shelved
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A LIQUOR company has pulled
its plan to open an off-licence
store in Halswell’s Ensign St.
Bottle-O Halswell Ltd director
and shareholder Wendy Gibbons
told Southern View it has
cancelled its contract to purchase
a shop in The Oaks Village
Halswell complex.
The company
was granted an
application to
open an off-licence
liquor store at
29 Ensign St in
December.
However, the
Halswell Residents’
Association
appealed the decision to the
John
Bennett
Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing
Authority last month.
The application made by
Mrs Gibbons and her husband,
Richard, received 37 objections
along with five petitions
containing 32 signatures in
opposition to the store.
City council head of regulatory
compliance Tracey Weston said
the alcohol licensing team has
had no formal communication
that the application has been
withdrawn. •Turn to page 4
FREEDOM CAMPERS seem to be better
behaved cleanliness wise at the moment –
if the number of complaints being received
about them is a yardstick.
On page 5 today we revisit the annual
saga of freedom campers parking up along
Marine Pde.
The city council has received fewer complaints from the
public this summer than they did during 2017-2018.
But Coastal-Burwood Community Board chairwoman Kim
Money says they are still making a mess and she has put her
concerns to the city council.
One of her big concerns is the age old problem of, not to put
a too finer point on it, freedom campers taking a dump in the
sandhills.
And that’s why Joe Public will always give freedom campers
the bum’s rush.
Community groups in online spat
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A SPAT HAS broken out
between two Facebook
community pages in Halswell.
Resident Greig Russell has hit
out at the administrators of the
Halswell Community Group
page for being “ousted” from
the group of
nearly 11,000
members for
speaking his
mind.
He was
removed from
the page when
he posted a
Chrys Horn
mobile phone
number online.
Mr Russell since set up a new
page called Halswell Community
Page Uncensored with a
catchphrase of #LETSMAKE-
HALSWELLGREATAGAIN
“They ousted me out of the
community. Short of pitchforks
and tiki torches that is what they
have done,” he said.
Mr Russell was returning
home from a fishing trip in Greta
Valley when he came across a
group of men stranded due to
having a flat tyre. He lent the
men his spare wheel to enable
them to get home and got one of
their mobile numbers. Mr Russell
said the men had promised
to return the spare wheel the
next day, but nothing eventuated
and they would not return
his phone calls and blocked his
number. To pressure the man, he
asked members of the Halswell
Community Group to phone the
number and ask for the wheel’s
return. It was returned after
about a week.
But Halswell Community Project
chairwoman and one of the
administrators Chrys Horn said
it was harassment and would not
be tolerated.
“The trouble is people put up
stuff and they make allegations.
We have had quite a few times
that has happened and the poor
person on the receiving end has
no idea what was going on”.
But Mr Russell responded
saying it “absolutely” was not
harassment. He said he did
ARGUMENT:
Halswell
resident
Greig
Russell
said he
was ousted
out of the
Halswell
Community
Group
Facebook
page.
something about his wheel being
stolen and he got a result.
“Someone was trying to rip
me off. You put yourself in my
situation. You have got a phone
number that is all you have got.
What are you meant to do if they
block you?”
He said there is no consistency
in the Halswell Community
Group rules and if posts up not
up to their dictation they will
shut it down.
But Dr Horn said it is the
Halswell Community Project’s
page and it has clear rules people
need to follow.
“If people step outside those
and they don’t take no or an
answer then we block them and
that is just the way the world
works.
“Dr Horn said it is a large
group to monitor and because
the administrators have a lot
going on in their lives, they do
not always catch posts breaking
their rules right away. The group
has a wide range of policies
including group members being
unable to advertise businesses,
abuse or make racial comments,
complain about organisations
or make posts containing sexual
references or innuendo. On the
Halswell Community Page Uncensored
Mr Russell said as long
as people “keep it civil” they will
not get shut down.
Dr Horn said the group doesn’t
bare many grudges and she
would like to reinstate Mr Russell
when things settle down and
if the other administrators agree.
