GBN students, staff members explore
passions during Spartans Connect

Glenbrook North students
took a break from
their usual school schedules
and put academics
aside for a day to further
explore their passions
during the school’s biennial
Spartans Connect day
on March 13.
The event consisted of
160 different sessions that
gave GBN students the
chance to celebrate their
interests and hobbies,
while simultaneously
finding connections with
GBN teachers and administrators.
The wide-ranging set of
sessions presented offered
students the chance to
shoot baskets with GBN
principal Dr. John L. Finan,
cook with faculty
members, try improv with
Second City actors, ballroom
dance, connect with
local professional and
sing along to their favorite
Broadway tunes. Other
one-of-a-kind sessions
included “The Office”
trivia, balloon twisting, a
GBN-based rendition of
the popular game show
“Family Feud” and even
a “Bachelor”-themed discussion.
Topics of each session
differed, but the opportunity
to connect with
staff members outside of
academics was present no
matter the subject.
“Spartans Connect is a
way for us to build community,
it’s a way for us
to put aside the academics
for a day, and attend sessions
that are aligned with
students interests, hobbies
and passions,” Finan
said. “It’s also a way for

staff members to connect
with students that they
might not know otherwise
... whether it’s a session
about Cajun cooking, or
three-point shooting, it’s
another way to make connections.
“The sessions we offer
are pretty diverse in terms
of interests — you can
make cupcakes, you can
play basketball, you can
hear from a 757 pilot talk
about their job. There’s
a lot of options for students.”
Students were given the
opportunity to select the
sessions they attended,
as a way to ensure they’d
engage in sessions they
found intriguing. Doing
so is something that
makes the day of workshops
even more positive
for students.
“Those that attend today
always have positive
feedback,” Finan said.
“They are given the opportunity
to select their
sessions, so it’s really in
line with their interests.”
This year’s Spartans
Connect day was the
school’s fifth annual. Finan
said this year’s version
had more career-focused
sessions than years
prior, with nearly 40 guest
presenters offering specialized
sessions on their
career focuses. Some of
these sessions included:
intro to being a financial
advisor, digital social media
entrepreneurship, how
to program computers,
how to be a venture capital
investor, multiple panel
discussions, and more.
Each session throughout
the day was led and
taught by community
members, business leaders,
teachers, parents or
