Daniel Ryan, assistant superintendent for professional learning and human resources, shared that K-8 student enrollment is expected to drop 2.5 percent in the next school year, down from 1,621 to 1,580. The number of incoming kindergarteners, however, is projected to stay level with this year’s class at around 138 students. Considering these numbers, in addition to accounting for programming shifts next year such as a more inclusive special education program at Washburne and a high number of incoming kindergarteners with individualized education plans, Ryan expects that staffing needs will only reduce 1.4 percent, from 333.6 FTE to 329. However, with expected retirements and other adjustments, Ryan does not foresee the need to terminate any employees at this time. As the staffing plan will be revised over the next month with more updated enrollment figures and information, it will be confirmed at the March board meeting where members will vote to approve the plan. As the number of incoming kindergarteners with IEPs is atypically high this year — usually 2-3 students come from NSSEDsponsored preschools, but this year 11 will — board member Dawn Livingston asked if the North Suburban Special Education District is seeing this bump with all schools in their district. “We’re an anomaly compared to some others,”Superintendent Trisha Kocanda responded. Director of Student Services Beth Martin explained that NSSED has expanded outreach and more children now are able to receive services than ever before, so the number of children with IEPs is an effect of that outreach, as well as preschool teachers’ improved ability to identify needs, all in addition to more students than usual requiring services. Martin emphasized that this early identification is “good for the kids,” and Kocanda reminded that it is a better outcome for all when those students are invested in early. In other news from the evening, five action items were unanimously passed by the board, including the 2019-2020 academic year calendar; an auditors’ arrangement letter; and a bid approval for renovations taking place in the summer. In addition, the same kindergarten attendance boundaries as the last two years for Crow Island district children were approved, though this will be the last year that kindergarten will not be held at the school as re-districting is set to be finalized later this spring. Though the April 2 referendum was only minimally discussed at the meeting when Kocanda shared the dates of both past and upcoming informational outreach sessions and tours, one meeting attendee, Brie Root, urged attendees to vote “yes” during the public comment portion of the meeting. A moment from the meeting was also taken to remember Rachel Owen, who worked for nearly 20 years as a secretary at Skokie School. According to Kocanda, her recent death has been difficult for many, but there has also been much laughter coming from shared stories about Owen. “She will be deeply missed,” Kocanda said. Glencoe, IL Winnetka Park Board Winnetka, Northfield parks agreement OK’d for one year Todd Marver Freelance Reporter The partnership between the Winnetka and Northfield Park Districts will continue at least another year. The Winnetka Park Board approved a oneyear extension of its reciprocal agreement with the Northfield Park District at its Thursday, Feb. 28 meeting. The Northfield Park District requested the continuation of the agreement. Last year was the first time this agreement was in place and the park districts plan to continue to evaluate it annually. The agreement allows Winnetka Park District residents to purchase a fitness membership at resident rates to the Northfield Park District fitness center, while Northfield Park District residents are able to purchase a Winnetka Park District swimming beach season pass at resident rates. Through this agreement, nine Winnetka Park District households purchased a Northfield Fitness Center membership in 2018. Superintendent of Recreation John Shea said that park district staff believes offering additional fitness opportunities at a lower price point in Northfield compared to Winnetka based fitness studios is a benefit to its residents. “Out of the (Winnetka) families that have used the (Northfield Fitness Center) pass this year, they’ve used it over 282 times,” Shea said.
