How Enoghie of Ukhiri was kidnapped—Family member
By Alemma Aliu
BENIN—MORE insight as to
the way and manner the
Enogie of Ukhiri, Godwin Aigbe,
in Ikpoba-Okha Local
Government Area of Edo State was
kidnapped was given by a close
family friend on condition of
anonymity, yesterday.
The family source said contrary
to earlier reports that the
kidnappers went with their victim
in his Nissan car, they actually took
him in their old Mercedes Benz
car to the coastal area of the
community and took him away in
a boat, while they set their vehicle
on fire.
The source said the enogie had
AN 18-year-old girl, Hadiyat
Sikiru, has been allegedly
killed by a stray bullet during a
crossfire between suspected
cultists/kidnappers and Police
officers in Adamo community,
Ikorodu area of Lagos.
It was learned that trouble
started after a team of policemen
on surveillance raided the
community, following a tip-off that
suspected cultists that specialised
in kidnapping and killing people
for ritual, were hibernating in the
area.
On sighting the Police, the
suspects allegedly opened fire and
equally used some of their
hostages as human shields,
forcing the Police to retaliate. In
the process Hadiyat Sikiru was
allegedly hit by a stray bullet.
The death of Hadiyat Sikiru, a
Senior Secondary School, SSS, 1
student sparked off protest, as
youths in the area forced the Police
to abandon their operational
vehicle and took to their heels.
They succeeded in seizing a
Police patrol vehicle and setting it
ablaze.
According to an eyewitness, Joel
Yusuf, “policemen from the Imota
Police Division stormed the Adamo
area yesterday (Monday) evening
and raided suspected criminal
hideouts.”
Yusuf claimed that as soon as
some suspected hoodlums sighted
the policemen, they opened fire
and the police responded, noting
that “unfortunately, a secondary
school student was hit by a stray
bullet. The death of the girl
sparked off protest from an angry
mob that went after the policemen.
“The policemen fired
sporadically to scare the mob and
escaped, abandoning their patrol
vehicle. The mob then set the
vehicle ablaze.”
Yusuf said the policemen should
have known that the cultists were
using innocent people as shield.
His words: “I watched how the
earlier requested for more security
in the area owing to ongoing crisis
in his community and that when
he saw the kidnappers, he was
extending a handshake when they
told him they came to take him
away.
The source said: “On Saturday,
he was sitting outside and was
preparing to go out. He was still
on his shorts and singlet when they
came. They were four altogether,
it was three of them that came close
to where he was.
“One was at the junction and the
others were walking towards the
palace from a distance, while he
was sitting outside. On sighting
them, he stretched his hand for
handshake and they dragged him
girl, who was on her own, slumped
and died after being hit by a
bullet.”
Confirming the incident, DSP
Bala Elkana, Police Public
Relations Officer, Lagos State,
said the incident happened on
Monday evening.
According to him, “following a
tip-off, a team of policemen on
surveillance at Adama
community, Ikorodu, raided a
den of cultists who specialise in
ritual murder and kidnapping.
“On sighting the Police, they
opened fire and equally used some
of their hostages as human shields.
During the operation that lasted for
about one hour, two Police officers
and told him they came for him.
“They took him inside the old
Mercedes Benz car they came
in and followed the other road
to the other side of Ukhiri and
drove towards the bank of the
river. When they got there,
they burnt their own vehicle
and took him away in a boat.
“The way and manner they
carried out the action, one will
suspect they came from
outside the community. They
did not take him away in his
car as people have been
saying.”
‘There's genocide
in Southern Kaduna’
By Gbemiga Olamikan
ABUJA—HUNDREDS of
members of Southern
Kaduna Peoples Union besieged
Abuja yesterday, protesting
“continued killings at Kajuru,
Adara and other parts of
Southern Kaduna.”
Addressing newsmen,
President of the Union, Mr.
Solomon Musa, said: “We are out
to protest and tell Nigerians and
the world that our people are
being killed.
“Our people are being
decimated, our villages are being
destroyed daily. Every day, you
have one village being attacked.
Unfortunately, sadly, the security
agencies abdicated their
responsibilities.
“We are not being defended,
we are not protected. Sadly, from
one village to the other, our
villages are falling under the
guns and knives of terrorists.
“Genocide is being committed
in Southern Kaduna and nobody
is saying a word about it.
“We felt if we do not cry out to
the world, if the world does not
were injured and three
suspects were arrested.
“The arrested suspects are
Ahmed Hassan, Daniel Enyin
and Olaniran Alium. One
Hadiyat Sikiru was hit by a stray
bullet.
“Attempt by other members of
the deadly gang to attack our
Police Station at Imota was
repelled by gallant officers on
duty.”
However, the Commissioner
of Police, Lagos State, Zubairu
Muazu, has directed the
Deputy Commissioner of
Police in Charge of Criminal
Investigation Department,
Panti, to take over the case.
know, we would be wiped out
completely and that is why we
are here.
“We do not take up arms
because we do not have
powers to do so. The only way
we can ventilate our
grievances is what we are
doing by crying out to the
world.”
Asked what his group will
do if government fails to act,
he said: “We, the Southern
Kaduna people, will interpret
it to mean government does
not want us as Southern
Kaduna people to remain in
Nigeria.
“And if that is the case, let
government make a
pronouncement that they do
not want us to remain in
Nigeria; we can stand on our
own.
“We know it is very difficult.
But rather than being
annihilated in a country that
does not need us, we are
prepared to stand on our own.
So we are calling on the
international community to
rise and help us.”
