I constant BADAN—THE
call for
regional integration
yesterday became a subject
of debate in Ibadan, as
The Director-General of
Western Nigeria (DAWN),
Mr. Seye Oyeleye,
admonished newly elected
Daniel vows never to abandon
Atiku
By Olasunkanmi
Akoni
FORMER governor of
Ogun State, Gbenga
Daniel has said that he will
never abandon the Peoples
Democratic Party, PDP,
Presidential candidate,
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
Daniel, former Director-
General of the Atiku
Campaign Organisation,
had resigned his
membership of the PDP on
Saturday and announced
that he was quitting
partisan politics.
After the announcement,
Daniel made a U-turn
when he expressed his
readiness to join the All
Progressives Congress,
APC, after his supporters
urged him to lead them to
the ruling party.
Commenting on this,
Femi Fani-Kayode, a
South-West to make
regional integration the
fulcrum of their
government.
He made the call
during a round table
conference organized by
a group, ‘Majeobaje
Movement’ in Ibadan,
Oyo State, where all
concerned Yoruba
former Minister of Aviation,
said it was sad that Daniel
decided to dump the
opposition party “before the
conclusion of Atiku’s
election petition.”
Fani-Kayode also accused
Daniel of taking sides with
President Muhammadu
Buhari after Abubakar was
“rigged out.”
In his reaction, yesterday,
Daniel said he had not
abandoned the former vicepresident.
He also denied joining
the APC, explaining that he
told his followers to “join any
political party of their choice.
According to him: “I have
not, will not and will never
abandon Atiku. Atiku is
different from PDP. I have
resigned from PDP and lost
interest in partisan politics
having put in about 20 years
of my life in a thankless
process.
“I will commit my Godgiven
resources to help less
privileged through my
stakeholders converged
to discuss the future of the
regional integration
themed: “Yorubaland
Beyond 2019: Let’s Set
forth with DAWN.”
Oyeleye mandated
governors-elect of Oyo,
Ogun and Lagos as well as
the lawmakers-elect across
the south-west to embrace
DAWN’s ultimate agenda
of regional integration.
Foundation and will contribute
sharing the body of
knowledge through our not
for profit Political Academy.
That will be a thankful process.
“I will continue to
support the political
process in a non partisan
manner. I am clear with my
position, without any
ambiguity. There is no
need to insinuate,
speculate, extrapolate,
anticipate or draw
conclusions on my behalf.
“I did not expect such a
simple personal decision
can generate such national
discourse and for that I
remain grateful to God. I am
however most grateful to all
my friends and well
wishers. The phones have
not stopped ringing.''
PDP South-west elders fault
2019 general elections
By Gabriel Olawale
AGOS—PEOPLES
Party,
PDP, elders, in the South
West, yesterday described
the recently conducted
2019 general elections as a
flop characterized with
deliberate sabotage,
treachery and outright
banditry.
The elders, who
expressed their
displeasure at a state of
the nation meeting in
Lagos, said that the
present electoral
processes wherein result
sheets are physically
carried across the nation
are absolutely primitive
and apparently susceptible
to all kinds of distortions.
“Some benefits of such
integration includes
collective opportunities as a
bloc, attaining selfsustenance
and enhancing
Internally Generated
Revenue (IGR) through the
harmonization of taxes and
levies within the region,”
while urging the governorselect
to tie their agenda
around the mentioned
benefits in their respective
states.
He stressed that regional
integration promotes
economies of scale that
reduces transactions cost,
high cost of governance,
promotes knowledge and
experience-sharing among
member states.
Oyeleye said that it also
creates opportunities for
pursuing
joint
infrastructure, improved
ease-of-doing business and
deepens market for goods
and services.
He then charged the
incoming governors to
continue from wherever the
outgoing governors stopped
on regional development.
In a his contribution, the
Publicity Secretary,
Afenifere Renewal Group,
Mr. Kunle Famoriyo,
decried the spate of poverty
and unemployment in the
country, saying such were
problematic to peaceful
coexistence in the society.
The elders, which
comprises of Former
Deputy National Chairman
(South) of the PPD, Chief
Bode George; former
deputy governor in Lagos
State, Senator Kofoworola
Tunji Shelle; Ebenezer
Babatope; Chief
Okanlawon Soboyede; Dr.
Adegbola Dominic; Engr
Tony Ojesina; Dare Adeleje
among others.
Speaking on behalf of the
caucus, Prince Uthman
Shodipe-Dosunmu,
explained that the apparent
distortions in Yobe, Borno,
Rivers, Lagos, Adamawa,
Kano and several other
states diminished the
purity of a fledgling
democratic state.
