support as any other fan in the world so now we want to 

bring some more of that excitement to the fans right here 

in Kuwait. Every one of the articles in our magazine are

stories of football from around the world that you will not find

Four years ago, Brazil's World Cup elimination courtesy of Germany 

triggered wild howls of grief, newspaper headlines jamming on the 

"shame" and "historic humiliation" of that 7-1 defeat specially in a 

country that defines itself as the “país do futebol”. But this time 

there has been not as much of mourning after what was, by contrast, 

a noble defeat. 

Yet, critics and analysists showed no mercy at dissecting the game. 

James Smart wrote “ Titte didn't do his homework, Martinez is a 

stubborn, detailed, game oriented manager. He drew up a plan that 

incapacitated Brazil's only play. He failed his team, they had no 

response to the PACE and POWER.” 

“Brazil feel the pressure and push the 7-1 generation towards 

retirement," read the home page of the newspaper Folha de São 

Paulo, with Fernandinho – one of the remnants from that 2014 

disaster – facing condemnation. Sports daily “Lance “awarded him 

just 2.5 out of 10 in their player ratings. 

"Yes, he's very good, but he's so stubborn. He was prepared to go to 

the grave with Gabriel Jesus, even as he underperformed. Don't 

come to me saying that he was important tactically; the best tactic 

for a striker is to put the ball in the net. “wrote José Luiz Portella in 

“Lance”. 

Nevertheless, Brazil wanted to avoid the defeat like the plague, the 

samba country held the 2014 World Cup just a year after huge street 

protests fuming by the pompous spending on stadiums. 

After that, everything seemed to nose dive: a multibillion-dollar 

pinching scandal; a zika epidemic; rising violent crime and an army 

takeover of crumbling security services in Rio de Janeiro. 

From the fans’ side, the 32 years old Julia Mayer, sat on a stool 

scrolling through her cellphone messages. “Now Brazil has to worry 

about other things like health and education. The struggle 

continues,” she said. After the ending whistle, people loitered around 

the streets. Yet there was no sign of the shock, some Brazilians 

reminisce from past fiascos, like 1982 – when Brazil’s elite team was 

eradicated by Italy.On a nearby street music loudly heard from a 

house party and four women argued over the game as they passed 

by. “For Brazil to have won this cup would have been an 

embarrassment. The last cup destroyed our country,” whispered 

Estella Resende, 42, a kitchen assistant. And then – like Brazil – the 

women moved on.

1- How did you begin your journey within the 

media sector till your current position? 

I have started gaining experience as an intern 

undergraduate at the news station CNN 

(1990-1991). I had previously held many positions in 

the field of media: I have administered training 

courses at Kuwait University in the major of 

“Television Direction”, been a television director, 

an observer within the Kuwait Television, the 

director of the Channel 2 in Kuwait TV, and 

currently Assistant Undersecretary for Television 

Affairs since 2016. 

2- Do you enjoy your job? Why? 

I enjoy my work a lot as it constitutes a big chunk 

of my life as of a principle I’ve been abiding by 

since childhood: a faithful believer is one who 

whole-heartedly masters his work. I have 

benefited a great deal from being a TV fan and 

from performing TV directing. A man can 

accomplish miracles if he works with passion, 

unlike many people who turn their jobs into a daily 

burdensome chore. 

3- You of course have special skills that made you 

worthy of your position, can you tell us about 

those? 

My education and experience abroad gave me an 

objective technical insight which aided me in the 

selection and modernization of TV programs in 

accordance with the state’s policies, in addition to 

cutting down on expenditure and redistributing 

funds according to the actual needs of the sector. 

4- In your opinion, what is holding back Kuwaiti 

media from further advances? How did you 

contribute to the development of the Kuwaiti 

media? 

Frankly, we need to invest in the young people in 

the media sector, and in developing skills of 

modern technology specially via studying abroad 

to keeping up with modern techniques and 

subsequently applying those new acquired skilled 

to benefit Kuwait. 

Through my work at Kuwait Television I have 

established Al Qrain channel and contributed to 

the achievement of the title “The Most Watched 

Channel” for Kuwait TV for the first time during 

2016-2017, according to the reports from the 

international agency Ipsos Connect. 

I have also made a big change regarding 

benefiting from local talents rather than hiring 

from abroad. 

5- how did the Ministry of 

Information support the Kuwaiti 

series? 

Kuwait TV has always supported 

the local serials that are 

characterized by high quality of 

work in terms of subject matter, 

direction and implementation to 

present the Arab viewers with the 

best quality series. 

6- How do you fight cheap themed 

projects? 

Kuwait TV and the Ministry of 

Information have committees to 

select the quality of the work 

presented to suit the culture of 

Kuwait considering its 

corresponding standards. 

These committees are overseen by 

experts and technicians whose job 

is to spot programs with high 

accuracy and complying 

conditions. 

7- Some systems deliberately 

introduce hidden subliminal 

messages in serials and movies 

that serve their agenda. Is there 

any Kuwaiti censorship on these? 

Has Kuwait adopted this approach 

even for noble purposes? 

It is worth mentioning that many 

channels follow this method but 

we don’t. The Kuwait TV is very 

strict in terms of subject matter so 

all programs are censored 

including kids’ programs. 

We are also working hard to 

intensify the current development 

programs to highlight the plan of 

Kuwait “New Kuwait” in 

cooperation with all ministries in 

accordance with the vision of His 

Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al 

- Ahmad Al - Jaber Al - Sabah 

Al-Sabah. 

8. Are there any topics you 

encourage within the Kuwaiti 

media arts? 

