LIVING
Dear Realtor,
HELP!!!! I really do not understand
what the big deal is - I only
signed a piece of paper, and I
changed my mind. My agent
took me out to view multiple
properties. I fell in love, and we
drew up the contracts (a firm
and unconditional offer). I really
thought I wanted it and it felt
right. But...later that day, I got
cold feet and changed my mind.
Not a big deal. I did not drop
off the bank draft or anything. I
only signed the paperwork. Now
everyone is really very mad and
saying that I am “contractually
obligated.” I thought there
needed to be ‘consideration’ for
the whole thing to be binding.
And, as I said, I did not drop
off the cheque. My agent said
she could try to get a ‘mutual
release.’ What the heck is that??
Is there a problem here??? What is
the big deal?! It’s only paper!!!!
Signed Indecisive or
In Hot Water??
Dear Indecisive or In Hot Water,
At this point, you might be both. The big deal is
that, yes, it’s only paper. But…what you signed
on that paper (actually, a contract) is legally
binding. Then, you submitted that contract to a
seller to review. Did you understand that what
you were signing and submitting were firm and
binding contracts? Were you aware that the tiny
printed seal on the signing page is considered
‘consideration’? By signing a contact under seal,
without conditions, you are submitting a firm and
binding offer for someone else to accept /reject/
counter. At that point, it is no longer within your
control to change your mind. They may take pity
on you and offer a mutual release, if they do not
want to move forward with someone who is no
longer wanting to complete the transaction. They
might decide to cut their losses early without
time. Or, they could hold you legally responsible to
the terms of the contract you submitted to them,
and additionally, possibly sue you for losses or
damages caused by your actions. It is much more
serious than you think. Sometimes, when buying
or leasing a property, the paperwork can seem like
a simple formality. In fact, they are very serious
terms and conditions that hold everyone involved
as strictly responsible to fulfil their obligations.
As these transactions become more common, it
is understandably easy to lose connection to the
seriousness of these contracts and the obligations
and promises held within. It is always your right
to slow down and take your time. Carefully
consider what you are signing. Make sure you
clearly understand all the terms and conditions
that you are committing to before you submit
your offer to be reviewed. Once it is out of your
hands and in the world, you are bound by those
commitments.
5 Reasons to Heat
Do you dread waking up and walking barefoot on a
cold floor? Well, If you’re in the process of planning
a renovation or building your new home, consider
installing radiant floor heating. It’s an energy efficient way to
keep warm and also, delivers a sense of comfort, especially
on those cold winter mornings. As a builder of many homes
and contractor on many rebuilds and renovations, I have
experienced radiant floor heating in other people’s homes
and first-hand in my own family’s home.
As we reach the heart of winter, I thought I’d give you
these few great reasons why radiant underfloor heating is
a good idea for you and your new home:
1
UNIFORM HEATING:
Floor heating systems heat the entire floor, which
leads to an evenly heated room, without those cold
dead spots where vents just don’t reach
2
NO NOISE:
Unlike forced air systems that use a furnace, radiant
floor systems are known for being very quiet
3
NON-ALLERGENIC:
No blowing vents, which means dust and allergens
remain undisturbed
4
ENERGY EFFICIENT:
Efficient in terms of retaining heat
5
ROOM FUNCTION:
Hydronic radiant floor heating is virtually an
invisible system
WHAT THE TECH!?!?
Hi-tech Home
Bodyguards
BY JON COHEN
TECH COLUMNIST
This month, we look at the physical
and digital things we can do
to improve security at home.
Recently, Ring, highly acclaimed for
the original Video Doorbell, released
the Ring Security System. Meant to
revolutionise your home security as
the Ring Video Doorbell did a few years
back, the Ring Security System can be
purchased online at www.ring.com.
Featuring a base station, keypad, and
a mix of sensors and motion detectors,
the nicest part is that this set-up is
made easy enough that you can install
it yourself. With no drilling or running
wires needed, the Ring Security System
is a great alternative to more costly,
traditional security systems, such
as ADT.
