Readers respond to a Bay
Harbour News article about
a note left on the doorstep
of several dog owners in
Lyttelton threatening to call
dog control
Kaye Le Fleur – What’s
wrong with that note? I have had
a few dogs and if I received a note
like that I would
take responsibility
and make sure my
dog was not left
alone and getting
bored, I would
make sure the dog
would not be able to
wander, and be very
happy that someone
had taken the time
to notify me before notifying the
authorities. Nothing worse than
repeated barking dogs, dog poo
and wandering dogs. Just be a
responsible owner, simple.
Philip Baker – If the dog is
out roaming then fair enough.
Jade Mulcahy – Brilliant
idea. Most dog owners think
their dog is lovely and think
everyone else does too – wrong.
Good thing to do to avoid
unnecessary confrontation, at
least they didn’t just ring dog
control first.
Ashleigh Jarden – Keep
your dogs on your property and
you won’t have an issue.
Quail Island
Adventures
Get the kids into nature and head to
Quail Island! A great day trip to a real
island with a fascinating history, in the
heart of Lyttelton Harbour. Just a 15
minute ferry ride from Lyttelton.
Book the DOC hut to stay overnight
(via DOC website).
Cassey Millward – I
understand the roaming, as
that is a safety issue and no way
should dogs be taking themselves
on little adventures. But most
dogs bark a few times throughout
the day. I have two dogs and
they bark at each other when
they are playing or if someone
arrives. I have neighbours either
side who also have
dogs that bark. None
persistently, but a few
times throughout
the day you will
hear barking for
short periods of
time. People mow
lawns and cut hedges
through the day. You
can’t expect silence
throughout the day, it’s totally
unreasonable. I am very grateful
for the neighbours I have, as
some people sound like a total
nightmare.
Cathryn Rose Creamer –
Fair enough if a dog is roaming,
but someone trying to nap in
the afternoon and dogs barking
– get ear plugs. Don’t want to
live near dogs? Then move into
the country where your closest
neighbours are 500m away.
James Boswell – All of
the things in the letter apply to
almost every cat owner I know
too. I’m not condoning the
behaviour of the owner of this
Jonnie F. Omen – People go
Fire rages, homes at risk
more than anything leaving a
Anna Barclay – Well to be
fair, keep your dog on your own
property is a pretty reasonable
request, considering the dog’s
own safety and the safety of
others.
Lou Skinner – I’ve had this
problem before and believe me
you don’t always want to have
a nice “chat” to the owners. If
you have animals take
contemporary
care of
them. Roaming dogs aren’t just a
nuisance, they are jazzalso at risk of
getting hurt. I think the note is a
great idea.
roams, call the pound.
