Kyle Park
vote
looms
today
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
COMMUNITY board members
will vote in favour of reclassifying
part of Kyle Park which will help
pave the way for the Hornby mega
facility to be built there.
Vicki Buck, Anne Galloway,
Jimmy Chen and Natalie Bryden
told Western News they are in
favour of the reclassification.
The Hornby-Halswell-Riccarton
Community Board will meet
today to vote on the issue.
If the reclassification of the park
is approved by the board it will
then go to the city council
But board chairman Mike Mora
and member Ross McFarlane
refused to show their hand before
today’s meeting.
Said Mr Mora: “If anybody is
saying before the matter is being
moved and seconded and debated
they are actually out of line.”
Mr McFarlane said it would
“prejudice process if I was to comment”
before the meeting.
Board deputy chairwoman
Helen Broughton and members
Debbie Mora and Catherine
Chu did not respond to Western
ANOTHER STEP in the long winded
Hornby mega centre saga happens today.
The Hornby-Halswell-Riccarton Community
Board votes over whether to
reclassify Kyle Park. If that happens the
city council then makes the full decision on its reclassification,
which effectively would pave way for the mega centre to be built
there.
Like Denton Park, now no longer an option for the site, there
are those for and against Kyle Park.
Western News reporter Georgia O’Connor-Harding canvassed
the nine community board members to see how they would
vote today.
Four responded and two of those said they wouldn’t disclose
their views until today’s meeting. No word from the other three.
Halswell bottle store plan shelved
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A LIQUOR company has pulled
its plan to open an off-licence
store in Halswell’s Ensign St.
Bottle-O Halswell Ltd
director and shareholder Wendy
Gibbons told Western News it
has cancelled its contract to
purchase a shop in The Oaks
Village Halswell complex.
The company was granted
an application
to open an offlicence
liquor
store at 29 Ensign
St in December.
However,
the Halswell
Residents’
John
Bennett
Association
appealed the
decision to
the Alcohol Regulatory and
Licensing Authority last month.
The application made by
Mrs Gibbons and her husband,
Richard, received 37 objections
along with five petitions
containing 32 signatures in
opposition to the store.
City council head of regulatory
compliance Tracey Weston said
the alcohol licensing team has
had no formal communication
that the application has been
withdrawn. “The application
remains under appeal unless
formally withdrawn by the
applicant,” she said.
The Oaks Village Halswell
developer Roger Bridge would
not comment on whether the
contract to purchase the bottle
store has been cancelled.
Residents’ association
chairman John Bennett
described the news as “a bolt of
lightning.”
He said it was getting
organised for the appeal but the
hearing wasn’t until late May.
“The community was
definitely not in favour of the
bottle store. If that is the case
they will be very happy,” Mr
Bennett said.
Mrs Gibbons said if the
application had proceeded
she would have appealed the
opening hours of 9am-11pm
daily. Mrs Gibbons said it
was very satisfying to see the
application was granted, and
HALT:
Bottle-O
has
decided
not to
open at
the The
Oaks
Village
Halswell
complex.
the initial licence and ruling
acknowledged they are good
operators. The decision granting
the application said Mr and Mrs
Gibbons had the experience to
safely sell alcohol.
“The information we received
from a notable solicitor said
that the majority of problems
presented into evidence were
related to an on-licence and The
Quarry Bar & Bistro, not an offlicence,”
she said.
In Brief
Fire rages, homes at risk
TEMPLETON FIRES
KiwiRail’s investigation into a
series of vegetation fires around
Templeton earlier this month
shows they were likely caused by
a train. KiwiRail has apologised
for the impact of the fires and is
taking steps to reduce the risk.
This will include identifying and
preventing vegetation fires near
train tracks, limiting the power
of locomotives, lowering speeds
and dampening areas beside the
train tracks.
DRIVEWAY SAFETY
Non-for-profit organisation
Parent to Parent is launching an
initiative at Bunnings Warehouse
Riccarton on Sunday called
SafeSquares to keep children safe
in driveways. It aims to create
a safe spot for children to stand
while vehicles are operating
in the driveway. A workshop
will be held at Bunnings from
10am-2pm in which people can
decorate a free paving stone.
POOL PARTY
Jellie Park Recreation and Sport
Centre will hold its final pool
party of the season on Saturday.
The ‘autumn pool party’
will include a synchronised
swimming display, zorbs,
inflatables and a free sausage
sizzle. The event will be held
from noon to 3pm.
Students – get to know your neighbours
Riccarton
Neighbourhood
Support Group
chairman
Richard Lee
writes about the
opportunities
students
moving into the area have
to connect with their
neighbours
OVER THE LAST couple of
weeks, a number of properties in
Riccarton have been rented out.