The Ring Alarm also offers customers
a mobile app to arm, disarm and
monitor the status of the alarm system.
Using this app, you can be alerted to
anyone entering or exiting
your home. If you want to go one
step further, Ring offers the option
of contract-free professional monitoring
which allows the alarm to be linked
up to a local security company, as well
as to the police. Lastly, options, such
as outdoor lights and the Ring Video
Doorbell, provide your home with an
additional ‘Ring of Security.’
Switching gears to the digital side of
security, I want to share, with you, a
Toronto-based company that has made
the ever-difficult world of passwords
more ‘bearable.’ Meet RememBear
(www.remembear.com), a fun, friendly,
easy-to-use password manager which
works on phone, tablet, and computer.
Like many other password managers on
the market, this freemium model is a
fully functioning password manager. At
a low cost of $3 US per month, you can
sync all your devices, and there is no
obligation to go to the premium service;
the free tier will work great.
As you might know, just recently,
Starwood hotel chain had a huge breach
in security, which allowed bad guys
access to millions of points of data,
such as emails, addresses, names, and
maybe even, credit card info. Sadly,
most of us were affected. It’s time to
change your password, and with the
cuteness offered by RememBear’s
secure and safe password manager, you
can start the new year off on the right
foot by changing passwords to improve
your personal digital security.
Lastly, take the power into your own
hands! Don’t use the same password
everywhere, don’t click on links, which
might cause your devices to
get infected, and check to see if you
have been compromised by inputting
your email address on this site:
www.haveibeenpwned.com. I truly
hope you have not been pwned
(a term meaning: someone completely
got the better of you)!
Here
Comes
the Bridal
IT’S ONE OF THE
MOST IMPORTANT
OCCASIONS IN LIFE,
and every bride wants
their wedding to be
special and unique.
Being newly engaged is
an exciting time for any
bride-to-be, dreaming of
their perfect day. Corso
Italia is a one-stop
experience for all things
bridal. A leisurely walk
down St. Clair West
presents a variety
of jewellery stores,
beauty shops, bakeries
and florists, travel agents,
tailors, and specialty
clothing for everyone in
your bridal party. “You’ll
find much more than just
your basic retail stores,”
says Alicia Vianga of
Premier Jour Fine Lingerie
& Swimwear. “I call them
boutiques because they
are all classic and unique,”
she says. “You’ll more
All Things Coming Up Wedding
than likely meet the owner
and be provided with VIP
service.” No ushering you
out the door just before
closing, and negotiating is
not unheard of.”
Alicia chose the area 10
years ago when she first
came to Canada. “One of
the first places I visited
was Corso Italia and I
was like a kid in a candy
store,” she says. “It’s an
extremely beautiful area
and has always carried all
things bridal.” Over the
years, Alicia has seen the
area lose some retailers,
but says the ones that have
moved in are unique and
provide custom goods. “We
see brides at Premier Jour
Fine Lingerie & Swimwear
for everything from the
foundations for their
wedding dress to preparing
for their honeymoon
vacation,” she says.
Zeynep Ates of Zey
Bridal has been making
custom gowns from their
St. Clair store for the
past two years, sourcing
fabrics and notions from
all over the world. “We are
completely unique from
the competition,” he says,
“because our customers
choose everything
themselves - their style,
fabric, lace, beading and
colour.” On deciding where
to open their boutique,
Zeynep, gushes, “There
was no other place in the
GTA for us. It’s a popular
place for brides because
there are so many choices
here.” She continues, “We
liked the area because it
has a lot of multicultural
customers and is always
bustling with people.”
Vivian Li and her business
partner, who opened
this past November, completely
agree. “We were

looking to be unique,” she
says. “We contemplated a
few different neighbourhoods,
but liked the multiculturalism
of the area.
We wanted people of all
backgrounds to be able to
walk by our windows and
appreciate our products.”
