I have had a few dogs and if I received a note like that I would take responsibility and make sure my dog was not left alone and getting bored, I would make sure the dog would not be able to wander, and be very happy that someone had taken the time to notify me before notifying the authorities. Nothing worse than repeated barking dogs, dog poo and wandering dogs. Just be a responsible owner, simple. Philip Baker – If the dog is out roaming then fair enough. Jade Mulcahy – Brilliant idea. Most dog owners think their dog is lovely and think everyone else does too – wrong. Good thing to do to avoid unnecessary confrontation, at least they didn’t just ring dog control first. Ashleigh Jarden – Keep your dogs on your property and you won’t have an issue. Freedom campers at reserve frustrate residents • By Louis Day Cassey Millward – I understand the roaming, as that is a safety issue and no way should dogs be taking themselves on little adventures. But most dogs bark a few times throughout the day. I have two dogs and they bark at each other when they are playing or if someone arrives. I have neighbours either side who also have dogs that bark. None persistently, but a few times throughout the day you will hear barking for short periods of time. People mow lawns and cut hedges through the day. You can’t expect silence throughout the day, it’s totally unreasonable. I am very grateful for the neighbours I have, as some people sound like a total nightmare. Cathryn Rose Creamer – Fair enough if a dog is roaming, but someone trying to nap in the afternoon and dogs barking – get ear plugs. Don’t want to live near dogs? Then move into the country where your closest neighbours are 500m away. James Boswell – All of the things in the letter apply to almost every cat owner I know too. I’m not condoning the behaviour of the owner of this DIAMOND Harbour residents are calling for tighter freedom camping restrictions at Stoddart Point Reserve. Residents have been frustrated by freedom campers throwing their rubbish on the ground only a few metres away from empty bins. Congestion at the reserve means it is also difficult to find a car park in the morning before commuters catch the ferry to work. Freedom campers are currently restricted to staying for up to two nights in any 30-day period in certified selfcontained vehicles. However, Diamond Harbour Community Association chairman Richard Suggate said the current restrictions were not enough. “That area is not big enough to cope with those sort of numbers. A few years ago it wasn’t a problem but now the numbers are too high.” Diamond Harbour resident Cheryl Glen said she had grown more and more frustrated after continuing to see rubbish left on the reserve by freedom campers. “There were times where the bins would be empty and there Dyers Road Landscape & Garden Supplies • Barks • Peastraw • Composts - we supply the best available • Aggregates - Chip, Round and Basecourse • Pavers & Schist products • Pungas • Decorative Stones & Landscaping Rocks • Trailer Hire first hour free with purchase • Bag & Bulk - pick up or delivered David, Carol & Mike We will deliver! dog in allowing it free roam of the neighbourhood, but why are cat owners allowed to let their cats roam the neighbourhood, and risk attacking pet birds, chasing and intimidating other cats and defecating on other people’s properties? Tina Harding – Pretty simple, be aware of your dogs – not every one is approachable. Sian Vermeer – No one would still be rubbish left on the ground.” Ms Glen said the number of freedom campers at the reserve often made it impossible for her to find a park before catching the ferry to work. “Most mornings I can’t find a park, where are we meant to park to go to catch the ferry and go to work?” City council head of strategic policy Emma Davis said the Freedom Camping Bylaw was due for a full five-year review in 2020 and the city council was unlikely to make any changes before that. A polite note stating that the dog’s noise or behaviour is unacceptable should suffice. No need for threats. Jonnie F. Feels like a courtesy more than anything leaving a note. Anna Barclay – Well to be fair, keep your dog on your own property is a pretty reasonable request, considering the dog’s own safety and the safety of others. Lou Skinner – I’ve had this problem before and believe me you don’t always want to have a nice “chat” to the owners. If you have animals take care of them. Roaming dogs aren’t just a nuisance, they are also at risk of getting hurt. I think the note is a great idea. Philip Baker – My dog has a fenced area he’s in for when I’m out. If he gets out of that area he’s still fenced in by boundary fences. Evelyn Williamson – I can never understand people who let their dog wander. I’d be worried it would get run over or cause an accident. If you love your dog you’ll keep it safe on your property. Dean Pover – If the dog constantly roams, call the pound. Heather Bevan – Dogs can be under control but still bark and it is for a reason. Not always loneliness, but could be boredom.