The EcoShop on Blenheim
Rd has become busy again
over the weekends with young
people buying up second-hand
mattresses and used furniture.
The kitchen utensils and
household items needed to start
a flat are being snapped up from
the likes of The Warehouse and
Kmart.
The transient group of mainly
tertiary students has begun
OVER THE FENCE: As Canterbury University students move
into Riccarton, Richard Lee offers a few tips on how they can
get to know their neighbours.
moving into our rather diverse
community for the start of the
academic year.
As a community, we would
like to extend a warm welcome
to our new neighbours who have
decided to make Riccarton their
home away from home.
There are plenty of
opportunities for new
residents to connect with their
neighbours.
They are welcome to join us at
the Riccarton Neighbourhood
Support Group meetings.
The meetings are held at 6pm
every first Wednesday of the
month at the Riccarton Baptist
Church, 80 Rattray St.
Go along and listen to the
invited speakers talk on a
variety of topics of interest to
the community and make some
new friends. Take a plate to share
with the community.
Last year, the neighbourhood
support group became the
caretaker of a mini-birdhouse
cabinet structure which holds
donated books for everyone in
the community to borrow.
The structure was built and
installed as part of a course
project undertaken by a group of
Canterbury University students.
The neighbourhood also has a
community garden and
pantry which is always in
need of volunteers to help out.
Through the years, we have also
had students helping out at the
garden.
All residents are welcome to
participate in the community
activities being organised
throughout the year.
The monthly Riccarton
Community Newsletter lists the
various activities and happenings
in the neighbourhood.
Readers respond to an
article about a planned
upgrade of the Middleton,
Ilam and Riccarton Rds
intersection, the fourth
most dangerous in the city
Dave Young – It’s not
rocket science, they have only
to set up the intersection as two
T-intersections with their own
traffic light phases, not the stupid
phases they have there at present.
One phase for Middleton Rd.
Then a phase for Riccarton Rd
then a third phase for the other
street and do away with the lefthand
free turn.
Sarah Smith – It’s the one I
avoid – can’t avoid my local one,
Marshland/Briggs/Lake Terrace
Rds intersection, though. It’s a
pretty bad one that needs green
arrows on all sides.
Fiona Ward – Surely it would
be easier and more effective to
alter the light sequences so that
each direction has a “right-turn
arrow” phase. There are so
many tricky/busy intersections
in Christchurch that don’t have
them and need them. It makes
no sense.
Holly Traxler-Puddle
– This is a very confusing and
tough intersection because
the roads don’t come to a
pronounced four-corner
intersection. That yellow road
sign on the far left should
actually be painted on the road
too.
Mandy Paget – So it’s not
the intersection, it’s the drivers?
Dimity Church – It’s an easy
one, no right-hand turns all
done.
Arleen Campbell – Hate
this intersection, so dangerous.
Jane Hughey – Oh well, it’s
okay, they will just keep putting
in more traffic lights, where
they aren’t needed and more
accidents will keep happening at
dangerous intersections.
Heather Wilkins – This
intersection has been like this
since I can remember and I’m in
my 60s now. You were just a bit
more cautious when you
went through it. Give way or
stop signs were worse.
Mary Jean – Very poorly
designed intersection.
Glyn Owen – Sit a police
car there for a while, or even a
cardboard cut out one.
Barry Clarke – If they have
green right turning arrows that
would make it safer.
Vicki Bennie – About time.
Jacque Skinner – Seriously?
How can they say this is a
dangerous intersection when it
has lights? Just go when the light
DANGEROUS: A safety upgrade is being planned for the
Middleton, Ilam and Riccarton Rds intersection.
is green and you have a space –
not rocket science. Try driving
through or across the Breens/
Harewood/Gardiners Rds
intersection at busy times of the
day with no lights where there
are constant fender-benders
and nasty accidents, plus kids
getting clipped by cars. That’s a
dangerous intersection.
Alison Westrupp – A
roundabout?
Pam Dench – Just change
the light phases. Simple fix,
not millions of dollars on an
upgrade.
Carlos Capinpin – Really
bad, I’m avoiding that
Middlleton-Ilam way, so
confusing.
Kathryn Macgregor
– Needs a roundabout by looks.
Mel Sherwood – This is the
worst intersection ever, I live right
by it and we were saying yesterday
something needs to be done.
Community groups in online spat
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A SPAT HAS broken out
between two Facebook
community pages in Halswell.
Resident Greig Russell has hit
out at the administrators of the
Halswell Community Group
page for being “ousted” from
the group of
nearly 11,000
members for
speaking his
mind.
He was
removed from
the page when
he posted a
Chrys Horn
mobile phone
number online.