Sure... We encourage projects 

which aim to educate future 

generations, sheds light on the 

positive side of life, and promotes 

respect for our customs and 

traditions. Thus, transforming 

these media projects into a 

reflection of our culture. We also 

encourage kid’s programs; our 

popular kid’s program "Open 

Sesame" echoed all over the Arab 

World. 

9- Are there certain seasons in 

which entertainment media is 

active or idle throughout the year? 

The holy month of Ramadan is one 

of the most active months in which 

most Arab channels are active. 

10. Is it true that you have set 

certain "rules" related to the dress 

code for female broadcasters? 

Why? Does it involve media arts? 

We as a Kuwaiti Muslim 

conservative society strictly 

respect customs and traditions. 

Hence, we consider our 

broadcasting as family oriented 

rather than individually tailored. 

Therefore, a modest classy outfit is 

more conveying to the image of 

Kuwait which is portrayed in media 

projects. 

11- What are the most dangerous 

red lines for Kuwaiti media? 

Any matters related to the violation 

of religions or racism is a red line. 

The media can be a double-edged 

weapon: abusing topics like 

defaming religions or inhumane 

discrimination is enough to destroy 

a country. 

12- Do you support a certain 

football team, why? 

FC Barcelona of course. There are 

a gazillion reasons why one might 

love FC Barcelona, Barcelona have 

some of the best inspirational 

players in the world, a strong 

legacy, they have this ancient 

bloody rivalry with Real Madrid 

and to many people, they are 

extremely likable.

1- كيف كانت بداياتكم في قطاع الإعلام 

وصولا إلى منصبكم الحالي؟ 

بدايتي كانت مع المحطة الاخبارية CNN عام 

‎1991-1990‎حيث عملت فيها كمتدرب 

في فترة ما قبل التخرج.‏ وكنت قد شغلت 

في الماضي الكثير من الوظائف في 

مجال الإعلام:‏ قدمت دورات تدريبية في 

الاخراج التلفزيوني بجامعة الكويت،‏ مخرج 

تلفزيوني،‏ مراقب في ادارة المنوعات في 

تلفزيون الكويت،‏ مدير للقناة الثانية في 

تلفزيون الكويت وصولا لوكيل مساعد 

لشؤون التلفزيون منذ 2016. 