But she said several of the
administrators on the Halswell
Community Group have been
blocked from the Halswell
Community Page Uncensored.
Antarctica
Bottle store plan shelved
on a kayak
•From page 1
They will travel to Antarctica, via
South America on a One Oceans
Expeditions vessel. Once there, they
will have the opportunity to explore
the region in kayaks with help from
guides and Dawson.
“Going to Antarctica is incredible
but being able to kayak there will
be even more amazing . . . it means
we’ll be able to get up close to the
landscape and wildlife,” said Miss
Archibald.
As she counts down to the trip,
her focus is on training and ensuring
she has the right gear.
“I’ve been enjoying kayaking
around Banks Peninsula over the
summer. However, the warm temperatures
have been very different
to the polar conditions in Antarctica,
and one of the expedition’s
biggest challenges will be managing
the extreme cold while kayaking –
ideally I’ll get my layering techniques
right.”
As a self-described storyteller,
Miss Archibald was drawn to the
nature of the expedition, which
combines the chance to experience
new landscapes and wildlife.
On her return, Miss Archibald
will share her story with the Pasifika
community, schools, tertiary
institutions and community organisations.
•From page 1
“The application remains
under appeal unless formally
withdrawn by the applicant,”
she said.
The Oaks Village Halswell
developer Roger Bridge would
not comment on whether the
contract to purchase the bottle
store has been cancelled.
Residents’ association
chairman John Bennett
described the news as “a bolt of
lightning.”
He said it was getting
organised for the appeal but the
hearing wasn’t until late May.
“The community was
definitely not in favour of the
bottle store. If that is the case
they will be very happy,” Mr
Bennett said.
Mrs Gibbons said if the
application had proceeded
she would have appealed the
opening hours of 9am-11pm
daily. Mrs Gibbons said it
was very satisfying to see the
application was granted, and
the initial licence and ruling
acknowledged they are good
operators. The decision granting
the application said Mr and Mrs
Gibbons had the experience to
safely sell alcohol.
“The information we received
HALT: Bottle-O has decided not to open a store at the The Oaks Village Halswell complex.
from a notable solicitor said
that the majority of problems
presented into evidence were
related to an on-licence and The
Fire rages, homes at risk
she said.
FEWER PEOPLE have
complained about freedom
campers along Marine Pde over
the summer – but Kim Money says
they are still causing problems.
The Coastal-Burwood Community
Board chairwoman
presented her concerns at a city
council meeting about freedom
campers leaving rubbish behind
and defecating in
the sand dunes.
A city council
spokesperson
said the council
has received 20
Kim Money
fewer complaints
about freedom
campers around
Thomson Park and North Beach
compared to last summer. The
spokesperson said 15 fines had
been handed out to freedom
campers parked along Marine
Pde this summer, but could not
say if this was more or less than
last summer.
However, Ms Money said there
continued to be a number of
freedom campers without selfcontained
vehicles parking in the
North Beach and Thomson Park
car parks.
It was not uncommon for these
campers to leave piles of rubbish
and human waste behind, Ms
Money said.
PROBLEMS: Freedom campers along Marine Pde are causing issues.
“They’ll put their rubbish out
beside their vans in the car parks
and then they’ll just take off.”
She said it was common for
freedom campers near Thomson
Park to go into the sandhills
and they use those as their toilet
if they’re not close enough to a
toilet . . . if you ever take a look
down there you’ll find toilet paper
around.”
Efforts to stop this behaviour
had been somewhat successful,
but more needed to be done by
the city council to address the
issue fully.
“We’ve had Government funding
for the new loo to be put in at
Thomson Park . . . they are using
it, but some of the ones who are
parking further down aren’t, said
Ms Money.”
She said not enough ‘no freedom
camping’ signage was up
in the most popular spots and
this was also contributing to the
problem.