Mr Russell since set up a new
page called Halswell Community
Page Uncensored with a
catchphrase of #LETSMAKE-
HALSWELLGREATAGAIN
“They ousted me out of the
community. Short of pitchforks
and tiki torches that is what they
have done,” he said.
Mr Russell was returning
home from a fishing trip in Greta
Valley when he came across a
group of men stranded due to
having a flat tyre. He lent the
men his spare wheel to enable
them to get home and got one of
their mobile numbers. Mr Russell
said the men had promised
to return the spare wheel the
next day, but nothing eventuated
and they would not return
his phone calls and blocked his
number. To pressure the man, he
asked members of the Halswell
Community Group to phone the
number and ask for the wheel’s
return. It was returned after
about a week.
But Halswell Community Project
chairwoman and one of the
administrators Chrys Horn said
it was harassment and would not
be tolerated.
“The trouble is people put up
stuff and they make allegations.
We have had quite a few times
that has happened and the poor
person on the receiving end has
no idea what was going on”.
But Mr Russell responded
saying it “absolutely” was not
harassment. He said he did
ARGUMENT:
Halswell
resident
Greig
Russell
said he
was ousted
out of the
Halswell
Community
Group
Facebook
page.
something about his wheel being
stolen and he got a result.
“Someone was trying to rip
me off. You put yourself in my
situation. You have got a phone
number that is all you have got.
What are you meant to do if they
block you?”
He said there is no consistency
in the Halswell Community
Group rules and if posts up not
up to their dictation they will
shut it down.
But Dr Horn said it is the
Halswell Community Project’s
page and it has clear rules people
need to follow.
“If people step outside those
and they don’t take no or an
answer then we block them and
that is just the way the world
works.
Owner sees thief stealing tools from van
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A THIEF WAS seen attempting
to steal tools from a work van in
Halswell.
Electro-Tech Services owner
Stephen Walker was driving to his
Aidanfield home in another vehicle
when he spotted a man inside
his work van.
The man had broken into the
van through the side window.
Mr Walker pulled up outside
his property as the man began to
walk down the driveway towards
the street, holding two tool cases.
One tool kit contained electrical
hand tools while the other was
a drill and battery kit. The tool
kits were worth several thousand
dollars together, Mr Walker said.
Mr Walker then confronted the
thief.
“I pulled over and wound down
the window and said: ‘Hey mate,
best you put that back and we will
call it quits’,’’ he said.
The man then turned around
and placed the tool kits beside the
van.
The man then walked out of the
driveway past Mr Walker’s car.
As he walked past, Mr Walker
pulled out his camera and told
the thief to “smile for the camera”.
“He then put his hands over his
head and ran past me at a
million miles an hour,” Mr
Walker said.
Mr Walker then called the police
and began to follow the man
before losing him.
Mr Walker drove around a couple
of streets looking for the man
before police told him to return
to his home.
The incident took place on
February 16 at about 2pm.
A police spokeswoman said
inquiries were conducted at
the time but did not locate the
man.
Mr Walker said police responded
“really quickly” which
was good.
Inquiries are ongoing.
Riccarton Rd plants
given new home
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
PLANTS WHICH otherwise would have
been sent to the dump have been given a
new home in Riccarton.
Creeping rosemary, agapanthus, hebes
and coleonema were removed from
Riccarton Rd last week as part of major
road works which started this month.
Eighteen planters were taken
out to enable space for one
lane of traffic in each direction
on Riccarton Rd during the
construction period.
But instead of being left to die,
the plants which could be saved
were transplanted to garden
beds at the Rata St and Straven
Rd intersection last week.
Riccarton Bush-Kilmarnock
Residents’ Association member
Lyndon Telfer wrote to the city council
last month, asking if the plants could be
placed in other gardens.
Association chairman Tony Simons
said it was good to know the city council
is thinking about conserving plants.
“We don’t like seeing things dumped so
we are really pleased the city council did
that,” he said.
The roadworks involve upgrading
damaged underground pipes and
•From page 1
The board will also make a
recommendation on the city council
going out for public consultation to allow
the Kyle Park Management Plan 1993 to
be updated.
The key objective for changing the plan
is to enable a community facility to be
accommodated on the eastern end of Kyle
Park.
Currently the
management plan does
not allow for a community
facility.
Cr Buck said she is really
keen to “keep the pace
going” and get the Hornby
Mike Mora
Anne
Galloway
facility established.
“We have gone through
all the options – this is the
quickest, fastest one and
the one I think has the
most community support,”
she said.
If the partial reserve
reclassification and
management plan changes
do not go ahead there
would be further delays as
an investigation would be required to find
another suitable site, a city council report
said.
It may also result in higher construction
costs due to inflation and a lower scope to
be able to be delivered for the budget.
