HARD WORK on and off the
rugby field is paying off for
17-year-old David Ni.
The Christchurch Boys’ High
first XV blindside flanker will
head to South Africa to play in
the World Schools Festival next
month.
He has been mowing lawns,
selling raffles and doing other
odd jobs to help find $4500 to
pay for his share of the trip.
But mowing lawns and doing
other jobs may soon take a back
seat for David. A professional
rugby career and the big money
that goes with it is David’s goal
and he may soon take his first
steps towards that.
David received a call from
CBHS rugby master Mike
Drury last week about “an agent
who wanted to have a talk about
playing rugby in Japan after
high school.”
Bid to
save bus
service to
retirement
village fails
• By Matt Slaughter
A MAIREHAU retirement village’s
11-month battle with Environment
Canterbury to save their bus
service has been lost.
ECan says it has “run out of
ideas” for a compromise, which
would satisfy residents and staff
at Diana Isaac Retirement Village
after their Orbiter service was cut
last month.
The Pegasus Post reported last
month ECan had raised the idea
of trialling a service to transport
retirement village residents to bus
stops and locations they can no
longer access.
The vehicle would have been run
by a trust and volunteers from the
village.
Village resident Graham Tate
had supported the idea but said
residents had decided this would
have simply been too much work at
their stage in life.
“An email survey of about 20 per
cent of the independent residents
within this village made it clear
that there is very little support for
the proposed ECan Village Vehicle
Community Trust model.” Mr Tate
said.
IT’S THAT time of the year again – the
countdown to the City2Surf.
This year’s instalment will be the 45th
time the iconic event has been held.
Thousands upon thousands of
Cantabrians have ran, walked,
skateboarded, pushed prams and hobbled to the line over the
decades.
On pages 6-7 today, we talk to some of the people who will
take part this year.
The City2Surf is not a race – but many do consider it that, and
that’s fine. Being first across the line is a great incentive.
For others, taking on the City2Surf can be the start or end of
a personal goal from a fitness perspective or just to say I’ve done
it. With two distances, it’s an event for everyone.
$11m Belfast campus gets go ahead
• By Jess Gibson
BELFAST SCHOOL’S new
$11 million senior campus off
Johns Rd has been given the
green light and is expected to be
finished in 2021.
The new campus is
part of the Ministry of
Education’s Christchurch
Schools Rebuild programme. It
will be built within 1km of the
current school site
on Main North Rd,
which is also set
to get a $4 million
upgrade.
The population of
Belfast is expected
Sue Elley
to double from
7500 to 15,000
by 2041, which
principal Sue Elley said was the
“catalyst” for the upgrade. “Each
year our role has been increasing
and it’s expected to keep
growing,” said Mrs Elley.
She said the decision followed
a “very positive” consultation
process last year to decide
whether the preferred option
was a two-campus model for the
existing school or an entirely
new school.
“As a community, Belfast has
a strong identity and we think
that having a school on two
sites is the best option for our
community rather than having
CAMPUS: Belfast School’s growing roll means its Main North Rd site is no longer big
enough so an additional campus will be built off Johns Rd.
two schools that would be
competing against each other,”
said Mrs Elley.
The new senior campus for
year 5-8 pupils will be built on a
new site north of Johns Rd. The
Main North Rd site will become
the junior campus for year 1-4
pupils.
“To future-proof both sites,
we anticipate that each campus
will be master-planned so that
they could accommodate up to
600 students in the long-term,”
said a Ministry of Education
spokesperson.
Mrs Elley is excited about the
new development and said she
will be working closely with the
ministry, school staff and the
board of trustees to ensure the
build runs smoothly.
“Our intention is that we will
be very strongly remaining as
one school, but we will have the
advantage of having different
types of resources that the
children can use at either site.”
An education brief discussing
the development will be
produced and distributed to the
public before the planning and
design stage begins.
Retirement village introduces
taxi and car sharing scheme
•From page 1
“Personally, I think the Village
Community Vehicle Trust
concept could well work in a
village where residents’ ages were
younger than here,” Mr Tate said.
