Defib Fundraiser
A huge fundraiser will take place at Thatto Heath
Park in April.
The fun day will raise essential funds for a
community defibrillator. With a funfair, a variety
of stalls, face painting and refreshments, the day

A photography competition for school-aged
children opens across Rainhill to commemorate the
190th anniversary of the Rainhill Trials.

Magical pantomime The Wizard of Oz heads to the
Theatre Royal this Easter.

an eclectic band of hilarious characters, dazzling
costumes and great songs, you definitely won’t

St. Helens Singers
A St. Helens choir is looking for new members for
its 2019 season.
The Singers are an enthusiastic gang of all ages
who love to sing. Featuring beautiful four-part
harmonies and singing everything from the classics
(with heavy Gilbert & Sullivan influences) to West
End show tunes.
Rehearsals take place every Monday from 7:45pm
at St. Helens Baptist Church on Hall Street. For more

Outdoor Cinema
Watch The Greatest Showman as you’ve never seen
it before – under the stars.
The Clock Face Pub & Restaurant brings the first
ever outdoor cinema to the area on Friday, May 10
at 7pm, with the hit musical taking to the big screen
once more. Bring your blankets and chairs along to
witness the spectacle of the circus under a beautiful
sky.

Prescot Fest
The line-up for this year’s Prescot Festival has been
announced.
The 10-day festival of arts is returning for its fifteenth
year in June 2019, and aims to get the public involved
with the arts on a more intimate, affordable level.
With performances from acts like swing band Dr Jazz
& the Cheshire Cats, the Maghull Wind Orchestra and
Liverpool historian Ken Pye, along with newbies like
Opera Viva, the festival is packed full of arty events to
sink your teeth into.
Along with performances across the ten days, a rare
screening of 1950 comedy The Magnet takes place at
the festival, starring a young James Fox and shot on
location in Liverpool.
Also on the bill is a performance from the Cheshire
Constabulary Band with a delicious hotpot supper,
with local schools getting involved for the Young
Instrumentalist event and Primary School Choir
Festival.
On Saturday, June 22, budding vocalists are invited to
participate in the Come and Sing event, culminating
in a performance of Vivaldi’s Gloria and Robert
Howard’s Alleluia with the Prescot Festival Chorus.
Prepare for the concert with rehearsals on
Wednesday, June 19 from 7pm-9pm and on
Saturday, June 22 from 3pm-5pm at Prescot Parish
Church, before the performance begins at 7pm.
The session costs £5 including score hire, and singers
should bring with them a packed lunch and smart

A town centre site has
been selected as a
preferred site by Glass
Futures – and could
potentially see the
construction of a £70
million facility.
If chosen, the brownfield
site, located on the
disused United Glass
headquarters next to the
Totally Wicked Stadium,
would bring top research
jobs to the borough. It
is also hoped that other
industry leaders would follow and invest in St.
Helens.
Speaking at The World of Glass in February, Metro
Mayor of the Liverpool City Region Steve Rotheram
commented: ‘Glass Futures is an internationally
significant industrial innovation project. It aims
to increase the productivity of the glass industry
and reduce its carbon impact. To bring such an
important project to St. Helens would be fantastic
news.’
Around 50 jobs would be directly created as a result
of the investment in the site, with hundreds made
by proxy.

Happy Snappers
The Happy Snappers Photography Club is looking
for new members.
Meetings cover a range of topics from landscapes,
macro photography, portraits, flash and wildlife
snaps, as well as regular seminars and field
trips. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a

willing to share your skills and learn from others,
you’re incredibly welcome.

Smarties Support
A group for children with special needs and their
carers runs fortnightly in St. Helens.
Smarties is an SEN play and support group where
children aged 0-16 can come and play in a safe,
non-judgemental environment, and where their
carers can enjoy refreshments and a chat.
Entry to the sessions cost £1.50, and they run every
other weekend from 10am-12pm at St. Helens Sea
Cadets on Mill Street. April’s first session takes place
on Sunday, April 14.

