It matters to many Wilmette residents, families and their friends. That was evident at Wilmette’s 13th annual community environmental fair Sunday, March 10, at Michigan Shores Club that once again attracted hundreds of visitors interested in learning additional ways they can make positive changes in their lives that will help protect the planet. “Together we can make a difference,” said Beth Drucker, president of Go Green Wilmette. The event is co-sponsored by the Village of Wilmette. The Wilmette Park District provided shuttle service this year because parking at Gillson Park was unavailable due to construction. Visitors obtained ideas about making changes in their lifestyles with the help of 116 exhibits that would make their communities more sustainable, Some ideas included using solar energy, reducing food waste, exploring nature, gardening, recycling, composting and making household cleaners using nontoxic chemicals. About 1,100 sky photos taken for the SkyDay Project played like a gallery one-at-a-time on a large background screen in the hall. The goal had been 1,000 for the event. Wilmette Junior High students participated in the project. “They contributed about 60 photos to the SkyDay Project,” said Paige Lunde, art teacher. “Some were paintings and drawings. Students did an amazing job.” There were many practical ideas visitors could take home and implement. Some exhibitors gave away free items that would help the environment in the long term. One was a net produce bag in which a store’s fresh vegetables and fruit can be put instead of in a plastic bag that only would be thrown away. The Nature Conservancy gave small packages of seeds with which to grow herbs. The soon to open City- Grange, a destination for urban gardeners, provided a plant bulb for visitors with instructions on how to make it grow. A dollhouse like structure, with modern day energy-efficient amenities, drew much attention with solar panels on the roof and its attached garage. There were in-ground pictures of plants and cutouts of trees that would grow well around the base of the house and along the house’s driveway and sidewalk, ones that would attract natural pollinators like butterflies and birds with plants like orange milkweed and wild strawberries and wild ginger. Local students had additional creative ideas on how to go green at their schools and at home.