“We’ve already asked staff to
put up a sign in the car park at
Thomson Park, but there are not
enough signs. We don’t have any
signs in the North Beach car park
and some of the parking bays opposite
Thomson Park also don’t
have signs.”
The city council spokesperson
said it had listened to Mrs
Money’s concerns and would be
installing more signage in both
car parks next month.
Ms Money said the problem
did not end here though.
She said the number of city
council staff employed to police
freedom campers in these areas
was too small.
“There’s only two for Banks
Peninsula and along our coast,
so they’re really stretched. As a
community board, we do need to
be getting the message across that
perhaps the compliance officers
over the summer period need to
be increased.”
The city council spokesperson
said it had 26 enforcement officers
with the authority to hand
out freedom camping fines, but
only four were rostered on across
Christchurch on a typical day.
Ms Money said too many
freedom campers were escaping
fines by printing out fake stickers
saying their vehicles were selfcontained.
“It’s the little vans that are the
issue. There’s no way a van like
that can hold a toilet.”
The city council spokesperson
said “the council doesn’t have
knowledge of this.”
Ms Money said New Brighton
and its surrounding areas loved
tourists, but the way some were
behaving was ruining the area for
everyone.
“We welcome these people to
our area and it’s great to have
the tourists in the place, but
we also have to look after our
residents and our spaces and
our environment, so to do that,
we just have to send a clear
message that they need to be
responsible and respectful to our
communities.”
Let Her Fly - A Father’s Journey and
the Fight for Equality
by Ziauddin yousafzai
The story of the father who inspired the phenomenon
Let Her Fly traces the inspirational journey of Malala Yousafzai’s
father, Ziauddin, from a boy in Shangla to a man who broke with
tradition and proves there are many faces of feminism. With humor
and sincerity, Yousafzai describes his life before the Talibanization
of Mingora, scenes of his sons Khusal and Atal fighting kites on the
roof, his progressive partnership with his wife Toor Pekai, and the
challenge of raising children in an unfamiliar country. After Malala
was shot by the Taliban, the Yousafzai family was completely
uprooted from their home in the Swat Valley and forced to start over
in the United Kingdom. Now, Ziauddin expresses the complex pain
and joy of his return, six years later, to the site of Malala’s attack.
Let Her Fly is an intimate family portrait by the father of one of the most remarkable leaders in the
world today. Ziauddin and Toor Pakai have set a singular example for parents who hope to empower
their children to make a difference. Let Her Fly will resonate with anyone who has ever cared for a
child, as Ziauddin Yousafzai shares what he’s learned from his children, and what he hopes to teach
the world.
The Great Wide Open
By douglas Kennedy
It’s 1980s New York. Heady, excessive times. Alice Burns - a
young book editor - is deep into a manuscript about the morass of
family life. The observations resonates, perhaps because she has
just watched her own family implode. As she reads she wonders:
When did the sadness start? And could it be that unhappiness is
a choice? Thus begins a great American epic which follows Alice
as she navigates high school bullying, first love and sexism at an
elite college, a spell in 1970’s Ireland, and a tragedy that sends her
stateside as the US embraces a cowboy actor named Reagan. But it
is also the tale of her endlessly complex parents and brothers; how
their destinies are written by the lies they tell themselves and others.
The Great Wide Open is an immensely ambitious and compulsive
saga; a novel which will speak volumes to anyone who has
marvelled at that pain that can only be caused by family itself.
Annelies – A novel By david r. Gillham
A powerful and deeply humane new novel that asks the question:
What if Anne Frank survived the Holocaust?
The year is 1945, and Anne Frank is sixteen years old. Having
survived the concentration camps, but lost her mother and sister, she
reunites with her father, Pim, in newly liberated Amsterdam. But it’s
not as easy to fit the pieces of their life back together. Anne is adrift,
haunted by the ghosts of the horrors they experienced, while Pim is
fixated on returning to normalcy. Her beloved diary has been lost,
and her dreams of becoming a writer seem distant and pointless
now.
