1800, the Protestant Church of <strong>Hungary</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

to drag out a struggl<strong>in</strong>g existence. Brief <strong>in</strong>tervals of<br />

toleration came to vary her long <strong>and</strong> dark night of<br />

persecution. The ceaseless object of attack on the<br />

part of the Jesuits, her privileges cont<strong>in</strong>ued to be<br />

curtailed, her numbers to decrease, <strong>and</strong> her spiritual<br />

life <strong>and</strong> power to decay, till at last the name of<br />

Protestant almost perished from the l<strong>and</strong>.<br />