Ryman Healthcare spokesman
David King said the age of
residents had ultimately
been behind its decision
to not support the
vehicle trust idea.
“We think that
creating a trust, which
required our residents
to drive, roster, and take
full responsibility for
their own scheduled
Graham Tate
transport service, placed a large
and unfair burden on them.”
Both Mr Tate and Ryman
Healthcare were now again
calling ECan to re-route the No
44 bus service to take it along
Philpotts Rd and closer to the
village. However, ECan senior
manager of public transport
Stewart Gibbon said Philpotts
Rd could only be accessed from
one end. Ryman Healthcare had
offered to provide a portion of its
land for a bus turnaround area to
make the detour smooth.
Mr Gibbon said this would
require the construction of “a
physical piece of infrastructure
to be built to enable a bus to do a
U-turn at the end of the street.”
This would cost $100,000 and
this, combined with the time it
would take to construct, meant
ECan did not see this as a good
option, Mr Gibbon said.
He said re-routing the No 44
also did not align with ECan’s
regional public transport plan.
“We’ve run out of ideas.
We’ve offered alternatives and
we haven’t been able to implement
those alternatives, so
there’s really not much to do.”
Mr Tate said he and other
residents were hugely upset
with ECan’s stance on this.
“Our feeling is that ECan
is unwilling to offer any accessible
bus service to the village.
Residents believe this is an unacceptable
position. It seems incredible
that probably the largest
concentration of residents in the
locality and perhaps the most in
need of public transport should
have that access taken away.”
From March, Ryman Healthcare
will be operating a village
taxi and car share scheme to
make sure residents can still
get around. One will be used
as a bookable taxi, which will
be available to get residents to
and from appointments using a
Ryman-employed driver who has
a passenger licence. The second
will be available for residents who
can drive themselves.
Stickers warn off doorknockers
• By Jess Gibson
BISHOPDALE residents fed-up
with door-to-door salespeople
will soon have a simple
solution. Every home in the
area is about to receive a ‘do not
knock’ sticker.
The campaign was launched
by Consumer NZ to educate
people about their rights when
avoiding unwanted salespeople
and mobile truck shops.
Over the next few weeks,
residents can expect a newsletter
from the Bishopdale Community
Trust which will include
a sticker and information
about the campaign from
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board member
Aaron Campbell.
A recent law change, which is
set to come into force in 2020,
will mean traders who ignore
the stickers will be fined up to
$10,000 and the company which
they represent may be liable for
up to $30,000. But, until then,
traders are still expected to take
the stickers seriously.
Bishopdale Community Trust
co-ordinator Chris Coles said he
was ‘more than happy’ to work
with Mr Campbell to get the
word out.
“In our demographic, we
have a lot of older people and a
lot of young families and they
are two particular groups that
DON’T KNOCK: Chris Coles has helped with the distribution of
Consumer NZ’s campaign stickers in Bishopdale.
are vulnerable to door-to-door
salespeople,” said Mr Coles.
Mr Campbell started pushing
hard for the distribution of
stickers after he received a
number of requests for them
following a Facebook post,
mainly from young mothers
tired of the “intrusion” from
traders who were hard to say
no to. As well as helping with
the newsletters, Mr Campbell
has been dropping stickers and
information packs at libraries
and delivering them to houses in
other areas such as Bryndwr.
Since 2014, more than 550,000
NOR’WEST NEWS
stickers have been distributed to
consumers nationwide.
A Consumer NZ survey
showed 70 per cent of its
members disliked door-to-door
salespeople and wanted them
to stop. More than 60 per cent
labelled them “annoying” and
“intrusive.”
Concern over cycleway plans
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
BUSINESSES AND residents
could be hit hard by a major
realignment of a street in
Riccarton to make way for a
cycleway.
The removal of on-street carparking,
cul-de-sacs, intersection
changes and the shifting of
bus stops could be on the cards
for Elizabeth St as part of a $39
million cycleway.
The changes are part of the
city council’s proposed South
Express Major Cycle Route
which will run from Templeton
through to the central city.