Forget-Me-Not
A new group has launched in Rainhill for people
with dementia and their carers.
The Forget-Me-Not Club aims to support those
with dementia and their friends, relatives or carers.
It wants to help develop ideas and activities to keep
people engaged while socialising with people in a
similar position.
The group meets on the first and third Tuesdays of
the month from 10am-12pm at St. Ann’s Centre on
View Road.
Reeve Court Singers
The Reeve Court Singers are a St. Helens choir who
always welcome new members.
You don’t need to be able to read music and there
are no auditions – if you love singing and want to
make new friends doing it, the Singers could be
the group for you. Anyone is welcome to join – you
don’t need to live at Reeve Court.

Northern Heritage
St. Helens-based UC Crew are looking for people to
help unearth the history of 1970s Northern Soul and
1980s Break Dance.
Volunteers want to know what went on, where
people went and how it all started, so they’re
looking out for stories, photographs, newspaper
articles and memorabilia pertaining to the above
eras. These artefacts will be exhibited in November
for a special library show.

A curated series of events takes place in Ashtonin-Makerfield’s

Momo’s Fundraiser
Fundraising continues to save a St. Helens
community cafe.
Momo’s, run by Claire Rigby, closed in December last
year, when continuous flooding made the premises
on Cotham Street too expensive to repair. Since
then, Claire has launched a campaign to save the
community favourite, which - along with serving
food and drinks - offers bereavement drop-ins and
Autism-friendly hours.

Egg-cellent Easter
Easter egg hunts are great fun, but it can
be hard to come up with original ideas.
Depending on the ages of the children the
hunt can be easy or fiendishly difficult.
Bunny Bounce Challenge - Set up different
activity posts around the garden or park. At
each one, the kids need to complete a physical
challenge in order to receive an egg. The
challenges could include star jumps, hopping,
hula-hooping, or doing a silly dance.
Easter Rhyme Challenge - If you're good at
rhymes, create a set of rhyming clues that take
the children from one hiding place to another
until they find the eggs.
Pirate Bunny Treasure Hunt - Create a
treasure map which the children have to
follow to discover where the chocolate eggs are
hidden. Perhaps a paw print or an Easter Egg could
mark the spot instead of an X
Easter Craft Challenge - Set up different craft
activities around the house or garden. For each cute
Easter craft your child completes, they win a little
chocolate egg.
Easter Bonnet Competition - Challenge the kids to
create their own Easter bonnets from craft materials
and old hats (Charity shops are great for cheap
hats). You can give chocolate egg prizes for the
most creative, the prettiest, the funniest etc
The Scrambled Egg Hunt - This is a great Easter
egg hunt idea for older kids. At each station leave
cards with single letters written on them, or a set
of plastic toy letters. The challenge is to rearrange
the letters to spell the word of the next place to find
a clue, for example 'bath' or 'shed' or ‘stairs’. At the
final station they get to collect their eggs.
Colour-Coded Easter Egg Hunt - Use a pack of eggs
in different colours. Give each child a colour. They
can only collect eggs which match that colour.
Bunny Vouchers Easter Egg Hunt - Some children
can't have chocolate due to a medical condition, so
instead of chocolate treats, pop little slips of paper
inside plastic eggs. Each slip should have a little
treat written on it for your child to claim over the
next week or so; things like ' go trampolining with
my dad', or 'fly a kite with mummy.
Egg Decoder Hunt - Take apart colourful hollow
plastic eggs and put them back together with
mismatched colours. The children must work in
teams to find the eggs hidden around the garden,
take them apart and put them back together with
the matching colour. The team with the most
colour-matched eggs wins the big prize.