Happy with the decision
to settle in Corso Italia,
Vivian and her partner
further note that the area
is vibrant, with ample
parking, coffee shops, cafes
and restaurants.
Madison Vartanian, who
manages Blü Ivory Bridal
+ Evening, finds that the
recent rejuvenation of
St. Clair West has been
great for business with last
year being their busiest
yet. “As more businesses
come into the area, it
draws in more customers,”
she says. “It’s friendly
competition,” Madison
continues. “Each store has
a unique clientele based on
styles and on the way they
approach customer service.
If a few stores carry the
same designers, there will
be different styles being
careful to offer something
different for every bride.”
An important factor for the
bride-to-be when searching
for that perfect gown.
With such a wide
selection, Corso Italia is
the perfect place to park
the car and make a few
appointments in one day,
says Madison. “We want
brides to just enjoy the
experience and have a
great time. If we can help
them find their dream
dress, that’s a bonus, but
we want them to have
so much fun that they’ll
remember this experience
forever.”
applicability of loungewear in my own,
non-aristocratic life.
And yet, when my work life changed
from office-bound to work-from-home, I
unexpectedly found myself searching for
something to wear that was lovely and
comfortable.
I wasn’t going on spa dates and
ladies’ luncheons, but I was working
from the comfort of my dining room
table, taking video calls and collecting
packages at the door. I needed to look
professional, but there was no reason
for the uncomfortable waistband of my
‘office pants.’ Eventually, putting on
an underwire bra for 12 straight hours
seemed like an archaic form of torture.
I began hunting around for a
sustainable fashion solution that landed
somewhere between pyjamas and
blazers. I finally discovered my answer
last spring, at Made INLAND, where I
met Sammi Smith, the founder of Soft
Focus. After working in Canadian fashion
for 10 years, Sammi became a freelance
fashion designer and consultant. “When
I started freelancing, my fashion habits
had to change for this new way of
working,” she explains during our chat.
“There was no way I was getting dressed
up to sit on the couch with my laptop.
And I definitely didn’t want to put on a
bra! But I did want to express myself and
wear something that was beautiful and
comfortable.”
A self-professed homebody who loves
to sleep, Sammi had always joked
that if she ever started a fashion line,
it would be for “really fancy pyjamas.”
In 2017, she launched Soft Focus, a
modern loungewear brand for women
that reflects our new work-life balance.
Soft Focus is Canadian designed and
made using Tencel, a pulp-based form
of rayon sourced from sustainable forests
and made in a closed-loop facility,
for many of its flowing collared shirts,
trousers and robes. Sammi admits that
sourcing sustainable textiles is a challenge
for a small brand (some pieces are
not Tencel), but she is dedicated to using
plant-based fabrics and scaling in a responsible,
sustainably-focused manner.
“Knowing the inside of the fashion
industry like I do, I wanted to do good
with my brand,” she says. “There
was no point in starting a clothing
company unless I could be making
the best choices for myself, the
people making the clothing, and
the end consumer.”
I ask Sammi why she thinks
now is the time for this modern
take on loungewear and her
answer surprises me. “There
is something very powerful
about a woman who is
comfortable. These aren’t
costume pjs, but beautiful
clothes for women, about
women. And I think
that women who are
comfortable can likely
do anything.”
To that I say, let’s
give it a try and see
what happens.
STYLING
Make a Big Impact
with Small Luxuries
FABULOUS FINISHINGS
BY SARA BEDERMAN
PRINCIPAL, SARA BEDERMAN DESIGN
Kitchens and bathrooms are
among my clients’ mostrequested
renovations. As
a designer, I find that upgrades to
these rooms typically yield the best
return on investment. That said,
the level of initial investment is
also generally higher. Beyond the
big-ticket items, such as flooring,
countertops, cabinets, fixtures,
and appliances, the fine details are
instrumental to the overall look.
Here are some small, yet impactful
details you can make around your
kitchen and bathroom areas.