2- هل تستمتع بعملك؟ لماذا؟ 

استمتع بعملي جدا ويأخذ حيزا كبيرا في 

حياتي من مبدأ اتخذته منذ الصغر 

فالمؤمن من أتقن عمله.‏ وقد استفدت 

كثيرا من كوني أعشق التلفزيون 

والاخراج فالإنسان الذي يعمل بالمجال 

الذي يستهويه يمكنه أن يقدم الأفضل 

بعكس الكثير من الناس التي تمارس 

وظائف لا تحبها فعمله يصبح عبء عليه.‏ 

3- لديك بالطبع مهارات خاصة جعلتك 

جدير بمنصبك،‏ هل ممكن أن تطلعنا على 

أهمها؟ 

دراستي وخبرتي بالخارج منحتني نظرة 

ورؤية موضوعية وفنية في اختيار البرامج 

وتطوير أداء البرامج التلفزيونية وتحديثها 

بما يتناسب مع سياسة الدولة في ترشيد 

الانفاق واعادة توزيع تلك المصروفات 

حسب الاحتياج الفعلي للقطاع.‏ 

4- برأيك ماذا ينقص الإعلام الكويتي 

ليتطور أكثر؟ وكيف ساهمتم في تنمية 

الإعلام الكويتي؟ 

بصراحة أكثر ما نحتاجه في الاعلام 

الكويتي ليتطور أكثر هو الاستثمار في 

الشباب في قطاع الاعلام،‏ واكساب 

مهارات حديثة مع تطور التكنولوجيا عن 

طريق السفر للخارج ودخول دورات 

تدريبية لمواكبة العصر الحديث لاستثمار 

ذلك في دولة الكويت.‏ 

من خلال عملي في تلفزيون الكويت 

قمت بتأسيس قناة القرين وساهمت 

بحصول تلفزيون الكويت لأول مره على 

لقب القناة الاكثر مشاهدة بين القنوات 

المحلية في الكويت خلال 2017-2016 وذلك 

حسب تقرير وكالة Ipsos Connect العالمية.‏ 

كما كان من أهم أهدافي الاعتماد على 

الكوادر الشبابية المحلية من وزارة الاعلام 

وتقليص اعداد المتعاونين من الخارج.‏ 

5- ما هو أفضل ما فعلته وزارة الإعلام 

لدعم المسلسلات الكويتية؟ 

تلفزيون الكويت دائما ابدا يدعم 

المسلسلات المحلية التي تمتاز بجودة 

العمل من حيث الموضوع والاخراج 

والتنفيذ ليقدم للمشاهد العربي أفضل 

المسلسلات.‏ 

6- كيف تقومون بمكافحة الأعمال 

الهابطة؟ 

يتميز تلفزيون الكويت ووزارة الاعلام 

بوجود لجان لاختيار جودة الأعمال 

المقدمة لتتناسب مع ثقافة دولة الكويت 

التي تختار الافضل حسب المعاير.‏ 

هذه اللجان يترأسها خبراء وفنيون الذين 

يقومون بدورهم باختيارهم للبرامج بدقة 

عالية وشروط أساسية.‏ 

‎7‎‏-بعض الأنظمة تعمد إلى ادخال بعض 

الرسائل الخفية التي تخدم اجندتها 

داخل المسلسلات والأفلام فهل هناك 

رقابة في الكويت على هذه المور؟ وهل 

اعتمدت الكويت هذا الأسلوب ولو 

لأهداف نزيهة؟ 

الجدير بالذكر ان كثير من القنوات تتبع 

هذا الأسلوب ولكننا في تلفزيون الكويت 

صارمون جدا من حيث هذا الموضوع لذلك 

تخضع للرقابة جميع البرامج مما يشمل 

برامج الاطفال أيضا.‏ 

كما اننا نعمل بجهد لتكثيف البرامج 

التنموية لإبراز خطة الكويت ‏(كويت 

جديدة)‏ بالتعاون مع جميع وزارات دولة 

الكويت بما يتوافق مع رؤية سمو أمير 

البلاد الشيخ صباح الاحمد الجابر الصباح 

حفظه الله ورعاه.‏ 

8- هل من مواضيع تشجعون على تناولها 

في الأعمال الفنية الكويتية؟ 

أكيد...‏ نحن نشجع الاعمال الفنية الكويتية 

التي تهدف لتوعية الاجيال القادمة,‏ القاء 

الضوء على الجانب الايجابي في الحياة 

‏,وعلى احترام عاداتنا وتقاليدنا لتكون 

هذه الاعمال بمثابة سفير للدول الاخرى 

كما نشجع الأعمال الخاصة بالطفل 

العربي كما كان لعمل ‏"افتتح يا سمسم"‏ صدى 

في كل الوطن العربي.‏ 

9- هل هناك مواسم معينة يكون فيها 

الإعلام الترفيهي ناشطا أو خاملا على 

مدار السنة؟ 

شهر رمضان المبارك يعتبر من أكثر 

الاشهر التي تنشط فيها معظم القنوات 

العربية اجمالا 

10- هل صحيح أنك وضعت ‏"قوانين"‏ معيّ‏ نة 

متعلقة بمظهر المذيعات؟ لماذا؟ هل 

يشمل الأمر المشاركين بالأعمال الفنية؟ 

نحن كمجتمع مسلم كويتي مجتمع 

محافظ ويحترم العادات والتقاليد فلابد 

من احترام الشاشة العربية وهي شاشة 

اسرة وليست فرد،‏ فالمظهر المحترم 

الراقي والمحتشم يمثل رقي وليس 

العكس فهو كمرآة تعكس صورة دولة 

الكويت وهذا يشمل الاعمال الفنية.‏ 

11- ما هي أخطر الخطوط الحمراء التي 

تشددون على ألا يتخطاها الإعلام في 

الكويت؟ 

أي امور تتعلق بالتعدي على الدين ونشر 

التفرقة هي خط أحمر.‏ فالإعلام يمكن أن 

يكون سلاح ذو حدين:‏ فاستغلال مواضيع 

كالدين او التفرقة بين الاعراق قادر على 

تدمير الدول.‏ 

12- هل تؤيد فريق كرة قدم معين،‏ 

لماذا؟ 

نادي برشلونة بالطبع.‏ هناك كمٌ‏ هائلُ‏ من 

الأسباب تدفع للمرء لأن يحب برشلونة.‏ 

فنادي برشلونة لديه بعض من أفضل 

اللاعبين في العالم،‏ بالإضافة إلى تاريخ 

حافل بالإنجازات والبطولات،‏ ولديهم 

منافسة حامية مع ريال مدريد،‏ وبالطبع 

لديهم أطنان من المشجعين الأوفياء.‏

WORLD CUP 

الكلب الذي أنقذ كأس العالم

The Apple of the Brits’ eye, 

The Ultimate Trophy 1966 

is to be forever known as 

the year that England won 

the 

World Cup. However, before Bobby 

Moore was able to lift the trophy at 

Wembley, England also managed 

to lose the World Cup and but for a 

dog called Pickles, the Jules Rimet 

Trophy may have stayed lost 

forever. The story of how Pickles 

found the World Cup is over half a 

century old now but there have 

been some recent revelations about 

the theft. As you’ll read though, this 

is a story that has two rather 

unhappy endings and that excludes 

recent England World Cup 

performances. Before the 

tournament began, fans were given 

the chance to see the Jules Rimet 

Trophy that England would 

hopefully be winning. Sir Stanley 

Rous, the President of FIFA, agreed 

that the trophy, which was named 

after a former FIFA President could 

be put on display. It was put in a 

glass cabinet by the Stanley 

Gibbons stamp company as part of 

their Stampex exhibition at the 

Westminster Central Hall. It was 

insured for £30,000 and Rous 

insisted the trophy be guarded 24 

hours a day. 

During World War II the Jules Rimet 

Trophy spent time in a shoe-box 

under a bed in order to stop the 

Nazis getting their hands on it and 

as you’ll read, that’s not the first 

time the World Cup ended up under 

someone’s bed. The Nazis did 

search the apartment but never 

looked under the bed of Italian 

Football Federation President 

Ottorino Barassi, who fearing its 

safety had smuggled it out of the 

bank where it was being held. 

There were actually some stories 

claiming that the trophy teams were 

playing for in 1966 wasn’t the 

original one. Photojournalist Joe 

Coyle claimed that after the trophy 

was sent to West Germany, it 

returned in 1958 and had somehow 

grown by 5cm and had a different 

base but this has never been proved. 