Football Film
A new film about Nazi paratrooper and prisoner of
war Bert Trautmann premieres in April.
Trautmann was imprisoned in a POW camp in
Ashton-in-Makerfield until 1948, where he regularly
played in football matches until an injury led to him
taking the place of goalkeeper. When the camp
closed, Trautmann elected to remain in England and
later played for St. Helens Town before beginning
his career at Manchester City.
In 2009, Trautmann commented: ‘I will always have
such fond memories of St. Helens in my heart. [It]
gave me a new life.’
‘The Keeper’, starring David Kross as Trautmann,
heads to cinemas on Friday, April 5.
Once upon a Prom
Teardrops Supporting the Homeless have
announced their new initiative – Once Upon A
Prom.
The project aims to help young people shine on
their special prom night by providing clothes
and accessories for families who might otherwise
struggle to afford them. Teardrops is asking for
donations of prom dresses, suits, trousers and shirts,
shoes and accessories to be distributed to those in
need so they can have a truly magical evening.
Donations can be dropped off at the Teardrops
Hub on Crab Street (WA10 2DJ) or at Newton
Community Centre on Park Road South (WA12 8EX).
Marvellous Mums
A special event to celebrate Mother’s Day takes
place in Rainhill.
On Sunday, March 31, enjoy an afternoon of
entertainment from a professional vocalist, with a
delicious buffet - plus a raffle, glass of fizz on arrival
and a gift for mum!
Tickets cost £10 per person, and the event takes
place from 2pm-7pm at Rainhill Ex-Services Club. To

Stadium Sleep
The Saints Community Sleep Out in March was a
roaring success.
Currently, there are at least 320,000 homeless
people living in Britain. Whether you’re kipping on
someone else’s couch in lieu of a bed of your own
or spending your nights on the streets, not having a
fixed address can be a frightening time for anyone.
In addition to dealing with our country’s
unpredictable weather patterns, struggling to
afford food and tackling job applications with
no permanent address, UK-based charity Crisis
reports that more than 1 in 3 homeless people have
experienced some sort of violence whilst homeless.
Almost half of those living on the streets have at
least been threatened with violence while sleeping
rough, and almost 6 in 10 had been verbally abused.
The Saints Community Sleep Out wanted to
challenge the views we have of homelessness,
while raising money and awareness for several local
charities in the process. On Friday, March 15, 64
St. Helens residents headed for the Totally Wicked
Stadium for a night under the stars – and in the
midst of Storm Gareth.
Armed with survival packs containing foil blankets,
a snack and a drink, sleepers headed out into
the ground and hastily constructed their own
Nick Dyer from Teardrops at the Sleep Out
cardboard shelters to experience what life is like for
some 320,000 people nationwide every night.
Representatives from Saints’ chosen charities – St.
Helens YMCA, the Saints Community Development
Foundation and Teardrops Supporting the
Homeless – were in attendance, including Teardrops
leader Nick Dyer.
‘Once the lights were switched off and the
temperature started to drop, everyone got into
their sleeping bags and makeshift shelters to settle
down for the night,’ Nick said. ‘I think everyone
struggled to sleep not only because of the incessant
snoring around them but more from the cold,
uncomfortable places they’d squirreled themselves
into.’
Nick continued: ‘This was an excellent opportunity
to raise awareness of a tiny part of what a homeless
person on the streets faces.’
The funds raised during the evening will be split
between the three charities involved, and help
to keep the Teardrops hub stocked with food and
support for the local homeless community.

Slow Cooked Creole Chicken
An ideal recipe for a slow cooker - prepare in the morning for a delicious meal, ready for when you get home. If you
don’t have a slow cooker you can place all the ingredients into a casserole dish and place in the oven on the lowest
heat for 2-4 hours or until cooked.
Ingredients
4 skinless, boneless chicken breast fillets
Salt and pepper to taste
Cajun seasoning to taste
1 (400g) tin chopped tomatoes
1 stalk celery, diced
1 green pepper, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
Method
Serves 4-6
Place chicken breasts in the dish of a slow cooker.
Season with salt, pepper and Cajun seasoning to taste.
Stir in tomatoes, celery, green pepper, garlic, onion,
mushrooms, green chilli and sliced artichokes.
Cook on the Low setting for 10 to 12 hours, or on High
for 5 to 6 hours

Building the best
It’s often said that more than half of new businesses
fail during the first year. So when you hear of a local
business that’s lasted for over 60 years, you know

Charles Bettridge, a Kent teenager, was lucky
enough to meet holidaying St Helens girl Mavis

The company’s support of the apprenticeship
scheme is remarkable, with many local construction
businesses started by ex-apprentices of CE
Bettridge, but the one apprentice who didn’t move
on is Ian Graham, who joined CE Bettridge at 15
years old and still works for the company 46 years
later.
One of the firm’s apprentices was Charles’ son
Jon, who joined the company as an apprentice at
the age of 16 before moving on to gain expertise