Remember: No detail is too small:
HARDWARE
If you’re looking to crank up your
home’s #trending factor, hardware is
a great upgrade that won’t break the
bank. Choose impactful knobs and pulls
to transform minimal cabinet fronts
and drawers. When it comes to drapery
hardware, crystal is the next best thing.
Look for quality, handmade European
drapery finials, from companies like
Deco & Deco, which offer Murano glass
to a full range of metal finishes that
can certainly add the right amount of
sparkle to any space.
PLUMBING FIXTURES
Up the ante in your kitchen or
bath with fabulous faucets. These
fixtures are prominent enough to
catch the attention of a wandering
eye, whether for their unusual size,
shape, features, or finish.
#Trending: When it comes to
finishes, I have two words for you:
unlacquered brass. This is known
as a ’living finish,’ naturally ageing,
and developing a dark patina over
time. If you like the old world
aesthetic, you’ll want to check
out Victoria + Albert’s Florin and
Staffordshire Collections.
If your tastes are more
contemporary, you can’t go wrong
with stainless steel plumbing
fixtures. Victoria + Albert’s Soriano
Collection features a sleek, superslim
silhouette.
LIGHTING
Lighting is one of my favourite elements to decorate with.
It’s one of those transformative elements that can serve
to inspire the style of the whole room. Chandeliers have
traditionally made their home in formal dining rooms,
but they’ve become a mainstay in modern kitchens and
en suite bathrooms. After all, if you’re going to pamper
yourself, what better place to splurge? Choose something
that suits the scale of the room. As a general rule, add
the width and length of your room in feet. This number is
the recommended diameter of your chandelier, in inches.
For example, a 15-by-15-ft. room can handle a 13-inch
chandelier. Always look to selecting high-quality, durable
fixtures from companies like Hudson Valley.
Tip: When choosing metals for fixtures and furnishings,
be bold! Mix it up. Particularly trendy right now are gold
and rose gold, and black, which is right up your alley if
your aesthetic goal is luxury.
Hardware, fixtures and lighting are relatively easy and
inexpensive to replace, in the grand scheme of things -
even at the luxury price point. This is great news for those
who like to update their home every couple of years. When
you’ve had your fill of gold, bronze, brass, you’re free to
move on to the next hot trend.
You don’t have to break the bank to stay on top of the
trend du jour. You only have to know where to incorporate
those trends to make the right impact.
EATING
Food of the Gods and
‘Mere Mortals’ at Adonis
BY EZRA BRAVES
Scarborough’s Adonis (from
Québec, and part of the Metro
family) falls into my category
of visiting local grocery stores
when travelling. While many fetishise
the food scene, latest and greatest
restaurants, and by some miracle,
receive an actually good word-ofmouth
spot or top 10 (highly curated
and self-congratulatory) TripAdvisor
suggestions, nothing gives me more
pleasure than walking up and down
the aisles of this local - my middleaged
idea of fun (I used to be fun,
sigh) - maybe my three-kid, constant
marathon existence, is elevated by my
blissful grocery store wanderings - in
these moments, I realise the inspiration
for zombie movies – I have become one.
My kids generally hate doing errands
with me (because I’m not fun anymore),
so I’ve changed the name from errands
to food adventures. Seems to work.
I’m tired of the new status quo where
all parents need to be their kids’
entertainers – somehow we’ve failed
as parents if we don’t give our kids the
space to grow untethered and expand
their imagination. Take away their
screens, I say. Take them to Adonis.
Bread is fundamental. It unites and
connects us in the present, and to our
past. Despite what bread has become,
in commercial ovens across the globe,
warm, fresh bread still has the power
to penetrate deeply into all our senses
and memories. It comforts us. That is
one of the many reasons I love Adonis
(despite barely being able to digest
wheat anymore).
While I should be quietly protesting
yet another mass-produced, factorymade,
non-artisan-barely-resemblingfood-product,
here, it is magic. Here,
it is the heart of this grocery store
body-of-perfection – the pita is Adonis.
