3 Female Students predominantly in Support Roles The high uptake of support roles in peer groups by females students at ALU echos a key challenge of gender equality in the workplace: women being equally represented in numbers but not in influence. Support roles contrast to line roles, which males both at ALU and in Africa at large were found to dominate, in that they do not directly affect the key processes and decision making of an organisation. Thus, they have limited influence. Our hope is that the insights from this report enable ALU to take a data-driven approach with the key next steps serving as guides for steering progress. Furthermore, we challenge all members of the ALU community, students and staff, to identify an area where they can make a difference and do so in their personal capacity. <strong>WLA</strong> believes that by making intentional strides in these three areas of disparity, ALU will significantly improve the female student experience and in turn better prepare women to excel in the working world! 26
