BEHIND THE SCENES AT UNCAGED PHOENIX
ebruary is generally the month
where people start to slack on all the
life-changing ideas and plans to which, at the end
of 2018, they pledged their undying dedication. If that
is you, don’t beat yourself up. Life is not a 100-meter
race. It’s a marathon. The fact that you began the
process—envisioning the various ways to improve your
happiness, health, goals and overall value of your life—
is already a great success. You are not alone in this! So
instead of giving up, we are going to figure out a new
game plan together.
For February, instead of concentrating on all of
the distractions, we are going to travel the
unconventional route and give ourselves
some attention. Shocking isn’t it. I know!
For many persons, especially parents, it is
actually seen as taboo to take a moment to focus on you.
Everyone expects us to be perfect all of the time and
to always be there for them when they have problems.
But keeping this up 24/7/365 can be overwhelming
and even toxic. Not only will you lose your drive to be
there for others, you also become less effective in your
approach.
With that in mind, this month’s UnCaged Phoenix
Magazine will offer advice and tools to help you refocus
on you. We all know that it is not always easy to hold on to
the goals that looked so good at the beginning of the year,
especially when real life starts to seep in. So, the enclosed
challenges and tools were developed to provide resources
for and transparency into figuring out what is important.
This will allow us to gain a better understand of what drives
us, reconnect with our Whys and revive the motivation that led
to the resolutions/vision boards/vision contracts in the first place.
In addition, we will be introducing our coaching packages for selfdevelopment
and transformation, as well as for new entrepreneurs and small
business owners.
I believe that, as a community, we can encourage each other and find the push needed to keep
moving forward as we work to accomplish our goals and aspirations.
Cheers to the month of you, your dreams, your health, your business!
Self-
Love
RELATIONSHIPS
ay it with me: “Loving myself is not selfish. Loving myself is necessary for me to
grow as a person.” Good! But quick question…do you believe what you just read?
Whether you realize it or not, having a healthy dose of self-love is an important
key to living a wholesome and flourishing life. Self-love promotes good energy
and influences all the other facets of your existence. Who you choose to love, the
love you offer others, your work ethic and even the manner in which you handle
the problems you face, are significantly affected by the way you value and love
yourself. That’s why your first love affair should be the one you have with you!
Investing time and energy to practicing self-love will challenge the way you see
your ‘self’ and clear out the negative viewpoints you hold, while reinforcing your
value and worth. It can be messy at times, especially as we go deeper into the areas we prefer
to keep hidden. To help you start the process, here are four things that you can do to introduce
and prioritize self-love within your life today:
1
Be compassionate to you: It
is so easy to be understanding of what
others are going through in their lives, yet
somehow be unwilling to do the same thing
for yourself. This makes no sense! Before
you ridicule and judge yourself, allow space
to give grace and show mercy to yourself.
Being honest with ourselves allows us to see
not just our limitations and flaws, but also
our opportunities and gifts. Treating yourself
with kindness first will permit you to give
precedence to the things and individuals
who feed positivity into your life while
rejecting those that do not.
Forgive yourself: Nobody is perfect.
We all have flaws. We all have made bad
decisions. Forgive yourself for your past.
Holding yourself captive because of your
former transgressions is unfair to you. Give
yourself a reset button where you clear the
slate and start fresh. Take the lessons you have
learned with you but leave the blame in the
past. Granting forgiveness to yourself clears
your mental path and allows you to see why
you are worthy of receiving selfcare, respect
and future opportunities to grow.
RELATIONSHIPS
Spend time with you: Wanting time
for yourself does not make you a hermit.
If you love and understand your self-worth
more, you would want to spend more time
wrapped up in the presence of your glow.
Taking time away from distractions provides
the chance for focused introspection, where
you learn, affirm and invest in discovering and
unlocking the love within you. Take time this
day/month/year to date yourself and learn
all of the amazing things which can easily
be drown out by the noise of the crowd.
3
Your first
love affair
should be
4
Don’t forget your self-care:
What healthy activities are you
engaged in? Are you eating nutritious
foods? Do you exercise? How many
hours of sleep do you get each night?
Taking care of your physical body is a
critical part of practicing self-love.
the one you
have with
you!
Veggie Burger Patties
Quinoa preparation:
reetings!