The World Cup Gets However, in 

England it wasn’t so lucky and on 

March 20, 1966 the day after it was 

first displayed, the Jules Rimet 

Trophy was found by security

القصة ‏"كيف وجد بيكلز كأس العالم؟“،‏ 

لكن مزال هناك بعض الغموض يلف 

السرقة.‏ كما ستقرأ،‏ هذه قصة لها 

نهايتان غير سعيدتان باستثناء أداء 

الإنكليز في مباريات كأس العالم آن 

ذلك الوقت.‏ 

قبل انطلاق البطولة،‏ حصل المشجعون 

على فرصة لرؤية كأس جول ريميه 

الذي كان من المؤمل أن تفوز بها 

إنجلترا.‏ وافق السير ستانلي روس،‏ 

رئيس الفيفا وقتها على وضع كأس 

العالم قيد العرض ليتسنى للجماهير 

تمتيع أنظارهم بهذا الكاس الأخّ‏ اذ،‏ 

والذي تمت تسميته تيمناً‏ بأحد رُؤساء 

الفيفا السابقين.‏ تم وضعه في خزانة 

زجاجية من قبل شركة ستانلي جيبونز 

كجزء من معرض ستامبكس في قاعة 

وست منستر المركزية وتم التأمين 

عليه مقابل 30،000 جنيه إسترليني 

وأصر السير ستانلي روس على أن يتم 

حراسة الكأس على مدار 24 ساعة في اليوم.‏ 

خلال فترة الحرب العالمية الثانية،‏ أمضى

was being used for church services.

You really wouldn’t have wanted to 

be the person who had to tell Sir 

Stanley Rous the news that the 

World Cup had been stolen would 

you? The following day, Joe Mears, 

the chairman of the English FA, 

received a phone call saying he’d 

receive a parcel at Chelsea FC. It 

arrived and contained the 

removable lining from the top of the 

trophy and a ransom demand for 

£15,000. If it wasn’t paid by Friday, 

then the World Cup would be 

melted down. 

Mears contacted the police and he 

met with the wonderfully named 

Detective Inspector Buggy of the 

Flying Squad. It was arranged to 

pay the ransom to a man known as 

‘Jackson’ but using mainly blank 

paper. A meeting was arranged for 

Battersea Park in London and the 

suitcase handed over. 

On their way to collect the trophy 

from where it had been hidden, 

‘Jackson’ spotted the Flying Squad 

van that was following them and 

soon after jumped out of the 

moving car and did a runner, well as 

good a runner as you can do after 

jumping out of a moving vehicle. He 

was eventually captured in a 

garden and identified as Charles 

Bletchley, a petty thief. 

Bletchley denied stealing the 

trophy and claimed he had been 

paid £500 by a man he knew only 

as "the Pole" to act as the 

middleman. He told the police that 

if they let him out on bail he could 

go and get it, the police refused him 

bail and he was charged with 

stealing the trophy and 

subsequently sentenced to two 

years in jail. But still the World Cup 

PICKLES BECAME A 

STAR AFTER THE 

CUP WAS FOUND 

was missing Pickles to the Rescue 

On March 27, David Corbett was out 

walking his cross-bred collie dog 

Pickles in Upper Norwood, south 

London. All of a sudden, the dog 

pulled him towards his neighbour’s 

car and there was something 

wrapped up in paper. Corbett was a 

bit concerned that it might be an IRA 

bomb but amazingly it turned out to 

be the missing Jules Rimet Trophy. 

It’s almost like an episode of 

‘Lassie,’ you could imagine Pickles 

barking at his owner who replies, 

‘What’s that Pickles, the World Cup 

is over there by that car, ok let’s 

have a look.’ 

took the World Cup to the local 

police. At first, they suspected that 

he might have something to do with 

the theft of the trophy, but 

investigations have never proved a 

link between him and those who did 

steal it and he received £6,000 as a 

reward for finding the World Cup. 

The nation rejoiced, and Sir Stanley 

Rous gave out a huge sigh of relief 

to see the trophy returned and it 

went back to FA HQ for 

safe-keeping 

Pickles became a star after the cup 

was found and he was even invited 

to the party held after England won 

the World Cup and probably scoffed 

down every sausage there. In the 

following year, Pickles got his own 

agent and appeared on several TV 

shows. Pickles was named ‘Dog of 

the Year’ and awarded a year of free 

food by pet manufacturers Spillers.

while he was chasing a cat. His 

owner buried Pickles in his back 

garden and to this day, his collar is 

on display at the National Football 

Museum in Manchester. Forty years 

after Pickles found the World Cup, 

an ITV drama called ‘Pickles: The 

Dog Who Won the World Cup’ was 

filmed with Pickles voiced by Harry 

Enfield. The Replica Worried the 

trophy might get stolen again, the 

FA secretly arranged for a replica to 

be made even though FIFA didn’t 

allow this. The replica was even on 

display at the celebration event held 

after England won the trophy. 

When 1970 came and the 

real-World Cup had to be returned 

to FIFA, the replica spent several 

years under its creator’s bed It was 

eventually sold at a 1997 auction for 

£254,500 and ironically it was FIFA 

who purchased it. There were even 

rumours that it wasn’t the replica 

but the real deal, but tests showed It 

was a replica and is now on display 

at the English National Football 

Museum. 

Recent Revelations The 

long-running story of the Jules 

Rimet Trophy still rumbles on to this 

very day. A recent investigation by 

the Mirror newspaper claims that 

the trophy was stolen by Sidney 

Cugullere, known in gangland as 

‘Mr Crafty.’ 

It’s alleged that he committed the 

robbery with the help of his brother 

Reg just for the thrill of it and at one 

time hid it in a shed. They realised 

there was no way it could be sold so 

that’s probably why it just got 

dumped. 

The description given by police at 

the time does match ‘Mr Crafty’ and 

the investigation claims that at one 

stage his brother Reg was stopped 

by the police who searched his car 

but failed to spot that the World Cup 

was under the front seat. Neither of 

the brothers were arrested and 

Sidney is said to have often joked 

that he lifted the World Cup long 

before Bobby Moore. 

Sidney died in 2005 and his brother 

Reg passed away seven years later. 

It’s said that both of their funerals 

had wreaths in the shape of the 

Jules Rimet trophy and the order of 

service for Reg’s funeral included a 

photo of the World Cup.

and take pride, with Croatia finishing as second place 

and Belgium claiming third spot in a tournament that left us with 

many unforgettable memories. 

