Meanwhile his former field of labor the Upper<br />

<strong>Hungary</strong>, was not neglected. This post was<br />

energetically filled by Stephen Szantai, a zealous<br />

<strong>and</strong> learned preacher. His success was great, <strong>and</strong><br />

the bishops denounced Szantai, as they had<br />

formerly done Devay, to the k<strong>in</strong>g, dem<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g that<br />

he should be arrested <strong>and</strong> put to death. Ferd<strong>in</strong><strong>and</strong>,<br />

ever s<strong>in</strong>ce his return from Augsburg, where he had<br />

listened to the famous Confession, had been less<br />

hostile to the new doctr<strong>in</strong>es; <strong>and</strong> he replied, to the<br />

dismay of the bishops, that he would condemn no<br />

man without a hear<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> that he wished to hold a<br />

public discussion on the disputed po<strong>in</strong>ts. The<br />

prelates looked around for one competent to<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> their cause aga<strong>in</strong>st Szantai, <strong>and</strong> fixed on a<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> monk:, Gregory of Grosswarde<strong>in</strong>, who had<br />

some reputation as a controversialist. The k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g appo<strong>in</strong>ted two umpires, who he thought<br />

would act an enlightened <strong>and</strong> impartial part, the<br />

conference took place (1538) at Schasburg.<br />