Said Cr Galloway: “It is time to let
the community know we want the best
for them and provide a facility that will
encourage education and learning as well
as physical activity.
Cr Buck said her only concern was she
may not be able to get to the meeting due
to another commitment.
Last year, when the reclassification
Tony Simons
rebuilding the road to accommodate bus
priority measures.
The area has faced issues in the past
with plants along Rimu and Titoki Sts
being squashed by vehicles parking for
the Christchurch Farmers’ Market on
Saturday mornings.
Mr Simons said while it is still an issue,
the city council has made improvements
by putting bark chips on the
gardens.
It has also been placing road
cones around the gardens on
Saturday mornings to prevent
cars parking on the flower beds.
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board deputy
chairwoman Helen Broughton
said she brought the issue of
cars parking on Rimu and
Titoki Sts to the city council in
June.
She suggested bollards be placed
around the gardens.
Mr Simons supported this idea and
said the road cones are “not particularly
attractive.”
But city council planning and delivery
transport manager Lynette Ellis said the
safety of road users and the costs need
to be considered before any solutions are
finalised.
Kyle Park vote looms
CHOSEN SITE: Strong support
has been given by members of
the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board to allow Kyle Park
to be reclassified for the construction
of the Hornby mega-facility.
of Denton Park was discussed, the
community board decided not to proceed
with using the park for the facility on the
recommendation of a city council panel.
The park was turned down as the site
for the facility after strong opposition
from residents.
Former Save Denton Park chairman
Mark Peters said he imagined the
reclassification should go fairly
unopposed.
“I am more than happy to see this
proceed as soon as to get it sorted,” he
said.
Exploring Antarctica by sea
INSPIRED: Georgina Archibald training for her Antarctic
kayaking expedition next month.
A CHRISTCHURCH woman is
about to head to Antarctica to
kayak with an Olympian – all in
the name of inspiring others to
get out and explore.
Ara Institute of Canterbury
learning adviser Georgina Archibald,
29, is one of five young
people selected to take part in
the Antarctic Heritage Trust’s
Inspiring Explorers Expedition.
“This will certainly be the
greatest outdoor adventure I’ve
ever undertaken, so I’m thrilled
to have been selected,” said Miss
Archibald.
Next month Miss Archibald
and the expedition team – including
Olympic slalom canoeist
Mike Dawson – will travel to the
Antarctic Peninsula via South
America on a One Oceans Expeditions
vessel.
Once in Antarctica, they will
have the opportunity to explore
the region in kayaks with help
from guides and Dawson.
“Going to Antarctica is incredible
but being able to kayak there
will be even more amazing . . .
it means we’ll be able to get up
close to the landscape and wildlife,”
said Miss Archibald.
As she counts down to
the trip, her focus is on
training and ensuring
she has the right gear.
“I’ve been enjoying
kayaking around Banks
Peninsula over the
summer. However, the
warm temperatures have
been very different to
the polar conditions in
Antarctica, and one of
the expedition’s biggest
challenges will be managing
the extreme cold while kayaking
– ideally I’ll get my layering
techniques right.”
As a self-described storyteller,
Miss Archibald was drawn to
the nature of the expedition,
which combines the chance to
Georgina
Archibald
experience new landscapes and
wildlife. On her return, Miss Archibald
will share her story with
the Pasifika community, schools,
tertiary institutions and community
organisations.
“My message will be
focused on what an
incredible world we
live in and to make
the most of being able
to get out there and
explore it. Adventures,
big or small, local or
further afield, are what
opens our eyes and
make us appreciate
life.”
Antarctic Heritage
Trust executive director Nigel
Watson will lead the expedition,
saying it will be an unforgettable
experience. “We have an
incredible team on board this
year. We can’t wait to share this
journey as Antarctica has the
power to change lives.”
Garden award haul
•From page 1
The trophy is the competition’s
premier award and it won the
Howman Cup for outstanding
flats and townhouse gardens in a
retirement village.
The village came first place in
the rest and retirement homes
category of the competition,
earning them the Peter Lawrence
Challenge Trophy.
Individual village residents also
received a second and third prize
in the Howman Cup category
and the association awarded all
residents located on the village’s
street frontage a gardening certificate.
“Lots and lots” of hours have
gone into the garden – which is
cared for by Miss Holmes and
part-time gardener Amanda
Riordan.
“We both have a passion for
our work and we put our heart
and soul in the garden,” Miss
The revolution
in heat pumps
is here now!
Holmes said. The garden, which
was first planted by the village’s
former gardener Linda Rollo in
2010 features a range of plants
including rhododendrons, camellias,
lavenders and roses.
Mrs Rollo, who retired in late
2016, said a lot of the garden
has changed since the original
planting and it is “just a beautiful
village” now.