The route will travel through
Hornby, Hei Hei, Sockburn, Upper
Riccarton and Riccarton.
The potential changes have
sparked concerns for those in
the area.
The city council is calling for
public feedback on the proposal,
which is the next stage in the
$252 million major cycleway
programme.
Tony Pearson, owner of
Hamilton Motors (1995), which
is located on Elizabeth St near
Matipo St, said the proposed
loss of car parks is going to affect
his business.
“It will affect my income, it
might affect my employment
. . . there are only three of us
POTENTIAL CHANGES: Residents and businesses are
concerned over the proposed changes to Elizabeth St to make
way for the South Express Major Cycle Route.
now. Realistically it could go
down to two,” he said.
On-street parking spaces are
due to be reduced at the Matipo
St intersection along with shortterm
parking and loading zones
installed.
Mr Pearson said he can fit
eight cars onto the property and
a further six cars in the work
shop.
“That is not enough. We are
turning around more cars than
that. We need the accessibility
of putting cars on the road,” he
said.
Division St dairy owner Rae
Wang is also worried she will
lose business due to the changes.
“We think it is a waste of our
taxpayer money. It is not necessary
and not many people will
use it,” she said.
But city council planning
and delivery transport manager
Lynette Ellis said the anticipated
cycle volumes using the Riccarton
section of the cycleway is
1900 per day.
A Riccarton Community
Church spokesman said it is
still gathering information but
it does have concerns about the
likely impact of the changes.
Nearly 1000 people use the
church’s facilities throughout
the week for services, playgroups,
craft groups and its fruit
and vege co-op.
It averages about 370 people
for its weekly Sunday services.
Central Riccarton Residents’
Association acting chairwoman
Joscelyne Silcock said it is positive
for residents to be able to
come out of their door and go
onto a cycleway.
But she said she hasn’t decided
if she is for or against the cycleway
due to car parking being
a problem in the area.
“I can see cycleways being a
positive but then I am thinking
of all this money and there are
still parts of the city that really
haven’t had their fair share since
the earthquakes,” Mrs Silcock
said.
The CRRA will be making a
submission on the issue.
Mark Winsley, 49,
Bryndwr – Mr Winsley has
tackled the 14km City2Surf
event before, but this year he will
run the 6km. That’s because his
nine-year-old son, Felix, will be
running with him, along with
his partner, Janelle Clark. The
father and son have been “hiking
around the hills and jogging
around the parks” to prepare for
the event. Felix is not a novice
when it comes to running events,
having participated in the Kids’
“I walk a lot up the hills, but I
Fire rages, homes at risk
challenge – are you too?
Judith McInnes, 77 – Mrs
McInnes, who is retired, says
her participation in the 14km
event is “not a hardcore thing,
just for fun.” It will not be her
first time in the
City2Surf, having
completed the
event six or seven
times previously,
both walking
and jogging.“I do
Judith
McInnes
both walking and
jogging and it’s
just a challenge.”
Mrs McInnes goes jogging twice
a week. She likes to explore the
Harry Ell Walkway, Sign of the
Kiwi, Sign of the Takahe and
Godley Head tracks. “Often in
the past, I have walked with
friends. A friend of mine is
walking the 6km and then we
will have a coffee afterwards,” she
said.
Josiah Beach, 30, Anna
Beach, 30, and Ezra Beach,
16 – The trio will take on the
14km event this year. Husband
and wife, Josiah and Anna, have
completed the event a handful
of times previously, but it will be
Ezra’s first time doing the 14km.
“He’s just brought some new
RIVALRY: Ezra, Anna and Josiah Beach. (Right) – Geoff
Sutton and Angela Penn.
running shoes especially for it,”
said his older brother Josiah, who
has run up Rapaki Track a couple
of times to prepare. “I think I’ll
really get started on my training
next month.” Mrs Beach ran her
first City2Surf in 2009, when
training for a half marathon and
“never looked back.”