Paradox winked at the sworn Croatian enemies, Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic, who were the 

gladiators of the team as they’ve went through a lot of storms and still reached final following three 

extra-time periods and two penalty strikes in their legs. The Barcelona midfielder, Ivan Rakitic ,was left 

engulfed with arrogance after seeing his Real Madrid rival and Croatia team-mate, Luka Modric, hailed the 

best player at World Cup 2018, they were swept in a game of glory, just like Belgians who were about to touch 

the Cup before being beaten in the semi-final. 

Roberto Martinez proudly stood watching the skills of his three musketeers; Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard, 

and Kevin De Bruyne as they climbed to the bronze medal spot. They have conquered Brazil in the 

quarter-final and their counter-attacks were wildly stunning and equally fatal. 

Even the Russian authorities and police had chance to shine in the tournament as their unprecedented 

security measures and safety standards prevented the ultras and other fellow hooligans from acting out 

or merely showing up at the stadiums. 

Everything went smoothly and even the host nation outdid their potentials by reaching the 

quarter-final. 

Video Assistant Referee also appeared for the first time is world cup history for it has now 

claimed a steady place among football main elements. It helped the referee by highlighting 

various mistakes and was an achievement in a World Cup in which modest teams have 

unexpectedly risen a step and made it a tournament of numerous surprises. 

Sweden reached the last eight, Iran hard-pressed Portugal and Spain to their 

boundaries, planet Japan shuddered Belgium before being eradicated and 

not to mention cleaning up their dressing room. 

THE GOOD 

But not everything sparkled under the tournament’s 

flood lights. 

In a World Cup that is being discussed as one of the 

best of recent editions, it also had some less positive 

aspects. 

While the organisation, services, logistics and transport 

were immaculate, some of the over qualified teams’ 

performances weren’t impressive in any way. 

The premature elimination of the reigning champions: 

Germany, Argentina, Brazil, and Spain shocked fans all 

over the world. 

Likewise, giant players like Robert Lewandowski, Neymar, Thomas Muller, and Lionel Messi documented 

awful disappointment after all of the bright hopes placed upon them. 

Another nasty smack came with boundless displeasure of the African and Arab nations. 

Egypt, Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco and Nigeria all exited even before the group stage and left them 

without significant representation for the first instance since 1982.

How many times did many European football fans 

expressed their displeasure upon hearing football 

described as ‘soccer’. As the word ‘soccer’ comes up, it 

is frequently preceded by remarks about how it is an 

American expression that constitutes an insult to 

beautiful game. 

Without a doubt the expression ‘soccer’ is recognized 

as American, their top league is the MLS which stands 

for Major League Soccer. However Americans can get 

away with that since American Football is a major 

sport in America and way more popular than soccer. 

Nevertheless if we need a scapegoat to be blamed for 

the horrible term “soccer” then perhaps we can go 

back to trace those who invented football, no other but 

the English people. 

The first use of the word soccer dates back to year 

1895 save for that one man who has been using the 

term even before then and his name was Charles 

Wreford Brown. It’s believed that during the Victorian 

era, Oxford students found it entertaining to use the 

suffix ‘-er’ for abbreviations of every word .Rugby 

became rugger and thanks to Wreford Brown, 

association football became known as ‘soccer’ to 

distinguish it from rugby. 

Therefore, the next time you get dreadfully irritated by 

the term “soccer”, don’t over exhaust your imagination 

to find ways to blame it on the Yankees. Wreford 

Brown your man. But before you set off scolding the 

man, maybe you ought to take notice of his story. 

Wreford Brown was one of England’s prominent 

amateur football players who played for Old 

Carthusians and Corinthians clubs in central midfield. 

His performance was outstanding, and his talent 

brought him a position in the England national team, 

in conjunction with professional players. 

Back in the 1890’s, there was a segregate among 

professional and amateur players and the ambience 

between the two groups of players was frequently 

frigid throughout international get togethers. 

Several amateur players decided not to converse with 

professional players and they often travelled in split 

train carriages and changed in separate dressing 

rooms. If this was the case today then the chaos could 

be surreal: for example if the England camp was split in 

two and players refused to share the dressing room 

with someone who was playing at a rival club ,how 

preposterous would that look? 

In 1898 in a match against Scotland, Wreford 

Brown was appointed captain of the England 

team. A professional player, Fred Wheldon scored 

the first goal of the game for England. As the 

Aston Villa forward made his way back towards 

his team buddies, Wreford Brown probed into his 

shorts or knickerbockers as they were known then 

and produced a gold sovereign and handed it to 

Wheldon and when Steve 

Bloomer scored

THE BEGINNINGS 

OF INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL 

The first ever international football 

match was between England and 

Scotland in March 1870, in a match 

which finished 1-1. This would be the first 

of five meetings during 1870-72, with 

England winning three and two ending 

level. However, as every Scottish player 

in every match was English-based, these 

early internationals caused uproar. 

Basically, the English FA arranged 

everything from the date, location, and 

players for both sides. Therefore, all five 

matches were made unofficial 

internationals. 

The first officially recognised 

association football international took 

place in November 1872, in Scotland, 

between the same two countries. The 

match ended in a goalless draw. 

Thirteen years later, in 1885, the first 

international match outside Great 

Britain took place. This was held in 

Newark, New Jersey as the United 

States lost 1-0 to Canada

THE FORMATION OF FIFA 

World football continued to grow and this led to the 

formation of FIFA in 1904, with Robert Guerin as the first ever 

president and seven founding members. These members 

were France, Denmark, Belgium, Sweden, Spain, The 

Netherlands, and Switzerland. 