As Anne struggles to overcome the brutality of memory and
build a new life for herself, she grapples with heartbreak, grief,
and ultimately the freedom of forgiveness. A story of trauma and
redemption, Annelies honors Anne Frank’s legacy as not only a
symbol of hope and perseverance, but also a complex young woman of great ambition and heart.
Anne Frank is a cultural icon whose diary painted a vivid picture of the Holocaust and made her an
image of humanity in one of history’s darkest moments. But she was also a person—a precocious
young girl with a rich inner life and tremendous skill as a writer. In this masterful new novel, David R.
Gillham explores with breathtaking empathy the woman—and the writer—she might have become.
SPEED LIMIT changes on roads
some say.
The Coastal-
approved plans to
reduce the speed
limit to 40km/h
on Travis Rd and
Evan Smith
Bower Ave and
50km/h Frosts
last Monday.
However, Avon-Otakaro
Network’s spokesman Evan
Smith and Avonside Girls’ High
School’s board of trustees chairwoman
Monica Davis said the
New Zealand Transport Agency
should turn its attention to the
two roundabouts between Anzac
Drive New Brighton Rd and
Travis Rd.
Mr Smith said these roundabouts
were very busy and the
70km/h speed limit through
them would make crossing the
road dangerous for students.
Both Mr Smith and Ms Davis
said they wanted the speed limit
reduced to 50km/h through the
roundabouts.
“Even high school kids on
accident waiting to happen, said
Smith.”
Ms Davis said potentially hundreds
of students a day would be
crossing the roundabouts every
day to get to school.
“We expect to have about 2500
people on site so if it’s 25 per cent
However, NZTA senior traffic
to be much more dangerous than
intersections.
Crashes at roundabouts tend
to be of much lower severity than
PUBLIC FEEDBACK is being
sought on the draft landscape
plan for Scott Park in Ferrymead.
The draft plan features native
trees, sealed parking areas,
an established picnic area and
improved access to the beach and
boat ramps.
It is open for public consultation
until March 11. Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board
member Darrell Latham said
$145,000 will be available for the
park.
“This will not be enough to
complete the entire project. However,
it will mean that a start can
be made on the most important
aspects of the plan,” he said.
“From my perspective, I would
really like to see the access from
the Ferrymead bridge to the
jetty and planting and green space
enhancements done.”
City council head of parks
Andrew Rutledge said the plan
would regenerate and enhance the
popular park by improving water
access.
“Scott Park already meets multiple
community needs, particularly
with regard to recreational
water activities, but we want to
ensure that the area is well-placed
to meet future use,” Mr Rutledge
said.
Boxing gym’s
future a lot
David Cox supported
people in a quiet way
more certain
• By Matt Slaughter
AN ARANUI boxing gym has
bought the lease for its building
for just $1 a year.
The city council has agreed
to sell the lease of the damaged
Wainoni Park Youth Activity
Centre (known
as The Bunker)
to A-Town Boxing
Gym, on the
condition that
A-Town funds its
repairs itself.
Jamie
Roberts
A-Town have
been renting the
space since 2005,
but it was badly
damaged by an arson attack in
2014.
A-Town boxing gym’s manager
Jamie Roberts said over
$100,000 of damage still had to
be repaired, but the city council
had previously said it could not
justify paying for these repairs.
Mr Roberts said the handing
over of the lease was the best
option for all involved because
A-Town could finally get on with
seeking out funding options for
the repairs after years of not having
any power to do this.
“It gives us stability, we’ve
been in the community almost
20 years and now we’ll be there
for another three 11-year leases.
We’re pretty confident that
we’re not planning on going
anywhere.”
He said A-town was currently
in talks with a number of agencies
including the Rata Foundation
about getting funding for
the repairs.
“If we were to do sausage
sizzles we’d never get there, so
we’re going to look into funding
applications and different agencies.
It’s probably not something
one outfit is going to fund, it
might be a joint venture between
different people.”
Mr Roberts said the gym
had offered so much to its
surrounding community for
many years and having this
stability meant they could
continue to make a difference.
