This year’s instalment will be the 45th time the iconic event has been held. Thousands upon thousands of Cantabrians have ran, walked, skateboarded, pushed prams and hobbled to the line over the decades. On page 10 today, we talk to some of the people who will take part this year. The City2Surf is not a race – but many do consider it that, and that’s fine. Being first across the line is a great incentive. For others, taking on the City2Surf can be the start or end of a personal goal from a fitness perspective or just to say I’ve done it. Six loud diesel generators were replaced by a more sustainable power connection box. THe box was installed by Orion and commissioned at a ceremony last Thursday following concerns from Common Ground about the noise and fumes the generators were creating. Common Ground coordinator Jane Harrison said she wanted the space to be environmentally and noise-friendly, but the funds had not been available to achieve this when it first opened. “We always wanted to have electricity and we didn’t want diesel-burning generators . . . the cost was just going to be absolutely prohibitive.” Ms Harrison said Burwood Ward city councillor Glenn Livingstone had come together with Orion, Safe Power and Nova Energy to install the power box for free. She said this would now ensure the surrounding environment and residents’ ears were looked after. “We’ve worked really closely with our neighbourhood and with our immediate neighbours SUSTAINABLE: A ceremony to commission a power connection box was attended by Common Ground co-ordinator Jane Harrison, Orion general manager and stakeholder Paul Deavoll and Burwood Ward city councillor Glenn Livingstone. to make sure that everything we do is going to just work really positively for the community.” The new power box will now run the mobile food and coffee vans, which operate on the site. It has been a popular community gathering space for residents in the east since it was set up by the Common Ground Collaborative. Orion general manager customer and stakeholder Paul Deavoll said: “It’s great to be able to support the South Brighton community to create a more sustainable hub for local people to get together.” City Care also donated its time and machinery to level and landscape the site when it was first opened. Burwood Ward city councillor Glenn Livingstone said: “This site has proven a real success for the local community. It is great to see the noisy generators go, and landscaping making a real community gathering place. “Orion and City Care’s contributions have made a big difference for a community that’s been through hard times.” Local News Now In Brief Fire rages, homes at risk HOUSE BUS FIRE A house bus was destroyed by fire on Pages Rd, near Breezes Rd, on February 3. Fire and Emergency New Zealand received multiple calls about a house fire and on arrival, three crews found a house bus burning. It was not treated as suspicious and no one was inside the bus at the time of the blaze. CRICKET WICKET East Shirley Cricket Club has successfully applied to develop a junior cricket pitch with an artificial wicket on the site of the former bowls club in Burwood Park. The project was given the go-ahead at a Coastal-Burwood Community Board meeting last week. Currently, there are no junior facilities on the park meaning junior teams play and carry out most of their training elsewhere. RUGBY CLUB LIGHTS Parklands Rugby Football Club has received approval from the Coastal-Burwood Community Board to install and upgrade on-field lighting at Queenspark Reserve. This will involve the installation of two new lighting poles and the upgrade of two existing poles on the field.