The first tournament which FIFA presided over was held in 

1906, but turned out to be a huge failure. This heralded the 

end of Guerin’s presidential run and he was replaced by 

Englishman Daniel Burley Woolfall In 1908, football was 

played as an official event at the Olympic Games in London. 

This came after it had been played as a demonstration sport 

in the two previous Olympics. Expansion of FIFA to include 

non-European nations came with South Africa joining in 

1909, and they were followed by Argentina in 1912.

CREATION OF 

THE WORLD CUP 

As the popularity of the sport grew, so 

did the need for a worldwide 

tournament. Thus, the World Cup was 

created. The 1924 and 1928 Olympic 

Games, both won by Uruguay, were 

considered to be the first ever football 

world championships. FIFA president 

Jules Rimet decided it was time for a 

world championship held outside of 

the Olympics, which would be hosted 

by the reigning world champions in 

1930.Selected nations were invited to 

take part but the tournament would be 

a logistical challenge due to where it 

was being played. Therefore, no 

European nation would initially sign up 

for it. However, two months before the 

competition, Rimet persuaded 

Belgium, Yugoslavia, Romania, and 

France to take part. 

The first ever World Cup tournament 

consisted of thirteen teams, with seven 

South Americans, Four European, and 

the other two from North America. 

July 13th, 1930 was the kick off 

date, with France beating Mexico 

and the USA defeating Belgium in 

opening games which were played 

simultaneously. After eighteen 

days of competition, more than 

68,000 spectators watched as 

host-nation Uruguay defeated 

Argentina 4-2 in the first ever World 

Cup Final.After the success of the 

first World Cup, it was agreed a 

second would take place four years 

later. 

The 1934 edition was held in Italy, 

marking the first World Cup to be 

held in Europe, and was the first in 

which teams had to qualify After a 

qualifying campaign consisting of 

thirty-two teams, sixteen qualified 

for the finals and took part in the 

fifteen-day tournament. Only four 

of the sixteen qualifiers were 

non-European, and included Egypt 

as the first ever African nation to 

play in the World Cup finals. 

Uruguay, the defending champions 

did not take part. 

Hosts Italy won the tournament, 

beating Czechoslovakia After Extra 

Time in the final. 

The 1938 World Cup would be the 

last before World War 2 broke out, 

and featured just three 

non-European teams. These were 

Brazil, Cuba, and the Dutch East 

Indies (now Indonesia)The host 

nation, France, and holders Italy 

were given automatic qualification 

for the tournament and another 

fourteen qualified. Austria 

withdrew after qualifying, so only 

fifteen teams took part.Italy won 

their second World Cup, beating 

Hungary 4-2 in the final.

EXPANSION 

OF THE WORLD CUP 

The maximum number of teams who competed at 

the finals of a World Cup was sixteen, until 1982 

when twenty-four teams took part in Spain. This was 

also the first year in which a penalty shoot-out 

would take place. The first winners of this larger 

tournament were Italy, who won their third World 

Cup in the process.Twenty-four finalists took part in 

the next three tournaments, until that number was 

raised to thirty-two for the 1998 World Cup in France. 

The 2002 World Cup was a record-breaking one. It 

was the first World Cup to be held outside of Europe 

or the Americas, as well as being the first held by 

joint hosts. Japan and South Korea put on a 

spectacular tournament which was won by Brazil, 

who became world champions for a fifth time. 

Starting as just an idea, the World Cup has become 

the biggest international football tournament in the 

world. It has been won by eight different nations, 

with Brazil winning five, and both Germany and Italy 

winning four apiece. Argentina and Uruguay are 

two-time winners, whilst England, France, and Spain 

have won one World Cup each.

AFTER THE WAR 

With the 1942 and 1946 World Cups being cancelled, 

due to the war, the next playing of the tournament 

would come in 1950 in Brazil. This was the first 

World Cup to include British teams, with England 

being the only one to take part in the finals after 

Scotland withdrew when they could only finish 

second in British qualifying. Again, sixteen teams 

qualified but only thirteen took part after India and 

Turkey both withdrew citing financial reasons. 

Returning 1930 champions Uruguay would win the 

World Cup for a second time, after topping a final 

group stage which also included Brazil, Sweden, 

and Spain.The first, and only, World Cup to be held 

in Britain was in 1966. This is also the only time a 

British team has won the World Cup; which England 

did by beating West Germany in the final. 

After the Brazilians won the World Cup for a third 

time in 1970, they were allowed to keep the Jules 

Rimet trophy. The new World Cup trophy was first 

won by West Germany in 1974.

A quick look at the Old Trafford trophy cabinet 

reveals the Community Shield (for a little while 

at least), the EFL Cup and the Europa League 

trophy. Now most clubs would die for that to be 

the case but fans of Manchester United still 

aren’t that happy with what’s happening at their 

club. The glory days of winning the Premier 

League are a bit in the past and the fans want to 

see those days return as soon as possible. 

Considering the millions of pounds that have 

been invested in the past few seasons, it’s 

almost unbelievable that United never even 

looked like title contenders last season. You 

don’t go around breaking world transfer records 

and hoping you might finish in the top four.

THEIR CLUB 

I’m not quite sure how you feel when supposed 

to be ‘The Special One’ and you look back at the 

last couple of seasons in English football. One 

minute you’re the hero of Chelsea, then it all 

goes wrong and then you end up at Old Trafford. 

A season later, Chelsea have gotten themselves 

sorted out without many players being added to 

the team ‘the Special One’ had such success and 

failure with, and your United team end up 24 

points behind them. 