Relaxing Reiki
Reiki is a form of complementary therapy
commonly referred to as energy healing. It has been
around for thousands of years but it’s current form
was first developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist
called Mikao Usui. It is said to involve the transfer
of universal energy from the practitioner’s palms to
their patient.
Some controversy surrounds Reiki, because it is
difficult to prove its effectiveness through scientific
means - but many people do believe it works.
The word ‘Reiki’ means ‘mysterious atmosphere,
miraculous sign.’ It comes from the Japanese words
‘rei’ (universal) and ‘ki’ (life energy).
The idea of Reiki is that it channels energy from
the practitioner to target the energy channels of
the patient. According to practitioners, energy can
stagnate in the body where there has been physical
injury or emotional pain. If not released these these
energy blocks can cause illness. By improving the
flow of energy around the body, practitioners say
they can enable relaxation, reduce pain, and speed
healing.
Reiki is held in a peaceful setting. The patient
will remain fully clothed, and sit in a
comfortable chair, or lie on a table. The
practitioner places their hands lightly
on or over specific areas of the head,
limbs, and torso using different hand
shapes, for between 2 and 5 minutes.
The hands can be placed over 20
different areas of the body. If there is
an active injury, the hands may be held
just above the wound.

practitioner feels that the heat, or energy, in their
hands has abated, they will remove them and focus
on a different area of the body.
Sessions can last 15-90 minutes. The number of
sessions will vary, depending on what a client

Reiki is said to induce deep relaxation, help people
cope with difficulties, relieve emotional stress, and
improve overall wellbeing. People who love Reiki
describe it as ‘intensely relaxing.’
Research from Cancer Research U.K. says that one
reason for patients feeling better after a session
could be that the therapist spends time with them
and touches them. This is soothing for patients who
may be overwhelmed by invasive therapy, fear, and
stress.
Individuals report different experiences. Some
say that the practitioner’s hands become hot,
others report cooling hands and some people feel
pulsating waves. The most common reports are of
a release of tension.
The transfer of energy takes place while
the hands are held over the patient.
During this time, the practitioner’s
hands may be warm and tingling. Each

The Rocket Returns

Arrive into Rainhill by train and you won’t be
able to miss the glaring homages to the village’s
locomotive heritage, and for good reason. The
Rainhill Trials, which saw the launch and testing of
Stephenson’s Rocket, had enormous implications for
communications worldwide. Its impact on society
as a whole was of a magnitude that is difficult to
comprehend today; as Barrie Rushton of the Rainhill
Railway and Heritage Society said, ‘before the Rocket,
the fastest means of transport was a horse!’

2019 marks the 190th anniversary of the Rainhill
Trials, which took place in October 1929.
The Rainhill Trials had one goal – to find the best
method of hauling trains between Manchester
and Liverpool. The directors of the Liverpool &
Manchester Railway were split between those who
thought winding engines would be required for
the inclines at Whiston and St. Helens, and those
who thought locomotives would do the job. The
competitions rules stipulated that the winning
locomotive must be capable of travelling at least
10 miles per hour while pulling a 20-tonne train.
Engines had to ‘consume their own smoke’ and limit
steam pressure in the boiler to ensure they could
effectively go the distance. The engines would
have to demonstrate their ability to make the 35
mile journey between the two cities along the only
partially completed Liverpool and Manchester
railway – at Rainhill, a small hamlet on the Turnpike
Road.
In fact, the decision to use Rainhill as the location
for the Trials was largely coincidental. The Liverpool
& Manchester Railway began construction in 1826,
and was originally going to travel through St. Helens
and across estates belonging to the Earls of Derby
and Sefton, but objections were raised to these
plans and the railway was instead built through
Rainhill – where the only level stretch of track was
located. The original station was at Kendrick’s Cross,
east of the present building, and the line’s diagonal
placement necessitated the construction of the
oddly-proportioned Skew Bridge which still stands
today.
Designed by Robert Stephenson in Newcastle
upon Tyne, the Rocket was one of five locomotives
to compete in the Trials, along with Brandreth’s
Cycloped, Ericsson & Braithwaite’s Novelty,
Bustall’s Perseverance and Hackworth’s Sans Pareil
(Unmatched). Not all of the locomotives in the
Trials were steam powered. Cycloped was actually
horse-drawn, a concept which fell flat when one of
the horses collapsed through the wooden boards
beneath it and had to be withdrawn from the race.
Regardless, the horse had no way of keeping up with
the steam engines, and was outdone by the other
competitors.
Rocket combined many elements that other
locomotives had started to introduce in one
innovative package, using a blast-pipe exhaust
which allowed the engine to self-regulate and a
more effective boiler to power the engine on. Its
name derives from a weapon used by the British
military in the 1800s, not the spacefaring rocket of
nineteenth century science-fiction as you might
expect. Congreve artillery rockets were British in