My name is Yayah from Ital Creations
Vegan/Vegetarian Kitchen on the
island of St. Kitts. We are sharing one
of our original recipes: baked veggie
burgers, made from beans or legumes
(of your choice) and quinoa, the ancient
super food from Bolivia, South America,
which is rich in iron and fiber. This recipe
is 100% Vegan, gluten free and a non-soy
product.
Veggie patties can be storage for up to 4 weeks in the
freezer or up to 7 days in the refrigerator. We have many
uses for this recipe in our kitchen and hope you enjoy!
Blessings!
Note: Quinoa is a nutritional boost for
this veggie patty recipe. If you don’t
have Quinoa available...no problem!
Simply skip this part and continue
with the next preparation.
Ingredients:
• 1 cup organic quinoa (any color)
• 2 cups water
• Pinch of pink Himalayan salt or sea
salt
Directions:
Note: This can be made in advance to save
time.
1. Rinse the quinoa with plenty of
water before cooking
2. Add the water, quinoa and salt to a
small pot, cover and bring it to boil
3. Cook on medium flame until the
liquid has dried out
4. Turn off the fire and let it sit to cool
After completely cooling, the cooked
quinoa can be stored in the refrigerator
for a maximum of 3 days until ready to
use.
8 UnCagedPhoenix
Veggie Burger Directions:
1. Using fresh water, soak beans/legumes in a glass jar
with a cover. Leave overnight or for at least 8 hours.
Rinse and drain before use.
2. In the food processor or blender:
a. Process all the ingredients (hydrated beans/legumes,
carrots, seasonings, salt and garlic), except the
quinoa
b. While processing, add water in small amounts until
the mix runs smooth—not liquefied, not hard, but
smooth
Note: If using a blender, the procedure is the same.
However, add small amounts of ingredients at a time to
ensure the mix is blended properly.
c. Always taste the mix to make certain it has enough
seasonings and salt
3. Heat oven to 350°F
4. Line the baking tray with baking sheet(s)
5. Place the processed/blended mixture in a bowl, add
the quinoa and stir thoroughly with a spoon
6. With the mix, make a ball the size of a big cooking
spoon, rest the ball on the baking sheet and press with
your hand to flatten into a patty. Repeat this step with
the remainder of the mix.
7. Bake the patties for at least 25 minutes or until light
brown
8. Remove the patties from the oven and let rest
These health veggie burgers can be combined with salad,
homemade hummus, avocado and fried ripe plantains.
Equipment/Tools & Materials Required:
SELF-CARE
Decluttering & Organizing
Your
Physical/Mental Space
ou may be thinking that this
title doesn’t make any sense.
Clearly this sounds more like a
challenge for the month. What
does cleaning have to do with
self-care? Trust me, I understand
the confusion. We are already
burdened with everything else in our
day-to-day lives and now I am here
suggesting that we should see cleaning as
a form of selfcare?! Don’t panic! There is logic
to the madness!
Life can be very overwhelming, leaving you
feeling out of control and defeated. And though
decluttering may not provide a solution to
all of life’s problems, it can offer the mental
and physical space to cope or address many
issues. And no, you will not always be required
to throw everything and everyone out of your
home or office. There may be a few instances
where this is necessary, however, that is not
being suggested.
Size does not matter:
Even when done in small, incremental
stages, you can take control by decluttering.
Whether it is organizing your jewelry box,
sorting your shoes or cleaning out that one
draw in your work desk, you get to decide
how, when and what the end results will be.
Oh, I see:
Have you ever cleaned out your closet and
found clothes you forgot that you ever
had? By removing what you don’t need,
you are able to see the things that have
always been there. Decluttering allows you
to take a fresh view.
Make room:
By now you may be sensing that
decluttering is not only a physical activity
but an emotional/mental one. By removing
unnecessary items/thoughts, it creates
space for surrounding yourself with
positive things that really matter.
10 UnCagedPhoenix
SELF-CARE
Now take a look at your surroundings, whether
it is at home or on the job.
1. Do you feel free, inspired, positive and
creative?
2. Are there things that you don’t need?
3. Can items be placed in more efficient
ways to make things easier for you?
4. Is there any decluttering/organizing that
you can do today [even if it may take five
to thirty minutes]?
5. Are there things you can donate to
others?
The process of decluttering is not always
a comfortable experience. You may be
emotionally attached to things that are no
longer needed in your life. In those moments,
remember purpose over emotion.