Port Hills MP
Ruth Dyson
pays tribute
to former city
Ferrymead
Community
Board member David Cox
WE ARE very fortunate in New
Zealand to have so many people
in our communities who are
“givers” – whether it’s people who
serve on school boards, coaches
and referees of our sports teams,
people who run our residents
and community associations,
or people who visit and support
those who are otherwise isolated
in their homes.
It’s part of our culture that
should be celebrated.
The celebration of that
community giving was the theme
at the funeral service for David
Cox, whose passing Southern
View acknowledged.
David had an “ABCs” of giving
– arts, business, community and
sports. He supported so much
within our area and the wider
David Cox
Canterbury community – driven
by a sense of returning to our
country, his adopted home –
because he felt so fortunate to be
able to make this his home.
This drive made me reflect on
how much we take for granted if
we were born here and how much
we should actually value what we
have as New Zealanders.
We have access to so many
opportunities here that many
from other countries dream
about – we should make the most
of them.
I want to add my reflections
on the life that David Cox lived
and celebrate the fact he had
this drive of returning his good
fortune. So many organisations
and individuals benefitted from
his generosity of time and spirit.
He supported so many people in
a quiet way, connecting people
and groups, and always with a
manner of impeccable respect
and politeness.
At his funeral, our mayor
reflected on the demise of these
manners with the advent of
social media, where hurtful
and unnecessary comments are
accepted.
But I am not as despairing as
her words, as I see the continued
community activity and others
who have followed in the example
set by David Cox. We are all
better off when we give our time
and skills to our community.
May his family be comforted
in their loss and may he rest in
peace.
End of an era for Avonside old girl
• By Matt Slaughter
PATRICIA TURNER made
some of the best memories of her
life during her time at Avonside
Girls’ High School.
But now the 77-year-old
Linwood resident is getting ready
to say goodbye to her former
school when it shifts from its
Avonside Drive site to a new
shared campus with Shirley
Boys’ High School at QE II Park
next term.
It has been 100 years since
Avonside Girls’ first opened.
Mrs Turner is the secretary
of the old girls’ association and
attended the school from 1955-
1958.
Mrs Turner’s sister Ruth
Aitken (then Turner) also
attended Avonside Girls’, starting
two years later.
Their mother Hilda Batson
was in the first class of students
who started at the school when it
opened in 1919.
Mrs Turner remembered
cycling to school every day from
her house in St Martins
and the “very tall trees that
turned beautiful colours in the
autumn.”
She also made friends that
have lasted a lifetime.
“It seemed to be a happy time
for all of us at that stage . . . A lot
of the past pupils of Avonside,
we meet for lunch every three
months and we’ve kept in touch
and we’re very loyal to the
school.”
She said she had a great
education, a love for English
and history and a strict but fair
headmistress.
Mrs Turner went on to have a
successful career as a shorthand
typing teacher and said her time
at Avonside Girls’ set her up
“extremely well for the market
that existed then.”
When the school was badly
damaged in the February 22,
2011, earthquake, Mrs Turner
said: “It really was heartbreaking
because the writing was more
or less on the wall that they
wouldn’t rebuild on the site.”
When the gates of Avonside’s
old site close for the last time,
it would signal the end of a
significant chapter in the lives of
its former students, she said.
“In normal circumstances, I
suppose the school could have
continued for another hundred
years, so it does mark the end
of an era and it means that
everything that we remembered
about school will be gone,” Mrs
Turner said.
“They were some of the
happiest days of my life and I feel
it’s now like the closing of a book
on that period.”
An event will be held at the
Avonside Girls’ old site on
Saturday from 1.30pm until 5pm
for past and present students
to reconnect, say farewell and
celebrate the school’s 100 year
anniversary.
Mrs Turner said the event
would have a post-World War
1 theme to recognise the huge
impact that the war had on its
first students.