My kids are mesmerised. I’m brought
back to my polka-dot-behind-the-door
childhood of watching how things
work. We wait silently beside the
entrance to this brilliant and gleaming,
clear, acrylic structure smack in the
centre of the store – inside, the twisting,
multilevel conveyor belt highways
carry flat raw discs on their journey
from dough to emerge from the raging
hot ovens as puffed pillows of pita
perfection. Out of Hades’ heat and
covered in a fine dust of white flour,
a baker comes to the door - he knows
why we are here, and I feel a touch
of shame that the bags of pita baked
30 min earlier simply won’t do for my
west-end secretly hipster self. I drop
my head slightly, and with the weight
of not wanting to disappoint my kids,
I say, “Four bags…please?” Wordlessly,
he hands them over and I feel a surge
of victory. I can’t rip the bag open fast
enough. I frantically head to the rows of
hummus, open the cap, rip off a piece of
the still warm pita, take a giant scoop,
and urgently shove it in my mouth. Oh
yeah, and then I give some to my kids
– there is nothing civilised about this
moment, and I am unapologetic.
Usually, I avoid the centre of a
grocery store. It is the place where the
evil, processed-almost-resemblingfoods
lie. I’m tired of having to fight
hidden sugars and all corn-related
by-product ingredients patiently hiding
in my cookies only to surface years
later as something carcinogenic – these
are the dark sections of the grocery
store where my soul turns grey. This
is not my experience at Adonis. Each
aisle is another playground of tastes
and excitement for me - pyramids of
olive oils, mountains of fresh Ontario
produce, glistening rows of olives,
fresh nuts, feta cheeses, and endless
fields of baklava, tanned and perfectly
flaky, crunching, dripping in honey
and roasted pistachios – there is real
food here. This is where, at long last, I
found THE best za’atar and couscous in
the city – and an honourable mention
to fresh grape leaves, I’ve been looking
everywhere. I need them for my
homemade fermented pickles!
Mythological Adonis – the
embodiment of youth, virility, and
perfection. The bar is set high for
us mortals, from which we can all
measure our own insecurities (well,
my deeper insecurities, anyway
– sometimes I hate mythology!).
sometimes I hate mythology!). Where
many brave souls dare to venture, the
clouds open and a beam of light shines
down on the torch at the corner of
Warden and Eglinton. You can almost
hear the choral crescendo as the light
beams through, and every time I leave,
I’m already planning my next trip.
WELL-BEING
WHAT TO DO WITH THAT LUMP OF COAL?
Charcoal BY DIANA AZIZ
A New Beauty Trend
Not sure what to do with
that lump of coal you found
in your stocking this past
Christmas? Try eating it,
or putting it on your face.
Charcoal is the latest health and
beauty trend. Whether you drink it
in a latte, brush your teeth with it, or
luxuriate in a facial peel, charcoal is it.
As Canadians, we tend to wither
and burrow when the temp dips below
zero. February can be a harsh month
for us. The indulgence and stress of
the holiday season can make us feel
sluggish and tired. Lack of sunshine
and cold air can make us feel less
energetic and motivated. At this time,
more than ever, we need to nourish and
replenish our bodies, inside and out.
Activated charcoal has been used for
years to improve intestinal health and
as a medical aid to induce vomiting
in cases of overdose or chemical
poisoning. Presently charcoal is used
to whiten teeth, ramp up digestion,
remove impurities, andn reduce fine
line lines on the skin.
Charcoal peels are the latest
beauty fix. Top shelf beauty spas
and dermatologists in areas such as
Yorkville and North Toronto are offering
charcoal peels and facials. If you
would rather mask up in the comfort
of home, Shoppers Drug Mart is one of
many retailers that sell ‘do it yourself’
charcoal-based beauty products by
luxury brands such as Clinique and
Elizabeth Arden, as well as more
modestly priced products by companies
such as Garnier, St. Yves, and Biore.
Shoppers’ signature Life Brand
charcoal facial retails for only $6.99.