• Take one spot at a time
• Think of creative ways you can express
yourself while reorganizing
• Do not overwhelm yourself by trying to be
perfect or comparing your decluttering
process to others
*If you still need help in motivating yourself for
this process check out Tidying Up with Marie
Kondo on Netflix, or any of the thousands of
cleaning and organizing videos on YouTube. [I
had no idea that there were so many videos.
When I googled “videos on YouTube on
organizing and decluttering” there were about
3,340,000 results.]
A larmy
LIFE’S TOOLS
is my NEW
Best Friend!
his month my family and I are reviewing the Alarmy app. Even though they were highly
unenthusiastic, they still served as very effective test subjects.
The typical alarm allows us to simply hit snooze and roll back into bed, which, if we are honest,
actually defies the whole point of having an alarm in the first place. Alarmy, on the other hand, is
more than a simple alarm app. The creators took it to another level by removing the snooze or silence
button and forcing the user to complete a task, or else the
alarm will go on and on and on. Though some of the tasks
can be easily accomplished (e.g. by shaking the phone, taking
a picture or entering a code), as a mom I found the “Math
Problems” option to be the most effective. In this option, you
can customize the level of difficulty, from easy right up to
difficult, as well as the number of questions to solve.
When you have tweens and teens who are always late
because they have a problem with separating from their
beds on school days, this app does the job and provides
many laughable moments all at once. Blame the inner petty
in me but putting this app on my kids’ phones has given me
so much joy! They now have to wake up on time and still
do Math problems if they want the alarm to stop. This is
priceless and a win-win for all parents everywhere. And did
I mention that it is free!!
Finally, a fun [at least for the parents], effective and
educational way to get your kids out of bed.
I LOVE IT!!!
MONTHLY CHALLENGE
ast month we were Grateful. This month we are going to
challenge ourselves with Self-Kindness.
“But I am kind to myself already…”
Great! Then this challenge will be super easy for you and you
have nothing to worry about.
“I already occasionally practice self-care and I just read the article
on Self Love…why do I need to do this challenge?”
Let’s step back a moment…hear me out for a bit…this is a challenge
designed to help you show kindness to yourself for five days (not even
a full week!). [Oh, and maybe you should consider scheduling a free
30-minute call with us as a first step to uncovering the real root of your
skepticism towards the fact that you are worth five days of effort…just
saying.] But before you dismiss this, why not give it a try? This will be a
worthwhile exercise. What do you say?
Day One
Hug yourself for twenty
seconds every hour.
When we greet people
that we care for, we
often do it by shaking
their hands or giving
them a hug. So, for Day
One, I want you to greet
yourself. Wrap your
arms around yourself
and exhale. Breathe
in and out deeply for
twenty seconds. Allow
yourself to feel your own
embrace. 20 seconds out
of every hour is the least
you can give to yourself.
So then…let’s go…It’s Challenge Time! We will practice Self-Kindness over
the next 5 days.
Self-kindness or self-compassion is defined by Wikipedia as the act of
extending compassion to one’s self in instances of perceived inadequacy,
failure, or general suffering. As you can see, this goes way beyond taking
care of your physical body. This involves forgiving yourself, being kind to
yourself and understanding that just as you can provide kindness to others,
you deserve kindness too.
16 UnCagedPhoenix
Day Two
Write down something
positive about yourself
every hour [yes, we all
know that I love writing].
There are twenty-four
hours in a day, and even if
you sleep for eight hours,
that leaves you with 16
hours—16 things. If you
make good tea, write
that you make good tea.
If you know how to calm
a screaming baby, write
that down. If you have
a great smile, write it
down. [Now don’t cheat
and try to write down
all at one time!] Make
the effort to write one
thing—just one—each
hour. Hold on to this list,
you will need it soon.
Day Three
We all have made
mistakes. We all have
made decisions that have
caused us pain. On Day
Three, I want you to write
a short letter (addressed
to you) asking yourself
for forgiveness for
everything you’ve done
to hurt yourself [told you
that I love writing]. Strive
to be completely honest
and vulnerable with
yourself and write it all
out. Ask for forgiveness
just as you would if you
needed forgiveness
from someone else. Be
humble and tell yourself
the truth.