Angela Penn, 49,
and Geoff Sutton, 42 – The
brother and sister duo aren’t
letting the fact they are getting
older slow the down. The pair
are running the 6km event in the
City2Surf together. “I’m going to
be 50-years-old soon, I might as
well keep going while I am still
standing and don’t have many
injuries,” said Mrs Penn. Back
in October, the pair ran in the
Pegasus Fun Run 6km event and
hope to run the 10km event at the
Christchurch Marathon in June.
They are both driven by the hope
that one day they might have
grandchildren, who they would
like to be fit and healthy for. “It’s
more about getting out there and
enjoying it. I am really looking
forward to spending some time
with my brother, it’s good to hang
out,” Mrs Penn.
Roger Comber, 70 – Back
in his youth, Mr Comber took
part in two halfmarathons
in
Ashburton and
Timaru. Now
retired from his
job as an english
Roger
Comber
teacher, he said
he has decided
to get back into
running. He enjoys running
around the streets near where he
lives and often goes to Les Mills
gym to stay in shape. “I like the
City2Surf because it is an easy
distance and it’s a popular run to
take part in.”
James Ferguson, 32,
Harewood – Mr Ferguson
will take on the 14km event in
the City2Surf. It will be his first
time doing the event and he
admits he’s a “first-time runner,”
opting to keep fit
through rugby
and other sport.
The event will
help him prepare
for more running
later in the year
James
Ferguson
when he takes on
the Buller Gorge
half marathon
and the Saint Clair Vineyard
half marathon in Blenheim.
He is enjoying his training –
somewhat. “It’s a fair distance
the 14km, but I’ve got to get fit
somehow.” Before and after work
a couple of times a week, Mr
Ferguson has been challenging
himself to run distances
between 10km and 14km. He
will accompanied by a group of
friends who will also run in the
event next month.
Pauline De Wit, 66 – Mrs
De Wit isn’t keen to slow down
anytime soon. Previously, she
has run the 6km event in the
City2Surf but next month she
decided to “push the boat out”
and do the 14km
run. “I felt I could
have gone further
so I am keen to
try the 14km.
I have seen the
wonderful sense
Pauline
De Wit
of achievement
gained from an
event such as
this and wanted
to be part of it . . . I am getting
older and I want to achieve
something like this before age
takes me over.” Mrs De Wit has
been training with her friend Jill,
who she has done the event with
before. The pair enjoy after-work
walks around the Burwood
Wetlands. “The Wetlands takes
approximately 40 minutes, plus
walks at the weekend along the
Heathcote River. Also due to the
hot weather I have been enjoying
swimming at Corsair Bay,
Magazine Bay and at Sumner.”
TRAINING: Meg Longley
and Josh Stevenson will
attend a debate training
programme this month.
Developing top high
school debaters
• By Jess Gibson
TWO YEAR 13 debaters from
the north-west have been
selected for a South Island
development programme this
month.
Belfast’s Meg Longley and Josh
Stevenson of Burnside have been
selected to attend two weekend
training camps, along with another
Christchurch student and
three from Otago.
After the programme Meg,
who attends St Andrew’s College,
and Josh, who goes to Christ’s
College, will go head-to-head for
their schools in the regional debating
competition at Canterbury
University next month.
They were chosen by the
Canterbury Schools’ Debating
Council after a selection process
which monitored their abilities
throughout past competitions
Greater Christchurch National
MPs enjoyed getting out on
Monday and reconnecting with
the people who work so hard for
our region. We met with a range
of organisations from Canterbury
Police to Regenerate Christchurch
to ChristchurchNZ. As I often say, it’s
only when MPs are working on the
ground that we can see the impact
larger issues have on people’s
daily lives and it’s important to stay
connected.
Waitangi Day brought our
communities together in the spirit
that has made New Zealand the
envy of other countries. The traits
we value as New Zealanders, such
as our distinctive national identity
and respect for diversity, hold as true
today. I’ve begun my own Te Reo
Maori journey and enjoyed a greater
understanding this year of our Maori
tikanga. I encourage you on your
own Te Reo journey.
Constituents looking to purchase
their first home are losing confidence
they will be getting the keys soon
through Government’s KiwiBuild
and debates. Meg and Josh both
discovered a passion for debating
in year 9 and have competed
against each in several different
competitions.