United did at least manage to turn Old Trafford 

into a fortress last season. The trouble is that 

although few teams win there anymore, United 

don’t exactly win that many either. The only 

game they lost at home was to Manchester City 

but the other 18 games produced just eight wins 

and ten draws. Those points dropped were 

enough to wreck their hopes of reaching the 

Champions League through league position 

rather than what you can do on a Thursday

doubt about the Ramos’s 

brilliant strategies and talent in 

football, but recently his Hollywood 

level dramatic acting and martial arts 

skills are coming to surface; a two more 

achievements to be added to his list of 

talents on the turf. 

Even though Sergio Ramos lifted 

another Champions League trophy, his 

involvement in an incident in the match 

with Juventus left a lot of speculations. 

Ramos pulled out a trick on Juventus 

substitute Juan Cuadrado. When the 

Colombian sprinted to get the ball and 

yield a throw-in, he hastily brushed 

Ramos sidewise, unintentionally 

trapping him with his studs and then 

went normally to resume the game. But 

Ramos theatrically collapsed to the 

ground, as if he was just been gunned 

down by a sniper, feigning injury and 

convulsing wildly. Even referee Felix 

Brych was conned and ended up 

waving a second yellow card for 

Cuadrado. Juventus – already in the 

swamp – were down to 10 men, their 

job made grimmer by Ramos and his 

theatrical hoax for which he deserves 

an Oscar.

After the Jabulani ball design fiasco in 2010, adidas were 

under pressure to deliver ahead of this year’s tournament 

in Brazil, and with the tournament almost done, they can 

be pretty proud of their effort. Technically speaking, the 

Brazuca ball is made from six thermally-molded panels, 

the ball used in the UEFA Champions League, and is 

predominantly white, but with flashes of green, red and 

blue, designed not only for looks, but also to assist the 

goal-line technology which debuted at Brazil 2014. 

The Brazuca is also unique in having become the first ball 

to be named by popular vote, as Brazilians were 

canvassed of their opinions online before the ball was 

released. They chose brazuca, a slang phrase meaning 

“mate,” or “our fellow,” but taken to represent the 

Brazilian way of life, and particularly the Brazilian 

community abroad

The Invention of Kit Sponsorship 

On 24 January 1976, Southern League in Kettering Town became the 

first British club to play with a sponsor's name on its shirts, after 

signing a deal with Kettering Tyres, when its players turned out 

against Bath City The "four-figure" agreement had been brokered by 

Derek Dougan within a month of his appointment as the club's chief 

executive. The FA immediately ruled the move offside and ordered 

the slogans to be removed, despite Dougan's claim that the game's 

national rulers had never put their 1972 ban on sponsorship in 

writing. "I find it inconceivable that petty-minded bureaucrats have 

only this to bother about," he complained at the time. 

In response, Dougan tried nutmegging his opponents. He changed 

the wording on the shirts to "Kettering T” and claimed that the T 

stood for "Town". But the FA was having none of it and ordered the 

club to do what it was told. Faced with the prospect of a £1,000 fine, 

Kettering relented. But the FA's victory was a Pyrrhic one. 

Kettering, backed by Bolton Wanderers and Derby 

County, subsequently lobbied the FA to allow 

shirt sponsorship, and in June 1977 the 

ban was lifted.

most clubs are named after the city in which they play: Manchester

formed the club in 1886. The Royal Arsenal was an armaments factory

plonked the ball in the back of their own net 149 times, 

in protest over a refereeing decision. 

The English Football Association believe that the 149-0 

scoreline represents a new world record. "I certainly 

think it's a world record," said the FA's

A great example at the 2018 World 

Cup is England. Despite boasting

players, little was expected of the 

team in Russia. However, as they

fans in England resurrected 

‘Football’s Coming Home’, a song 

created by Frank Skinner and 

David Baddiel for the 1996 

European Championship. 

The English have backed their

tournament, some were not surprised 

to see their team fail. 

Both Portugal and Argentina joined 

Spain by leaving Russia immediately 

following the Round of 16. Two years 

ago, Portugal arrived home to a 

tremendous welcome as they won the 

2016 European Championship. 

However, the mood was more sombre 

as they jetted back to their homeland 

having lost 2-1 to Uruguay. 

Portuguese fans were left 

disappointed but they

An Argentina fan in Russia spoke after 

the Croatia game and said, “I'm 

ashamed of this shirt. Right now, I want 

to burn it. Where was Messi? Where 

were Argentina?” 

The mood did not improve following 

the 4-3 loss at the hands of France in 

the Round of 16 and Argentina went 

home with one win under their belts 

against Nigeria. Given the way they 

qualified for the tournament, perhaps 

the expectation of the team was too 

high and fans were left angry as 

Argentina left the tournament. 

Both England and Belgium bowed out 

at the semi-final stage and the reaction 

seemed to differ between the two sets 

of players and fans.

Belgium were happy to win the 

third/fourth placed playoff between the 

teams and celebrated finishing third, their 

highest position ever at a World Cup. 

They were unlucky to lose 1-0 to France in 

their semi-final but lost to a very good 

team and the media seemed to accept this 

fact. Belgium most certainly have the 

quality to win the 2020 European 

Championship. 

The fans were out in their thousands to 

welcome the Belgian players home. This 

backing from the supporters will mean a 

lot to the Belgium team and they were 

clearly thrilled to arrive home in style.

and having enjoyed a comfortable 

route through to the semi-final, it was 

an opportunity missed to reach the 

final. The media generally enjoyed a 

good relationship with the team and 

many were happy to have seen the 

team reach the semi-final. However, 

some sections of the media and the 

fans were more critical. Many 

supporters on social media feel 

England did not play well enough 

throughout the tournament, relying on 

the kindness of the draw to progress 

rather than their own ability. 

The England players returned home 

behind closed doors and they were not 

presented to the fans or the media. It 

was an understated return to the 

country for the team, who seemed 

happy to get back to their families and 

friends. 

