In Memoriam
Nancy M. Singer
Nancy M. Singer (nee
Mueller) M.A., 72, of Wilmette,
formerly of Winnetka,
died Feb. 21 at her
home after a long battle
with cancer. Singer was
the loving wife of 31 years
to the late Mark E. Singer;
cherished mother of Abigail
M. Singer of Oregon and
Mark P. Singer of Virginia;
beloved sister to Joseph
Mueller of Springfield and
the late Mary Winget (nee
Mueller) of Minnesota;
grandmother, aunt, cousin,
friend and colleague. An
avid supporter of progressive
causes, Singer spent
her life working in education,
first teaching economics
at the University of
Kansas, and last working as
assistant to the dean of engineering
at the University
of Illinois at Chicago. A
Memorial Service was held
Saturday, March 9, at the
First Presbyterian Church
of Wilmette, 600 9th St. In
lieu of flowers, donations

William (Bill) Clark Stetson
New Trier graduate William
(Bill) Clark Stetson, Jr.
March 1, died. Stetson, 85,
died peacefully in the presence
of his wife Jane (nee
Collins). Married to Jane
63 years, Stetson is also survived
by his four children:
Brad (Judy), Todd (Kathy),
Lynn (Kathleen) and Jody
(Mike) Nolan. He was the
charismatic grandpa to Brett
(Katie), Drew (Jackie), Liz
(Sean), Danny (Laura), Julie
(Shawn), Clare, Griffin,
Patrick, Breghan, Keeley
and Morgan in addition
to a great grandpa to Will,
Ben, Charlie, Emma Jane,
Molly and two more on the
way. Stetson began his life
as a troublemaker until the

while holding his head up

Jackson became Stetson’s
mentor and coached him to
an Illinois state champion
in 1952 and a swimming
scholarship to Northwestern
University, where he also
earned his Master’s. Stetson
became a teacher and coach
at Bay City, Mochigan,
Handy High School where
he coached All-Americans
and a National High School
record-setting freestyle relay.
In 1962, Stetson and his
wife moved to Glenview,
where they became very visible
and active community
members. He was an original
teacher at Glenbrook
South High School and
went on to coach the swimming
teams for 26 years
earning national recognition
as the nation’s top scholastic
swimming contributor.

National Interscholastic
Swimming Coaches Association
Hall of Fame award
for his leadership and service
to national high school
swimming. His legacy contribution
will be his Learn-
To-Swim program where
he instructed high schoolers
how to teach toddlers and
grade schoolers to swim.
His creation and leadership
of this program is responsible
for tens of thousands
of lessons providing young
children with a critical life
skill. His daughter, Jody,
now leads the program in
its 57th year. In addition to
his impact to the sport of
swimming, Stetson was a
natural athlete winning the
Glenview Men’s Tennis
championship and enjoying
his late night matches
with friends or his sons. A
talented craftsman, Stetson
built furniture and remodeled
homes. An intrepid outdoorsman
from his youth
camps in Wyoming, he also
delighted in camping with
his family across the country.
More than anything, he
believed in providing young
people direction and then
letting them find their way.
Stetson’s 30-year presence
in Hilton Head Island was
marked by the friendly bald
man on his recumbent bicycle
with flags of family
colleges and Chicago sports
favorites as well as his ongoing
love of tennis with
friends at the South Beach
Racquet Club. Remembrance
visits are pending. In
lieu of flowers, memorials

Evenings
Consider beginning a
new spiritual practice of
mid-week worship during
Lent this year. At 7 p.m.
on five Thursdays (March
14, 21, 28 and April 4 and
11), the church will offer a
meditative worship service
in the style of Taizé, the
ecumenical monastic community
in France that has
become well known for its
peaceful worship services
of sung prayer.
The service of about 40
minutes features the singing
of meditative short
choruses, a scripture reading,
ten minutes of silence,
candle lighting, and the
sacrament of communion.