They will work together for the
first time at the development programme,
going over a range of
articles about different political
issues and topics with coaches to
develop their skills.
“It’s important to be aware of
issues so that when we can vote
we know what’s going on,” said
Meg.
Josh said he enjoys debating
social issues that challenge him
and make him think. Both are
looking at their options for
university next year. Meg said she
wants to study law at either Otago
or Canterbury university, and
Josh has his sights set on Victoria
University.
SPORTS
initiative following the Housing
Minister’s admission they will be
going back to the drawing board on
this one.
This comes after Government
spectacularly missed its first-year
target to have 1,000 homes built
by July. First we saw that number
downgraded to 300 – and now
interim targets have been scrapped
altogether. So far, only 47 homes
have been built – amid discouraging
reports of buyers pulling out and
the homes being sold on the open
market instead of going back in the
ballot. National has always said
the way to build more houses is to
release more land and speed up the
consent process, and we proved
this after the earthquakes. Added to
this was our KiwiSaver HomeStart
scheme, which allowed people to
withdraw from their Kiwisaver funds
and gifted them an up to $10,000
grant towards their deposit. The
results? Between April 2016 and
March 2017, 315 HomeStart grants
were approved just in Waimakariri
electorate. The figures speak for
themselves.
ROWING, HOCKEY and
cycling have featured in the
achievements of talented Rangi
Ruru sportswomen.
First XI hockey players
Brittany Wang and Anneka
Calder were invited to play
for an invitational team against
the Great Britain women’s
team.
Brittany scored a goal
in the penalty shoot-out
at the end of the game
However, Anneka wasn’t able
to play due to rowing
commitments.
Rangi Ruru director of sport
Mandy Anderson said it was
a real honour for both girls to be
asked to play.
“It was an extremely exciting
opportunity to play against the
current Olympic champions,”
she said.
Meanwhile cyclist Charlotte
Spurway picked up the
Canterbury track cycling record
for the under-17 2km individual
pursuit.
On the water at the South
Island rowing club champs at
Lake Ruataniwha, Rangi Ruru
had an impressive medal haul
Mr Drury said he has
Gold Real Estate Group Ltd.
Let’s enjoy 2019!
and be a little more
green and mindful
Happy 2019. I’ve learnt that most people fit into
two camps when it comes to acknowledging a
New Year and the concept of setting New Years
resolutions. They either embrace them and jump
in with the zeal of someone slightly demented(
I’m probably in that camp) or they sideline the
opportunity, comfortable in the knowledge that the
year will be what it will be and that no amount of
forced change, good intent or actions can be carried
out for 12 whole months on a wish alone.
In fact an American survey conducted in 2018
found that up to 32% of people don’t set any
form of resolution at all seeing little value in
the process and no likelihood of an outcome.
I’ve never been able to see things through
the lens of relax, breathe then wait and see
but I’m aware that for some individuals that
is a positive choice, however in business this
could see you falter. Things change, markets
move either up or down, client expectations
grow, technology progresses forward and
expectations get bigger year on year.
A new year gives you the chance to really take
stock, to review where you’ve been, I always
do this with someone I trust implicitly, and
then work out where you want to go.
You can consider the challenges, the game
changes, the small wins and the larger
victories. They will all be there and each of
“Carry out a random
act of kindness, with no
expectation of reward, safe
in the knowledge that one
day someone might
do the same for you”
PRINCESS DIANA
these will provide great insights as to what
comes next. That’s where the resolutions come in
or they do for me. Statistically the most common
resolutions involve : weight loss ( been there)
and let’s face it who hasn’t, eat healthier (another
tick)exercise, read more, make more, save more
it’s always something more. Bill Gates once said “
most people overestimate what they can do in a
year and underestimate what they can do in ten”.
This year personally and in business I’m mindful
of the word and nature of less.
As a company it’s got us focused on some of the
finer aspects of less.
Less paper, less waste, less stress, more
community involvement, and more mindfulness.