She said the key is to never give
up and put in “lots of hard work.”
Tasty Middle Eastern takeaways
a popular choice in Halswell
Now firmly established as one of
Halswell’s most popular takeaway food
outlets, Souvlaki King offers an extensive
range of authentic Middle Eastern food
that’s fresh, healthy and delicious.
In the last few weeks they have introduced
two new items to the menu, offering even
more choice for customers. These are the $11
Snack Box, which comprises scrumptious
hot chips with lamb, beef, chicken, falafel
or mixed, topped with cheese and barbeque
sauce or your choice of chili sauce, and the
traditional Shawarma, which is a roll filled
with meat, vegetarian falafel or feta cheese,
and topped with barbeque or your choice
of chili sauce. This is also $11, or $14 with
hot chips.
Both these items are proving very popular
for lunch, the business owners say.
The souvlakis are available in three
portion sizes – small, large or triple, with
a choice of chicken, lamb, beef, kofta or
falafel and served with coleslaw, lettuce,
tzatziki, hummus and your choice of chili
or barbeque sauce.
All ingredients used at
Souvlaki King are sourced
locally to ensure freshness and
quality, including the meats,
which are supplied by the local
butchery.
The falafel is freshly prepared
every day to their own secret recipe,
and is another very popular item,
even for non-vegetarian customers,
and all the salads and sauces are
prepared on the premises every day.
For a sweet taste, they offer the traditional
baklava, and cake slices,
while beverages
include a selection
of coffees, teas, hot
chocolate, milk shakes
and thick shakes.
Souvlaki King has just
launched its website, www.
souvlakiking.nz, so you can
now order online and your
food will be ready to pick up
Bangladesh tour for teen
CALL-UP: Caius Faatili is one of four St Thomas’ students to
make an age group NZ residents squad.
Four St Thomas students
selected for league squads
FOUR ST Thomas of
Canterbury College students and
a Hornby High School student
have been selected in the New
Zealand resident rugby league
16s and 18s squads.
Nikau Waikato, Jaedon Wellington,
Felix Fa’atilii and Caius
Fa’atili from St Thomas’ and Jordan
Coleman from Hornby have
been selected for the squads after
attending a talent development
programme held in Cambridge.
Felix Fa’atilii, Waikato and
Wellington have made the 16s
squad while Caius Fa’atili and
Coleman are selected in the 18s.
The camp saw 80 of the
best 16s and 18s players in
the country put through their
paces both on and off the
field at the three-day camp,
with everything they learnt
culminating in two trial matches
on the final day. The talent on
display left selectors with some
difficult decisions to make as
players battled it out in hopes of
catching the coaches’ eyes.
The squads will assemble on
during the school holidays on 15
April 15 and July 8, with a game
in October to be announced in
the coming months.
School’s Angus Sidey will get
his first taste of cricket in the
subcontinent when he heads
to Bangladesh with the New
Zealand under-19 team in April.
The 16-year-old received a
phone call from NZ under-19
coach and former Canterbury
and Black Caps batsman Peter
Fulton last week.
“It was pretty incredible really
. . . I was part of an emerging
players’ camp earlier in the year
but I had no idea I’d get the call
up,” said Sidey.
The right-arm pace bowler
is just one of three Canterbury
players named in the squad
along with St Andrew’s College
students Jesse Frew and Rhys
Mariu
The tour to Bangladesh will
be the New Zealand’s first series
in the lead up to the World Cup,
which will be played in South
Africa in January.
“It would be a bit of a dream
to make the World Cup team.
There will certainly be a bit of
pressure under the spotlight in
Bangladesh, but I wont let it get
to me,” said Sidey.
“It will be a interesting challenge
bowling in spin-friendly
conditions.”
The Bangladesh tour will start
with a 50-over warm-up game,
followed by five 50-over contests.
EXPERIENCE: Angus Sidey will get his first taste of cricket in
the sub continent when he travels to Bangladesh with the NZ
under-19 team in April.
Bangladesh, who recently
hosted the England under-19s,
Paul Wiseman, the former
Canterbury and Black Caps
spinner who is the programme
leader for the under-19s,
said: “We see this as purely
a wonderful opportunity; a
subcontinental tour that the
players will really benefit from.
I think we’ll learn a lot about
players over there.”
FEBRUARY 2018
Teaching and learning during construction
The redevelopment works will be carried out in such a way as to enable school business to continue as normal. Buildings will
be refurbished in sequence, with students decanted into spare classrooms. There will be three stages to the works.
Oaklands School
Project Update
Oaklands School is embarking on an exciting journey to transform our campus to meet our
vision for teaching and learning, now and into the future. This newsletter aims to inform and
update our school community on the redevelopment project. The proposed design transforms
Oaklands School, creating a new school entrance, with central courtyard surrounded by
administration, library and hall. The school’s teaching spaces will also be transformed into
new innovative learning environments.