design, capable of travelling over 2,700 metres at
great speeds, and were used during the Napoleonic
Wars.
Still, the Rocket was certainly boundary defying,
reaching a metaphorical stratosphere if not a literal
one. True to its namesake, Rocket steamed away
with a £500 win at the Rainhill Trials, reaching a top
speed of 30 miles per hour and averaging 12 mph
as it traversed the railway. The line itself eventually
opened in September 1830 – the first full-scale
inner-city railway to be exclusively powered by
locomotives and offer both freight and passenger
services.
Like many engineering feats of the era, Rocket’s
success didn’t come without tragedy. When the
railway officially opened, the locomotive was
travelling to the since demolished Parkside Station
near Newton-le-Willows to pick up the gathered
dignitaries who were attending the opening. As
William Huskisson MP descended from his own
private train carriage, he was unable to reach the
platform before Rocket collided with his leg – an
injury which proved fatal.
Despite the accident, Rocket’s success was
undeniable. Rainhill has always accepted and indeed
embraced these inextricable links to the railway.
Rocket features on village signposts leading into
Rainhill; the 150 Trials Celebration Committee came
together in 1977, going on to launch the Railway and
Heritage Society out of the library and the carriage
museum behind it; and the Model Railway Club
continues to host regular exhibitions of their own
miniature trains. Rainhill’s passion for locomotion is
obvious – and this year will bring that passion to the
forefront once again.
Rainhill is gearing up for the latest weekend-long
celebration of the Trials. Parish Council Clerk Gillian
Pinder already feels keen that the events celebrate
Rainhill’s industrial heritage, bringing local schools
and organisations together to commemorate the
190th anniversary.
‘The project will nurture the curiosity of younger
generations, inspiring them to research further the
development of rail transport on the first ever public

railway for the transportation of passengers and
freight between remote cities,’ she tells me. ‘It will
bring back to life the excitement and anticipation
of the previously untested and revolutionary
engineering ideas.’
Preparations for Rocket’s anniversary celebrations
are well underway – including the return of a replica
Rocket to the area for the weekend. While the real
engine is on display at the Science and Industry
Museum in Manchester until September, a to-scale
replica on loan from the National Railway Museum
in York will bring Stephenson’s engineering back
to life in the village. The colourful Rainhill Rocket
will head a costumed parade through Rainhill from
1pm-2pm on the Sunday, complete with a marching
band, floats and other vintage locomotives. A new
heritage plaque is also set to be unveiled at Rainhill
Station. Rainhill Gala will provide a fitting finale to
the weekend on Monday 27th.
The weekend is filled with opportunities to learn
more about Rainhill’s heritage. Exhibitions of railway
memorabilia, vintage locomotives and related
photography displays will take place around the
village and at St. Ann’s Centre on View Road, while
costumed actors will perform vignettes of events
significant to the
development of
Rainhill, as well as
offering guided
tours around the
village.

the group stay the night in the waiting room – until
ghostly apparitions begin to materialise. The Ghost
Train departs at 7:30pm at Rainhill Village Hall each
night, and tickets for the performance are available
from the Post Office and the Village Hall, or on 01744

Gillian hopes these immersive glimpses into
Rainhill’s railway heritage will evoke ‘a sense of the
danger, excitement and mystery surrounding the
first people to travel in a “horseless carriage”’. Indeed,
the Trials would have been seen as a sort of sciencefiction;
190 years ago spectators covered 1.5 miles
of track to get a glimpse of the steam engine to a
‘racecourse atmosphere’, with a band playing and
plenty of opportunities to bet on the winner.
Heritage events aren’t the only things to get your
teeth stuck into. Rainhill boasts a full calendar of
family fun across the sunny month of May: and you
don’t want to miss out.