She said her mother used
to say Avonside Girls’ was an
escape for many of the
school’s first students who
had fathers and brothers who
returned home from the war
traumatised.
“My mother always thought it
must have been a bit of a refuge
for these girls, where they could
just let themselves be teenagers
and they didn’t have to worry
about making a sudden noise or
waking up and hearing their big
brothers screaming,” Mrs Turner
said.
The farewell would include
a performance from a band
playing wartime songs and they
would be serving Anzac biscuits
Mrs Turner said hundreds of
former students of all ages would
attend the event, including its
oldest former student, 101-yearold
Beryl Newman.
Current students of Avonside
Girls’ High School will have
their last day at the old site in
mid-April before moving to the
new QE II campus at the start of
term 2.

Both these items are proving very popular
for lunch, the business owners say.
The souvlakis are available in three
portion sizes – small, large or triple, with
a choice of chicken, lamb, beef, kofta or
falafel and served with coleslaw, lettuce,
tzatziki, hummus and your choice of chili
or barbeque sauce.
All ingredients used at
Souvlaki King are sourced
locally to ensure freshness and
quality, including the meats,
which are supplied by the local
butchery.
The falafel is freshly prepared
every day to their own secret recipe,
and is another very popular item,
even for non-vegetarian customers,
and all the salads and sauces are
prepared on the premises every day.
For a sweet taste, they offer the traditional
baklava, and cake slices,
while beverages
include a selection
of coffees, teas, hot
chocolate, milk shakes
and thick shakes.
Souvlaki King has just
launched its website, www.
souvlakiking.nz, so you can
now order online and your
food will be ready to pick up
and pay for when you arrive.
You can also order by phone,
(03) 322-4888. Pre-ordering is
YOUR GUIDE
TO THE 2019
Saturday 2 March • Lincoln Domain
How to make the best of this fantastic day out
Can’t wait to see you at this year’s Selwyn Sounds!
LINCOLN
HIGH SCHOOL
Once again Lincoln Domain will be the perfect venue for
fun in the sun, awesome food and drink, and a stellar
cast of Kiwi music legends. As the sun goes down,
an unforgettable day will culminate with an awesome
performance from the one and only Little River Band!
Getting in
We want to make sure everyone
has a great time on the day, and
that there’s nothing stopping you
getting into the venue. So there
are some important dos and don’ts
that need to be followed.
To make sure there are no
surprises when you arrive,
take a few minutes to read our
Conditions of Entry.
We recommend you aim to get to
the venue well before the show
starts to get yourself a good spot.
Bus transport
There will be five pick up locations
around Christchurch and the
surrounding suburbs for those who
have pre-purchased bus tickets.
Just remember you need to
check in half an hour before
the bus departs.
Sorry but, due to high demand,
almost all the prepaid bus tickets
have been sold. BUT there is
an excellent regular Metro bus
service to Lincoln on the day
which runs at regular intervals
from Parklands through the city
centre and on to Lincoln.
Getting to
Lincoln Domain
& where to park
Lincoln Domain is located at
15 Meijer Drive Halswell, Lincoln.
There will be parking at Lincoln
High School on Boundary
Road, which is just a short walk
from the venue via a walkway.
You can download a printable pdf
of a map showing the location of
the venue & park from our website:
www.selwynsounds.co.nz
Seating
Zones
We want everyone to have a great
experience and be able to see our
fantastic line up from their seats.
So we have created three distinct
zones at the venue – there will be
no seating of any kind allowed at
the front (but feel free to bring a
picnic blanket), the next section
will be low chairs only, and you
are welcome to bring full height
deckchairs for the deckchair zone.
Thank you for your cooperation
with this.
Cosmetic dentistry with a
personal approach
A smile that has been improved and enhanced with
cosmetic dentistry treatment can have a significant
and positive effect on a person’s self-confidence in any
situation – whether social or business.
That’s where Smile Concepts in Colombo Street,
Sydenham comes into the picture. Offering a personal
approach to dentistry, the experienced team at Smile
Concepts provides a full range of cosmetic dental
treatments, including colour restoration, veneers, bridges,
crowns, dental implants and teeth whitening.