Our vision
It is our goal to support and
nurture our students for their
unique strengths and talents at
Oaklands School.
We aim to meet individual learning
needs.
This can be seen in everything we do
from our flexible learning using an
inquiry approach, the opportunities
children have to learn in a wide range
of learning opportunities, extension/
enrichment programmes and strong
remedial programmes for those needing
targeted support.
Our CARE Values is a strong part of our
school culture in promoting life long
learners.
Innovative learning
environments
The world we are preparing our children
for is always changing.
Education needs to keep pace with this constant
evolution. Innovative learning environments are
capable of adapting as educational practice
evolves.
Innovative learning environments encourage
collaboration and inquiry for both children
and teachers. They allow the teacher to teach
in a range of styles and groups to best meet
the strengths and needs of a diverse group of
children.
The Ministry of Education has been very
supportive in working with the school to design
buildings that will support the constantly evolving
way of teaching and learning at Oaklands School.
We are Life Long
Learners who Aspire to
Excellence
We believe that learning is effective and
successful when:
• Learners experience success
• Meaningful relationships are built and
maintained
• We are connected collaboratively
• We know the learner
• We are all learning to learn in
authentic and purposeful contexts
• We approach learning with a growth
mindset
We have worked really hard
preparing for our redevelopment and
will keep focused on teaching and
learning throughout the project. So
much work has taken place during
the planning stages to ensure our
learning environments with
complement our excellent teaching
practices.
“Our redevelopment will involve the
demolition of 11 school buildings,
refurbishment of six buildings,
including the hall, as well as the
construction of three new buildings”,
The school will remain operational
during the redevelopment which is
expected to be completed by August
2020.
Margaret Trotter, Principal
Central Courtyard
Health and safety during
construction
The new buildings will comply to 100% new building standards.
Safety of students, staff and the public has priority during
construction.
Health and safety plans will be put in place prior to any work
proceeding on site, and will be actively managed throughout the
construction period.
Construction zones will be in place during construction, with no
access available for students, staff, or the general public.
Getting in
We want to make sure everyone
has a great time on the day, and
that there’s nothing stopping you
getting into the venue. So there
are some important dos and don’ts
that need to be followed.
To make sure there are no
surprises when you arrive,
take a few minutes to read our
Conditions of Entry.
We recommend you aim to get to
the venue well before the show
starts to get yourself a good spot.
Bus transport
There will be five pick up locations
around Christchurch and the
surrounding suburbs for those who
have pre-purchased bus tickets.
Just remember you need to
check in half an hour before
the bus departs.
Sorry but, due to high demand,
almost all the prepaid bus tickets
have been sold. BUT there is
an excellent regular Metro bus
service to Lincoln on the day
which runs at regular intervals
from Parklands through the city
centre and on to Lincoln.
Getting to
Lincoln Domain
Lincoln Domain is located at
You can download a printable pdf
of a map showing the location of
the venue & park from our website:
Seating
Zones
We want everyone to have a great
experience and be able to see our
fantastic line up from their seats.
So we have created three distinct
zones at the venue – there will be
no seating of any kind allowed at
the front (but feel free to bring a
picnic blanket), the next section
will be low chairs only, and you
are welcome to bring full height
deckchairs for the deckchair zone.
Feneon chases US basketball dream
• By Gordon Findlater
PROMISING basketballer Kurt
Feneon is looking to take his
game to the next level now he
has finished his final year at
Christchurch Boys’ High School.
Feneon, 18, trains twice a
day, five times a week with
the Canterbury Rams as he
pursues a United States college
scholarship.
The forward/guard has
adjusted his game since finishing
high school. At 198cm, Feneon
was predominantly used at
centre due to being the tallest
player in his team. However,
he is now concentrating on his
game as a wing player.
“I could always dribble and do
what you need to as a guard, but
I never did because I played as a
big,” said Feneon.
Those skills were on show
this month when he travelled to
Melbourne with the Canterbury
Knights as part of a six-game
tour. Feneon shot 7/14 threepointers
for the team, which
contained a number of current
and former Canterbury Rams.
“I was always a good midrange
shooter, but I’ve really
been working on my three-point
shooting.”
He’s hopeful that form will
translate into a US college
scholarship.
Going to the US has been his
objective since he got serious
about basketball four years ago.
If it happens, he won’t be the first
DETERMINED: Kurt Feneon trains twice a day to improve his
three-point shooting and pursue a US college scholarship.
in his family to make the
trip.
His father Remi from France
and mother Jolene from South
Africa met at the University
of Mississippi – known as Ole
Miss – while there on tennis
scholarships.
