FRONTS FORMER SNIPER MAKES HOMECOMING
JASON ROBERTSON PLAYS HIS FIRST GAME AT LEON’S CENTRE AS THE OPPOSITION
K
ingston fans were lucky enough to see Jason
Robertson’s talents on display every Friday night
for more than three seasons. Tonight, they will witness
those talents one more time but this time it will
be with Jason wearing enemy colours. .
Robertson joined the IceDogs, along with fellow
former Frontenacs defenceman Jacob Paquette, on
November 20, 2018. They were traded for Billy Constantinou,
Ian Martin and 11 draft picks in the first
big trade of the OHL season. Since acquiring Robertson
and Paquette the IceDogs have gone 18-4-3-0.
Robertson was a fan favourite while in Kingston.
His on ice talents spoke for themselves. He scored
124 goals which puts him fourth on the Kingston
Frontenacs all-time roster. He also had 114 assists
for a total of 238 points, good enough for tenth on the
all-time roster. His off ice efforts were just as impres-
sive. Robertson was always willing to sign an autograph
or interact with fans. He was usually the first
to volunteer for public appearances or school visits.
Although the Frontenacs lost some experience
in the deal, both Ian Martin and Billy Constantinou
picked up where Jason and Jacob left off when it
comes to off ice activities. For two young men that
are fairly new to the league, they are fantastic when
it comes to fan interactions. It will be exciting to see
them develop on the ice over the next few seasons.
The Frontenacs have not been able to defeat the
IceDogs yet this season. In the last meeting between
the two squads, Niagara scored an empty net goal
in the closing minutes to secure a 6-3 victory at the
Meridian Centre. Brendan Bonello made 48 saves
that night, which was a new career high for him at
the time. KF

The development system in European hockey
is significantly different than it is in Canada.
Professional teams all have youth development
programs that keep kids in their system until they are
ready for the top tier. Ian Derungs was a part of that
system until this past June when he made the jump
to the OHL.
Ian Derungs was born in Frauenfeld, Switzerland,
but moved to Kloten early in his life. At 14 years old he
became a part of the youth development program for
EHC Kloten when he began playing for Kloten U15. He
scored 41 points in 30 games that year. The following
season he skipped the U16 program all together and
played for the U17 team as a 15 year old. He had 16
points in 30 games. When he returned the following
year as a 16 year old his point total took a big jump.
He scored 35 goals and 20 assists in just 39 games.
Ian continued to climb up the youth system until
the 2017-18 season. While playing for the U20
team, he was called up to “the big club” and made
his professional debut for EHC Kloten. He played

5 games, but didn’t record a point. EHC Kloten
struggled and was demoted to the Swiss League from
the National League.
After making his way through the youth system
in Switzerland and representing his country at
International tournaments 4 times, Ian decided to
make a change. He was drafted by the Kingston
Frontenacs during the 2018 CHL Import draft in June.
Starting in September, Ian would be playing hockey a
long way from home.
Not many players make their professional debut
before playing their first OHL game, but Derungs is a
rare exception. He made his OHL debut on September
20, 2018 against the Peterborough Petes. He recorded
his first goal and assist the following night during the
Frontenacs home opener against Oshawa. So far this
season Ian has recorded 8 goals and 9 assists during
his first full season playing in Canada.
Despite being a long way from home, Ian fits in
perfectly with the Canadian culture. He is a friendly,
respectful young man that is fitting in well with his new
teammates. Most importantly, he loves the game of

After a 15 year pro career, including 10 in the NHL, Kurtis Foster started his coaching career with the Peterborough Petes.
After a season as an Assistant Coach with the Petes, he made the move to Kingston to be an Assistant Coach to Jay
Varady. Kurtis was promoted to Head Coach for the 2018-19 season after Varady was hired by the Tucson Roadrunners
of the AHL.
Luca Caputi played 8 years of pro hockey and immediately joined the coaching ranks following his playing career, as an Assistant
Coach with the Guelph Storm for the 2015-16 season. After three season in Guelph, he made the move to Kingston and was
named Associate Coach of the Frontenacs this past July.
Phil Mangan played in the OHL for the Ottawa 67’s and Kingston Frontenacs before moving to the QMJHL in 2006 to join the
Moncton Wildcats. He finished his junior career with the St John’s Fog Devils. After a number of seasons in the ECHL, Mangan
joined the Kingston Frontenacs as an Assistant Coach for the 2016-17 season.