For teeth whitening they use the sought-after Zoom
whitening system, currently one of the most effective and
safest methods available on the market. Opalescence is
another in-office whitening system, and Smile Concepts
offers this very popular take-home whitening system to
accommodate patients’ busy lifestyles and budget.
For anyone seeking cosmetic treatment they offer
advice on the best and most reasonably priced options,
but ultimately it is the patient’s decision as to what
treatment is given.
In addition to cosmetic dentistry, Smile Concepts
provides full and partial dentures as well as the full
range of general dentistry treatment at reasonable prices,
including root canals and wisdom teeth extraction.
They also provide dental care services for children and
adolescents with special needs.
For nervous patients, they provide conscious sedation
(either oral sedation or ‘laughing gas’), making the
process a lot less stressful, and with their emphasis on
preventative dentistry they recommend regular checkups
to eliminate major problems occurring. Emergency
appointments are available at short notice.
Smile Concepts’ dental hygienist helps to keep gums
healthy, and by following her advice on healthy oral habits
you will keep your teeth and gums in good condition
between visits. New patients are welcome.
Smile Concepts is proud to work with the local
community, supporting initiatives such as Child Safety
Awareness Programmes, the Special Children’s Christmas
Party and is a regular donor to the University of
Canterbury Foundation.
To find out about the full range of services they offer,
visit their website at www.smileconcepts.co.nz or call
them on (03) 332 6399 to make an appointment.
They are located at 104 Colombo Street, Sydenham,
with ample parking available and a bus stop close by.
REAL ESTATE
An unparalleled lifestyle in magical Moncks Bay
242 Main Road, Redcliffs - “As-Is, Where-Is”
Auction: Thursday, 14 March 2019 Unless Sold Prior
4 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 3 living rooms | 1 office/study | 2 car-garage | 2 off-street parks | Listing Number SM0166
Treasured by two generations and offering
a truly once in a lifetime opportunity, this
tantalizing home upon a 2853m2 section
enjoys an overwhelming tranquil setting and
is presented to the market on an uninsured
“as-is, where-is” basis.
Situated in the tightly held locale of magical
Moncks Bay, this property makes a memorable
first impression and was constructed in the
1960s but has naturally received extensive
modern enhancements including a Bruce
Banbury architectural renovation in 2004.
Resort-style serenity is provided by the
colourful Clivias as well as the established
greenery and palms trees that border the
swimming and spa pool, with the outstanding
views and majestic cliff face backdrop only
escalating the property’s visual appeal.
Spacious living areas are complemented
by the sizeable Kwila deck, water feature
and idyllic alfresco surroundings which
have previously hosted a wedding and could
continue to be the scene of many memorable
occasions.
Skylights, the superb use of timber, a
contemporary colour scheme and the
magnificent stone fireplaces create an
incredibly inviting ambience indoors where
you’ll find four double bedrooms, two
bathrooms and a relaxing sunroom area that
comes complete with a spa bath.
With an expansive lawn area and the
picturesque garden at the rear of the property
both epitomise peace and privacy and offer
access up to the top of the section where
you can sit and admire the ocean vistas over
Moncks Bay incorporating from Shag Rock
and right along the Pegasus Bay coastline.
This property can potentially be subdivided
which furthers your options and adds
another element of interest for buyers.
Ensconced in a private lane that sits across
from the waterfront, this property is also
positioned to enjoy the area’s celebrated
microclimate and is located within easy reach
of the beaches, boating facilities, Barnett
Park and the amenities in both Redcliffs and
Sumner.
With floors needing repiling and being sold
uninsured, deemed uneconomical to repair,
this unique “as-is, where-is” opportunity is a
real game changer with the feel good factor
and is guaranteed to attract attention. Your
earliest viewing is advised.
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stand down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
plans are a l about lo bying the
council.”
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffered damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
