10 How to take care of your eyes by Kerry Taher, New Vision Opticians “You can eat with false teeth but you can’t see with false eyes” highlights just how important our eyes are. As a population, we are living longer than ever before so we need to keep ourselves in the best condition possible, including our eyes. Of course, some things we can’t do much about eg inherited genes, but we can make things better or worse depending on how we live our lives. By doing the things we all know we should be doing (healthy lifestyle, balanced diet, regular exercise), we will be delaying or preventing some of the serious eye conditions related to high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. Simple things such as wearing UV-protecting sunglasses will also reduce the damage done to the eyes such as cataracts, eyelid disease and macular degeneration. Protecting the eyes makes sense regarding DIY & gardening tasks, but should also be considered for sports. Cycling, to protect from loose stones or insects hitting the eyes. Squash, rugby, football etc to prevent direct impact (eg a squash ball is just small enough to fi t between the protective bones surrounding the eye and can cause particularly serious injuries). Helping the eyes when there is visual stress eg dyslexia – precision tinted overlays can make a huge difference to someone’s life. When glasses don’t help: options include prescription swimming goggles, contact lenses for gymnastics or golfi ng in the rain, or taking supplements to help those with dry macular degeneration. Having regular eye tests is therefore essential. Not just to discuss the best options, but also to test for any potentially sight-threatening diseases – a lot of them don’t affect your sight until it’s too late. As always, prevention is better than cure. The Advertizer Gryffe Valley Rotary Club - focusing on local people GRYFFE CAMERA CLUB PRIMARY SCHOOLS PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION John King had attended the presentations of Rotary prizes at each school. A display of the best prints was on show at our Club meeting on 6th February, introduced by Robert Chambers of the Gryffe Camera Club. Robert explained how the 162 entries from Houston, Bridge of Weir, St Fillan’s and Kilmacolm Primaries were each reviewed and a critique written to give back to the entrant. The best photographs were picked from each school to create a school panel of three. These panels were then ranked and in 2019 Houston Primary emerged as the overall winner with Caitlin Paterson fi rst, Beth McDonald second and Emma Shaw third. Each of the twelve fi nalists was given a prize, provided by Rotary which is keen to support the competition. Pictured here, Robert is holding up the winning panel. In thanking Robert, Andrew Macleman remarked on the quality of the photographs and complemented the Gryffe Camera Club on their work with the schools. YOUTH SERVICES Young Chef - The club competition took place at the end of 2018 at Gryffe High School Food, Health and Technology Department. Competitors from Gryffe High, St Benedict’s, and St Columba’s participated. The judges (Elizabeth Fairbairn, Joyce Beaton and Clair Kerr) assessed the competitors’ preparation, observed their practical skills and then sampled the products. The winner was Phoebe Singer of Gryffe High, the Runner-up was Luke Russell of St Benedict’s and a Highly Commended for under 12s was awarded to Emma Ventham of St Columba’s. The prizes were sponsored by Gibb Stuart Home Hardware. Phoebe Singer went forward to represent the Club in the District Final in South Lanarkshire College, East Kilbride on Wednesday 23rd January. Her preparations were assisted by Elizabeth Fairbairn and her “whites” were sponsored by The River Inn. Though unplaced in a closely fought contest Phoebe impressed with her cooking and with her interaction with the adults and other competitors … a credit to herself and those she represented. Euroscola - Shaun Sweeney of Gryffe High School travelled to Strasbourg on 27th January. He will report back to the club later in the Rotary year. Youth Speaks - the Club was represented in the District Intermediates fi nals on 3rd February by a team from St Columba’s - Laurie McDougall (Chairperson), Bronte Marritt (Speaker), Emma Ventham (Vote of Thanks) speaking on the subject “The Value of Art”. The team came in as very creditable runners-up. YOUNG CARERS OUTINGS Gryffe Valley Rotary was pleased to give 60 Young Carers evenings out at the Experience, Hillington where they enjoyed Electric Karting, Laser shooting and an American Buffet. The fi nal night, January 31st, coincided with Young Carers Awareness Day 2019. This year, Young Carers Awareness Day focused on the theme of mental health – linking in to the #CareForMeToo campaign. Dental implants are a safe, wellestablished treatment to fi t replacement teeth. Most implants are titanium posts that are used to replace the root of a tooth with a crown or bridge fi tted on top. Done well, they can be made to look and feel just like natural teeth. Why should I get a dental implant? A dental implant is a fi xed solution for one or more missing teeth, and can help restore both your smile and your quality of life. Implants safeguard your overall dental health. Replacing missing teeth is extremely important, as missing teeth cause bone loss which can age your face, and could potentially cause adjacent teeth to become loose too. I have my own teeth, can I still get implants? You can have any number of teeth replaced with implants - from a single tooth attaching a crown to multiple teeth using a bridge. Do I need a consultation? To ensure suitability a dentist will undertake an initial consultation to explain the process and discuss your options. An assessment will then be needed to ensure your gums are healthy and that there is enough healthy bone to place the implant. What’s involved and does it hurt? Placing an implant is a straightforward process which can be completed under local anaesthetic. The procedure involves attaching the implant to the jawbone and, whilst you will not feel any pain at the time, you may feel some discomfort in the days after the procedure. How long does it take? The implants will need three to six months to heal and integrate with your jaw bone to provide a solid support for the crown or bridge. Whilst some false teeth can be fi tted at the same time as the implant most procedures do take several months to complete. Your dental team will go through a schedule and all your options with you. How long do implants last? Much like natural teeth implants should last as long as you care for them and it is just as important to visit your dentist regularly for maintenance and checkups.