As the peels and masks detoxify and
purify the skin, ingesting charcoal does
the same for your gut. Charcoal helps
rid the body of unwanted toxins and
substances by binding and eliminating
them before the body can absorb them.
The activated charcoal can also assist
in reducing bloat and gas, as well as
promoting kidney health.
Black Lattes, Goth Lattes, or Charcoal
Lattes are a great way to take charcoal
in. The hottest thing on the café scene
since turmeric lattes can be
found at hipster cafes such
as Sam James Coffee Bar
on Harbord St. and
Bayleys Brew Bar
on Bathurst St.
Don’t forget your
teeth! Another
big trend is
to clean your
pearly whites
with activated
charcoal
powder.
Products such
as Carbon Coco
or InVitamin
Charcoal Teeth
and Gum Cleanser
are applied directly
on the teeth by
way of a dampened
toothbrush. If you
prefer a more traditional
method, charcoal-based
toothpaste is readily available
in most health food stores in
the GTA. Either way, brushing with
activated charcoal is deemed to balance
natural oral bacteria, prevent cavities,
restore minerals to the teeth, and
improve bad breath.
Other great products are charcoal
cleansing bars, which combat blemishes
and detoxify the skin, and charcoal
deodorants that are a natural way to
neutralise body odour.
I think I may try the deodorant next.
What are you going to try?
WELL-BEING
Couples Yoga
Achieving Harmony
through Practiced
Partnerships
BY SAMANTHA BEDERMAN
Like music is the language of
love, I would say yoga is the
language of rhythm. Playing
an instrument is feeling your
groove like an out-of-body pulse. When
the body transforms into the pendulum
of the desired tempo, this flow, or
cadence, has the power to balance the
ever-fluctuating mind. In the same way
that melody and harmony need each
other to perform magic, a yoga practice
can offer you similar experiences and
results when practised with a partner.
Couples yoga, partner yoga, and
private yoga are trends that are strongly
tied back to teaching techniques.
However, like your metronome, our
bodies can communicate in harmony
with other bodies’ physical connection
and touch. The aura and energy
created between two bodies and souls
heightens the secrets yoga has to offer
when practised safely and intelligently.
The purpose of partner yoga is to
deepen and expand your practice (in
more ways than one!). Partnering your
poses with another person, physically,
will provide a resistance element for
your practice. This allows for your
muscles to soften and stretch while
your partner’s resistance helps your
limbs and joints stay in the pose
longer, achieving deeper expressions
of familiar poses. Relying on a partner
also challenges the mind to change
tempo and emotionally trust your body
in another person’s hands. Working
together in this manner creates bonds
and builds trust.
Using orchestrated movement and
meditating with your partner, (lover,
child, friend, practitioner), contributes
to your practice both chemically
and psychologically, causing this
phenomenon called entrainment.
Entrainment happens when people
or nature unite in a similar rhythm.
Couples yoga actually helps us reach
stronger and higher brainwave
synchronisation. We already know
the synchronicity of rhythm with
our organic body happens when
musicians reach their flow. Similarly,
when you focus on the breath, body,
and movement of another person in a
yoga practice, your physical body will
entrain with the other. It’s a beautiful
practice that creates harmony within
any couple.
Now that’s not to say partnering in
class, as a teaching technique, is for
everyone. Just like opera and classical
music is not on everyone’s playlist.
But, often you will hear a teacher
instruct everyone to find a partner.
As a student of yoga, I have to admit,
having experienced that call to find
a partner, the varying degrees of
wariness and health concerns washed
over me like a tidal wave. What if my
partner or I slipped and fell? What if I
had bone density issues I didn’t know
about? What if my partner outweighed
me, or I her? What about my bad
knee? Concerned about my safety, and
uncomfortable turning to the person
next to me and saying, “It’s nice to meet
you. I’m now going to place my bare feet
on your thighs,” I immediately began
to cultivate this new relationship with
myself and a perfect stranger to trust.