Nonetheless, the overall reception the 

England manager and players received 

was been the best since Italia 90 and 

certainly gives them some hope for the 

future. 

France and Croatia met in the final, 

with France running out as worthy 

winners to lift the trophy. The fans will 

be waiting in Paris to welcome the 

team home and there is sure to be a 

celebration in the French capital. 

France always had the talent to win 

the tournament but many supporters 

were not convinced Didier Deschamps 

was the man to carry them forward. 

Croatia’s players also returned home as 

heroes. They arguably played the better 

football in the final, despite losing the 

game and came back to win in extra-time 

in three knock-out matches. A huge 

street parade in Zagreb to welcome the 

players home took place as they have 

landed on a specially-branded Croatia 

Airlines Airbus 319. 

There were two open-air buses traveling 

along the route and its was a very special 

day in the history of Croatian football, 

with over 100,000 people welcomed the 

team home. 

The World Cup clearly has the power to 

bring people together in celebration. 

There are always winners and losers in 

football and it is interesting to see the 

response from the fans around the globe. 

Reaching the final for Croatia was 

success in itself whereas losing in the 

quarter-final for Brazil was a massive 

disappointment and this has been 

reflected in the response of the public. 

Prior expectation is what drives many 

responses to football results but nothing 

can beat the feeling of winning the World 

Cup.

From an English point of view, the 

biggest moment was winning the 

penalty shootout against Colombia in 

the Round of 16. England have a torrid 

history of penalty shootouts at the 

World Cup, losing out at the 1990, 1998 

and 2006 World Cup. When Jordan 

Henderson missed his penalty against 

Colombia, it seemed as though history 

was about to repeat itself. The 

composure of Jordan Pickford in goal 

came to England’s rescue and they won 

their first penalty shootout in the history 

of the tournament 

Prior to the 2018 World Cup final, we 

had seen 66 goals scored in World Cup 

final matches and not one of them was 

an own goal. Unfortunately for Mario 

Mandzukic, he became the first player 

in the history of the tournament to 

score an own goal in the final. There 

was not a great deal Mandzukic could 

do as he tried to head the ball clear but 

the Juventus striker landed a World Cup 

‘first’ that no one would have wanted.

VAR 

The 2018 World Cup saw the first use of the Video Assistant Referee. The 

introduction of VAR has caused a great deal of controversy around the football 

community but it proved useful throughout the tournament, helping to make 

the right decision most of the time. However, there was one incident in the 

final which caused much controversy. France won a corner and as the ball 

was whipped into the penalty area, it struck the hand of Croatia’s Ivan Perisic. 

Having not awarded a penalty, the referee was asked to review the decision 

on his monitor and after much deliberation he awarded the penalty to France. 

Many onlookers believe this was the wrong decision but it was the first time 

VAR has been used in a World Cup and the first time a penalty has been 

awarded using the system in a World Cup final

Japan enjoyed a remendous 

tournament and progressed to the 

Round of 16 from a tough group. 

However, while the country celebrated 

their success, it was the manner in 

which they qualified which drew much 

of the attention. Japan finished level on 

points, goal difference and goals scored 

with Senegal but it was the fact they 

received fewer yellow cards which 

allowed them to qualify for the 

knockout stages. It’s the first time a 

team has qualified for the Round of 16 at 

World Cup on the fair play rule.The 

2018 World Cup also witnessed the 

debut of two teams, Panama and 

Iceland. Neither team managed to 

progress to the knockout stages but it 

was the first time they have played in 

the tournament and both nations will 

be hoping it is not their last. While Egypt 

failed to progress beyond the group 

stages, Essam El-Hadary, at 45 years 

and 161 days, broke the record for the 

oldest player to appear at a World Cup.

the last two World Cup winners, France and 

Germany, sends the ball gracefully rolling 

for the first time ever as the opening UEFA 

Nations League gets under way. The 

new-fangled tournament has the 55 

European national teams fragmented into 

four divisions, taking the “promotion and 

relegation” to international football while 

also offering a different path to the 2020 

European Championship, without replacing 

the qualifiers themselves. 

Here's the whole lot you want to know about the 

new competition: 

1-LESS POINTLESS FRIENDLIES 

Because smaller nations find it difficult to arrange 

friendly games, so Uefa believe they have come up 

with the perfect solution. They employed their own 

coefficient to allocate their 55-member nations 

into four leagues: the top 12 sides all in League A, 

the next 12 are in League B, trailed by 15 in League C 

and the bottommost 16 in League D.Each assembly 

contains three or four teams, with everyone 

playing each other home and away between 

September and November this year. 

2-FINAL FOUR 

The front-runners of the four groups in League A 

will proceed to the finals from 5-9 June next year. 

Semifinals, a third-place competition and a final 

will all be played, with the host country to be 

chosen in December from among the finalist 

teams. 

The team finishing lowermost of each group in 

Leagues A, B and C will be relegated, and 

substituted by those finishing top of the groups in 

Leagues B, C and D. 

3-EURO 2020 PLACES AVALABLE 

There are going to be qualifiers for the 24-team 

Euro 2020. They will take place from March to 

November 2019, with a draw to take place this 

coming December in addition to twenty teams that 

will be in the running Euro 2020 from qualifying, 

with the top two in each of the 10 groups 

advancing. The remaining four places will be 

decided in March 2020, in the Nations League 

playoffs. 

Each of the four leagues (A, B, C and D) will hold 

games which will take place during March 2020. 

Yet, if a group winner has already qualified via the 

classic route, then their spot will go to the next 

best-ranked team in their league. And if a league 

does not have four teams to participate, the 

remaining slots are assigned to teams from 

another league. In other words, one place at Euro 

2020 will go to a team from League D, included of 

the continent's traditional nobodies.