“They’ve always been
encouraging me on it because of
the great experiences they had
over there,” said Feneon.
SPORTS
Just like his parents and
sister Jade, who all play premier
inter-club tennis, he also played
the sport from a young age.
However, at 13 Feneon made the
switch to basketball.
“I was okay at tennis but I
never really loved it,” he said.
“I’ve found that winning with
a team is so much better than by
yourself.”
Feneon is now training
regularly with the Canterbury
Rams ahead of their NBL season.
He will head to Dunedin with
the Knights to play the Otago
Nuggets and Southland Sharks
next month.
“I’m just trying to make
sure I’m in the best shape I can
be. I’m just waiting for that call,”
he said.
While his ultimate goal
is to get to the NBA, he will
also have other professional
playing options in the Northern
Hemisphere if he can continue to
develop.
“I’ve got a French passport
because of my dad, so Europe is
another place I could play.”
Feneon was part of the
Canterbury team which won the
national under-19 title last year,
and has also attended a number
of New Zealand age group
camps.
Trio selected
for national
netball squad
QUANTELLE Hira-Kapua, Julia
Wynands and Olivia Burnham
have been selected in the New
Zealand Secondary School
netball squad.
Hira-Kapua from Hillmorton
High School and Wynands and
Burnham both from Villa Maria
College are the only three played
from the Mainland region to
gain selection into the 22-strong
squad following a three-day
national development camp in
Cambridge.
A NZSS team will be selected
from the squad by the end of
April.
NZSS head coach and panel
member Charissa Barham said
selectors had assessed performances
at the national development
camp, the ANZ Premiership
pre-season tournament
in Ōtaki along with various
secondary school tournaments
last year.
“It has been a thorough
process and we have had the opportunity
to look at a number of
players,” she said.
“There are some athletes who
were involved with the NZSS
team last year and plenty of new
faces who are pushing hard for
selection this year.”
Burnham is one of six players
in the squad from last year’s
NZSS team which competed in
Australia.
Wellbeing & Beauty
The smile you deserve
Christchurch Denture Care may only
have been in the Garden City since
October last year, but the company behind
them has been providing the same great
service to denture wearers in the South
Island for almost 60 years.
Now the same terrific service that
has seen locals from as far afield as
Oamaru, Timaru and Twizel travel miles
to have dentures made and repaired is
available right here at 105 Wainui Street
in Riccarton. It is this expertise and
experience that means denture wearers
are in safe hands, and local girl Joanna is
thrilled to be sharing her skills as a clinical
dental technician with the people she grew
up alongside.
Joanna, along with owner Jenny Wang,
believes in going that extra mile for clients.
Both are graduates from the University
of Otago and fully qualified and highlyexperienced
dental technicians. They pride
themselves on terrific customer service.
However long it takes, they want their
clients to be happy with their decision and
with the final product. They will develop a
personalised treatment plan and provide
a free initial consultation, free polishing
for the lifetime of your dentures, and free
after-care service. For clients who live in
one of Christchurch’s rest homes, they will
come to you at no cost, and as part of their
community service, they run seminars to
educate nurses and caregivers on gum and
denture care.
They provide the full range of services
for denture wearers including making a
wide range of full and partial dentures
that are customised to fit comfortably in
the mouth and that look like a natural fit
with your existing smile. The dentures
can be conventional acrylic,
metal framed or flexible and
they will sit down with you to
discuss exactly what will work
best for you, your mouth and
your lifestyle. They will make
sure your dentures last as long
as possible, offering relines
and repairs. Their equipment
will soon be state-of-the-art
with 3D digital technology
on its way including a facial scanner and
a 3D printer. This will help cut down the
time spent waiting for dentures to be
manufactured and will provide a snugger
and more comfortable final fit.
On top of all that, they offer
mouthguards for sports people, snoreguards
for the partners of snorers, and
professional-quality teeth-whitening trays.
Call in and meet the friendly team
or telephone 03 341 2242 to book your
REAL ESTATE
An unparalleled lifestyle in magical Moncks Bay
242 Main Road, Redcliffs - “As-Is, Where-Is”
Auction: Thursday, 14 March 2019 Unless Sold Prior
4 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 3 living rooms | 1 office/study | 2 car-garage | 2 off-street parks | Listing Number SM0166
Treasured by two generations and offering
a truly once in a lifetime opportunity, this
tantalizing home upon a 2853m2 section
enjoys an overwhelming tranquil setting and
is presented to the market on an uninsured
“as-is, where-is” basis.
Situated in the tightly held locale of magical
Moncks Bay, this property makes a memorable
first impression and was constructed in the
1960s but has naturally received extensive
modern enhancements including a Bruce
Banbury architectural renovation in 2004.