I’m looking forward to it and I’m heartened by the
fact all of us are aware of the need to be kinder
to ourselves, our community and our planet. So
those are some of my resolutions but I couldn’t
go into 2019 with out some of the old favourites
(which I’ll keep to myself )but I will finally give
up on backing a trailer or worse the boat!! No
amount of intention will change the fact that
I’m terrible!
Whatever school you subscribe to all the best for
2019, it will be no surprise that the year will be
what ever You expect it to be.
Cathedral Grammar Pre-School
located within the heart of the city
Our play based learning
approach supports your child
as they begin their exciting
journey as a lifelong learner.
Play, laughter and learning are essential
ingredients for a successful Pre-School
education. The crucial early years need to
be nurtured, shaped and cherished as your
child takes their first steps in education.
Cathedral Grammar Pre-School proudly
teaches the children of tomorrow, today.
At Cathedral Grammar Pre-School your
whole family is welcomed into the wider
embrace of the Grammar community
including whole school fun and functions,
services and support as well as smooth
transition to the Junior School and links to
the Prep School.
In Cathedral Grammar’s purpose built
Pre-School, taught by qualified teachers,
your child will discover by curiosity,
investigation and exploration. Our low
child/teacher ratios, ensure your child’s
quality individual and group learning.
Research states that play may be the
single most important things that humans
do. “Our play based learning approach
supports your child as they begin their
exciting journey as a lifelong learner” says
Principal Scott Thelning.
Your child will develop essential
foundations in literacy and numeracy. He
or she will enjoy the benefits of specialised
facilities, subjects and staff including Art,
Physical Education, Yoga and Chapel.
When children feel good about
themselves and their abilities, they are able
to take flight and explore, discover, take
risks and play, laugh and learn effectively
and successfully. “Self-esteem is at the core
of this development process” Thelning
says.
Being an inner city Pre-School gives
you a wonderfully easy opportunity to
engage in your child’s learning if you are
working in the CBD. Every opportunity
is taken to utilise our central city location
to extend our ‘campus’ from the Botanic
Gardens to the Canterbury Museum,
The Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o
Waiwhetu to the Christchurch Transitional
Cathedral, from Tūranga (Christchurch
central library) to the emergency services.
Every day is an open day at Cathedral
Grammar Pre-School. Contact the
school office to arrange a personal tour
on 03 365 0385. Email Scott Thelning at
By now, landlords, property managers
and most tenants will be aware of the
changes to the Residential Tenancy Act
concerning home insulation, requiring all
rental properties to have adequate ceiling
and under floor insulation installed, where
practicable, by 30 June 2019.
However, many landlords and property
managers may not be aware they could be
liable for a $4,000 fine (per non-compliant
property), payable to the tenants, if their
investment properties do not meet the
standard in time. With an estimated 125,000
rental properties still requiring better
insulation, these owners and property
managers are being urged to take action now
to avoid the impending rush.
Local long-established insulation specialists
EnergySmart are a selected service
provider for the government’s EECA (Energy
Efficiency and Conservation Authority)
insulation programme, and currently offer
both landlords and homeowners great
savings to better insulate their properties.
The company offers free property
assessments with an insulation Compliance
Certificate for the property if the existing
insulation already complies. If insulation
is required, they provide a Compliance
Report and quote to complete the work.
Extended home energy assessments are
also available, covering heat pumps and LED
lights if required.
EnergySmart are one of the largest
manufacturers and installers of insulation
products in New Zealand and supply a
range of home solutions including their
own insulation brands Terra Lana wool and
PolyKing polyester, as well as supplying Pink
Batts fibreglass insulation. All carry a 50
year warranty.
Their installers are fully trained, clean
and tidy, and their work is audited both
internally as well as by the government, so
you are assured of the highest standard of
workmanship.
EnergySmart has easy payment options
including no deposit and 36 months
interest free, meaning you can insulate your
property from only $12 per week. Landlords
can insulate now, take advantage of current
discounts, and beat the rush.
While insulation in rental properties is now
a legal requirement for landlords, they will
also have the satisfaction of knowing their
tenants are living in a warmer healthier, more
energy-efficient home, and consequently
are more likely to stay.
