New Trier holds off Loyola, heads to state finals again
Neil Milbert
Freelance Reporter
Last season it took the
New Trier girls hockey
team two overtimes to
defeat Loyola Academy
in the semifinals of the
Amateur Hockey Association
Illinois state playoffs
but this time it was a lot
easier.
“They took it to us in the
first 10 minutes and then
we took over the game,”
coach Lenny Munson said
after his Trevians moved
on to the championship
game in the United Center
at 4 p.m. on March 22 by
virtue of their compelling
4-2 conquest of the Ramblers
on March 7 at The
Edge in Bensenville.
“We have more scoring
this year. (During the
regular season) we were
the highest scoring girls’
hockey team in Illinois.
“Ella Huber didn’t play
for us last year, and this
year she’s the leading
point-getter in Illinois.
She’s only a sophomore
and she’s already committed
to the University of
Minnesota.”
Huber scored the Trevians’
fourth goal late in
the third period and assisted
when Serena Seiple
got their third goal to prop
goaltender Abby Wieczorek
on a 3-0 cushion
with 3 inutes, 21 seconds
remaining in the middle
period.
Kathryn McLaughlin
opened the scoring at
4:58 of the first period
when her uncontested
short-range attempt from
the right side found the
net after Loyola goalie
Kayla Johnson deflected
a shot-from the opposite
direction and Julia Laden
got the second goal on a
close-in shot with 6:02
elapsed in the second period.
“Our offense was amazing,”
McLaughlin said.
“We used each other well.
Everyone was working.
“It’s going to be awesome
going back to the
United Center with this
new team.”
The Ramblers got on
the scoreboard with 3:21
to play in the second period
when Jayna Park
forced a turnover, broke
away and propelled the
puck past the New Trier
goalie.
“I faked the goalie and
shot high,” Park said.
The Ramblers’ other
goal with 1:49 left in the
contest came from the stick
of Caroline Smith during a
scramble in front of the net.
In a game in which
the action was non-stop
Wieczorek was credited
with 18 saves, while
Johnson had 24.
“Our girls love to play
hockey,” Munson said.
“Fifteen of our 20 players
play (travel hockey) for
either the Young Americans
or the Chicago Mission.
That’s a lot of hockey.”
Loyola also has travel
hockey players on its roster
and some are teammates
of the Trevians with
the Mission and Young
Americans.
The girls who are with
the Mission practiced in
downtown Chicago from
5:10 to 6:20 p.m. before
leaving for Bensenville
and their 8:30 p.m. high
school State tournament
semifinal game.
The game concluded
the brilliant high school
career of Loyola’s All-
State senior forward Gabriella
Ciesla, and coach
Robert Messner praised
her contributions to the
Ramblers’ success the last
two seasons.
“She was a captain, a
leader on the ice, a leader
off the ice,” Messner said.
“In the last two years she
has played every position
for us, including goalie.
She brought a passion to
the game that the other
girls fed off.”
Although he will lose
Ciesla to graduation,
Messner will have a
strong nucleus returning
for the 2019-20 season
at Loyola. Juniors Park,
Elle Joubert, Jenna Rekoske
and Kathleen Gorman
played significant roles
this season as did freshmen
Karly Kolssak and
Deanna Buenzow.
While Messner is looking
forward to next season
Munson’s focus is
on the next game: New
Trier’s opponent in the
state title game will be
Fenwick, a 3-1 winner
over Latin School in the
first semifinal game at