Resort-style serenity is provided by the
colourful Clivias as well as the established
greenery and palms trees that border the
swimming and spa pool, with the outstanding
views and majestic cliff face backdrop only
escalating the property’s visual appeal.
Spacious living areas are complemented
by the sizeable Kwila deck, water feature
and idyllic alfresco surroundings which
have previously hosted a wedding and could
continue to be the scene of many memorable
occasions.
Skylights, the superb use of timber, a
contemporary colour scheme and the
magnificent stone fireplaces create an
incredibly inviting ambience indoors where
you’ll find four double bedrooms, two
bathrooms and a relaxing sunroom area that
comes complete with a spa bath.
With an expansive lawn area and the
picturesque garden at the rear of the property
both epitomise peace and privacy and offer
access up to the top of the section where
you can sit and admire the ocean vistas over
Moncks Bay incorporating from Shag Rock
and right along the Pegasus Bay coastline.
This property can potentially be subdivided
which furthers your options and adds
another element of interest for buyers.
Ensconced in a private lane that sits across
from the waterfront, this property is also
positioned to enjoy the area’s celebrated
microclimate and is located within easy reach
of the beaches, boating facilities, Barnett
Park and the amenities in both Redcliffs and
Sumner.
With floors needing repiling and being sold
uninsured, deemed uneconomical to repair,
this unique “as-is, where-is” opportunity is a
real game changer with the feel good factor
and is guaranteed to attract attention. Your
earliest viewing is advised.
WORKSAFE NEW Zealand
has b en a proached in a bid to
fina ly repair the potholes in New
Brighton’s Hawke St car park.
Coastal-Burw od Ward city
counci lor David East wants
WorkSafe to pre sure the car
park’s private owners into
repairing the potholes which are
a “trip and vehicle” hazard.
WorkSafe chief inspector
a se sment southern Da ren
Handforth said it may be able to
take action under the Health and
Safety at Work Act 2015, “as a
person conducting a busine s or
undertaking.”
Mr Handforth said WorkSafe
is aware of the concerns raised by
Cr East abou the car park.
“WorkSafe has completed
an a se sment visi to the site
and is engaging with the owner
to advise them that it is their
responsibility to manage their
risks a propriately.”
Different parts of the car park
are owned by various people
and the Coastal-Burw od
Community Board recently
wrote to them about its concerns
around health and safety.
Cr East said the bi gest i sue
in the past has b en ge ting in
touch with the landlords and
owners and ge ting them to
agr e to anything. “The board
a preciates that multi-ownership
of the parking space may present
a difficulty in co-ordinating
repair/resurfacing but felt obliged
to pa s these concerns onto you,”
said the le ter.
One reply has b en received so
far from an owner who is wi ling
to discu s the i sue. However, a l
the owners would have to agr e
to undertake work.
Cr East said there had b en
a “number of incidences” in
the car park of people injuring
themselves which had gone
unreported.
“I’ve always though that it
has b en quite amazing that we
haven’t had any serious a cidents
or senior citizens perhaps
tri ping in those potholes and
doing themselve some damage.”
He is confiden the new
a proach wi l bring results.
“I think the WorkSafe
involvement may prove to be the
lever that we are l oking for.”
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stand down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
plans are a l about lo bying the
council.”
Apartments’
sign-off
this week
• By Sarla Donovan
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffered damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
A WOOLSTON butcher proved
New World Fe ry Rd butcher
Jeremy Garth and his team, the
Pure South Sharp Blacks, recently
It was the firs time Mr Garth
how the team performed.
“We produced some top quality
products and came away
with a g od result so we’re very
The preparation for this year’s
World Butchers’ Cha lenge was
intense as the team members
met in Auckland every two
months for lengthy w ekend
practices.
Mr Garth, who has b en a
competition brought back his
pa sion for the job.
“Doing a l thi stuff and
m eting new people, s eing new
ideas, it just brings that flair
back for you,” he said.
Mr Garth hopes to own a
butcher shop of his own someday
but says for now he wi l focus
on ge ting mor experience
and on the 2020 cha lenge.
“In two years’ time, we’ l be
Elite Meats owner Corey
Mr Winder and his team, the
Pure South Sharp Blacks, which
includes W olston butcher
in the competition.
He said the cha lenge started
as a “transtasman test match”
The preparation for this
year’s World Butchers’ Challenge
was intense as the team
members met in Auckland
every two months for lengthy
said coming second against 1
other countries was a “fantastic”
result.
“To get second behind Ireland
was a huge achievement and to
be ahead of Australia is an
even bi ger thing for us,” he
said.
But Mr Winder admires the
Australian team.
“Those guys over there
[Australia] are on top of their
said.
“And it just showcases that
New Zealand has got some