Full disclosure: My approach to
partnering exercises in yoga class
has generally been… not to return
to that teacher’s class! However, the
connection, unity, depth and freedom
I have felt with partner activity goes
beyond what I can achieve on my own
sometimes. Isn’t that just the secret
to a great marriage or any loving and
passionate relationship? Couples yoga
isn’t just an activity for two lovers
to share to elevate their intimacy.
Partnering your yoga practice with
another yogi is a true test of maturity,
in and out of your yoga relationship.
Next class, when the teacher calls for
partnering, be open with your practice
to truly experience what it means to
become entrained and create harmony
with your body. Namaste
The Modern Moms’
Guide to Calming
Stress – Part 2 of 3
Simplicity in Self-Care
BY SINDY SHIN, ND CREATOR OF THE CALM MAMA METHOD
Have you ever wanted to build self-care habits, but you’re
not sure where to start? This can especially happen when it
feels like you have very little time for yourself and when the
majority of your time is spent taking care of others. When
I find myself being pulled in many directions and time feels limited, I
find getting back to the basics of self-care, is the best place to start.
I saw an Instagram post the other day that read: Don’t forget to drink
water and get some sun. You’re basically a houseplant with more complicated
emotions. It made me giggle because, it’s sort of true! What keeps us
alive and well is reflected in nature. Water to grow, nourishment to
flourish, air to breathe, and connection to nature to thrive. It also
reminds us of how simple self-care can be, such as drinking water.
On average, we need to be drinking 30 mL of water per kg of body
weight. What that looks like, is just over 2 L for 68 kg (or 150 lbs), and
you’ll need more if you’re an active person. Hydration is essential for our
health, but is so often overlooked. We tend to see things as being more
complicated than they really are. So, I’d like to share three simple, selfcare
strategies that you can get started on right away, and that will make
a real difference in how well you feel.
Self-care is essential when you’re busy trying to balance it all. It
might feel impossible sometimes to find the time, but taking a minute
to hydrate, a break to eat a meal, and a moment to treat yourself, truly
helps release stress - mentally, emotionally and physically. Integrating
simple self-care into each day has been a saving grace for me, as I
navigate my busy mom life. I hope you feel supported as you embrace
these self-care tips in your life, too.
In health and well-being.
3 Ways to Embrace
Simplicity in
Self-Care Today:
1
FILL
2
NOURISH
3
TREAT
YOUR CUP, LITERALLY. Aim to
consistently drink water throughout
the day. If you’re already a superstar
with drinking water, then keep it up!
If you’re behind in reaching optimal
hydration of at least 2 L of water daily,
start slowly by simply increasing your
water intake by 1-2 cups this week.
Gradually increase and before you
know it, hydrating well will be a
natural habit.
TO FLOURISH. Eat your
meals and snack when you need. The
term ‘hangry’ comes from irritability
that stems from hunger, and we all
know being hangry isn’t good for
anyone. Be sure to nourish and fuel
with food and take the time to sit when
you eat. Find pleasure in your meals
and release any guilt that might be
associated with your food choices.
Simply by slowing down enough to sit
and enjoy your meal, you are already
doing wonders for your overall state
of well-being.
YOURSELF. Do something really
nice for yourself today. For me, it might
look like listening to my favourite music
while doing nothing else, enjoying a
quiet cup of tea, calling a friend I miss,
or grabbing that latte that I might
normally skip, but really love. Whatever
this looks like is completely up to you.
Diary of a New Mama
The Challenges of Postpartum Recovery
BY JAIME SLAVIN
I often hear women asking each
other about their pregnancy
symptoms and birth stories. I
was asked this a lot. Yet, I can’t
ever recall being asked about my
postpartum experience. What was
my care like? What did my body feel
like? How long did it take to recover?
So, I decided to share, in case there are other moms who
had similar situations. This is not about postpartum
mental health. This is about postpartum care for your body
(although, the two are often intertwined).