The Perfect Pear
They may look a little underwhelming with their
crinkly green skin, but avocado-lovers know
that the fresh creamy flesh is simply delicious
and a perfect complement to eggs, smoked
bacon, griddled chicken...I could go on.
The avocado pear turns out not to be a pear
at all, but a berry. It also turns out to be pretty
much the perfect food.
They have a reputation for being ‘bad’ and
high in calories. It’s true that a medium-sized
avocado contains 30g of fat (as much as a
quarter-pound burger!) but an avocado’s fat is
mostly monounsaturated fat (that’s the good
kind).
Studies have shown that avocado eaters are less
at risk for metabolic syndrome, which also puts
them at less risk of type-2 diabetes and heart
attacks.
Avocados contain folate, an important
nutrient for pregnant women and infants, and
interestingly have also been shown to slow and
possibly reverse memory loss in Alzheimer’s
patients.
If you are weaning your baby, avocados are a
great first food because of their soft texture, and
nutritional benefits, like healthy fats for brain
development.
Avocados are high in carotenoids so offer skin
protection against aging caused by UV damage.
They also have anti-inflammatory properties,
which is good for people with rheumatoid
arthritis but also because inflammation has
been linked to Alzheimer’s, heart attacks,
strokes, diabetes, and cancer.
So, check out the avocados on the supermarket
shelf, and treat yourself to some green ‘n’ creamy
goodness.

Ford Fiesta ST

Ford’s new Fiesta ST is a fearless hot hatch with a
200ps slab of power under the bonnet. It also wears
a self-assured body kit and has a flashy interior with
a sporty, flat-bottomed steering wheel.
The ST’s seats are very supportive, the view allaround
is first-rate, and the eight-inch touchscreen
is stress-free to use.
The Fiesta ST-3 three-door variant, in the spotlight
here, has enough room in the back for two adults –
meaning there is a lot of space for younger children.
The load area is also bigger compared with the
retreating Fiesta model. At 292-litres it will just
about swallow a week’s worth of shopping.
The £22,895 Fiesta ST-3 gets handsome 18-inch
alloy wheels, which are enhanced further with
bright red brake callipers. The hatchback also
comes loaded up with equipment including,
heated leather Recaro seats and a heated steering
wheel. There is also a lot of technology shoehorned
into the Fiesta ST, which makes the car a pleasure to
live with. Tech includes rear parking sensors, keyless
entry and automatic air conditioning.
As you would anticipate, the regular Fiesta’s body
has been jazzed up for the ST, and it is now 14 per
cent stiffer due to some additional bracing on the
Ford’s underside. At the rear, there is a new stiff

twist-beam torsion bar, and there is a completely
new steering rack at the front. These are the most
radical parts of their type ever installed into an onroad
performance Ford. The steering is also 14 per
cent quicker than the withdrawing Fiesta ST200.
What’s more, Ford Performance has added Ride
Control 1 valving. What is that, you ask? Well,
basically, the damping hardens when you are
hammering into corners and relaxes off when you
are taking it easy cruising along. Torque vectoring
springs have also been built-in to give a snappier
turn-in; it is all ingenious stuff for a sub-£23,000 hothatch.
But that is not all when it comes to the Fiesta ST’s
technology and engineering. For the first time, a
limited slip differential has been incorporated into
the Ford, too; it’s part of the £850 Performance
Package which also comprises ‘Performance Shift
Lights’ and launch control.
The Blue Oval’s fierce little beast fires from 0-62mph
in a mere 6.5 seconds. Furthermore, selectable
motoring modes permit you to elect relaxed or
sportier settings for the steering, exhaust and,
of course, the accelerator. The modes - Normal,
Sport and Track – each build up weight, noise and
response the higher up the selection you go. In

Track setting the traction control is turned off and

steering and shuddering suspension might put you
off using it as your daily ride.