Day Four
Burn the letter! Now…I
am not proposing
starting a bonfire, but if
that is what it takes and
if you can do it safely—
note…SAFELY— then
burn it. For the rest of
us, a shredder, scissors
or simply tearing up the
letter would suffice. As
you burn/shred/cut/
tear the letter, inhale
and exhale deeply. With
each breath, release the
anger and resentment
that you have held
against yourself for all
of these years. Accept
your imperfections
with compassion and
empathy. Acknowledge,
with sensitivity, that you
are not the same person
you were then and that
you are in the process of
getting better.
Day Five
Verbalize your greatness. We are always surrounded by internal and external
judgement. The constant self-critique can easily become toxic noise. So, on
Day Five, take the list of positive things you wrote down about yourself on Day
Two, and every hour [that you are awake] shout one out. You may want to not
do this in the middle of an office meeting or a library. Instead find a quiet place,
a bathroom, bedroom, closet, roof [safely] and shout it out to the world. For
example, “My name is ____ and I make great tea!” It may feel a bit weird at
first but releasing the words into the world will give you a way of counteracting
all of the negativity you have told yourself and accepted from others.
Yay! The 5 days are over, and you made it! Try to incorporate these
practices into your day-to-day life as a way of showing yourself
compassion/kindness daily. Remember you are worth it!!! UnCagedPhoenix 17
COACHING
ailored
t is no secret that UnCaged Phoenix
offers coaching and consulting
services. Well…maybe it is. While
we are known for imparting words
of encouragement and promoting
inspirational products, providing
oaching
tools and solutions is nothing
new to us, and we offer coaching
packages tailored to meet
personal and/or entrepreneurial
olutions
needs.
You may be wondering why tailored packages—
after all…giving wholesale coaching and
consulting solutions to everyone would be easier.
Unfortunately, it has become the norm for coaches
to offer cookie-cutter services to all clients,
employing a one-size-fits-all strategy. At UnCaged Phoenix, we realize that every individual and
business is unique, and though there are shared commonalities, the distinctive qualities, obstacles
and experiences require a customized and adaptable approach to effectively achieve goals and
aspirations. Yes, this modus operandi does necessitate more investment to foster a deeper level of
engagement with our clients. From our perspective, there is no better means to providing solutions
of real value that stimulate and nurture growth in a client’s personal and business life.
With over two decades of business experience and four years of supplying inspiration at
uncagedphoenix.com, the UnCaged Phoenix team has the diverse background and empathy needed
to deliver tangible research and actionable steps to guide each client, no matter where they are
on their journey. The adaptability of our services, including the expectations for deadlines and
deliverables, are designed to flex to our client’s demanding schedules and lives.
ENTREPRENEUR CORNER
or entrepreneurs, having passion isn’t enough. Though you may have innovative ideas
or possess genuine talent, if you are not willing to put in the work while maintaining
an entrepreneur’s mentality, your business will never grow. In fact, it may never
materialize into anything more than a concept.
As an entrepreneur you have to be willing to combine your passion with a strong mindset.
For example, being great at making hair products does not mean that you won’t have to
work at developing sales techniques, strategy, customer service or learning the ins and
outs of packaging and shipping. In order to survive, a business owner has to be willing to
gain a deeper understanding of the various facets of their given industry, while also adapting
and incorporating knowledge from other industries. Passions and gifts alone will not feed
your kids. Passion and gifts alone will not pay your bills. You have to have the mindset.
ENTREPRENEUR CORNER
To prepare for what it really takes to be an entrepreneur, complete transparency is required.
Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
Are you willing to make real
sacrifices?
Are you ready for the
negativity that comes with
success?
Are you prepared to fail?
Being an entrepreneur is going
to require you saying “no” to
many social engagements—
even if it means losing friends—
so you can devote time to
learning or working. Will you
invest your money into buying
more tools, courses and/or
books to take you to another
level? Or are you more focused
on buying material things and
taking unnecessary trips solely
for the purpose of looking
successful? What are you
prepared to give up to achieve
true success?
Are you prepared to see people
walk away from you when you
become successful? There
are individuals who will try to
break you down when they see
you trying to better yourself,
especially in business. Can you
discern the difference between
real supporters and those who
aim to attach themselves to
you, not in genuine support of
you but to siphon all they can
from you?
Not every business will succeed,
and not every business idea is a
good one. Can you live through
failing or will it break you to
the point where you will never
try again? Every successful
business owner has stories
of failures. Many of them may
never admit to the fact that
they failed more than they
succeeded. Are you prepared
to learn, even if it means
learning from your losses and
failures, so that you can make
necessary adjustments?