I will start with a quick recap of my pregnancy and
birth experience to get to the postpartum story. In short, I
was followed by an OBGYN, and had a healthy pregnancy
(although, I needed iron infusions in my last trimester).
I had a vaginal birth with intense back contractions
starting at 5pm, and baby was delivered by 5am. Opted
for an epidural at 7cm dilated (was only able to get that
far without pain medications, thanks to my doula and my
hypnobirthing breathing techniques). Needed stitches. That
is where I feel the care for me ended. I had my six-week
follow-up appointment, in which I was asked if I was in
pain (I wasn’t, at that time), if I was feeling depressed, and
what form of contraception I planned on using. That was
it. I was shocked. Let me add, I really admired my OBGYN,
and loved being in her care during my pregnancy (she was
not the doctor who delivered our baby). Yet the aftercare
wasn’t easily available, and I was really surprised by this.
I am sure it is a function of our over-burdened health care
system and not of her practice.
Eight weeks after my delivery, I started experiencing
urogynecological issues. I was no longer considered
a patient of my OBGYN (although I got lucky and they
squeezed me in). Ultimately, I had to wait to see a specialist
(five-month wait time!). I had to do my own health research
and advocacy. I am not writing this for pity. I am sharing
this because during a time when we are at our most tired,
our energy is reserved for caring for our newborn; finding
the energy to care for yourself is a huge challenge. My
hope is that if women ask each other more about their
postpartum recovery, our collective stories can lead to
action, which in turn, can have an impact on how our
health care system prioritises the health of new moms.
HOOKED ON BOOKS
Teach Kids to Sprinkle
Kindness like Confetti
BY JOANNE SALLAY
EDUCATION COLUMNIST
I
love the popular saying, ‘Sprinkle kindness like confetti.’
It’s also a teacher favourite, popularly displayed on
classroom doors (including at my son’s school). While
the month of February is famous for love and friendship,
it is also host to Random Acts of Kindness Day on the 17 th
of February.
In my opinion, children can never experience too much
kindness. While there are countless ways to encourage
empathy, compassion, and thoughtfulness, I believe books
are great tools to reinforce and celebrate these themes.
Here are 4 sweet suggestions that will inspire kindness:
Dr. Seuss’s You Are Kind:
Featuring Horton the Elephant
By Dr. Seuss
AGES
3-7
This tiny book has a big message told by Horton the
elephant: “A person’s a person, no matter how small.”
It’s a great intro for little learners about the qualities of
kindness, and it’s also a wonderful gift for fans of the
Dr. Seuss kindness classic, Horton Hears a Who!
I Walk with Vanessa:
A Story about a Simple Act of Kindness
By Kerascoët
AGES
4-8
This unique children’s book is told without words, and
entirely with pictures. It follows Vanessa, the new girl
in school, who experiences bullying and loneliness. A caring
classmate at school notices and with a simple act, influences
a positive change. The back of the book also outlines helpful
tips about bullying for both children and adults. It’s a feelgood
story that promotes how a supportive bystander can
make a difference by making kindness contagious.
Cara’s Kindness
Written by Kristi Yamaguchi, Illustrated by John Lee
AGES
4-8
This picture book is perfect for illustrating the pay it
forward message to children. Fun fact: the author is
ice-skating champion Kristi Yamaguchi. In this story, Cara
is one caring cat, and it will come as no surprise that she
likes to skate. She also strives to pass on kindness to her
friends. Her positive attitude inspires other good deeds until
ultimately, returning full circle to Cara. This pick is ideal for
Random Acts of Kindness Day and all-year long.
Wonder
Written by R.J. Palacio
AGES
8-12
Wonder, with its core message to “choose kind,” has a
permanent space on my bookshelf. I have featured it
before, but given the nature of this issue, I wanted to share
it with you again. This chapter book follows the personal
journey of fifth grader Auggie Pullman, who was born with
a facial deformity and hopes to be treated like a regular kid.
For readers who want to delve deeper, the original is also
followed by three equally special companion books.
