged care was followed the next week by sudden share sell-offs by big listed “for profit” corporations. Over immigration a Ponzi schemed Dear Sir, Mark Newman’s responses to my letters in the TWT usually make me laugh but the last one had me in stitches. He claims that we need more and more migrants because we are an ageing population and we need the tax revenues they purportedly generate to cover the costs. What a simplistic childish argument that is. I assume you realize Mark that these migrants now flooding in from Asia, the Indian sub continent and the Middle East will not stay young forever and they will also grow old and one day rely on some sort of Centrelink payment. It makes no sense (like your argument) to keep flooding our country with more and more migrants to cover for the ageing population. When should this over population madness stop, when we reach 50 million,100 million or 200 million Mark? Our dry mostly uninhabited continent can’t take much more. Our capital cities are suffering from over congestion and poor planning that is affecting our once good way of life. As a consequence, ethnic enclaves and ethnic gangs abound. Look at countries like Sweden, Denmark and Norway. They purposely have small stable populations and they maintain excellent standards of living and social security systems. I am glad you are not the Minister for Immigration Mark because what you propose is nothing but a Ponzi scheme in my opinion. Few delegates arrived by bicycle or solar-powered plane – a fleet of at least 100 commercial, private and charter aircraft brought them at a cost estimated at US$57 Milliions. When the costs of hotels, ground transport, food, entertainment, air conditioning and office services are added, the bill is likely to top $500 Millions Australian taxpayers supported 46 junketeers. Now these Chicken Littles are back home spreading climate scare stories and lecturing locals on not overspending on Christmas presents. There is a bright side – all that carbon dioxide emitted by planes, cars, buses, heaters, stoves, beer, champagne and Poland’s coal-fired power stations will help global plant growth. The Liberal Party for the first time in Hunters Hill Council’s history, at the last election, ran endorsed candidates. It is reasonable to assume they were financed and supported by their Party and are expected to follow party policy. The Liberal Party still has a policy seeking to drastically reduce the number of councils in Sydney and a policy of denying councillors any real role in strategic planning and decisionmaking concerning developments. It has shown by its words and actions that it does not believe in local democracy. * * * NOT SATISFIED with their Party’s flawed and failed bid to forcibly merge Hunters Hill Council, two Liberal endorsed councillors are now in my view attempting to discredit Council and its councillors. Council is making significant steps to ensure that it is sustainable and efficient and is in the process of improving its connectivity, transparency, services and financial outcome. The Loch Ness Monster sighted by our Hunters Hill icon painter THE LOCH NESS MONSTER makes a dramatic appearance in the latest work released by world renowned local icon painter Michael Galovic this week. Galovic has exhibited his works at All Saints Anglican Church in Hunters Hill and his latest icon of Saint Columba and the Loch Ness Monster has been commissioned for St Patrick’s Catholic seminary in Manly. It depicts the legend of the 6th Century Saint at Loch Ness where he saved the life of a disciple (Lugne) who had been seized by the monster. It is the first documented sighting of the monster and the legend recalls how St Columba bravely rowed out into Loch Ness, made the Sign of the Cross on the swirling waters and forbade the monster to attack Christians. Michael Galovic took his inspiration from a visit to Loch Ness in Scotland and while the waters of Loch Ness are mostly calm, he opted to represent the event as raging torrent with high waves and a menacing red monster. “Because iconography draws on myths and legends as much as it does on history, I decided to depict this famous legend as dramatically as possible,” Michael Galovic told The Weekly Times. “It recalls icons of Christ and icons of Saint Nicholas with raging seas and of course icons of Saint George with a fiery red dragon. “Everyone, of course, is free to have their own interpretation of this icon, whether it be Christianity’s victory over paganism or the triumph of good over a menacing evil.” Traditional Catholic images of Saint Columba depict him in the habit of a medieval monk but Michael Galovic Michael Galovic’s new icon of Saint Columba and the Loch Ness Monster.
